Rodgers Confirms: €60m 'maverick' will be a Liverpool player 'when the season begins'

Mario Balotelli continues to be linked with a transfer away this summer, but according to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, the much-maligned striker will still be at Anfield when the new season starts in just under 3 weeks.

When asked during a press conference today if Balotelli will be at Liverpool next season, Rodgers told reporters:

“That will be entirely up to Mario. He is training well with a number of other players at Melwood, and working hard to get fit. We will see when the season begins.”

Balotelli is currently linked with several clubs in Serie A, including Fiorentina, and Sampdoria, Inter Milan, with the latter club reportedly rejecting the chance to sign the Italian.

The speculation seems moot, though, as Balotelli's agent, Mino Raiola has already claimed that the striker 'will stay' at Liverpool next season. Speaking to Sky Sports recently, Raiola, confirmed:

"We have had talks with Liverpool and he will stay. I spoke many times with the club and they were happy with his input as a professional"

Then again, it's hard to take seriously anything Raiola says; he is, after all, the guy who recently claimed that Balotelli is worth '€60m-€70m' (!)

Rather surprisingly, Balotelli still retains support amongst the Liverpool fanbase.

I recently conducted a site-poll asking fans is LFC should keep Balotelli next season. 42% of voters wanted him out, but a majority of 58% seemed fine with having Balotelli as one of Liverpool's forward options next season.

To be fair, the Italian is the least of Liverpool's problems right now. The media are ridiculously obsessed with his every move, but Balotelli has (for the most part) behaved well at Anfield, and there's always a possibility that he'll come good.

That said, with Benteke, Ings, and Origi now in the squad, it's hard to see how Balotelli is going to get regular opportunities to play, and unless he suddenly becomes a '€60m-€70m' player (or achieves Messi-like levels of prolificity), he'll probably struggle to make the bench for most games next season.

With his constant misuse of the player, Brendan Rodgers is heavily complicit in Balotelli's failure at Anfield. In the season prior to joining Liverpool, Balotelli grabbed 25 goals/assists in 39 games for Milan, but at LFC, he's suffered a massive 80% reduction in creative output.

If every other manager under whom Balotelli has played can get him scoring/creating goals, why can't Rodgers do the same?

Ultimately, though, it's probably also true to say that if Balotelli leaves, he will not be missed, and if that's the case, why keep him? Just cash-in, and use the money to fund a player who'll fit into the team and make a regular impact.

I can't shake the niggling feeling, though, that Balotelli will flourish under a different Liverpool manager.

Who knows - if the Italian holds out long enough, he might just get that chance.

  1. Had Klopp come in I would have expected Balotelli to flourish, with Rodgers I don't really see it happening. That being said, I would feel a little unhappy seeing him leave right now, Balotelli IS a good player and it would be a shame, if he didn't get to show that a few times before his time with us is over

  2. Say what you want about his attitude but Balotelli has bags of ability! He was very unlucky last season and was played as a lone striker which left him isolated up front and forced him to drop deep. This isn't entirely Rodgers' fault because Borini and Lambert weren't working and Sterling had be our makeshift striker.
Balotelli will be able to thrive off of the pace of Origi, and Ings with the latter making up for Balo's lack of pressing. Benteke has a similar skill set to Balotelli and this could be a problem for Mario because very rarely do two players of the same style flourish when played together (Which is a viable option considering Sturridge's injuries and Origi & Ings' status as squad players.

  3. To be honest Balotelli suits Klopp's style of football even less than Rodgers'. It would have been interesting to see if he could have gotten a tune out of him.

    ReplyDelete
  4. His playing style isn't neccesarily tailored towards a striker like Balotelli, but Klopp has basically gotten the best out of every one of his players up until this very season

  5. Klopp is a great manager but if Mourinho gave up on Balotelli the. I wonder how even Jurgen would've fared.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Like him or not Balotelli as a backup is most teams no1 striker. Just when it looked like he was getting it together he was dropped without explanation. I do think thst he will come good though. Brendan is very good at getting the best out of these players and I do think he will get through to Mario. It cannot be denied he has incredible ability, he looks scared of failure, which ultimatley leads towards...failure.

  7. Cashing in on him is the only sensible course of action now but someone has to want him and be able to afford him and he has to be prepared to move there.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Not sure about Balo but I bet all those reporters were pleased Brendan was in a better mood.
You never can tell how these things will pan out nowadays, seems he's just as likely to take offence and bludgeon you to death with your own microphone.
Must be all the PR guidance Jamie's been giving him.

  9. I'm just a tad concerned he may disrupt the others a bit. I know he hasn't really put too much of a foot wrong with us so far but their did seem to be a few occasions of on-pitch unrest between himself and a few others.

It may be a bit unfair to automatically blame him but being honest I do have a nagging feeling he may at least be partly responsible.

Also with the other strikers we now appear to have plenty of cover and I do agree with Jamie, him and Benteke being similar may not bring the best out in both, or my fear, either of them.

Do feel bad he hasn't been given a fair chance though and think the blame lays with those who bought him to the Club in the first place, but really the team comes first and just not sure him staying put, is best for that.

  10. Cant see him staying if we announce a new striker. The article suggests he's staying, but Rogers doesn't say anything along those lines.. Balo is at melwood and the whole scenario seems ominous.

  11. To cash in we need interested clubs. Sampdoria and Fiorntina are clubs like West Ham that operate on shoestring budgets and complicated constructions. You cant cash in with them. So our best bet is to keep him until he comes good or Some club with money gets a bit desperate. Or maybe some club u. The middle east comes along.

  12. Rodgers hasnt been able to get the best out of 95% of the players hes signed I dont know where this myth comes from...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sell HIM to Villa 😄

    ReplyDelete
  14. So youd rather keep Borini than Balo?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Disagree Jamie = the guy is a Mirage - he will never flourish at Anfield - when the Season starts he might well be a LFC player but he will be sent out on loan - they clearly want shot of him

    ReplyDelete
  16. I can think of 18 more clubs he could go to, any one of them would be great!

  17. B R has done well pre season and Klopp is not a genius - good yes genius no

    ReplyDelete
  18. Totally agree, if Klopp had come in, Balotelli would find himself in the same position he's already in, if not straight out the door

  19. ...so according to so many people and their one view that BR is the main reason why everyone fails at LFc...it follows that Jose Mourinho is also a very sh*t manager...cos Loic Remy did f*ck all last year so that means, according to all the know-it-alls he has been 'mismanaged' right...?

...and then it follows that we should be looking at any manager who has the simplicity to run a team according to their main striker, so even if that striker is average then the manager is just a genius for 'making' him score....notwithstanding that any striker worth his salt will score goals...look around..its why certain ilk of strikers are worth the money....

..so can someone tell me why, if he scored/created 25 goals from 39 games in an italian league baloteli was sold for the equivelant of a packet of crisps...it doesn't happen...with thos estats just go out and try and buy someone/striker, I can guarantee it will cost you way, way more....

...Evreyone just loves talking balotelli up, as if he is jesus or something and BR is judas escariot; letting down the chosen one again and again...no on here knows the ins and outs and no one here is a premiership manager, or even a lower league one...if its that simple then why not go and try it out for real.....?

...balotelli is a management nightmare; it beggars belief that out of all the people posting on here we don't have any managers;whatever level of man-managemnet that may be, cos when I look at him I wouldn't want him in my staff or on my team, he wouldn't be anywhere near the criteria i would choose; he would just disrupt the balance......

...when we all agree that sterling had to go as he wasn't a team player what makes anyone think baloitelli is? Coutinho, milner, henderson, suarez, lallana...i could go on...these guys epitomise team play and some aof them are world beaters...not wasters like baloteli...why is there even a question about pandering to him...if he cant adapt...p*ss off.......

    ReplyDelete
  20. Balo stayed behind because his adoptive father passed away. He very well might be sold, but I wouldn't say training at home while the team is at preseason would be a sign...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't hold back dinman let it out

    ReplyDelete
  22. ....wow man....you know the guys doing the drum-roll for this transfer must be knackered.....!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Fair enough, heard about that story but thought it was a while back.. But BRs comments dont seem too positive about him..

    ReplyDelete
  24. Too right mate, it sure did take a while. Another one in the bag though, happy days :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. He was given like 2-3 weeks compassionate leave or something like that, and the squad left for Asia in the middle of it. Especially for a guy like Balo who has to keep his personal life in check 24/7, it wouldn't be surprising to me that he preferred to take a bit more time off from being competitive to gain more composure. Plus, I would have to imagine he's the highest earner in the family. He's probably paying for and planning everything to make sure his father gets the right sendoff. Easier to coordinate when summer training is all he has to worry about.

Anyway, I think BR's opinion is clear. It's all up to Balo. If he works hard to get into the squad and performs well, he stays. If he doesn't, he's gone. It's all up to Balo to dictate his own future.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ....don't know why mate ....but everyone looks soooo good in LFC red.... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. All these new signings are making me want to buy that training top... I'm actually starting to like it...

  28. What will be interesting is how benteke will do on his own up front which for me how he will play with the squad Rodgers has ,I'm gonna get slated but there are a lot of similarities between balo and benteke And I'll even go as far as to say balo has more skill, trust me cf is a lonly place to be at an field when they are fannying about with the ball in midfield

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh yes indeed :)

  32. Hadn't seen that, very sad news in any circumstance but knowing a little of his upbringing, I'm sure it's a particularly difficult time for him.
I retract any p-taking comments I've made regarding Balo recently and wish him all the best.

  33. New Balance did a wonderful job on the main kits imo. The home is simple yet elegant red. The away (best imo) has the traditional white and red look. The third is suitable to be just that. A third option kit. I've always loved their shoes, and if the quality of the shirts are anything like the footwear, I think they'll be a hit with the players too.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Most of Rodgers signings have been mirages the only thing real about them is the money spent

    ReplyDelete
  35. Balo cannot be that bad a player as portrayed by the media and ex-LFC players. I have certainly not seen enough of him in the league. But I agree with Jaimie that he should be sold. I just cannot see how he can do well under BR, just whatever shapes of pegs except round for the round holes created by BR.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Steady on now ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't see the similarities except that they are well built physically strong lads

    ReplyDelete
  38. ...hey Stuart...we can't call him bentekesaurus anymore....

...but we can call him bentekesoooooaaaarus...when he climbs above everyone else and scores his first cannon-like header... :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. They are just fabulous!! And the shoes.oh my God the shoes :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think it's too late and BR said all that to deflect the question

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nope he's going too

    ReplyDelete
  42. The lonely striker thing could definitely become an issue but you have to think/hope that Brendan has something a little different in mind to counter that effect.
I think Benteke will be more industrious but it will be hugely disappointing if end up seeing him become as ineffectual as Balo was last season.

    ReplyDelete
  43. MY god Jaimie you're a nasty journalist;)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  50. Both are similarly built like you mentioned and have decent pace- but not lightning- and the strength to outmuscle defenders. Their style of play is similar too: both are good with the ball at their feet with powerful shots and good heading ability. Neither makes many runs behind the defense and can become isolated easily of teams play deep.

PS- The Balotelli comparison is from his City and Milan days not his glitchy self last year because we didn't see Balotelli with many headed opportunities or long range strikes.

    ReplyDelete
  51. ...whoa...! did I miss something...?!?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I heard that on the Daily Star as well and this is the internet so it must be true!

    ReplyDelete
  53. For me benteke makes much better runs and balo actually doesn't run at all.balo also plays deeper and as for his shooting (for us anyway) its horrendous..

    ReplyDelete
  54. For the record I like benteke he's à real goal threat but I have major concerns about Rodgers ability to utilize his talent ,we don't play with wingers and our build up play can be pedestrian add to that a goalie who has no concept of accurate distribution to attack placed players and I worry where his chances will come ,what concerns me more is an article stated benteke will have to adapt and not the other way round a facile use of personnel at yoiuyr disposal

    ReplyDelete
  55. ...vvlfc.....thank you for seeing what i see....only the reality.....balo and benteke are worlds apart and no one, not with their opinion, stats, insider knowledge, years of premier league management/scouting/advising!, or any other would lead me to any other conclusion.... :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. ...bro...he's not really gonna use him as a carpenter....i promise.....

    ReplyDelete
  57. He definitely makes a good few chances for himself, but that wouldn't necessarily work if he starts looking to drop back into midfield to pick up the ball while the midfielders themselves are looking for him to provide an outlet further up the pitch.
So if we are under the cosh a bit he needs to be very disciplined and stay put and hopefully show us he can keep the opposition defence busy without the ball.
I think that's something along the right lines anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  70. You and me both mate, I'm trying to slowly edge my way into it.
I think the difference people are concerned about is say some strikers will utilise constant movement up front, runs in behind the defence and such, that not only keep the oppo's defence busy but also give our own midfield lots of avenues of attack or even open up spaces for them to attack themselves.
Suarez of course could do anything and everything but I think the single striker role can be a difficult skill to master and in a game where we're not managing to get much going there's the fear of Benteke/Balo etc being isolated up front and then either becoming a bit stationary or growing frustrated and starting to drop deeper and deeper to get on the ball.
Maybe not so much of a problem if your AM's fly past them and carry on the attack but as with Balo last season, sometimes it all just grinds to a halt.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If benteke can do that he's a snip at 32m

    ReplyDelete
  72. ...thats primarily cos he's a f*ckin id1*t who can't be bothered...there was never any deep-rooted hunger there to evolve, get better help the team...

...theer are apparently in psychology, 'you' people and 'me' people....

...team players have a healthy dose of both inside themselves but usually start as 'you' people....

    ...guess which one balo is.......

and he wont change it...which is why at 25 goals/assissts in 39 games he was all of 15 odd mill...

    ReplyDelete
  77. My two pence on the whole Benteke and Balotelli comparison. Most people seem to think that Balotelli failed because we failed to provide crosses. What a load of hooey! Mario failed because his finishing is terrible. He had chances, clear cut chances that a good striker would have put away. I mean in the game against Tottenham, he had enough chances to score a hat trick. His movement off the ball when we're attacking is so bad, it shows that he had totally failed to develop that part of his game since he was 19. Seriously, I've seen 18 year old academy strikers with better movement into space than what Mario does. When we signed him, we thought we were getting a 24 year old striker who is just about to hit his prime. In truth, what we got was a 17 year old striker in a 24 year old man'd body with bags of skill but with no idea how well to utilize the talent he has. Don't get me wrong, I want Mario to succeed, but he needs to realize how far behind in his development he is in order for that to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I can take Balotelli or leave him to be honest as he hasn't earned his badges yet in an LFC shirt some of the reasons are down to Rodgers and some are down to Balotelli, but he needs to grow up a little and start showing that unreal ability he has in him if he stays, if he is given another season and Rodgers gives him a fair chance and utilises him better then he could become that star player everybody can see locked away inside. First and formost though he needs to start acting like a professional footballer instead of a wide eyed niave teen at some point surely. 67 goals in something like 176 games works out at around 1 goal in every 2.5 matches not exactly prolific but is far from not good enough. He is only 24 so his best years are far away yet so if he is given another chance this season then I wish him all the luck in the world but if he is given a fair shot and used well only he can answer the critics, not on social media or some youtube or twitter rubbish but on the pitch scoring goals he is capable of it but this season will be his last chance saloon just like it is Rodgers

    ReplyDelete
  79. I know what you mean mate, he always seems to have a bit of a childlike persona to me. If you look into his upbringing I think there was a fair amount of turmoil so perhaps he's never really moved on.
Something seems to be preventing him from sorting his sh&t out that's for sure.
Having said that, you'd think that at some point he'd realise and start making the most of what he presently has and it seems to me he could end up regretting not doing just that.
Who knows; Benteke for the win though :-)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Spot on with that mate

    ReplyDelete
  81. So true even Chris de Burgh wrote about his 'Lady in Red' I like to think it was about his missus coming down the stairs in nothing but a Liverpool shirt doing a sexy dance but thats just me I guess! ReplyDelete
  92. Just cash in and use the money? News flash...nobody wants him. How embarrassing is it that Sampdoria will take him on loan but only if LFC pay all his wages...and that's the best offer. The one silver lining is we have more than a month to unload him on some other suc...I mean team.

    ReplyDelete
  93. We could let him go on a free. At least his huge waged would be off the books.

    ReplyDelete
  94. No he doesn't. And if he might, he doesn't have the desire to use them.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Can chronically offside really be considered 'deep?'

    ReplyDelete
  96. And his transfer value has dropped at every sale since leaving Inter. We are merely the next in line. Send away on a free and at least get the wages off the books.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Pass...one set of glass legs is enough. We need a LB and a DM if BR actually plans on using one. If not, the LB will do and we're done. The priority now should be to weave a team with the tactics and players suited to play those tactics when needed. As opposed to last season we've got a couple of weeks now to play as a complete team.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Soccer requires running and Balo doesn't run, ergo Balo isn't going to contribute diddly.............

    ReplyDelete
  107. What about Sturridge? Saurez improved dramatically as well. Mignolet had major improvement last year as well. Skrtel, Sterling, Ibe, Henderson just to name a few.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Makes no difference, rumour is he got the snip.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Hahaha love a lady staying over and wearing my Liverpool shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Ok Jaimie it's extremely unlikely we will be signing Reus , in fact we won't be but I don't believe we're even trying to either to be fair . If We're looking for a replacement for Sterling who has Firmino replaced ??? We know Milner is in pretty much to replace Gerrard

    ReplyDelete
  111. An Indian elephant from Jamaica? Remind me never to get on a plane that you're piloting!

    ReplyDelete
  112. If you think he doesn't play to deep you need to watch him play more.the only reason he's offside is because when the other team attack us that lazy oaf is still standing in their half and if we counter attack he's offside.

    ReplyDelete
  113. What about those players? What proof is there that Rodgers improved them in any way? Sturridge was already at Chelsea and scoring when played. Mignolet had a good spell last season but I wouldnt call that improving unless he plays that well consistently. All the others were already at the club. And I gave him Coutinho even though I think he has little to do with Phil's talent.

    ReplyDelete
  114. True but Lucas has been off the pace for a few years and Allen has too bad many poor games, despite decent ones which are often overlooked. I would look Illaramendi too. I wonder with him if we're being too romantic and assuming he will do what Alonso did? Still he can pass and move.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I still prefer Balotelli over Origi as 4th striker. I dont rate that yound guy and I don't see much of a career for him at liverpool. He'll be loaned out if not mid season next season and then ultimately sold.

Balotelli has potential to score 10-15 goals a season if used right and I don't expect him to be a mega superstar of a player that ship has sailed for him.

  116. Yeah well, grapes are sour..moving on we do not have a proper winger though

  117. Ideally I'd like to see Balotelli, Borini and Lambert leave. We have Benteke, Sturridge, Ings, Origi and several promising youngsters (Yesil, Ojo, Sinclair). Whether or not Balotelli is skilled is not the question. He is not going to do it in a Liverpool shirt. Borini and Lambert have the decency and self-respect to put everything into the rare chances they get and they will leave, so I hope Balotelli does as well. It was a dreadful decision to buy him in the first place. Benteke or Bony would have been much better buys.

  118. I feel great sympathy for millionaire managers with every imaginable resource at their beck and call who are occasionally asked to actually manage an employee. Horrid stuff.

  119. Ouch (for both the pun and the procedure)

  120. Why would we want Reus or Gotze when we've just signed Benteke

  121. Just realised this is the Internet, so am adding a disclaimer: the above is sarcasm.

  122. And their ears flap.

  123. No it would take too long to leave the pitch

  124. No chance, whatsoever.

  125. Lets hope we don't suffer from elephantitis of the goal again this season

  126. If borini gets two seasons then so does ballo. I think he is techinically better than tekkers too

    ReplyDelete
  127. Agree with Balo over Origi. Loan him out to get prem experience like chelski did with Lukaku. In m12 months see if he's any improvement on what we have. If not, repeat etc.

  128. Henderson went from the whipping boy to club captain. Suarez went from a should have, would have, could have player to hands down the best player in the EPL 2 years in a row under Rodgers. Sturridge could barely get minutes to the second highest scorer in EPL. The only common factor to all those players, Brendan Rodgers. Wether they were at the club prior or not doesn't make a difference, give credit where it is do. BR has improved many players, but admiting he has done good is just far to difficult for some cause than it makes you realize he deserves more time and it would be far more difficult to constantly bash on him.

  129. you are forgeting about Emre...

  130. Suarez was the first choice striker for the number four national team in the world and top scorer in his league. Henderson was as good as he was at Sunderland but played in Gerrards shadow until last year. Sturridge was a prolific goal scorer at Bolton as well as Chelsea. He just didn't get much time to play. Hes been scoring goals for us, when fit, since he signed for us. Nothing to do with Rodgers. Anyway, apparently Rodgers is responsible for developing all kinds of players yet when they underperform in a scandalous way it's the assistant and first team coach who are to blame.

Isn't Origi originally a winger and has been played out of position at forward?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Anyone here using superbru?

    ReplyDelete
  133. ludicrous with no due respect, I like it... Please, the Seedorf question I asked?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Suarez under Kenny was a completely different player, great he scored in the dutch league but so did Jozy Altidore so nothing to special. If Sturridge was profilic at chelsea why did they let him go so easily and play him so little? Henderson has completely changed under Rodgers and is becoming more and more efficient every year under Rodgers.

I never once blamed the assistants for the underperforming, but i have seen assistants been changed in all kinds of sports and I have seen it work wonders and I have seen it fail. We have no idea what was going on at training or how things have or have not changed. We won't know until the end of the season. Its a call BR and FSG made, hopefully it works if not then BR loses his job.

Its called a win win. Either Liverpool succeeds or Liverpool find a new manager.

  135. Another dig at br, as if it's fact Mario played so poor was all down to br, what about his last season in the premier league where he scored 1 goal in 14 games for Man City, was that br fault too? Maybe it's possible the Italian league is slightly different to the premier league? Or Mario only cares to play well for Milan, the truth is there are many possibilities than to simply blame Br just because you hate him, it's Quiet childish really

    ReplyDelete
  136. How do you use Mario right? If he can't be bothered to run in the box but rather hover outside looking for long shots into the crowd maybe there's a chance it's the players fault, otherwise he should shout at the manager every time he did an awful shot as if he made him do that

  137. The biggest problem at this club is not Ballotelli, it's the rat faced two tonged Imposter. It truly amazes me why some supporters are still willing to perceive with him. How much convincing does one need to catalog this horrendous excuse of a football manager. He does not understand what his next move is, completely deluded in all he does and says. A total embarrassment to this club, he does not command any respect.

The only thing he has been successful at is taking another wife who just happens to be a ex Liverpool FC employee. In everything else he does he is nothing short of clueless, whatever is between the Imposters ears....is certainly not brains
