'Contact' Confirmed: Liverpool in stunning move to sign 'amazing' £35m superstar. Transfer possible?

Earlier this month, Liverpool were once again linked with an improbable move for Borussia Dortmund superstar Marco Reus, and although a transfer seems incredibly unlikely, the Reds are reportedly locked in talks to sign the coveted German attacker.

On July 10th, The Telegraph claimed that:

* Reus - hailed by ex-Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp as 'amazing' - is 'lined up' for a summer transfer to Anfield.

* Brendan Rodgers sees the coveted attacker as a 'replacement' for Raheem Sterling.

Liverpool have bee linked with many times in the past, and according to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri today:

"Liverpool's contact with Reus [is] true [but] Still no bid. Reus apparently more keen on Real Madrid, but Liverpool have been working intensely on [the transfer]".

It's exciting to think that Liverpool are actively trying to sign Reus, but if it comes down to a direct choice between Anfield and the Bernabeu, there's only going to be one winner.

I can't see a transfer happening this summer, though. In February, Reus renewed his contract with Dortmund, and at the time, he told Kicker magazine:

"I renewed because Borussia is the club for me. Dortmund is my town, my family lives here and I have all my friends here. There is life beyond football and that's why I decided to stay"

Reus signed a new deal whilst Dortmund languished in 16th place in the league, which shows his genuine loyalty to the club, so why will he suddenly abandon his principles, family and friends to jump ship only a few months later, especially after rejecting a move to Barcelona.

At the time, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Reus's loyalty, and compared the 25-year old to Steven Gerrard. He told the club's official website:

"That Marco has opted for BVB amid a sporting crisis shows he truly identifies with the club and that makes us very proud. He can define an era just like Steven Gerrard at Liverpool"

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is a fan of £35m-rated Reus, and when asked last season about the possibility of the German coming to Anfield, he enthused:

“I’d love LFC to sign Reus. [He's] a great player, and would be one of the best players in the Premier League.”

Many fans will agree with Carra, but signing Reus is too much of a risk. Like Sturridge, Khedira, Wilshere, Walcott et al, Reus is a perpetual sicknote, and he's constantly on the sidelines suffering from niggling injuries:

* 20 separate injuries in the last four seasons (259 days on the sidelines)

* 2013-14: SEVEN injuries during the season (Muscle problems/pulls, and torn ankle ligaments).

* 2014-15: SIX injuries in one season (Again, mainly muscle problems and ankle issues)

Reus probably won't last five minutes in the overly physical Premier League, and there's no point spending big bucks on a player who'll spend most of his time on the bench.

The idea of Reus is exciting, but the reality is rather different.

  1. Reus will come just behind the curtains is said that Klopp will come too. This is how i see the things.

  2. If Klopp will come his first doing will be to change the goalkeeper, this is my opinion further.

  3. Your last sentence sums it up beautifully Jamie. He is a great player BUT

Agreed, he would be awesome, but ultimately another Sturridge.

  5. Great player greater injury record and even greater fee= not so great

  6. sorry Jaimie, this article just does not tick all the boxxes for me.

  7. Top player but injuries rule him out in my book. Think our money would be better spent on a deeper lying midfielder.

  8. Which box is not filled?

  9. I think that it was an "outstanding" article and Jaimie was excellent in his intense err... descriptions.

  10. If firmino maintains he's Hoffenheim scoring rate then there's absolutely no need for Reus. A DM would be a better buy.

We have enough NEW players now honestly when is this bunch gonna gel as a squad?

  11. Illaramendi would be an ideal choice but I think Rodgers has something else in mind. He might try and replicate what Chile did in the Copa America and go with three pressing midfielders to negate the need for a traditional DM. If we do need a Defensive Midfielder through the season Rodgers might try and play Lucas- if fit otherwise Rossiter could fill in- or Allen to play a dual role of DM and pressing midfielder.

  12. Crikey, how long does it take to tap a couple of knees with a toffee hammer, dragging on a bit :)

  13. i cant believe we are still being linked with big money out field players when the elephant in the room is between the sticks

  14. liverpool dont want another andy carroll fiasco ...we now do a stringent test on new signings to make sure there fit then they usually manage a couple of games then spend most of the season out injured

    ReplyDelete
  15. Maybe he's got a new agent, Aidy Ward has room after Berahino left him.

  16. Hmmm, don't think we'll be signing any more attacking players now. I think we're all set in that department and I don't see splurging £40+ million on Reus (even if there was any truth to it) as anything but an expensive folly.

Lucas Digne rumours seem to be circling again - might be some truth to those.

  17. Forget Reus. His injury record should rule out any deal. Get Mario Gotze on loan with an option to buy

  18. I think we're done on in but hopefully not on the outs then there's the chance to shake it all about.

  19. I understand he completed the medical yesterday but the Doctor's have flown back out to try to explain to Brendan that he has signed Benteke.

The last I heard Brendan was still in denial and saying " Ben who? I don't know what you're talking about". It could be a long wait.......

  20. i prefer barca's Pedro to Reus, he has more experience which liverpool need so much in its attack line

    ReplyDelete
  21. It would be hard to say no to Reus or Pedro but we really are well stocked for that type of plater.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That would certainly fill the goal up and make it more difficult for opponents to score but Elephants are not much better than Mig on crosses and their distribution leaves a lot to be desired

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good Elephant's are not cheap these days either

    ReplyDelete
  24. But they are designed to take plenty of criticism.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Probably lose it during African Cup of Nations as well

    ReplyDelete
  26. We could always try to get an Indian elephant from Jamaica I suppose..

    ReplyDelete
  27. Might just lack a bit of experience

  28. Benteke pictured at Lime St. Got to presume medical been passed & deal announced tomorrow.

  29. B Rodgers should spend the £46 M he is thinking of spending on M Reus should spent on these two central midfielders :

A Mobile Tough Tackling Defensive Midfielder: Lars Bender Of Bayer Leverkusen for £15-£20M to bring some energy , mobility, protection to back four that only L Leiva does at club but due to his lack of energy, mobility and pace he is not as effective or as good as Fernandinho, Matic, Schneiderlin and Wanyama.

A World Class Centre Midfielder: M Pjanic Of Roma for £21-£26M to bring the extra class creativity experience goals and quality to Centre Midfield.

These two central midfielders should be brought to club :

So the competition for places should be as follows:

Bender and Leiva compete for the DM position

Can, Henderson and Milner compete for CM

Coutinho, Lallana and Pjanic compete for the Furthest forward attacking Cm

    ReplyDelete
  30. Think there's enough competition for places in midfield.any more would be unhealthy! Maybe a DM if Joe allen could be sold but I think emre can could be the man to do that job..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Rodgers actually went to Rome to discuss Pjanic, and they said £37m minimum, so that's one out of the window.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Maybe Illaremendi Ash hoping there is some truth there,

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jamie, did you see the latest mentioning of Messi, I feel sure you would approve ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Rodgers after Benteke is announced.

Journo: So you did not know about Benteke?

Rodgers: It is outstanding that I never knew we were negotiating a deal for him. I should keep quiet on these situations more often with a wink at the end.

  35. JF saying all the right things !!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's just taken too long, I feel like he won't fit our youth policy anymore now, we should renegotiate the fee.

    ReplyDelete
  37. If Rafa loves us as much as he says, a last minute, season long loan on generous terms could make this an amazing window

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't understand why Chelsea unnecessarily waste 10 players instead of just buying an elephant instead...

    ReplyDelete
  39. This is not the kind of player that we are capable of attracting given the present state of the club. The battle between R Madrid and LFC for a player??! Just need to get real!!!
For now we shall stick with the present batch of players + Benteke. Don't get me wrong, they still have the capacity to mount a serious challenge for the fourth spot in the league if properly managed and deployed.

  40. imagine Reus signing for us , jesus ! the kop and the other sides of the stadium would be bouncing mad

  41. Agree completely with you about Can, I think he's got everything to his game to be a monster for us sitting deep in midfield.
