Marquee Signing? 'World-class' £20m LFC target confirms transfer 'meeting' next week with Chelsea. Chance for Liverpool?

In May, the agent of Liverpool target Petr Cech revealed that Chelsea had granted the coveted stopper permission to 'negotiate' a transfer with 'interested parties'. After falling fown the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, Cech understandably wants a move, and Blues boss Jose Mourinho has now confirmed that he's willing to let the Czech international leave.

When asked today about Cech's future, Mourinho hinted that he'd be amenable to a swap deal. He told BT Sport:

"Every club that is interested in Petr, I can find a player that I like in that team too. I will have to accept any decision that the owner makes"

Over the weekend, Cech reiterated once again that he wants to leave, and insisted that he's 'keeping all options open' with regards to his next move. He told reporters:

"Next week we will have a meeting with Chelsea. At the moment it is with my agent. When it is clearer and all the cards are on the table, we will decide. It does not matter whether it is England, Germany, France or Spain".

So: £20m-rated Cech is available, and is allowed to speak to other clubs? Get on it, Brendan:

* Just pay whatever it takes to bring Cech to Anfield. A top-class goalkeeper is absolutely essential to any team's chances of consistently challenging for trophies, and Mignolet is not the long-term solution.

* After playing second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois, there's almost certainly no chance of sealing the deal unless Rodgers guarantees to make Cech his first-choice goalkeeper, and for a winner with Cech's history and experience, that should not be a problem. Just do it.

* Cech has proven himself repeatedly over the last 8-10 years, and it's (arguably) as close to a sure-thing as it's possible to get.

* Cech could conceivably be Liverpool's number one 'keeper for the next 5-7 years. A good comparison here is Edwin Van Der Sar - he signed for Man United at the age of 35, and remained the club's main goalkeeper for six years.

* Cech is a winner, and a leader at the back, which is exactly what Liverpool need. Plus, with the ongoing exodus of older players at Anfield, another experienced head at the club will be a huge boost.

* I'd much rather see Liverpool pay a a huge £100k+ salary to Cech - a proven, world-class performer - than a pretender like Raheem Sterling.

* If Liverpool can pay James Friggin' Milner £150k-a-week, then the club can clearly afford to pay for Cech, who is infinitely better value than the Man City bit-part player.

Cech is a popular choice amongst Liverpool fans. I recently conducted a poll on the site asking fans to select one goalkeeper out of the seven currently linked:

* 55% of participants chose Cech as Liverpool's next goalkeeper.

* Sergio Romero was 2nd-favourite with 11% of the vote.

* Only 3% voted to keep Mignolet as LFC's number 1.

Liverpool's lack of Champions League football is a problem, but if the club really pushes out the boat, and shows Cech how much he's wanted, then it may make all the difference.

Unless Cech has already told the club he's not interested, I fail to see why Liverpool are not making him the club's number-one transfer target.

Cech is available; wants a move, and is a proven, experienced top quality goalkeeper, with years left at the top level.

Where's the downside?

I'd even go so far as to say that Liverpool should scrap the James Milner deal and use the cash to pay Cech, who will (IMO) be far more important to the team.

The Reds pulled out of the Loic Remy deal without any problem, so the precedent is already established.

  1. Why are you so much against the Milner deal that you are mentioning him even in this article? He is a very good signing imo.

  2. Jaimie vs the Frigman in the Octagon - now that is a fight I would pay to see..

    ReplyDelete
  3. He was quoted this morning saying he does'nt want to move house or change his kids schools. Going Arsenal i'd say

    ReplyDelete
  4. A top striker is more needed than a goalkepper plus Cech wants to stay in London

  5. Hey Jaimie I made a valid comment on the article ---"Done Deal: Liverpool sign 'wonderful' £26m playmaker who'll earn obscene salary of £150k-a-week |Liverpool-Kop.com" --- but my comment was removed when I said nothing that went against the comment policy.

This is what the comment said: I see whee you are coming from from a statistical point of view but there may be some element of truth to his argument, albeit a small one. Once the deal had been announced there were Man City fans who were moaning about what a big loss he will be and how he brings so much to the team; its looks to me like he is a very appreciated and underrated player from City.
Even though he was a bit part player at City, they were still willing to offer him £165,000 per week and he STILL turns them down, so at least he is not a "Mercenary" who jumps at money the first chance he gets(I know 150k a week is a lot but that hasn't been confirmed as I've seen reports of him being paid 100k per week), he wants first team football and he has the passion and desire to move clubs to get it.
And he also provides experience in a relatively inexperienced squad so we need that burning desire to win. We have seen too many times our team being behind in a match, giving up and not looking like they'll get back in the game; Milner will provide that experience to grab the youngsters and the game by the scruff of the neck and make a comeback.

????? What's wrong with that and why was it removed???

Is it because you disagree with my comment?

  6. No chance, wants his kids to stay in London schools.

  7. Hey Darovar - none of your comments have been deleted. I've checked the logs. I don't know what happened, but it's not a deletion. Thanks.

  8. Don't hold your hopes up for a top marquee signing because we won't be getting one. Our marquee signings last year was Lovren, lallana and balotelli . This season is milner, Ings and Origi . Hopefully we get Cheryshev who's never played once for real Madrid first team lol.Im glad we're bringing in a lot of English internationals though because we nearly scored against Ireland who's team is made up of part mid to low premiership players and championship players .

    ReplyDelete
  9. But we've never signed world class players before

    ReplyDelete
  10. Torres? Suarez ? Xabi Alonso? Mascherano? James Friggin Milner?

    ReplyDelete
  11. No, the Mercenary is far more marketable and although I mean a different thing by saying this, bus valuable.

    ReplyDelete
  12. We create world class players .

    ReplyDelete
  13. You mean Gerrard? Owen? Adam Morgan?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I disagree- you delete comments you don't like.

    This comment is a win-win.

  15. To be honest I don't see why Cech would come to us. He won't be short of options. I'd be shocked if he doesn't end up at Arsenal. He'd be a guaranteed starter, would play Champions League football and wouldn't have to uproot his family.

  16. this is how well line up next season

    --------------------------------Mingolet

well sell sterling for £40m, borini for £10m, aspas for £5m, Lambert for £5m, Coates for £5m. we'll get £65m from that and it will go right back into the club, and rightly so, never should the club give a penny to useless manager who has wasted 210m and yet we have no world class players. we are going to have to pay the price for having a manager who is a anybody from the street, proven nothing in the game, and make do with Allen, Lallana, Borini, Lovren, Markovic etc for the next 5 years until there contracts run out.

thankyou Brendan Rodgers for making my beloved world class club mediocre.

our best hope is that Hyppia comes in, goodness me who is Colin Pascoe?? nuh honestly, all of these wonderful Kopites who have great knowledge of the LFC way and football itself, are more worthy of jobs at LFC than Brendan Rodgers and Colin Pascoe....Colin Pascoe? LFC? absolute joke....go take your crap coaching somewhere else. hopefully Hypia can show BR the real LFC way, seen as we cant get King Rafa...and if brendan cant shape up he can take his crap coaching elsewhere as well

    ReplyDelete
  17. None of the players you mentioned were WC before they came to liverpool. So, yes?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Just a side note, if it was deleted, it should still show up in his history, shouldn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Exactly... the issue here isn't Liverpool wanting Cech or being willing to pay his wages.

The issue is why would Cech want to come to Liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's no good asking me "where's the downside". You're the expert ! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. milner is a good signing, but thats what we said about Lallana, thats what we said about Allen, thats what we said about Lambert. you can have one, but you cant have them all. its not as if they are Neymars and Suarez's. they are far from luxury players, they are all overated and the truth is they can only perform at a truly high level with world class players around them. English players are good but only with world class internationals around them which is why when England play together they win zilch. Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard are all world class at club level with there club teammates around them.

if we wanted Milner we shouldnt have bought Allen, Lallana, Henderson etc. you can only have one or 2, the rest of the team needs spanish, french and south american stars around them. but us.....

  22. Can't the club just move to London? it's starting to get annoying really with us missing out first class talent

    ReplyDelete
  23. Morientes was and flopped big time, So, yes;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, you're right. It should show up there.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Okay, Khedira is good enough for Juve Serie A Champions, Coppa Italia Winner and CL finalist, but not mid-table LFC who fight to scrape through Top 4?
Just as I expected, we are inept in transfer dealings, as usual.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That is smart business picking up Cech, which is exactly Liverpool will miss out because the board will be too busy with their heads in the sand.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Suarez won the MVP in the Dutch league and he was wearing the captain band for Ajax.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cech to Liverpool.. hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  29. Maybe because Juventus are all those things and we are not

    ReplyDelete
  30. That makes him a very good player, but nowhere near what he is now. Heitinga, El Hamdaoui, Theo Janssen all won poty too, but they're not world class, are they?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jamie Friggin Milner and Danny Ings are more than good enough for free, who needs proven winners like Khedira

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, the Dutch league being the pinnacle of football.

Bryan Ruiz, Mateja Kezman, Alfonso Alves, all scored goals galore in Holland, all failed intthe prem

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't think anyone said he wasn't good enough. It was about his injury history. Juve have the personnel to deal with his absence if he gets hurt. We don't. How can we put all our trust in this guy to lead the midfield if we can't even be sure he'll stay fit? I thought we learned our lesson with Sturridge last season...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Scrap both Milner and Ings and bring a quality addition like Cech I say.

Unfortunately he will not be interested in playing ahead of a defence made up of square pegs round holes.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sorry if I implied that you deleted it but when I checked my profile and comment history and it said that my comment had been removed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 'Juve have the personnel to deal with his absence if he gets hurt'

with respect, that is like the worst excuse I have ever heard.

    ReplyDelete
  37. But we ran after a certain Falcao

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes because Cech, a fantastic goalkeeper who could have his pick of clubs would come to us because...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Or interested in playing for a team not in CL.

    ReplyDelete
  40. How about the six players who have left since 2009 and have gone on to win the CL.

    ReplyDelete
  41. And look how he turned out at Utd.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It really hasn't much to do with that.

The club hasn't proven capable of sustaining any real amount of success over the past 25 years. And it's only gotten worse over the most recent 5 years.

It's a tough cycle to end.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Brendan will convince him mate.

    ReplyDelete
  44. He could always use one of his brentisms

    ReplyDelete
  45. Knew this was coming. Look at sturridge and Robin Van Friggin Persie won Manchester United their 20th title

    ReplyDelete
  46. Khedira would have been an absolute dream signing. Juventus building a mean squad.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I thought the sarcasm was implied. In Saturday's CL final, we had 2 out of 22 players on the field...

    ReplyDelete
  48. and more important not by money galore, but shrewd piece of business... look at their first eleven... I bet its cheaper than our bench...

    ReplyDelete
  49. "My biggest mentor is myself because I've had to study and that's been my biggest influence."

That is all Rodgers has to say to Cech.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It's a gamble. RVP payed off. Falcao didn't. Sturridge did for one season, but couldn't even play last season. Khedira is a dream player, but could we justify paying the wages he would demand to step down a level if we couldn't even be sure he would be on the pitch the whole time? For me, that's just a risk I don't think we're in the position to take.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That's just mental.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I like your Pepe avatar!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Crazy stuff. Here we go offering Milner an outstanding contract and sign Ings on Burnley's conditions.

So much to look forward to.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I reckon he could be persuaded; with copious amounts of chloroform, some gaffer tape and a neuralyzer to obliterate his memory.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Haha! Found it awhile ago... just realized it's the perfect pic for my prof yesterday :D

    ReplyDelete
  56. He was earning 120k per week, less than what we are paying for James Friggin Milner.

    ReplyDelete
  57. He's earning 120k per week and playing for the UCL finalists. Do you think he'll accept the same thing to play for a 6th place EPL team in Europa?

    ReplyDelete
  58. But but but... JFM is a workaholic

    ReplyDelete
  59. He was willing to take a pay cut to join Arsenal not so long ago to not to sit in the bench of Real Madrid

    ReplyDelete
  60. So, when Mario Gomez stepped down from Bayern to Fiorentina, he went from 100 k a week to a million..good for him

    ReplyDelete
  61. It would be a great signing but I would be surprised if we have the minerals to pull it off.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Chelsea supporters are having a laugh too.

  68. Khedira is an injury waiting to happen.

Quality player, but not reliable to stay healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Even Messi had his fair share of injuries. Look at Arjen Robben Bayern are paying massive wages for him, but he gets injured regularly. I'm sure Bayern can get anybody they want and replace him but he wins matches for them... Proven game changer..they are a completely different team with him in the side. We need players who can step up and Khedira is a defensive midfielder something we badly need at the moment

    ReplyDelete
  70. Agreed but,
2 weeks of Khedira impact > 2 years of Allen

    ReplyDelete
  71. Careful now, don't want to risk 'a booting'.

    ReplyDelete
  72. ACDC and Crowded House. Cannot go wrong there.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Disparaging the boot is a bootable offense.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think you should know Brendan Rodgers won't be happy With that comment. Joe allen shows great character and you should too

    ReplyDelete
  75. Khedira has even admitted he was not sure why he was left out of the Madrid starting eleven. Player of the highest quality, one which would have improved us on a massive scale.

Juventus have him now and will improve them.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Outstanding.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  84. You might be on to something there. Is this how we secured Mignolet?

    ReplyDelete
  85. A top class goalie should be a priority but we have brought a free in instead, our defense was a shambles last year and it looks like Rodgers isn't after a specialist DM and is more than likely going to put milner there .....its raining goals alleluia........

    ReplyDelete
  86. It could explain our transfer policy for the last three years at least

    ReplyDelete
  87. A work mate borrowed my paper headed to the toilets and said I'm off for a Rodgers .....not sure what he meant

    ReplyDelete
