Marquee Transfer: 'Superhuman' €35m goal-machine offered to Liverpool confirms he'll sign for another club this summer. LFC?

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Liverpool and Arsenal are currently favourites to sign Porto goal-machine Jackson Martinez, and the man himself has now confirmed that he is leaving the Portuguese giants this summer. What are you waiting for, Brendan?

On Tuesday, reports in Italy claimed that Liverpool and Arsenal have been 'offered' the chance to sign Martinez this summer, and when asked about his future last night, the Colombian striker told reporters:

“We’re waiting to see what my future will be, because I’ve already received permission from Porto to leave the club.

Liverpool's interest in Martinez - hailed in April by Porto boss Julien Loptegui as 'superhuman - is long established. Most recently:

* NOV 2014: The Daily Maill reported: "Porto's Jackson Martinez has been offered to Liverpool"

* DEC 2014: Martinez's agent claimed: "Liverpool are in for Jackson. AC Milan? That's unlikely".

* FEB 2015: ESPN reported: "Liverpool and Tottenham are interested in acquiring his [Martinez's] services".

* FEB 2015: Martinez confirmed that he wants to leave: "I'm ready to make the leap. When the transfer window reopens, we shall see what will happen."

Martinez is the real deal. Since arriving at the Estádio do Dragão, Martinez - who has a €35m release clause in his contract has racked up some formidable creative stats:

* 92 goals/14 assist in 133 appearances (Goal/assist every 1.2 games)

* Once scored in 10 successive games for Porto.

* At one point, scored 18 goals in 17 games.

* Broke Falcao's record by scoring 11 goals in 12 matches for Porto.

106 goals/assists in 133 games? That is a superb creative return for Porto, and it'll be a major coup if Liverpool are able to seal this deal. Martinez - nicknamed 'Cha-Cha-Cha' - will represent formidable competition for Daniel Sturridge, and the Colombian clearly has the talent and goalscoring ability to keep the England man on his toes.

A major plus point: Martinez has suffered just one minor injury throughout his entire career (disrupted calf muscle), which is quite amazing for a 28-year old player. Clearly, he's cut from the same cloth as Luis Suare.

So, to recap: Martinez is available AND is allowed to speak with other clubs. If Liverpool are not already talking with Martinez's Agent, then WHY NOT?

Stop wasting time with Milner, Ings et al, and make Martinez and Luciano Vietto the club's top transfer targets.

Those two strikers are my preferred attacking targets for this summer; they're both available (Vietto has a £14m buyout clause), and the Reds have long, confirmed transfer histories with both players (i.e. Agents publicly confirms the Reds' interest on numerous occasions).

As such, if Liverpool fail to make concerted effort to sign at least one Martinez or Vietto, it will (IMO) be massive transfer negligence (again)

One or both may ultimately reject Liverpool, but the club still has to do everything in its power to TRY and make it happen.

Make it so, Liverpool.

  1. Perfect option. He isn't a big name diva that will make demands, but he's still wildly talented and proven to the highest degree. He'll be in his prime, and like you say, injuries are pretty much a non factor. The biggest thing for me though is that he's a pure finisher, which is really what we've been missing. Our midfield is creative heavy, so we REALLY need someone to just finish off the moves. Maybe later we can bring in someone who can do it all, but right now, we need to start with just scoring goals!

  2. We won't sign martinez, it'll be Ings or if that fails somebody along the lines of Fletcher from sunderland or Austin from qpr. Sorry for the sarcasm but I've lost all faith in BR to bring in the players we need.

  3. fair shout...luciano is a fine choice for us sadly it seems we're not a choice of his...time for bren to use that silver tongue to positive effect!

  4. I'd live us to get him, think he's a much better option than Benteke (for our style of play) Just don't believe it will happen though.

  5. Apparently Athletico are after Vietto - if true our chances of signing him have taken a hit

  6. Ings it is then?.

  7. Konoplyanka is about to sign for Stoke on £100,000 a week, on a free..........................where are FSG???.

  8. Regarding your side note, that was what I've been saying for the better part of the past 3 months.

My issue was never with FSG for firing Rodgers. My issue would be to fire him with no adequate improvement for a replacement to come in.

I don't think Ancelotti will ever come here. I didn't think Klopp would come here, and I'm not certain that De Boer is that much of an improvement that I'd bet the house on finishing any better next year.

What I'm hoping is that Rodgers and the team do well to start the season. However, if things aren't getting better, I hope Klopp is willing to come here around January.

  9. Perhaps it's because we don't need another winger unless raheem is leaving?

  10. Question why is it we always consider new strikers to be adequate competition for sturridge ? He has had one good season in his entire career which happened to be for us when suarez was with us. He's always injured, nothing special in my opinion if anything we should be looking for a new main first team striker which with sturridge as a number 2 not focus on someone to potentially be behind sturridge. Martinez is a perfect option but I do feel benteke would be a fine addition big strong and quick I'm fed up of players like lallana and sterling who get bullied by the likes of stoke.

  11. Free transfers:
    Konoplyanka
    Andre Ayew
    Milner
    Ings (tribunal fee)
If FSG don't want to give BR money, go and get those payers, better than the rubbish he bought last summer.

  12. Konoplyanka is way above Sterling.

  13. Way way way above Sterling.

  14. Our transfers are crazy!!!.......................free transfer too.

  15. Why would any top player come to Liverpool? No CL and a manager who is like a low profile prisoner on death row.

  16. I agree, but we still need to offload someone... We can't afford to have than many wingers on our books when there's a chance none will leave.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Do you mean "taller"?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sakho is a good shout, but unlikely, since Lovren was meant to bench him.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I just can't think of a reason we wouldn't even try to sign Konoplyanka on a free. Just makes no sense, dude.

Unless... the club is trying to maximise Sterling's transfer fee by not making him look dispensable by getting a replacement in pre-emptively.

  20. I am not sure about Skrtel. I never really remember him commanding our defence, how can he command the team?

  21. How dare you call Rodgers low profile!

  22. i dont wanna rain on anybodies parade but if jackson is so good then why would he sign for liverpool........im a realist where a top 8 team at best as it stands with a manager no one has heard of ( me included before liverpool got him )

  23. Reports are Vietto's buyout clause may not apply outside of Spain and his proffered destination is Atleti

  24. in not sure if any defender at liverpool can communicate any better than a chimpanzee at a tea party .....non of them no where each other is ,they challenge for the same balls and mark imaginary players .......and you wanna make one of these guys captain.......do me a favor

  25. its got last big pay day written all over it .......150 grand a week for an upgrade on downing

    ReplyDelete
  26. why spend 100g aweek on a 25 year old game changer when you can spend 150g a week on a 30 year old grafter

    ReplyDelete
  27. or perhaps he doesnt want to play full back

  28. We all know the transfer commitee are brainless. It's just aswell, as this is a no brainer. But alas I can't see it happening as JM is not part of the transfer policy and £35m is way out of our league. I'd love to be plesantly suprised though.

  29. of course it is..sigh

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well when the 30 year old is British, how could you pass that up!

    ReplyDelete
  31. idf we dont sign a player who can score 20 plus goals we will struggle big time next year trust me ........forget mr glass i can see him missing big chunks of next year and there is no one else in that squad who will get any where near 20 goals

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree. But I have faith that Sturridge will come back firing. Although we should still go for a top class striker and a Vietto

    ReplyDelete
  33. I like JFM!!!!!

  34. The lads would look a bit strange in black and white stripes

    ReplyDelete
  35. i have no faith in sturridge and i think he is mentally weak ...for me hes a fair weather player ...when its good its good but when the chips are down hell vanish with an injury, and next year with no real quality on the pitch bar say tino and at a push hendo and lallana the pressure will bo on

    ReplyDelete
  36. i dont think vietto could hack it up front at liverpool ,i dont think he could handle the expectation

    ReplyDelete
  37. Don't understand, what is the difference in the clause in and out of Spain?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sorry to be so negative but I cannot see either signing happening. Vietto will go Atletico and Martinez will go to Arsenal and we'll end up with Ings and an injured Sturridge and a misfiring Balotelli.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Take the negativity somewhere else please.

  40. The buyout clause might only be for domestic transfers, i.e. between two spanish clubs

    ReplyDelete
  41. But it is more for foreign clubs, that makes no sense?

  42. Souness did this when he bought Mark Wright and made him captain and that did put him under pressure and his form suffered. But it was different back then as Liverpool had a few players left from the title wining squad and Souness appointment had already divided the camp into old players v new players so Wright was seen as a outsider.

Evans also did it with Ince after Liverpool were crying out for a more in your face captain after Barnes. I think it worked for that period of time Ince relished the role unfortunately he came a season to late as evens team had come to the end of the road.

Rodger is kinda in a similar situation to the young Evans team w with a need for a leader and I think like Ince, Milner has the experience to take on the role with immediate effect. I think him being a former Leeds player will help him understand playing for Liverpool quicker than other players like in the past e.g Joe Cole. as both clubs have similar passionate fan base.

Henderson looks the part but we all know that he acts the role more than he is the captian. As for Skrtel I think the captaincy would affect his form when he tries to hard he makes mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  43. James Milner has done nothing in a Liverpool jersey and to begin anything with, he has not even signed for us. I don't know who decides the captaincy for the team but in all possibilities, this person should not be that moronic to undermine all existing senior players by allowing a newly-joined and former reserve player of another team to leapfrog them in becoming the new captain after legendary Steven Gerrard. Not unless some genius at the management thinks James Milner is the 'genuine' marquee signing in a long time which may also be possible given the present plight of the team.

  44. I supposed no loyal fans will object to the idea of crowd funding a uber to send him to spain!

  45. LFC handling of contracts is the real joke. Skrtel the latest to criticise his contract offer.

    ReplyDelete
  46. When you consider he often is a sub it's not so bad... Perhaps a comparison of goals and assists/90 compared to current midfield players and targets would be interesting

    ReplyDelete
  47. Just did the math and he is at roughly an assist every 3 matches and a goal every 4 when factoring it per 90 min played. I think that kind of contribution in a full time role would be deemed a success

    ReplyDelete
  48. And it took you this long to say it? Anyway let's see if your tactical genuis stays beyond new year /end.
    MR. POSITIVE!

  49. Just because Milner was a winner doesn't mean he's going to make us winners, especially the team we've got.

His personal stats are almost 400 league games and 38 goals.

He's not superman to carry this mediocre team all by himself.

Milner was part of team which had Toure, silva, aguero and they weren't good enough to win anything this year and we will have Henderson, lucas, Joe Allen and balloteli.

Milner alone is not a match winner but Sterling is and can only get better if he concentrates on his game

  50. KickStarter campaign to raise money to buy sterling out from liverpool, i like it.
