Record Fee? 'Terrific' £12m attacker confirms he's 'joining Liverpool' and hails 'great players' at the club

Last week, Liverpool publicly confirmed that the club had 'agreed personal terms' with 'terrific' Burnley striker Danny Ings, and with the transfer fee yet to be decided, the 22-year old has revealed his happiness at him impending move to Anfield.

On Tuesday, Ings - the recent subject of a £12m bid from Spurs - posted the following message on his Twitter account:

"Thanks for your messages. Delighted to be joining Liverpool. A special club with great players. I will give everything to be successful"

Many fans - myself included - are underwhelmed by deal, but Anfield legend Jamie Carragher is convinced that Ings will do the business for Liverpool, and over the weekend, he explained why:

"He [Ings] did very well at Burnley. You could see his hold-up play and his work ethic, and when he got chances he finished more often than not. He had a very good season"

Ings 'finished more often than not'? Hmmm, nice bit of spin there, Carra, but it's not true in the slightest. Last season:

* 11 goals in 37 games from 100 shots (35 shots on target).

* 9 shots for every goal scored (11% conversion rate)

* only 35% of shots on target across the season (65% of shots off-target)

* Less than ONE shot on target per game

As you can see, Ings actually failed to finish more often than not, and to be honest, his conversion rate is pretty poor overall. It's all moot now, though - Ings is a Liverpool player, and hopefully he'll improve his conversion rate next season.

In the meantime, Liverpool face the prospect of paying a British record tribunal fee for Ings, which could reach up to £8m, which is a fairly substantial sum of money for a striker with such a poor conversion rate.

One final sobering statistic: 35-year old Steven Gerrard (a midfielder) achieved a better minutes-per-goal ratio than 22-year old Ings (a striker) this season:

* Gerrard: 248 minutes-per-goal.

* Ings: 275 minutes-per-goal.

Draw your own conclusions from that...

  1. Were in a RIGHT MESS - Trouble is FSG have given B R a vote of confidence BUT the fans have not .If we start poorly then another Horror Season will follow. For the Club to go move forward we need DIRECTION FROM TOM WERNER - The invisible man - Says it all. B R stays = Why ?? Other 2 lads sacked - Why ?? These are questions that need addressing TODAY

  2. Maybe the difference is because ,

Gerrard plays in a team full of outstanding superstars
Ings plays in a team that has been relegated .

  3. Citing stats are all well and good, but we have to take into account the sides both Gerrard and Ings played in. One reason why stats are a flwed argument is the fact that one can't project how well or badly a player will do in a new team based on his numbers for another. Bearing in mind that Burnley lacked creativity and quality last season, a key contributor to why the went down, whereas, had our strikers done their jobs, converted the chances that fell to them we might even have finished higher up the table. Is Ings the answer? Of course not, but he's a step in the right direction, hopefully.

  4. a lot of fans aren't very happy about the owners getting players on the cheap, if you forget about how much they cost and just look at the players and which ever way you look at it they will improve the team and that's what counts, Milner will fit right in with Henderson an ings is better than all our strikers apart from sturidge when fit so I welcome them both and look forward to watching them.

  5. Genuine question, was Ings on penalties at Burnley?

I have to say when I saw Ings pay he was a far better fit for us than Borini, Ballotelli and Lambert in terms of playing style.

He's also a better finisher than sterling. On that basis he'll be an improvement for us in my opinion.

The goals he scored were often very good ones too. Not exactly easy chances.

He also seems to create a fair bit and that was in a relegated team.

I still think we need a defensive midfielder. Although I don't hate BR as much as most on here, I think FSG have to talk to Klopp. He clearly is angling to come here.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ings was directly responsible for half of Burnleys PL goals.......................that isn't shabby for a rubbish team.

    ReplyDelete
  7. He might just be fishing for compliments but if he did come the fans would soon be carping about him too.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Klopp to Liverpool? It cod happen but I'm not sure it's the right plaice for him.

  9. As long as the few remains relatively low, I don't mind this signing. I still think we need to get in a more exciting 'top class' player. But I can't see Ings doing a worse job than Balotelli and Lambert combined.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Ings deserves a chance so instead of questioning him now (without seeing him play for the club yet), why not give him the support he needs to succeed? He may not be the striker everyone wants but he is a striker Liverpool need in my opinion.

  11. Gerrards comments regarding the sacking of the 2 supporting coaches is quite interesting... i hope more comes from this

    ReplyDelete
  12. That Gerrard comparison is stupid and misleading. Gerrard scored a lot of penalties and his total minutes on the pitch were low. he's therefore going to have a decent minutes to goal ratio. It doesn't relate to his in play contributions

    ReplyDelete
  13. More likely, Rodgers flogged his assistants to the board and saved his skin .

    ReplyDelete
  14. I can remember not being that enamoured by Aldridge joining but he did OK

    ReplyDelete
  15. He's not just any John dory though, his appointment would have many breaming from ear to eat.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ings, Origi and a fit Sturridge (maybe him and the club are now trying to under-promise "on his fitness / comeback" and then over-deliver) are a pretty decent strikeforce. Young, fast, fluid and interchangeable. Spending £30m on Benteke (who has really only produced 2 half seasons and is injured a lot) is a big risk and no guarantee of success. Problem is we are not in the CL and are not a London club (which does matter to foreigners) so the chances of us getting Mandjukic, Reus, Lazacette etc are very slim and if a top top striker chooses an EPL club outside London than sadly (but it's reality) they will always choose City or Utd above us because they not only play in the CL but they can also and do pay more money. To get one of those top players we will have to pay a higher fee and blow our competitors away on wages so that the player votes with his wallet. Offering a bit more for a Sanchez won't get him to choose us over Arsenal, we would have to offer 50k/week more

    ReplyDelete
  17. If it results in Hyppia as a defensive coach (and boy do we need one of those) then I think that will be a good outcome and many / most fans would take that

    ReplyDelete
  18. The fact that LFC/FSG or even Rodgers have not confirmed the sackings of Pascoe and Marsh could suggest that there are further issues that still have to be resolved behind the scenes.

But agree, the club should at least come out and explain why Pascoe and Marsh were sacked. Stevie having his few cents yesterday at Rodgers was also quite interesting.

The way the issue is being handled is showing LFC to be very poor.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Agreed. If we exclude all the direct set-pieces from the statistics the situation is a bit different: Gerrard 4 - Ings 10 (Gerrard hit 5 penalties and 1 free-kick, where as Ings only 1 penalty). Also, Ings managed 4 assists compared to Gerrard's woeful 1.

What I'm saying is, JK give Ings a chance before you pass a judgement. We are getting the lad relatively cheaply considering he is a young HG player with a pedigree already earned at the EPL level. There is still time to improve. Yet, the tribunal decision is also still up in the air and it might be less than £8M.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Are we really going to spend the next two months lambasting both Ings and James F Milner before either of them have kicked a ball for our club? I actually like Ings, and he's a damned site more natural ability than he's often given credit for. I know this because I've actually watched him play. Plus he's only 22 (though he could pass for 40) and will hopefully improve. Decent skill and dribbling ability, good movement on and off the ball, and an excellent work-ethic. Who cares what his stats were like this season playing in front of a shit Burnley midfield? He's a definite upgrade on the hapless Borini, the lazy Balotelli and the ponderous Lambert.

  21. A possible 50-year-old, depending on his diet and exercise regimen?

    ReplyDelete
  22. As long as he nets a few.

  23. Millner and Ings is not givng BR a vote of confidence. That's the biggest no confidence vote possible...Nice work LFC, think we're getting a player free and ending up paying 8mill. Just like when we tried to sign him in Jan without realising that it is illegal to do so... We are absolute joke... This is us: We buy players on the cheep that turn out to be very costly mistakes cause we don't need them(llori/aspas/millner/Inge/Balo). Or we spend millions on players no other club wants (lanana/Allen/lovern/sakho etc) Remember this. Cheep is expencive, Quality is cheep.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nobody thought we would get him for free, there's was always going to be a compensation fee of at least several million set by tribunal. What Liverpool have done is move quickly to make two (relatively) cheap, early signings that will *both* improve the squad, and add movement and energy. It might not excite the fan base but there is a definite logic behind both of those signings.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The'yll want his head on a pike.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We have now got terrific ings, workaholic Milners and possibly Adam bogdam.... With what seems to be an "Outstanding" manager at helm, we're in for a title shout

    ReplyDelete
  27. We thought we would get him for 4.5 mill... Can you answer me honestly, do you think we would have signed him if we knew it was 8mill. It could be as high as 12mill... The very last thing we need is to improve the squad. Add 3 first team players and then the squad immediately improves by the other three becoming squad players.. Surly that's better logic.

    ReplyDelete
  28. LFC: the only team I know who buys players then clears them out the next season because they are crap

    ReplyDelete
  29. We'll need to call a sturgeon.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hopefully the final cost won't be as high as that, it's all pure speculation and as nothing is set in stone I guess we can only wait and see. But as a young, promising striker he's easily worth 8 or so million, at least in today's market.

I'd say the squad *does* need improvement, not in terms of numbers but definitely in terms of quality in certain positions. Don't forget we're losing several players too. Since Borini, Balotelli and Lambert haven't worked out at all I expect all of them to be moved on. Ings and Origi will come in which leaves space for (hopefully) an established, proven goalscorer.

I definitely agree about the need to bring in two or three quality first team players and I expect (hope) that will be the focus of our summer business.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I know a good sturgeon with a Gray mullet.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We will have to get rid of Balotelli, Aspas, Lambert and Borini first otherwise we will be sitting with 7 strikers including Sturridge, Ings and Origi. Plus there is also Sterling should he stay.

The likely hood of another striker arriving is very slim right now and quite honestly, a lineup of Sturridge who is a walking injury, Ings another 'let's see how it pans out signing' and Origi who may not even be ready for the EPL is most likely going to see us either struggle or carry on like we did last season.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I admire your positivity. I had it before the last 6 games. The very fact we have to sell borini and lambert and Balo etc sets off alarm bells to me... We bought two last season and the other has 1 year on his contract... Who is making these crazy mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife

  39. God Loges the window hasnt even opened and we have two good gets.
Borini and Lambert and Aspas are near certs to go and Balotelli is likely gone as well at least wait until the window has been opened a month before fretting.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think we should get Tevez .Always fell he is very good replacement for Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Recent discussions have reported that the fee is expected to be between 5 to 6 mill for Ings although Burnley are wanting closer to 10 mill.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It is easy to say Aspas, Borini and Balo are gone. Finding a buyers and recouping as much as possible is bound to be an uphill battle.

    ReplyDelete
  43. In my experience the community will complain about any player who has failed to come from a famous overseas club until he scores a long range goal, after which point he will be regarded by them as a player of great stature. We are not complicated people.

    ReplyDelete
  44. £8m tribunal fee?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Almost double what Villareal paid for Vietto's services last season.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lambert and Aspas are virtually sold Borini has interest only Balotelli may be difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  47. We would recoup that if we were to sell.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The Football Observatory’s top 30 most expensive players

    1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) £205m

    2. Eden Hazard (Chelsea) £109m

    3. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) £92m

    5. Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) £63m

    6. Raheem Sterling (Liverpool) £60m

Another example of how Sterling is justified in negotiating the best deal for himself. This will end in tears for Liverpool because they wont get that £60m because the fans with sheep mentality listening to propaganda by the club will force him out the club at a knocked down price.

    ReplyDelete
  49. None of those players apart from Aguero will ever go for that price tag. Its just a research study, not a rule.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You guys said the same about Lambert and Lallana

    ReplyDelete
  51. Liverpool Echo

Brad Jones, Marc Pelosi, Jordan Lussey and Glen Johnson have all now departed the club.

    ReplyDelete
  52. We could have got Remy at that price last season?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Some of the players in that top 30 can go for the price placed on them and for me Sterling is one of those players for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Probably will not struggle with Lambert but Aspas virtually sold to whom?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Pelosi was awfully unlucky with that broken leg. And I'm still not a Johnson-hater :-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hmm, I think he will go for under 50mn..lets see

    ReplyDelete
  57. You guys all realise that was just a load of Pollack's don't you.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I got a feeling that city will snap him up for £30m - £35m which will be criminal if that did happen

    ReplyDelete
  59. Johnson was always willing to stick his head in dangerous places looking to score. Now that he's been severed, I wonder if we'll look on his new team - whomever they may be - with Johnson envy...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Villa wants Lambert and Aspas to Seville on a loan to buy deal you dont think they will ever be sold Loges talk about a worry wart.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just because Aspas is on loan to buy does not mean Sevilla will sign him.

Manquillo is on a 2 year loan with option to buy and most likely will return to his club soon.

    ReplyDelete
  62. See Jaime. Pedantry is it's own reward.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Marsh wasn't sacked. Pascoe was.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Still say it about Lallana. In fact I will say it about every player who ever signs. Why? I'm not a gobshine who belittles and discredits our own players before they kick a ball. Call me old fashioned but until we start calling ourselves football observers or football critics I will support our players.

    ReplyDelete
  65. It's a death row pardon two minutes too late.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Vietto has scored the same number of goals. A smaller proportion of his teams goals.
I like the look of the kid but just being foreign isn't enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  67. That list has Sterling higher than Suarez and players like Robben not even in the top 20. I would not take it very seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well both are gone.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Exactly - it's a worthless list. Sterling higher than Suarez? What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  70. We will never get £60m for Sterling anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Don't want to seem like I always try and find fault in your comments Ray but where have FSG given Brendan a vote of confidence, I'm with you on how it would be nice to hear some clarification on exactly what is going on though.
For the good of the Club and our pre-season I hope the whole managerial saga gets sorted as soon as poss and we can then focus our attentions on getting in the players we need quickly as well.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yes I think you are right our strike force is starting to shape up ok and if (please lordy) the Club can heal Studge on a more permanent basis then we can do well.
Think we'd all still like to see a more proven goal scorer come in though and lets not forget we did beat the others to a certain Mr L Suarez, so it's not impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  73. You're just so god dam optimistic it's infectious, has the transfer window finished already, it was definitely a failure! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Is it all ironic though or was the whole thing just a load of old coincidence :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Jesus christ Jaimie aren't you a ray of sunshine at the moment. Totally right though, our failure to sign top quality players season after season is disturbing.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Definitely, I don't understand why everyone can't see that, if you can convince Logan, I will buy you an imaginary beer.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Agree with that, unless due to ridiculous football inflation rates, I don't see it.
A good reason for him to stay with us - he's not as good at present as a lot suggest and I'm starting to wonder if he will ever reach the predicted world class level, although at least LFC will give him the chance to find out and I hope he stays.

    ReplyDelete
  78. What's to be happy about? Liverpool just got trounced 6-1 by *Stoke City*, and just signed two comparatively average players, one of whom averages 3 league goals a season over the last 5 years.

Liverpool are not the force of old, but that doesn't mean fans should just accept mediocrity. Milner and Ings are decent players, but 'decent' is what sabotaged the club last summer, and left the team in 6th place.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I understand about Ings, that's just a will-he won't-he signing, decent business but he's not going to transform our fortunes.

But it's unrealistically harsh on Milner. His goals and performances for City have been absolutely top class at times. They loved him at City until the end and most of the sane fans wanted him to stay. He's probably the best signing, in terms of box-ticking, we've made since Rodgers took over. Experience, quality, value for money. Just... a straightforwardly solid signing. Surely?

    ReplyDelete
  80. It looks like the list takes into account age and potential as well as past achievements. Im sure that Liverpool will take this list seriously if they want to sell sterling

    ReplyDelete
  81. Lol. Logan will shot Brendan if given a chance

    ReplyDelete
  82. I agree - Milner is a solid signing...as a squad player. As a regular first-teamer and the probable lynchpin of the team's midfield, it's not good enough.

I have no problem with Milner being a utility man/squad player like at City, but judging by his gargantuan salary, Rodgers sees him as the first name on the team-sheet; an everpresent like Hendo, around which he'll build his team.

That is a massive mistake IMO. Liverpool can and should do better.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Depressing, really.

    ReplyDelete
  84. "So, eh... which team do you critically observe mate?"

"Oh, I scrutinise Liverpool. Been analysing them all my life basically. My dad was an Everton critic, but on my 10th birthday he gave me the choice: I could either collate data on the team who had secured a 12.8% improvement on their shots-to-goals ratio over three seasons; or I could invigilate the performances of the team which had secured a year-on-year reduction in interest payments on their amortised subsidiary holdings of an effective 3.4% once inflation was taken into account."

"A simple choice, when you put it like that!"

    [adjusts opera glasses] "Quite".

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hm! Surely not a *massive* mistake. If it's a mistake it's fairly low-risk, because he'll make a contribution all the same, even if he doesn't establish himself in the first team.I think he'll win games for us. He'll get plenty of goals and assists, because he'll be taking the set-pieces, which is something we desperately need.

I'm still hoping like you that there will be some more quality signings to come, especially in midfield. The squad's close to looking competitive again, I feel. I'm very confident we will be a better side next season. Just need that something *extra*.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'll take that with fries.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I agree. I have made the odd joke about him getting the blame for everything but he did some good things though less so more recently.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Well, a knighthood for you then, Mr. Superfan.

This is typical superfan rhetoric - the idea that those who are critical of LFC's decisions are somehow not real fans. You belong on RAWK, not here, where you can surround yourself with likeminded superfans.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I thought you especially Jamie would be positively delighted, to see Liverpool slowly snapping up the whole England squad, I mean come on, what is not to like about that, maybe one day Woy will come back ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  90. On that basis I can't decide whether Ronaldo is overvalued or Messi undervalued.........

    ReplyDelete
  91. I thought Gerrard played for us

    ReplyDelete
  92. I'm not punting Vietto as the answer to our striking woes. My argument is that with Origi coming in, we need experienced strikers who are already comfortable with their skill-set. More youngsters leaves us unbalanced.

I used the Vietto example to suggest to could have saved a Buck on a cheap young back-up by being smart last year. The fact that my subjective eyes suggest that Vietto has more about him than Ings is incidental.

By the way, I'm South African, so they're all 'foreign' to me, although I prefer not to use that term and judge them on their football instead.

    ReplyDelete
  93. At least you have some new figures to play with for future headlines "Man city make a bid for £60m Liverpool star" ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  94. This is kind of attacking Jay Jay, and is belittling. Just cause he tends to be more optimistic and more willing to support rather than just bash is his right. Just as it yours to bash first and be optimistic second.

You had a poster claim true fans were done with BR. But that's just bollocks, no fan is more true than the other.

People make this site, comments like this make people turn away from this site, especially coming from the writer. I respect your views despite the angry rhetoric that is constantly preached, because sometimes it is reality and it's good to face reality sometimes. Of late, you seem very angry and I feel this was a very ill-advised comment. I hope you don't take this as a personal attack, I just wanted you to see this is a pretty rude comment.

Hopefully this doesn't get me ban.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think Ings is better than some are making out though. Certainly not the first choice we need agreed but not a bad player. As for Vietto did Villareal sign him from Argentina? If so we wouldn't have been able to due to work permit issues. He is near enough our player now and despite issues we may have we should back him. We can talk of all those that got away forever.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Well there Mr critical analysis that Mens Living things out that don't suit the argument. Being critical is fine but backing the players is better. They are humans despite how much they get paid and backing them is actually helpful. But you can be a bell end and delete this Anyway so fck off.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It's been fun. See you about.

So true, Riise is still living of his Man utd goal haha Moreno had a hastle free season because he scored at Spurs but was defensively poor all season long. Liverpool fans are famous for it....

    ReplyDelete
  100. He's not a bad player, Ings. I just hope we're not pinning our hopes on him for next season.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Yeah, even I can't deny that. He lost some urgency and precision to his game. Should never have shaved his head.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Completely missing the context of Ings scoring 11 for a relegated team. Think of his skills developing in a top 6 team with service from Coutinho, Henderson etc. Context is key and as so often the lead arguments on here simply ignore it. Please, begin to add some nuanced discussion to the standard stats. Statistics represent only half of any truth and it will be great if you and the site can have real debate than meaningless number throwing.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Way below par sabotaged the club last season ok would have been a big improvement.
