Transfer U-Turn? Boss flies-in to discuss 'maverick' €60m striker deal with Liverpool

In May, Mino Raiola claimed that Mario Balotelli 'will stay' at Liverpool next season, but new reports suggest that the much-maligned Italian 'maverick' is actually on his way out of Anfield.

Speaking to Sky Sports recently, Raiola, confirmed:

"We have talks with Liverpool and he will stay. I spoke many times with the club and they were happy with his input as a professional"

According to Friday's edition of Italian newspaper TuttoSport:

* Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero flew to London to meet to hold Balotelli transfer talks with Liverpool.

* Ferrero has also 'asked' Liverpool about the feasibility of taking Balotelli on loan next season.

Sampdoria's interest in Balotelli is no secret; back in April, Ferrero confirmed that he wanted to bring the €20m signing back to Italy, and noted:

"He [Balotelli] has lost his hunger. He’s earning too much. If he was only on bread and water, he’d be a champion again.”

Well, all I can say is...Good luck with that!

I sincerely doubt that Balotelli will take a significant pay cut to leave Liverpool, especially when he's reportedly on £95k a week. He'd probably choose to rot away on the bench at Anfield than take a lower salary.

After all, the Italian is a football player, which means that - like so many others - he's an mercenary by default. An 'obligate-mercenary' if you will.

That said, the idea of being the biggest fish in a (comparatively) small pond may appeal to Balotelli, who - according to his clearly deluded agent, is worth '€60m-€70m'.

At Liverpool, he has no real status as such, and struggles to even make the team, but at Sampdoria, he'd undoubtedly be the main-man.

Rather surprisingly, Balotelli still retains support amongst the fanbase. I recently conducted a site-poll asking fans how they feel about him staying at the club:

42% of voters wanted Balotelli out, but a majority of 5% seem to be fine with the striker as one of Liverpool's forward options next season.

To be fair, the Italian is the least of Liverpool's problems right now. The media are ridiculously obsessed with his every move, but Balotelli has (for the most part) behaved well at Anfield, and there's always a possibility that he'll come good.

Balotelli has the talent, it just needs to be utilised correctly, and Rodgers singularly failed to that last season. Granted, his goals/assists return this season is pitiful, but if he finally comes good, it'll be a massive boost for Liverpool.

That said, it's probably also true to say that if Balotelli leaves, he will not be missed in the slightest, and if that's the case, why keep him? Just cash-in, and use the money to fund a player who'll fit into the team and make a regular impact.

  1. Haven't found Mario overly offensive during his time with us and don't think he's really had a fair crack of the whip but now we know Brendan is definitely staying, perhaps it would be best for Mario to move on, clearly not favoured by BR and sat on the bench I can't help thinking his idle hands may come over all devilishly disruptive.

  2. Another way to look at Mario's season is: missed sitters. Gave up. Got dropped. Whined. Pretended to be injured. Not very impressive really.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Failed to turn up for training numerous times, was dropped from the squad for same offence.

    ReplyDelete
  4. where is the source for that

  5. raheem, lallana, henderson, coutinho et al missed sitters too.. gave up?? when was that... whined?? when was that?? pretended to be injured what are u having a laugh.... Balotelli did not get a chance to adequaltely proove what he has to offer he was played out of position and not utilized according to his strengths i for one want Balo to stay but doesnt matter if BR is the manager as he will get the same treatment like reina, agger, andy carrol, downing and leiva get from the manager

  6. True, the way my eyes saw it was - a player that tried hard to NOT conform to his stereotype and get on with the job he was given; a job that unfortunately he just didn't have the required tools for, - should he have ever be signed is the more pertinent point for me, I do think it's time for him to move on and find his home somewhere more suited though and will wish him the best of British on his journey.

  7. for me Balotelli could definately work, but we are not helped by having an incompetent an weak mind motivatingless manager like Brendan Rodgers. even with a team like Barcelonas Brendan rodgers will be making excuses.

right now we need to target Yarmolenko(£18M), Marco Reus(£40M), Luciano Vietto.(£14M) and Nathaniel Clyne(£15M)

we need a marquee name with experience, titles and winners mentality and if we can get Reus whilst others teams target players like Benzema, Cavani etc. Reus is proven and is playing Europa league with Dortmund and not for Klopp. if LFC offered £40M now Dortmund will accept and if we give him £150k he'll sign up straight away. he is a WORLD CLASS player at a similar age to when Sanchez moved to Arsenal, and we all saw his impact. 53 goals/45 assists in 122 games for Dortmund and 41 goals/28 assists in `109 games at a young age for Moncheglabach.

problem is when players like Milner get ahead of themselves and think they can take the legendary numbers it makes us an even lesser attraction. im sure if we told Reus he would be our focal point, taking free kicks and penaltys and wearing the number 7 he would join in a flash.

    ----------------------------------------Mingolet
    Clyne--------------------Skrtel----------------Sakho--------------Moreno
    -------------------------Milner--------------------Hendo
    Yarmolenko---------------------Coutinho-------------------Reus
    --------------------------------------Vietto

subs ORigi, Ilori, Ibe, Lallana, Sturridge(if fit), Can, Wisdom

or as Moreno is such a weak link in the team

    ---------------------------------------Mingolet
    --------------------Clyne---------------Skrtel------------Sakho
    -------------------------------------------Can
    -------------------Milner-------------------------------Hendo
    Yarmolenko----------------------Coutinho---------------------Reus
    --------------------------------------Vietto

whilst defending, Can can fall into centre back with Skrtel making a back four. with the ball he will play just in front of the back 3 and behind the midfield trio...which i think could be a position Can dominates. Sakho and Clyne will provide the width, but will have mainly defensive duties and less attacking. and the potent attack of Reus, Vietto and Yarmolenko which is lightnening quick, deadly and fluent could make us as good as Barcelona with Suarez,Messi and Neymar.

Vietto, Reus and Yarmolenko are all LFC players. there LFC type forwards and would make a deadly trio.

still, LFC need a defensive midfielder. theres not many out there and to be honest we should have signed Wanyama from Celtic. he is a young very good holding midfielder and very underrated. with good experience at a young age, and now proven in the prem, along with his Champions league exploits we should go all out for him. Wanyama or Kondogbia. and then Vietto, Reus and Yarmolenko

    ReplyDelete
  8. Are we doomed next season no matter what then?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Few problems, 1)reus wouldn't sign for us and 2) yarmolenko is not even good.

    ReplyDelete
  10. where did u get that from... is there a degree in body language science?? imo nothings wrong with Balo the indivdual with the problem is BR

    ReplyDelete
  11. With the number of families he is feeding, charities he is funding and good deeds he did with his money it sounds unjust to call him Raheem. I mean a mercenary.

    ReplyDelete
  12. exactly individuals forget just how much of a good guy he is but for whatever reason he is lambasted in the English media dare i say it worse than suarez ever was

    ReplyDelete
  13. To be honest he is not doing himself favours, on and off the pitch, but a good guy he is.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I did edit my post to read 'tried hard to Not conform to his stereotype and GOT on with his job'
Realised how I'd worded it before sounded like I thought he'd tried hard to not do his job, when I think quite the opposite - I like Balo and think he has tried hard when given the chance - a lone striker he is not though and I agree Brendan has not utilised him well and also he dropped him as soon as he looked like gaining his rhythm.
The reality appears to be though that BR does not rate him or he doesn't see him fitting his system so for me it's unfair to keep him around with merely hyperbole to look forward to.

    ReplyDelete
  15. what makes you say yarmolenko aint good? he is not yet world class but at LFC hes got a good chance and platform of proving he is world class. hes proven in europe and the international scene.

and why wont Reus sign? doesnt look like hes hot propert and not many teams in for him. if we offer him big wages and promise of game time and trophys why wont he?

Reus would love to play in the Premier league, like many players and if we offered him the oppurtunity plus a good career path(good wage, game time etc) he will join.
i want LFC to lift the Europa league next season and get into the top 4. these current set of players need to learn what it like to win so they can compete at a higher level. if we win the Europa League, we can build for future. and target the title and the champions league....but 1st things 1st we need to build a set of winners who believe in themselves as a unit

    ReplyDelete
  16. i get your point but the speed at which fans have turned on him is infuriating.... when players who have been at the club for longer and still add nothing (allen/borini) still get away with rubbish footballing ability.... so i guess following what some supportes say by extension allen and borini are better than balotelli dare me

    ReplyDelete
  17. I still remember the Spurs game, him and Studge looked like they we're going to hit it off from the get and go and all looked peachy, where did it all go wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  18. oh ok i get u now... and u do have some valid points but how can BR know what his system is when he clearly does not know it himself.. 7 midfielders against stoke?? i'm sorry but i hate how BR has been treating some of our players to fulfill his own agenda (maxi/bellamy/kuyt) and i would have hoped how pascoe and marsh were thrown under the bus so that this.... man.... could keep his job shows u just what kind of man he is... so for now the only season flops imo are allen, lambert, borini and BR... and the mercenary $ter£ing the other players get some lee way for me

    ReplyDelete
  19. i've been asking myself that whole season where did it go wrong we looked so boss in that game.... i think that was either the first or 2nd time he started sturridge with balo and i think in the next game he changed it... tactical genius that man BR

  20. last season if we played

    --------------------------------Mingolet
    Manquillo----------Skrtel----------Sakho------------Enrique
    ---------------------------------Gerrard
    -------------------Hendo-------------------Coutinho
    ---------------------------------Sterling
    ---------------------Balotelli--------------Ibe

we would have finished higher than 6th and balotelli would have scored more. balotelli needed a striker to support him. Ibe can play striker far better than Sterling and is not greedy, as sterling was many times to balotelli. last season when we beat everton 5-0 at home and Arsenal 5-1, Coutinho played from deeper than his usual 10 position and completely ran the show, especially against Everton. Cazorla does the same job at Arsenal and it seems players like that succeed from deeper...NOTE: im not saying coutinho best position is centre mid but Sterling is ineffective and greedy on the wings, and for me, is more effective in a number 10 role where he is forced to be the playmaker and pass the ball.

  21. Before Mario came I wrote a ''read more'' post of why would he fail here. Basically because he won't fit in. And he doesn't fit in anywhere being a child, but a child that really is different to all the other kids. He is an amazing player if you give him the ball and say play, but football is an 11 a side game- in whichever club he played the team looked as 10 plus a loose cannon. That could work too but so many things have to fall in the right place. We had a chance with amazing fans, great captain and Mr. Man mangment, but still we fell short. A pity really...

    ReplyDelete
  22. If Liverpool can sell Balotelli then sell him,his had his chances to prove something and hasn't,so get rid of him.Proven goal scorer is whats needed and he isn't doing that.B.R is also to blame for M.B bad form, but he could of tried harder when given a oppurtunity.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Can't think how to phrase this without a 400 word waffle but, I hate the not knowing side of football, because in principal I've stuck with BR, rightly or wrongly because of the success of the season of second and although many attribute that solely to Suarez I feel the manger is due some credit too.
Obviously the game at the level we're discussing is ridiculous in the extreme what with all the money, corruption (alleged) cheating (alleged) etc. But I still apply the same principles to it as I would any other aspect of life so as I say - I'm sticking with BR...
But then I read of the Marsh and Pascoe news and wonder if they have been left to carry the can so Brendan doesn't have to, OR, have FSG tried to isolate him and thus force his hand of resignation, either way I feel somebody should be incurring my wrath and possibly I should be fully transitioned into the BR out camp, it's just that other moralistic, innocent until proven guilty thing, - like I say the not knowing is a blooming pain.
In your case you suspect the missus of cheating - can't be sure - but have decided that as she's grown fat and ugly anyway she's a gonna, fair enough.

Just a guess but I wonder sometimes if the filter is turned all the way to eleven around pub closing times or when Jamie is trying to get some kip!

    ReplyDelete
  30. i want to say the l word but i cant.... there seems to be some logic with the pub closing time one and if i may add after bad performances or pr blunders

  31. Doubt we'll here the mercenary moniker used here again - think it's now implied by default by the term 'footballer' not sure which league it starts out in, think they're just mildly greedy in league one and slowly chip away at it from there, good to have aspirations in life though.

  32. Cou, Marko, and Kovacic all scored cracking goals recently... If we land Mateo, that would be a sick attack in a few years... If only we could perform NOW ;(

  34. In all fairness would we really miss him? Granted he has buckets of ability but he hasn't shown much of it yet in a Liverpool shirt...It was another case of a square peg in a round hole something that is becoming a regular occurance under Rodgers as so many of his signings have failed to fit in or adapt..Balotelli has so much ability as when he is on form he is almost unstopable but thats a rarity in itself. I would rather get rid and bring in a round peg for a round hole but chances are the money will be spent on another square peg..I would love to be proved wrong if it's for the better of our club and Balotelli becomes the player the world can see in him but I am not holding my breath....If he stays I pray I am proved wrong

  35. I love this apologiser role, - Going into that Tottenham game, I was worried that Studge' perceived 'arrogance/ego' etc may cock things up but I think maybe about 10 mins into the game he showed his willingness to disprove those theories and make things work by pinging in a great ball for Mario to head home - alas it wasn't to be and now the apologising bit -
Small margins - Woy injured Studge and that was it, season over. Brendan could of done better with the remains and the argument for a summer Studgtistute signing is a good one, Brendan's fault though, I'm just not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Honestly though, Milner and Kovacic combined should be able to recreate some semblance of Stevie's impact, so if the rumors about Mateo are true, our main concern should be the attack. If we sell everyone but Studge and bring in J Martinez and Tevez like rumored, I won't even be that salty over Vietto :D

Aside from that, our priorities should be upgrading what we already have. I see Skrtel regressing into the Toure role in the next 2 years, so we'll need to either get L. Jones, Wisdom, Ilori, and/or Coates on the fast track to improvement or start thinking about the future. And the same goes for when we eventually outgrow Allen, Lucas seeks new challenge, and/or Milner regresses. We will probably get 1 from the academy, but we might need some boost for DM if Rossiter follows Coady (looks promising, but no guarantees.

  37. 'HIS' (sorry don't think I can use italic to emphasise with this browser) signings?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am not sure what you mean to be honest? If you want a list of signings that have failed to fit in, adapt or be utilised properly then I'll gladly provide it.....Aspas. Alberto, Markovic, Balotelli, Lallana etc....None of them in all fairness.. I am not saying they couldn't Case but they have not as it stands the only players that have stood out are really Coutinho and Sturridge

    ReplyDelete
  39. Like that a lot- happy new season if that all pans out. As has been mentioned on here before (may have been by yourself, apologies my memory is a bit Swiss cheese), re our finishing position to finances and investment ratio - we have to keep a sense of realism of our position (current) in the pecking order and for me cementing a regular top four spot is the main priority.
Other than that, going forward you can only hope that one or two from the academy make it, which would be one or two more than most other top clubs and then who knows where the likes of Coutinho, Lallana, Ibe (recovery well I hope) and yes, Marko, will take us and/or when the next Torres or Suarez will come along - they do tend to turn up here reasonably often.
The way I see it, at the moment we are in the bus, parked on a cliff trying to work out how to get the gold...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sorry didn't mean to sound pedantic and certainly not angling for a list - totally agree with you that we've taken aboard a lot of flotsam and jetsam recently, I just question who is to blame that's all.
I don't think we really know, it's all just best guesses depending on who's door you're most inclined to lay the blame at.
I bet though that nearly all other fans feel pretty similar, I doubt our strike rate is much worse than others in reality, perhaps not including chelski but then ... meh.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The problem here is the players you mentioned are non-English, apart from Clyne. I don't know if anyone at the management knows the full name of the players you mentioned, let alone their natural positions and abilities. May sound crude, but that's really what I think about the management of LFC since FSG took over the club.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You are absolutely right!

Tactical genius...yeah we have to stick to that genius for at least another season. An 'absolutely sensational' genius that is capable of propelling the club to a previously unexplored heights, something envisioned by FSG, maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My friend, on the basis that Mr Man-Management aka Mr Out-Of-Position is staying for at least one more season, Balo is a goner, so are Borini and Lambert. Now comes the interesting situation, Raheem Sterling was preferred forward/striker over the 3 forwards/strikers I mentioned and now it's almost certain he will never play for us ever again, so I don't know if Markovic, Lallana, Milner, Coutinho or even Can will be installed as the forward/striker role or a genuinely versatile L/R attacking mid/winger/forward/striker will be signed to do the job. I shall cross my finger, close my eyes and wait.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sorry my friend, to be a little more precise, we are 7th in the league in terms of goals scored, 2 less than Southampton and 4 more than Stoke City and Everton.

    ReplyDelete
  45. When I said strike rate, I was referring to our hit vs miss rate re transfer successes if that makes sense, not goals scored which of course we were terrible at because Raheem mercilessly missed many, many, many chances from 3.5ft away from the goal, the little mercenary bless him.

    ReplyDelete
  46. We should ask 'Mr Ferguson?' ;)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Very sorry my friend, I got it terribly wrong regarding the strike rate that you mentioned.

But come to think of it, I don't know if it is correct to say that although we pay big for supposedly decent players but more often than not they turned out mediocre. So, what are the variables and constants here? I'm not insinuating that the present and ex managers is/were completely at fault but there must be a reason to it. Sorry...I'm simply getting overly exasperated by seasons and seasons of underachievement despite heavy investment by FSG.
For young prospect in Raheem Sterling, if he's hellbent on thinking he's ready to conquer world football, all I can say is good luck!

...Has anyone heard that Pako Ayesteran may be joining us again...?

..If he is I would go nuts, bananas...he was the astoundingly good when he was at LFC after he went we went downhill and as far as I'm concerened he would work wonders with BR as manager and him number two....a great coach with tactics and rehearsed plays and also because he don't know BR maybe FSG are thinking there will be more accountability for BR....

...morover, Pako just won the Israeli league...!

    ....would be a great appointment...

...as far as Balloteli...is there really any discussion necessary...? haven't we seen enough already.....?

i'm hoping that this was forced due to the Klopp and Ancelotti sabbaticals we should have gone for Rafa but to be fair when Real Madrid comes calling hardly anyone turns them down.... but BR and FSG need to be careful as the fans will turn on them and quick Stoke 6-1 and sterlings reception against ireland is a glimpse at whats in store when u irritate us passionate fans

  52. I wonder if there are some figures and facts available to compare outlay on players vs. points gained as a result, some on here, <deleted - most on here, know a heck of a lot more than I on general footie and other Clubs affairs, I just know friends who support other Clubs - eww, are also perpetually unhappy with their own signings and only a season or so ago we were the envy of most.
I expect many a fly on the wall would tell us of conversations <deleted - inquisitions, of why other Clubs weren't unearthing the sort of toothy critters we were.
Having said that I've been with you in spirit during the seasons of wilderness, - underachievement not so much IMO, underinvestment compared to the Clubs above us yes, FSG turning it around? - we have to trust in someone so why not ;-)

  56. Again some valid points but borini flopped last season? When did he get his chances? Ballotelli definitely had more.

Interestingly I think these two would have been an interesting solution to have tried.

Borini presses, works hard, gets into the right position and can score goals. He just wasn't given a run of games.

If we'd had a decent athletic defensive midfielder I think we could have played two up top. Problem is we didn't sign one.

Hoping this summer we do. I like Lucas but just not mobile enough to be the complete answer for me.

  57. konoplyanka for free, kondogbia holding mid. I like Can but not sure he's quick enough over first 5 yards for a defensive midfielder

  58. "Just cash in?" Weary of this statement. we will get no return on him. Might as well keep him. Loan maybe to recoup some costs, but balo def has the talent. His problems are clearly mental...

If he was that good, WHY aren't any of the big boys after him ?

When I see the names we're linked to, I immediately look at who else is in for him.

When there isn't anyone, I think the player can't be that good.

Still.... at least we helped out our rivals by taking Milner off their wage bill.

  83. I'm interested to know what formation we're going to play to accomodate Milner, Hendo, Kovacic (?) Coutinho, Sterling (?) and a ST.

    Maybe 4-3-3?

With Hendo, Milner and Kova in midfield and a front 3 of Coutinho, ST and Sterling (?).

I feel Coutinhos best position is behind the striker and so is Sterlings (?)

    ReplyDelete
  84. He won the treble...I don't know why he would return to be an assistant though.

  85. Tony Barrett ‏@TonyBarretTimes 444 minutes ago
Liverpool have agreed personal terms with Danny Ings with the forward set to complete his move from Burnley on July 1.

Ings surely cannot be a starter? Most including myself thought Lambert would have a good season and look what happened.

With Sturridge being a walking injury, hopefully we bring in a prolific striker.

    ReplyDelete
  86. For the amount we paid for Lambert I did not mind having him as a backup, that's all he was ever going to be, plus he had really good seasons with Soton.

With Ings, he is 22, low fee and relatively "low" wages so this is a smart signing as long as we are singing him a back up and as a main.

Then again I cannot see who we can get as our main striker. I got a feeling we won't be signing a striker.

    Who out there is available?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Well if we cannot sign a striker capable of producing 20 goals or more then we are looking at yet another mediocre display up top next season.

I have suggested Higuain who right now has nothing going for him at Napoli. He would be exactly what we need. Flash the cash and see what he says.

    ReplyDelete
  88. We need a ready made player so Higuain, Martintez would be ideal.

Would love us to get Vietto as well, but he is young.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Danny Ings: 37 matches last season all competitions 11 goals.

Raheem Sterling: Not a striker, 47 matches last season all competitions 11 goals.

I would be very bemused if Ings has been signed as first choice.

    ReplyDelete
  90. whatever happens, liverpool can rebuild properly now that stevie has moved on

    ReplyDelete
  91. Wow the kid played a lot of matches actually. Then again the money is asking for that's the least I expect.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Why I am not going to get excited about Ings.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'm not too. We just have to see, most people we're not excited about Sturridge either and he done well enough. We'll just have to wait and see.

    ReplyDelete
  94. We cannot wait and see with Ings. If the club fails to get a top quality striker then we are screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  95. As a back up I don't mind Ings (Lambert replacement) but we certainly need a main striker with experience.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Sorry, I respectfully disagree. Most fans knew that Sturridge had the pedigree. It was his attitude that was called into question. Ings has no track record whatsoever. No outstanding quality apart from being English. Sturridge would came from top teams, Ings came from a newly promoted team and did ok. IMO to compare the two is downgrading Sturridge's abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Why haven't we given Borini a chance if lfc are investing in Ings?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Relating back to the article... it has been a poor season for Mario. I think a few factors need to be considered:

    - Poor form
    - Lack of effort ( not all the time, but on occasions)
    - Played in the wrong position
    - Lack of service
    - Playing him up front by himself
    - Injuries
    - Team in general playing poorly

I honestly think this was a "committee" signing as not BR, of course I have no proof of this.

I was carefully optimistic and fantasized about Balo coming in and doing amazingly well.

I think that unless we play to his strengths we won't get the best out of him.

Selling him would be good for us and for him, but we will be making a loss.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I can see your point Funk. It's true. I guess I'm just trying to be optimistic.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Another poor signing from BR...Borini should have gone to Sunderland last season, but kudos to him for trying. Respect.

    ReplyDelete
  101. And so unexpected from someone who has been a model professional throughout his career.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I can't see Ings being any better than Borini. Surely our scouting could have been more imaginative.

    ReplyDelete
  103. How dare you. How very dare you... You should know better

    ReplyDelete
  104. I believe so too. We need a DoF, an experience one. I don't trust BR anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  105. PS what you think of the Milner signing?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Milner is experienced and hardworking but on his own isn't enough. At least it's a step in the right direction.

    ReplyDelete
  107. £150K weekly though...jeez

    ReplyDelete
  108. I think Lallana was actually the biggest disappointment last season, (we can now put last season in the 'last season' bracket and forget it, thank god), Markovic and Balotelli were not given enough opportunity to play to their strengths.

Lallana, when fit, had that chance and didn't shine, he must improve next year.

    ReplyDelete
  109. All these players we signed were below Coutinho's level. We need players at his level and better.

Lallana was truly disappointing. We just need to have a good pre-season and a goof start to the season.

    ReplyDelete
  110. f the two clubs cannot agree on a fee for Ings then the price will be set by a tribunal as the player is under the age of 24.

Burnley said: "We have rejected an offer made by Liverpool, but will continue to have dialogue with the club in order to reach a resolution over the fee."

So how much is Ings going to cost us then? He is British so after all. Agree with Funkdoc, not going to be any different to what Borini offers.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I felt PC's level dropped to. With no runners creating passing options and space he tended to hang on to the ball too long.

I think this is a generic problem within the team generally, not enough movement and too many touches slowed our game down to the point where creating goal scoring opportunities became impossible against a 10 man defence.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Well Totte offered £12M and they take that into account. I think it should be no less than £6M hopefully.

Borini needs to go for his own sake, awful signing by BR, but I respect him for staying.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Coutinho does this every season, he has a few good games then his levels drop. He is just not consistent enough.

I would love us to sign Firmino though.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Don't know why but I got a feeling we may go for someone like Hernandez

    ReplyDelete
  115. I just think he is banging his head against a brick wall, he must be thinking 'ok i've got the ball who is showing for me'. Also BR told him to score more so half the time he misses the pass that is on and tries to soot. Ok it worked on a couple of occasion but he must learn to pick the right option at the right time.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I had that exact feeling..................shivers

    ReplyDelete
  117. Agreed. Sterling is another one, he played some poor games this season too.

Man I hope we make some good signings, I'm not expecting the so called "marquee" signings but at least some good players with pedigree.

    ReplyDelete
  118. What rubbish. He was played as a forward consistently. That's his position. His job is to score goals. He couldn't.

He whined with some social media nonsense about people who don't believe in him

Then he went home and stayed there, claiming to be "ill" or whatever. He's a terrible professional, has been all his career. Sooner he's gone the better, and he should never have been allowed near Liverpool in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Lacazette seems on his way to PSG...

    ReplyDelete
  120. I agree with that basically, but I think he didn't try for very long. There was a period when he looked like he was listening, trying to respond to what he was being asked to do. But he couldn't keep it going.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I have a real belief in Markovic, I think he has the game awareness the two mentioned are lacking some times.

    ReplyDelete
  122. £22m seems like a bargain to me! Lallana was £25m and Lovren was £20m.......................

    ReplyDelete
  123. He's a weird one to me, he did not impress me enough at Benfica or Partizan to warrant such hype but the potential is there.

Playing him as a RWB does not help, he needs to play on the wings and actually shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Is that how much he is going for?

Man Lyon have done so well, their team is full of talent, mostly from the academy.

    ReplyDelete
  125. That's what I mean about letting them play to their strengths, I would like to see him as part of a front three if we play 433.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I think the explanation isn't so much tactics and coaching as the shock of the Champions League. The squad and the club couldn't adjust their rhythm to play two games a week. Even established players like Henderson -- who's still young -- never mind the less experienced ones like Sterling, Can, Coutinho, Mignolet, Moreno and so on -- had never had to do that before. That pressure on a squad that's still quite thin in certain areas was exacerbated by the injury problems and so our season fell apart.

    ReplyDelete
  127. That's interesting...never really thought of that.

    ReplyDelete
  128. You are forgetting that Sturridge's reputation as an upcoming talent was earned not mainly by his youth performances for City and for England age-group teams, let alone for Chelsea, but his performances for Bolton Wanderers.

Ings is of a comparable quality in many respects. He's an excellent prospect with a very dynamic and technically excellent game. I'd be surprised if he wasn't a significant success for Liverpool. Compare him to Kuyt rather than Suarez or Sturridge and it starts to make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I miss Kuyt...and Maxi.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Players like Kuyt are gold dust aren't they, the kind of guys you don't build a team around, but you can build a squad upon. If Ings can replicate Kuyt's workrate and commitment, his consistency and presence, we'll be doing well. Not every player has to have magic in their boots to make a winning team... though as I say, I think Ings might surprise a few people -- he can play a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Kuyt as just reliable. Never complained and always gave his best. He's a player every team needs have, like the Fletcher, Milner etc... reliable players that are not world class but complement the team well, like Danny Murphy as well.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Ings and Milner are now on board I don't think they'll do badly or area baad players but it still rings out 'NO AMBITION' I am hoping we really go for it this transfer season and bring in higher calibre players with proven ability instead of prospects, who exactly is open to debate as we all have our own views on that one and before some smartarse jumps in with comments about the big players wont come to LFC we are not talking the Messi's and Ronaldo's of footbal I would just like to see a bit more ambition in who we bring in to the club this time around as to many players have been bought on the idea they will become quality and all the time waiting could prove damaging to the club we need proven quality for the new season and more ambition....In an ideal situation I would at least try for Higuian, Jackson Martinez, Yarmolenko, Aubamayang, Vietto, Bacca or Tevez as the forward needed. We need a warrior in midfield the likes of Kondogbia, Kramer, M'Villa, Ozan Tufan area all good legitimate targets if pursued. I could go on forever what in my opinion is needed GK, RB, LB, DM, ST, RW, LW all of these positions are open to debate...We have to be realistic but whats the harm in trying?

    YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  133. The same reason I'm not ability counts for nothing until proven, if a proven quality player comes in to level things out a little then maybe Ings will be a good signing in the future but him alone is not going to be enough to push us into the top four

    ReplyDelete
  134. Danny Murphy! Letting him go was a stupid mistake. Very Liverpool... sigh!

    ReplyDelete
  135. The thing with Borini is that he runs, fine, but he just runs to the wrong place!

He was a good prospect at one time, vicious shot on him, which is probably more helpful to a striker than just an ability to run around -- and I was interested when we signed him -- but he started just playing for himself whenever he got in the spotlight, running about in order to impress agents and sponsors with the name Borini, rather than to win games for Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I agree, also letting go of Henchoz as well.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Not putting Murphy into this category, though I enjoyed watching him at the time, especially some crackers vs United - but Liverpool have always let their best ever players go. Just think back to Fowler and Owen with 150+ goals each and they leave for relatively nothing when you compare talent and other transfers.

We just let everyone go :(

    ReplyDelete
  138. Personally I don't think Balotelli has what it takes mentally but at the end of the day there is no point in dropping millions of pounds on him after one season. We needed a big squad according to Rodgers, so let's keep a big squad. Let's worry about getting rid of the dross he signed the previous summer first. Like Aspas, Luis Alberto etc. Lallana, Lovren, Markovic and Balotelli were all huge mistakes but they're here now so we might as well give them another season to prove everyone wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Letting Fowler go was a bad decision, also we should have offered Owen another contract long time before.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I suspect Balo will be shipped out on a loan deal. The difficulty is that after this season, he only has 12 months on his contract, but I can't see many bids coming in. It's a collective fail though, as there aren't many things as frustrating as Rodgers outright refusing to play strikers.

    ReplyDelete
  141. There aren't a lot of good strikers around in Europe at the moment, are there. Luuk de Jong at PSV is interesting but would cost a lot for what he is. A lot of the better goalscorers in the big leagues are senior players who are well-established at their clubs and there's either no chance in getting them, or no point in going after them because it's very unlikely they'd be able to reproduce their form elsewhere.

So you have to look for promise. Seems to me that in Ings and Origi we have a couple of decent players coming in. If Sinclair can establish himself -- looks like he could use a loan to me though -- and Sturridge can contribute later in the season, we have a decent strike force there, but we are going to need goalscorers from midfield to support them. It's probably easier to add that to the squad, too -- lots of good younger midfielders around who could make an impact.

    ReplyDelete
  142. How can you call Lallana a huge mistake? Please, I need someone to explain this for me. He's looked quality whenever I've seen him play.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Doesn't it make you think that there might be more to the situation than you can see? Coaches don't usually exile players from the first team without good reason. It'll all come out eventually, I expect -- but not until Balotelli is safely out of the door.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Nicolas Chamberlain1:15 pm, June 08, 2015

Nobody can explain that they just repeating each other. Almost every signing flopped so Lallana is also a massive flop.

    ReplyDelete
  145. It does seem that quite a few people can only cope with one simple narrative... But Eric's a smart poster (hope he doesn't mind me saying that) so maybe there'll be more of an answer than just his transfer fee and his goals scored column.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I agree with you that he tried to get on with his job. But to me Mario is just a symptom of BR's poor placement/lay out of his team and it appears that while some of us theink BR learnt his lesson and is not going to keep doing it (playing wingers in defense, wingers as strikers, asking people to "adapt" , lone striker etc) this season, it appears there are many people on this forum who do not think there is anything wrong with BR and that he was setting up the team very well last season and that the appalling performances last season were due to the losses of Suarez and Sturridge and of course...Balo "missing sitters..giving up"

    ReplyDelete
  147. Because he has no pace, very lightweight , only way he can find consistency is by starting every game, does'nt score or create that much , had 1 good season of premier league football & we paid 26m for a player with probably 2 years of his prime left.

Maybe not a huge mistake, but a mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Why not get on the lookout for new owners now we are in a stable financial position? Thanks FSG for not putting us into administration, but now we need to move on and up and the only way we are going to be able to do this is with major investment in the playing squad and a change of direction when it comes to buying players.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Please don't tell me that Danny Ings isn't filling your head up with exciting thoughts for next season?? :)

    ReplyDelete
  150. We are all better than Allen

    ReplyDelete
  151. If we were in a 'staring out':competition fine! But he's lazy, doesn't give a shit, over paid! Understatement of the year! Get rid. He's Shite!Shite!Shite!!

    ReplyDelete
  152. I don't really see that -- "no pace" or "very lightweight". I mean, "no pace", that's someone like Gerrard.... "Lightweight" is someone like Coutinho. Lallana doesn't get knocked off the ball easily, and I've seen him bursting past players often enough. Pace and strength aren't his particular assets, but he's not so weak there that it makes him a poor player.

I agree he should have scored more but he did OK. I'd also balance that out by pointing at the number of positions and roles he performed, his contribution to team performances and to the squad.

I think you're right that he needs to be a starter to be consistent, he's a rhythm player. I don't see that as a particular weakness at the moment.

His age and experience and his price tag are related obviously, but £25m isn't even all that much these days for a first team player anyway. I agree it might have been a lower fee. £15-£18m would have been arguably more appropriate but it is what it is.

Not convinced over all that lacking express pace and hench is enough to make a creative forward a bad player though.

    ReplyDelete
  153. He lost confidence and doesn't have the character to come back from that. I can be somewhat the same to be honest. So I identify with Mario, which is partly why I'm harsh on him -- I wouldn't want someone like me leading the attack for Liverpool!

    ReplyDelete
  154. Well, I actually have a funny feeling about Danny Ings. The force is strong with this one.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Yes, he has special quality, very excited for him to join us.

    He's not

    ReplyDelete
  157. That's how I remember it, too.

    ReplyDelete
  158. May the force be with us this season .....

    ReplyDelete
  159. The force was strong with Lambert too. Played like a demon at Southampton.

Do not hold your breath re Ings. Playing for Burnley vs LFC? Good luck to him though.

We will have to wait and see who is signed to score for us on a regular basis, that is if a player like that will be signed...

    ReplyDelete
  160. Rumour has it that Inter are interested in taking Borini off our hands. Surely there's scope there for a nifty swap deal to get this Kovacic transfer over the line.

I realise some may not be overwhelmed by the prospect of Ings and Milner coming in, but with those two already secured, if we can also bring in Kovacic while simultaneously packing off Borini, that represents some decent early business, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  161. No, I never felt the force with Lambert.

    ReplyDelete
  162. He was very good at Southampton though. Lovren and Lallana too...

    ReplyDelete
  163. The pace, strength & price tag arguments are subjective.

One point though, do you think Rafa, or any manger with a euro wide reputation & contacts wouldn't have attracted a better player for that money.

"he's a rhythm player. I don't see that as a particular weakness at the moment"

Disagree, that's fine for defensive minded players but if your one of he 3-4 players who primary focus is to create & score, it's a massive drawback not being able to influence games from the bench.

    ReplyDelete
  164. He is too old. Yes...too old to begin the training.

    ReplyDelete
  165. No but I felt the farce

    ReplyDelete
  166. I actually like Inge if nothing else he has nuisance value as a forward and wins more in the air than he should

    ReplyDelete
  167. Pace and strength are objective. Let's watch 10 of Lallana's performances and see how he performs in terms of strength and pace.

The price tag has objective elements, it can be measured against the value of other transfers to some degree.

Not a problem *at the moment* because he starts when he's fit. I wouldn't say it's a *massive* drawback either. Just a slight one. I'm not arguing he's perfect. Just don't think he was a bad signing at all. Because when you balance these slight weaknesses or problems with him against what he brings to the side it just seems that the positives are much more important.

    ReplyDelete
  168. If Mr glass is injured and sterling leaves and we sign no one else I'd lime to see Liverpool start as a 442 with ing and balo up front..... Don't laugh just indulge me

    ReplyDelete
  169. I'm having trouble using a tablet { read thick )

    ReplyDelete
  170. The way its now..Liverpool seems happy to play catching up with the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd or Man city..Brendan Rodgers do not have a championship mentality..he is always on the lookout for 2nd rate star player rather than sure finished product. This way Liverpool will never be a great team again..he should fight few world class players..may be benzema..chicarito..tevez..or atleat demba ba..edin zeko..manzukich...rather than hoping the 2 rate star to become another Suarez..

    ReplyDelete
  171. I like lallana but Rodgers paid a lot of dosh for a player with no real role in the team hopefully when sterling leaves the shackles will be off

    ReplyDelete
  172. Yup Coutinho needs somebody on his level if Liverpool is to truly benefit from his skill. A lot of his strength is based on his imagination in terms of combinations and movement, so this is where Lallana and Markovic should come in. Unfortunately neither of them were in the team for any great length of time last season.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Game awareness - spot on. I get the same impression of him. That and a penchant for the spectacular.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Luiz Adriano could be available too, potential steal since he's coming from Ukraine.

J Martinez should really be our #1 priority. He'll cost less than 30M, he's in his prime, and he'll guarantee goals. Not a lot of top clubs (Real, Barca, PSG) are looking for strikers, so really our main competition is Arsenal, which is stiff, but with Sanchez, Giroud, and Welbeck already there, and Sanogo developing, they might not be willing to offer him much. We have just sturridge, Ings, and Origi...

    ReplyDelete
  175. Maybe by that time Rodgers will be kicked out the door, too.

That's Balotelly, but what about Borini? I know he lacks overall quality, but the guy scored a goal when he started 1 match vs Villa and was never, ever, seen again. Borini's a non-stop worker, can't imagine much trouble 'behind the scenes', only Rodgers overlooking his strikers till it was too late. Sterling, Coutinho, Lallana as false nine all better at striker...than a striker? Nope.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Well inter want Lucas and Yaya, which would be funded by this deal. That's why they may want to sell, but Mancini still wants him but if he wants to move, then he will let him. Has much potential, good signing

    ReplyDelete
  177. Tablets make me sick.

    ReplyDelete
  178. ..packing off Borini, Lambert, Lovren and BR's fave- Allen would represent good transfer business

    ReplyDelete
  179. Sterling is gone so take him our of the equation, i would imagine something like:

    ----------------------Mingolet----------------------
    New RB----Skrtle -------Sakho-------Moreno
    ----------------------Can----------------------------
    Henderson-------Kovacic------------Milner
    -------------------Coutinho----------------------
    ---------------Sturridge--------------------------

    ReplyDelete
  180. Hehe. Allen has his skills, but it's he hasn't been the dominant metronome we wanted, for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Yes it was him who sold Meireles to chelsea, but that was really a daft move at the time. However, I cant seem to find an explanation for how he faded almost immediately thereafter

    ReplyDelete
  182. Exactly. Milner and Ings on their own = no inspiration. Milner?Ings plus Kovacic, Naingollan and Tevez/Vietto- Now were starting to talk. add Clyne/Trippier, maybe even another LB like Kolorov, get Sturridge fit before throwing him in- possible if we have a decent back up like Ings- and we should be good to go to try for top 4 next season.
If they turn out to be the headline signings, I shudder to think...

    ReplyDelete
  183. I agree: he's the best we've got.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Meireles was voted a player of the year by LFC supporters for the only season he played for us. And he deserved it. Maybe he was suited for LFC style and he's not the first or last who faded in Chelsea. But still he played more games then Torres in the season when they won the CL.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Obviously i'm not hoping for anymore strikers coming in other than recalling origi from Lille. Rodgers seems to be getting worse every passing season than learning his past mistakes...the's not much different between ings, borini, aspas and Alberto when they were signed, that said, I'd keep borini or Balotelli than this pointless move. It really shows a total lack of ambition

    ReplyDelete
  186. And losing the big wage earners- Gerrard, 180k Johnson, 120k Balo 95k gives us nearly £400k pw wages to tempt a couple of big name ST and DM.

    For example: Nainggolan/Kondogbia and Tevez:

    RB: Clyne Wisdom Flanagan

CB: Skrtyl Toure Sakho Lovren Illori

    LB: Kolorov Moreno Enrique

    DM: Lucas Nainggolan/Kondogbia

    CM: Milner Hendo Can

AM: Lallana Coutinho Kovacic Markovic Ibe Sterling
    ST: Sturridge Tevez Ings Origi
All possible. Not a bad squad...

    ReplyDelete
  187. Sturridge had pedigree from the start, how often do you see young English strikers on the books of TWO top English teams. Mancini was on record in stating that Hughes made a monumental mistake in sactioning the sale of Sturridge. Sturridge before he came to us was joint top scorer with Lampard at Chelsea despite coming off the bench. Yes his Bolton form helped, but do you think Chelsea in hindsight were happy about his sale? Abramovic had a £50 mill project in Torres which fortunately for LFC blinded them to Sturridge's ability.

As for your comparison to Kuyt, although more palatable is still an insult. Kuyt although less gifted wad an established international. Ings has merely shown he's ok and that's it. Ings along with the rest have the responsibility to take us up the table.

borini is a horrible footballer meant for a mid table team.... theres a reason why he can barely get into the international team... also i'm upset that Borini wanted to stay when we got a very good bid from sunderland for a waste of a striker something we will not get again this season

  192. Luuk de Jong failed miserably in the Prem. We're better off with Ings if he's to be targeted.
