Great News? Carra claims 'fantastic' Prem attacker 'will' replace €18m Liverpool misfit

On Monday, Liverpool officially confirmed the signing of £12m-rated Burnley striker Danny Ings, but who will the 22-year old goalscorer replace in LFC's squad?

Writing on Kicca, Anfield legend Jamie Carragher mused:

"Ings will take the role of Borini in the [Liverpool] squad and will provide more than he has"

Carra also argued that 'fantastic' Ings will probably have to make do with limited game time during the first few months of his Liverpool career:

"[Ings' game time] will probably come in the Europa league and Capital one cup to start with; then, it will be up to him to show if he deserves to start more"

Borini - is a bona-fide transfer flop, and any striker with a modicum of talent is an upgrade on the Italian. However, as Liverpool discovered last summer, getting him out of the club is easier said that done.

In July 2014, Borini's agent, Marco De Marchi confirmed that Sunderland's put in an offer for Borini:

"Sunderland has made an important offer of 18 million Euros, but Fabio wants to stay there [at Anfield]"

Gustavo Poyet - who described the 22-year old as 'perfect' for Sunderland - then confirmed that Sunderland were interested:

"I would love to [sign Borini]. We agreed a price with Liverpool and we flew to America [for Liverpool's pre-season tour] and he didn't come".

To be honest, Borini's reluctance to leave last summer is perfectly understandable.

With the greatest respect, Sunderland is a massive step-down from Liverpool, and with the carrot of Champions League football at Anfield, the Italian obviously didn't want to miss out.

Borini's current deal expires in 2017, so there's nothing stopping him from running down his contract, and then leaving for a free in two years. In the meantime, he'll collect a fat salary whilst sitting on the sidelines twiddling his thumbs.

Perhaps Borini - in his infinite delusion - genuinely believes he'll get an extended run in the team, but realistically, he must surely know that his Anfield career ended long ago, and that he'll never be more than a benchwarmer at the club.

At his age, playing regularly is the most important thing, and if he refuses to leave again this summer - even for a lesser team - then it proves (to me) that he's just another mercenary happy to sit back and watch the cash roll in.

On a related note: why on earth did Liverpool give Borini a 5-year deal back in 2012? Deals of that length should be reserved for experienced players who are likely to have a major impact on the team, not comparatively untested young players who've achieved nothing in the game.

If Borini had been given him a 3-year deal, his contract would be up now, and the club could easily get rid of him. Instead, the Reds face the prospect of yet another player draining the club's resources whilst contributing absolutely nothing.

  1. If we had given him a shorter contract he would be on a free by now. At least this way we have a chance to get something back.

You would not expect a young ambitious footballer to want to sit sit on the bench just for he money. I think he will go but he knows that every month that passes only improves his hand in negotiating an advantageous exit for himself .

  2. Good on you B.R one of your best signings to date.

  3. The depressing truth!

  4. So what we know at this point.

Milner to join subject to medical. Ings to join subject to agreeing a fee with Burnley and medical. Both these have been confirmed by the official website.

Pascoe and Marsh gone, strange that it has not yet been confirmed by the official website? FSG or LFC coming out and directly backing Rodgers = none, why not when the coaching staff have been axed? New coaching staff = none.

    = Mickey Mouse Club.

  5. Have to agree, it's pretty poor form the owners that they STILL haven't come out and publicly backed Rodgers. Nor has there been any explanation regarding the axing of 2 key members of his backroom staff. Doesn't make much sense... I sense something, a presence I haven't felt since,,,

  6. Hey Jaimie I made a valid comment on the article ---"Done Deal: Liverpool sign 'wonderful' £26m playmaker who'll earn obscene salary of £150k-a-week | Liverpool-Kop.com" --- but my comment was removed when I said nothing that went against the comment policy.

This is what the comment said: I see whee you are coming from from a statistical point of view but there may be some element of truth to his argument, albeit a small one. Once the deal had been announced there were Man City fans who were moaning about what a big loss he will be and how he brings so much to the team; its looks to me like he is a very appreciated and underrated player from City.
Even though he was a bit part player at City, they were still willing to offer him £165,000 per week and he STILL turns them down, so at least he is not a "Mercenary" who jumps at money the first chance he gets(I know 150k a week is a lot but that hasn't been confirmed as I've seen reports of him being paid 100k per week), he wants first team football and he has the passion and desire to move clubs to get it.
And he also provides experience in a relatively inexperienced squad so we need that burning desire to win. We have seen too many times our team being behind in a match, giving up and not looking like they'll get back in the game; Milner will provide that experience to grab the youngsters and the game by the scruff of the neck and make a comeback.

????? What's wrong with that and why was it removed?????

  7. So we're signing an average player to replace another average player?

    Well played Brendan.

  9. We'll probably replace them with more inexperienced like Inglethorpe...

  10. Today I'm feeling negative.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Right, so why did we not rather decide to give Jerome Sinclair a shot instead of signing Ings and use that money towards a quality striker?

Just go look at Knight's post on what we have spent at teams who finish below us. Enough is enough.
    Sinclair

  12. To be fair, Ings has a much better record of scoring goals than Borini ever had. Ings waaay more clinical and as a back up striker he isn't the worst option to have, especially as he is 'free'.

    ReplyDelete
  13. As much as I would love to have Klopp come in, I really don't see it at the moment. I guess we'll just have to wait and see though.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Because apparently being mediocre during 1 season make you a proven PL player (according to some people), more seriously it looks like the markovic/ibe situation all over again, bringing a player for the sake of it while we have youngsters to use instead in the same position.

    ReplyDelete
  15. To be fair, Borini scored 7 in 32 matches at Sunderland two seasons ago and was mostly played on the wing if memory serves me correct. That is a goal every 4.6 games.

Ings scored a goal every 3.18 games for Burnely last season as a preferred striker.

This is very good comparison of two teams who have struggled. In all competitions Borini has played a total of 1611 minutes of football since joining the club. That is all. If anything, we are getting rid of one player who is not good enough and replacing him with Ings and hoping he will do better?

There is absolutely no sense behind the way LFC do business in the transfer market and is the reason why so bucket loads of money is and will still be pissed down the drain.

  18. And the truth shall set us free mate! The irony of it is it could have been spent far better

    ReplyDelete
  19. If FSG and Rodgers trully want to take the club further they need to start showing more ambition and a lot more direction and purpose in the transfer market, so many missed oportunities in the market and so much deadwood, now 3 years later the £210m+ spent it's hard to find that many positives within the plethora of players Rodgers has signed. With the exception of Sturridge and Coutinho there have been no geniune standout players, many of the players signed are now deemed surplus to requirements. Look at the players Rodgers has signed permanently or on loan...Borini, Allen, Assiadi, Sahin, Yesil, Sturridge, Coutinho, Mignolet, Ibe, Sakho, Lovren, Moreno, Toure, Milner, Ings, Markovic, Llori, Moses, Cissokho, Manquillo, Can, Lallana, Lambert, Origi, Balotelli and he's not finished yet! Don't get me wrong Sturridge and Coutinho have been very good and a few of the others are not bad players and might come good but in all honesty it's like Rodgers and FSG are just throwing a handful of darts at a dartboard and hoping one hits the bullseye.....

    ReplyDelete
  20. Because Rodgers is not what he is billed out to be... He claims to be a promoter of youth and yet stockpiles talent almost as much as Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So West Ham appoint Bilic. Reckon that is going to be a major upgrade from fat Sam. Has loads of experience managing at International level too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Clearly the Streling saga ,will show Liverpool that developing youth is a waste of time and rather buy the final product !

    ReplyDelete
  23. If there is any truth to the rumour he may take Lovren off our hands yippee.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yep hopefully not too big but will be glad to see him go.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I doubt FSG are interested in making any more major losses otherwise the likes of Balo would have been gone by now.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why give up on players after 1season ?

    ReplyDelete
  30. If we are going to have to take a hit of £10m on Lovren then I doubt he will be leaving right now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well i was thinkin maybe 5 million he really should have done better and i really dont think he is going to make it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Maybe he needs a different partner other than Skrtel? Lovren has been rubbish but featured alongside Sakho in the Spurs game and we kept Spurs quiet.

Really do not see him leaving.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lovern has the best EPL def .stats this last season ?

    ReplyDelete
  34. You are probably right but he really needs to improve a lot on his efforts.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes thats right stats lie hey.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well if anyone thinks those stats make him one of the seasons best defenders they are gravely mistaken.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Winding you up ,Cheers I off !

    ReplyDelete
  38. We are not going to get £15m for Lovren. Not even in your wildest dreams.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Most likely but heres hoping.

    ReplyDelete
  40. It really does not help when you buy from clubs below you who hold you ransom to their 'best players'. If we had to sell Lallana now we would be lucky to get £10m.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I reckon Lallana will improve next season he had a bad run with injury and did show some good signs but i agree we paid way too much for him.

    ReplyDelete
  42. So Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea and City are to be labeled the same, after all, they too, have bought players from these teams over the last 5 years and more.... Or do we reserve midtabletalent tag for FC because we are the leagues biggest whiners.....

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's official, LFC are changing sport to better represent it's fans, we are now to become an official whining club....."Clearly we are to be considered world leaders, so silver ware is expected to follow very shortly, thanks for your on going support.... " as seen on the official YNAWYW (your never alone when you whine) website.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You'd hope he had more about him than that, but with his agent claimimg he wants to go to a top european club(don't we all) it would appear he doesn't hold realistic expectations...Hopefully, he doesn't end up staying and ruining his own career....

    ReplyDelete
  45.  Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea and City are to be labeled the same, after all, they too, have bought players from these teams over the last 5 years and more....

Like who and how much have they spent at these clubs?

Lfc's scouting has been substandard, unimaginative & infuriatingly lazy. The truth hurts, our position is a reflection on our transfer activities.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Another thought, Rodgers stays, gets new backroom staff and then by Christmas the wheels had come off again and he is sacked. The new coaching staff selected now will have to go too as a new manager is going to bring in his own people.

Would Pako put himself in a position where he could only have a job for half a season or based on whether he can help Rodgers succeed and that goes for any other new coaches we employ? It simply is too far fetched for me.

I think it is time for FSG/LFC to at least confirm the sackings of Pascoe and Marsh. Something fishy going on behind the scenes.

  64. Even though he was patchy, he instantly became a fan favourite because of the things he did. There was so much more promise in him than Lallana or Makrovic who we spent similar amounts on. I remember one game in his first season where he twisted like 5 defenders in a row. His penchant for the unthinkable was great.

    ReplyDelete
  65. We made a loss on Carroll to WHU but still gt decent money for him.

    ReplyDelete
  66. ON THIS TRANSFER DAY: In 1987, Liverpool signed John Barnes from Watford for £900,000. Football stats.

We could use one of him today or two.One of the all time lfc greats.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ings is 4 years older than Sinclair, has 4 complete seasons of top level football under his belt and is an England Under-21 international. I really don't see how one can compare them.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Plus had to pay Carroll a loyalty bonus. The same will go for Lovren if we had to sell him. Unfortunately LFC were the biggest losers buying and selling Carroll.

    ReplyDelete
  70. What did you do then?

  73. Actually, I think you are not afraid that "nothing is set in stone".

    ReplyDelete
  85. Perhaps because he doesn't want to be a coach? Being good at something doesn't make a person good at teaching/coaching it...

    ReplyDelete
  86. You don't have to like BR. But you shouldn't be wishing he does bad. Criticise what he's already done, but hope he improves for the future.

  92. I believe last season we spent around 117M and brought in 78.62M. I'll leave my source in a separate comment since the link will go into moderation.

There's one big thing to keep in mind though. Every transfer isn't just a money transaction. It's money for a player's services, which I guess is fairly obvious. But here's the thing. Last season we let go a big talent without replacing it. We have a net around 38M spent, so theoretically, we should have brought in 38M worth of talent net. But obviously, that didn't happen. I could care less about the net spent money. For me, the bigger issue is whether or not the net money = net quality. If we're spending money but losing talent, something's wrong. If we're profiting, but gaining talent (ideal situation), then that's obviously a good thing.

New brooms sweep clean and we owe it to anyone coming in to the club to get behind them to get off to a good start . We all feel let down by BR and players who have found the shirt too big for them but I am positive change for the better is on it's way .

  97. Big Twitter rumour. Apparently everywhere, but no media outlet running the story after 24 hours. Nicola Cortese and Monchi are in the running to replace him and add a job. Not sure of any truth though.

    ReplyDelete
  98. While our business hasn't been great you can point to quite a few players at clubs above us in the league that came from.midtable clubs. Cahill, Rooney, Barry was at City long enough and was a regular, Bony would have been better than any of our forwards. I could go on. Then talk about the players that got us our history! Plenty of British talent from midtable clubs.
It doesn't matter where you get the players from just how good the players are. It's stupid to assume one correlates to the other.

  104. We can blame BR but intelligent players make up for bad decisions. A team can't have two outstanding goalkeepers hence rotation has to be implemented, as a result both will struggle for form. Only a finished product leading the attack is missing and plan B whenever opposition resort to stifling Couthinho, that's when Kovacic is very essential we will be unstoppable.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Nothing to do with false hope.

Coaching staff sacked and FSG, LFC or Rodgers have said bugger all on why it has happened.

Stevie 'surprised' that Pascoe and Marsh have been sacked and would like to hear BR explain himself in a press conference :-o?

If Rodgers stays then he stays but the fact that nothing is coming from the horses mouth leaves everything up in the air.

Quite liked this one from Barrett. Not for one moment saying it will happen but Tony has his ways...

  106. Given Suso a chance who could not have delivered any worse than what Lallana did last season?

Not Suso's biggest fan but maybe if given a decent chance he would have proven to be better than overpaying on a player who was either injured or hardly contributed.

    ReplyDelete
  107. For all your conjecture about how there is a lack of support, I can find just as much showing support.

It's all a guess at this point, however I choose to believe based upon the fact that we're already in mid-June, have already signed two players, and that we're supposedly (I use that word lightly because it doesn't mean that much ultimately) talking to replacements for the Pascoe and Marsh.

What's lost in the all the conjecture is the fact that the owners don't have to say anything if they so wish.

BR should be fined 2 weeks wages for his handling of Borini alone. BR has been nothing short of a disgrace with the young man. First he plays Borini LEFT WING and then when he is unable to play there discards £10million worth of signing like a pair of Mike Ashley tracksuit bottoms without the slightest hint of embarrassment. BR is like a kid in a sweet shop who has absolutely no idea which hole to insert them into.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Theycallmemrburt7:46 pm, June 09, 2015

BR was like a father figure to Borini having had him with the Chelsea youth team and then Swansea on loan. That father figure turned out to be the type of bloke who also discards his number two to save his own neck. the bloke is a serial scapegoater, Borini had no chance.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Theycallmemrburt7:49 pm, June 09, 2015

I kinda hope FSG are giving it two weeks to see if a manager of choice becomes available.

    ReplyDelete
  113. That's daft, Lallana was good for us, way ahead of anything Suso could or ever would accomplish. Lallana is an excellent player.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Yeah that'd be a good team. Messi and... who exactly. Be like one of those UAE teams that exist to entertain the Sheik's kids. Good luck with that.

    ReplyDelete
  115. The player turned out to be not up to it. It happens. Do you get this cross and entitled every time something doesn't work out your way? One of those people who demands the manager is sacked when the checkout girl fluffs your shopping at Tesco? What you say here is just... it's so unrealistic! You're just making stuff up to upset yourself. I don't understand why.

    ReplyDelete
  116. The borini signing sums up the Rodgers tenure, overpayed under played under performing player.

    ReplyDelete
  117. You mean the Transfer Committee of which Rodgers is a part of?

Yes, that transfer committee is responsible for signings.

Again, I find it hard to believe that the club would be making signings if they were actively considering an immediate switch at manager.

That doesn't mean things won't change by Christmas, but I can't believe they'd waste any bit of a budget on players a new manager may not want. And moreso, by signing two players that would fit the current manager's high pressing system.

    ReplyDelete
  118. It's not hard is it to accept that there might be *two* decent young strikers in England, is it? One of whom didn't develop as expected when he got his big move, and another one who's about to have his chance?

This is the reality, Logan. You don't buy 15 good players and then your squad's finished and you're good to go. Every season you will be letting some players go and bringing some players in. Some players will fade or disappoint or won't be able to earn or to hang onto their chance, so you let them go and bring someone else in. Other players get a niche that keeps them working for a couple of years.

I don't understand why you must try to fit *everything* into the pattern you've decided exists. You seem to think like a conspiracy theorist at times. Can't you grasp that even people you don't like will sometimes do things for reasons you can accept? That even people whom you regard as inferior will make decisions which *you don't understand* but which are *better* than the decisions you yourself would make? These kinds of ideas are fundamental to serious critical thinking, but you seem to just be throwing them aside. It's over the top.

    ReplyDelete
  119. It's not been as bad as all that. Our competition in England are Spurs, who've suffered even more badly than we have with disappointing signings around the same price -- and that with a Director of Football, star foreign managers, ruthless board etc etc.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Theycallmemrburt8:18 pm, June 09, 2015

There is a lot of transfer speculation regarding players leaving. If there was any justice Allen's name would be mentioned a lot more than it has. Three years and nothing definitive to show for our £15 mill. Sums up BR's reign perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Rodgers scrapped the high pressing system this past season. It was nowhere to be found 2014/15.

Milner and Ings adds to our home grown quota, especially with Johnson and Gerrard on their way.

Who joins and what happens right now is irrelevant until we have heard via the club what the plan is.

The fact that LFC have not confirmed the departures of Pascoe and Marsh is quite staggering especially when it had to be confirmed by Stevie G.

Without doubt there are huge similarities in fortunes on and off the field between the two of us but it doesn't bring me any solace and certainly doesn't make it ok that the club constantly make poor decisions. You talk alot of sense mate and the truth is as it stands it is us and Tottenham but why should we accept it? when it comes to my beautiful club my heart will always rule my head and I and many others want better than this as I'm without doubt you do to.

  128. He didn't scrap it. If anything, he moved players around to accommodate it when it was not working with Lambert and Balotelli.

He started playing Sterling as the main striker. He stopped playing Lambert and Balotelli.

What doesn't make sense is why he wouldn't have played Borini more to try him out.

In terms of the new signings, just because you add to the homegrown quota (which I don't believe we were in danger of falling under), that doesn't mean you go out and sign players that a new manager might not want.

Who joins and what happens right now is certainly relevant. It's just not relevant to you because it doesn't support your argument. If the club did zero business, you'd use that as evidence for your case. And now that the club has done some level of business, you're trying to dismiss that evidence because it doesn't help your case. You can't have it both ways.

The fact that LFC have not confirmed the departures of Pascoe and Marsh doesn't mean anything. And the fact that Stevie was surprised doesn't mean anything either at this point. He's no longer on the roster and admitted that he has no further say in the process.
