Agent 'confirms': €21m Brazil superstar wanted by Liverpool has transfer 'offers' from a number of clubs. LFC?

New reports today claim that Liverpool are still tracking long-term transfer target Dani Alves, and with the Brazilian almost certain to leave Barcelona this summer, his agent has confirmed that a number of clubs are in the running to sign him. Could the Reds be one of those clubs?

When asked over the weekend about Alves's future, his agent, Dinorah Santana, told reporters:

"Yes, I can confirm that there have been contacts. There are offers that I do not want to reveal. I can only add that I just have to wait and see how things evolve."

Could one of the offers to which Santana refers be from Liverpool? It's a nice though, but it's doubtful.

Unless, of course, LFC offer the Brazilian an obscene amount of money, in which case, he'll probably sign without hesitation, claiming that Anfield was his first-choice, and he's attracted by the club's history etc.

In any event, Manchester United have offered Alves a €21m salary package to sign for the club, which Liverpool cannot - and should not - match.

Alves is definitely leaving the Nou Camp. In September, a statement on the official Barca website confirmed his departure:

"We are delighted that Dani is here, and with the performance he has provided for the club. Both sides have reached an agreement though that his contract will end in 2015"

A month later, Alves told reporters:

“Next year I'm moving to England. I'm going to play at the home of football. This will be my last season at Barcelona.”

A few weeks ago, Alves reiterated his intention to leave:

"From June 7 I'll announce my future. My intention was not to speak, but I haven't been respected with a lot of silly things. It's gone too far".

So, Alves is definitely coming to England, which means Liverpool will almost certainly have a chance to at least compete for his signature, even if it may ultimately be pointless.

Imagine having a player of Alves's experience in the squad - It'd be a massive boost for all concerned to have a bona-fide WINNER at the club.

Unfortunately, for the elite of Europe, Anfield is no longer a prestige destination, and the Reds don't have a manager capable of attracting a high-profile player like Alves.

In fact, I'd be surprised if Alves has even heard of Brendan Rodgers.

One thing is clear, though: I'd rather see Liverpool spend £150k-a-week on Alves over James Friggin' Milner™.

  1. Would bring in great experience, but why go to Liverpool when Man United have CL football, are probably going to offer higher wages, and will still probably secure his position in the starting 11?

  2. Genuinely would rather have Milner we've already got a full back who can't defend

  3. I cannot see him accepting a contract that depends on the number of appearances he makes.

  5. thought it was quite well documented that the most interested club in Alves was manchester united, don't even think liverpool were ever mentionned.
won't loose any sleep over him, he's great going forward but not so much defending, and that's what we need.

    No, No, No, No,

We still have Manqueeni, John Flanno, Wisdom, that is 3 right backs for 1 position. We can do with these players this season and save the money on wages etc that would be spent on someone like Alves for players in much needed position like CDM, YES, YES a DEF need a CMD. Get in William Carlvaho and Mateo Kovacic. Get rid in the midfield Allen and Lucas.

  12. Good post Mr B.

The way 4-2-3-1 gets played in England it's usually just like a 4-4-2 with split strikers anyway :)

As I see it English football is still mainly about fitness. Teams can drop off and invite midfielders into the play-making positions because they trust their midfielders to be fit and committed enough to close the angles and lanes centrally. Strikers for the beat-down teams, the teams that look to keep possession and create, such as BR's Liverpool, have to be able to keep up constant movement dropping off, moving wide with purposeful runs, as well as showing in behind in order to win space for midfielders to have a chance of creating anything in the final third.

Ings has that kind of game, unlike the men we inexplicably bought last summer, so he should be useful. He also has the pace to threaten on the counter and the feet to need defending darting in behind. He's got a great chance to kick on here, very excited for him.

  13. honestly seeing how they're not that better than us defensively and the physical nature of the pl don't know if it would be wise for them... hope they'll get him !

  39. I hope so mate! He's been about as much use as a Chocolate fireguard since he's been at the club he just flies around the world low-balling (not a metaphor for tea-baggin but maybe thats what he's doing) and just offended teams with offensively low bids...And then flying home without any one signing but at least he got a free holiday

  55. No. I just felt like we dithered through the last summer window, unsure of ourselves and then threw a desperation pass at balo hoping for a magical transformation that no one else has accomplished.........He who hesitates loses his prime targets

    ReplyDelete
  56. Manc U did sign Blind, Rojo, Wellbeck so even if falcao and DiMaria flopped Manc U finished in CL and we didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  57. They are an improvement on Lambert, Borini, Balo and Markovic but hardly the types to propel us to CL football.............We did this last summer. First signings, inconsequential whilst the best targets got signed while we were hemming, and hawing sand wringing our hands in indecisive. Then signed Balo as an overt act of desperation...........

  59. We can all dream of the ideal goal-scoring centre forward. When it comes down to it we must make the best choice of what is possible. However, last summer how on earth did the transfer committee decide that Balotelli represented a better bet than Bony ?

    ReplyDelete
  60. He may not be the most exciting player but I'd think he would be able to improve on his record that he has at Burnley, and if he can score 10+ goals that wouldn't be a bad return.
One thing I do like about him, is he gets in the box, something that no one seems to want to do at Liverpool at the moment. So hopefully he can be there to pick up a few simple goals.
I still think we need to bigger name signing, one who brings in a little excitement to the dressing room and the stadium.

As well as being an arrogant coach Rodgers speaks of improving players as well as the individual, helping them to become 'men' of substance. A quality that he is yet to display himself. It's easy to act dignified and correctly when things are going well but BR demonstrated last season that he is a back stabber. He may be a reasonable coach in time but he lacks the character to be successful. He should be gone.

I agree Ings could be decent.

I just wanted to pick up the point you make about the 4-4-2 with split strikers because it's a good point. We really need strikers who work the back four laterally the way Collymore and Fowler would or Sturridge and Suarez. Heskey and Owen for example both occupied the center halves which left our wide midfielders isolated. As Barnesy said " There's only one way to beat them, get round the back" We don't have good enough players throughout to play with split strikers. It only worked for a season when we had the then world class of Gerrard and torres grabbing 20 each. Now we'd be lucky to get 10 goals out of whoever plays in the hole be it Coutnho or Sterling and be very fortunate if Sturridge, Ings etc get more than 15.
