Anfield-bound? Liverpool plan shock bid for 'unbelievable' £20m attacker with 25 goals and assists 36 apps

Prior to the signing of Danny Ings, Liverpool were heavily linked with fellow Brit Charlie Austin, another striker whose team suffered relegation to the Championship this season. With Ings now on board, Austin is arguably no longer needed, but new reports claim that Austin is inexplicably back on the club's transfer radar.

According to Sky Sports today:

* Liverpool are planning a 'shock bid' for Charlie Austin.

* Austin is 'not a primary transfer target' for Liverpool this summer, but Brendan Rodgers is still allegedly 'weighing up a move'.

* Austin is aware of Liverpool's interested, and has consequently 'stalled on his exit from QPR'.

Gosh, where to start with this one?!

* If Austin - dubiously described recently described by Harry Redknapp as an 'unbelievable' striker - is 'not a primary target', then what is the point of signing him?

* Ings OR Austin, but both? It speaks volumes about Rodgers' judgement in the transfer market that Ings clearly *was* a primary target ahead of Austin, who is far more prolific in the Premier League.

* In May, I conducted a poll on the site, asking fans to choose between Ings and Austin. A whopping 75% of fans preferred Austin over Ings, and it's not hard to see why:

- More prolific: 25 goals/assists in 36 apps, compared to Ings' 15 goals/ assists in 38 apps.

- Goal/assist every 1.5 apps (vs. Ings' 1 every 2.3 apps)

* After Ings, the clear priority is (or should be) the aggressive recruitment of a top-class, experienced striker with a history of consistently scoring goals. If Rodgers' answer is to stack the team with British players who recently graduated from the Championship, then there are serious problems at Anfield.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol is against the signing of Austin. When asked recently about the Reds' interest, Nicol admitted that Austin 'has talent', but argued that he'd probably follow the same underwhelming trajectory as Adam Lallana, another British player with alleged 'ability, skill, and a little something different':

“Lallana...hasn’t worked [and] he [Austin] is going to be another player that falls into the category. Liverpool need to sign players that from the get go we know what we are getting and [will] drive the club forward from the situation.”

Last summer, I argued that Liverpool would not move forward with the likes of Lallana and Lambert, and it's exactly the same this year: Milner, Ings, Austin et al will NOT push the Reds to the next level, and it's endlessly depressing to see the club linked with and/or signing such (comparatively) average players.

Additionally, Austin may now be too expensive to justify. According to QPR Director of Football Les Ferdinand

"We would love to keep Charlie Austin at QPR...but someone scoring 17 goals in this division, you’re looking at £15-20million at least.”

Granted, after being relegated, QPR don't have much of a bargaining position, but Austin will still (probably) cost £10m+, and for that money (combined with the eventual fee for Ings), Liverpool could've signed Luciano Vietto, or Roberto Firmino, both of whom are more prolific that Austin and Ings.

It's positively bone-chilling to think that Liverpool's chances of returning to the Champions League next season may rest on the shoulders of Ings, Austin, Lambert, and Balotelli. *shudder*

It seems that Rodgers is hellbent on turning Liverpool into a facsimile of the England team; Perhaps FSG should go the whole hog and get Roy Hodgson back in charge, too?

  1. Firmino to Utd almost done I hear. What a shame, we could've done with a player of his caliber.

  2. This is becoming comical if true!!! There is no plan to take us forward...If they want him out they should just fire him..Or is a deal in place that he is out in 6 months???

    ReplyDelete
  3. I just don't understand any of this crap. Is anyone at Liverpool even trying?? Players such as Vietto, Lacazette, Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko are all available but we still go for these Mid-Table quality attackers who are only at most good enough to be 3rd, 4th choice. I'm so done with this load of crap! All I hope for now is a miracle that will bring back Liverpool Football Club to where it belongs, IN THE FREAKING TOP 4!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. If anyone can figure out our transfer policy let me know?, we over-pay for dross and low-ball for top players...............baffled.

  5. It is utterly incredible stupidity.

    ReplyDelete
  6. He will have wasted our budget by then, leaving a mess for Klopp to sort out

    ReplyDelete
  7. United have Depay ( who Rodgers eloquently stated at the time wasn't a necessary targeted player for Liverpool ) and are capturing the excellent , Firmino but LFC have Ings and maybe Austin. You are kidding me ?
The battle for 6 th spot is heating up now.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Why is Vietto so much better than Austin? Their numbers are about the same, only Austin did it in the premier league, which means he already understands the demands and at an underperforming team, meaning he did it under arguably more difficult circumstances. I think the negativity against Austin is clearly because he is British and because he plays for QPR, both of which are nonsensical reasons. The man had 17 goals and 7 assists. What more must he do to be worthy of a transfer to liverpool?!

    ReplyDelete
  9. It's actually quiet simple:

Throw it at the wall and see if it sticks

    ReplyDelete
  10. For me, Vietto is a better option because he has European experience, and clearly has the talent to thrive in Europe (14 goals/assists in 12 Euro apps this season).

That automatically puts him ahead of both Ings and Austin, neither of whom have any European experienced.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I believe you're missing the point. Based on your comment, the same could've been said last season (and was by many fans), and look what happened.

If it looks average, and feels average, it's most probably average.

  12. Plus playing for a relegation threatened team is completely different to playing for a team with high aspirations. We have learnt that so many times the hard way and yet we do not seem to change.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Latest news Tevez rejects Liverpool , Falco to Chelsea , Vietto and Lacazette have turned down moves to Liverpool and maybe Nobody else wants to move to Liverpool ?
SO maybe Austin is not so bad !

    ReplyDelete
  14. Buy rubbish for high prices citing their PL experience, do not go for players tailor made for us citing that we do not need them and then when the players inevitably fail, you blame it on inexperience and a "young team".

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm bucking the trend ....I'd sooner have Austin for 10m than some guy looking for a pay day .....in a 442 I actually think we would get 20 to 30 off these two up front

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jaimie,
All these players are mentioning WILL not move to Liverpool .
Fans need to accept that the GLORY days are over .

    ReplyDelete
  17. Let's not beg ....I only want players who want to play for us regardless of calibre

    ReplyDelete
  18. If Rodgers is harbouring the England managerial post he should just resign there's no need to turn LFC into a team full of English players

    ReplyDelete
  19. Then it will be Ings and Austin

    ReplyDelete
  20. Unless Raheem gets sold for some absurd amount, then only I guess FSG would buy someone bigger than Oprah!
Maybe the press would love LFC, since mostly British players and the heat would not be on the BR's head?
I think if we sign Austin, we might be borderline top 4 in the league standings next season.
From what I have seen, Ings appears the workhorse and Austin the finisher.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mark Lawrenson summed it up today by saying "If your aim is for Liverpool reach the top 4 and play CL football then you must sign players worthy of playing in the CL". It makes sense, but are FSG really aiming to get the club back into the CL? Rodgers had that remit, he failed yet he is still in charge, why? Kenny had that remit, failed and was sacked. So what has changed? Liverpool have no chance of reaching the CL with free transfers and over hyped British players. FSG surely must know this by now so what is really going on behind the scenes?

  26. Frigman on the bench for England - is he a bit part player for them as well?

    ReplyDelete
  27. With Rodgers as manager and no cl we have to set our sights accordingly, wecat compete with city etc for top players so there is no point in embarrassing our selves

    ReplyDelete

  31. Please knock it off with this superfan schtick. If fans want to question signings, they can, and they don't need you trying to guilt trip them into 'support'.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sterling missed a sitter- what a surprise

    ReplyDelete
  33. So you only support the fit 11?

    ReplyDelete
  34. The mercenary just missed a sitter

    ReplyDelete
  35. The moment I saw him through I knew he would miss. How he can command so much is a mystery. We should have accepted City's bid IMO. If they bid more, accept it without a thout. BTW, hendo is wearing Stevie's number

  36. You are free do do so , BUT please let me state my side as well ?

  38. As long as we get 35-40 m im fine

    ReplyDelete
  39. If we get Kovacic, I would want a midfield three of Kovacic, Can and Hendo..

    ReplyDelete
  40. You can state your side in a constructive manner, by engaging in civil discussion with fellow posters. Posting pointless one-liners questioning the nature of other posters' support is antagonistic, and achieves nothing. It's a form of sniping, and does not foster a pleasant environment. If you don't like the nature of someone's support, tough luck. Take issue with their *opinion*, not the individual.

if this is true wow this is abysmal... LFC need a proven class striker not more English dross (no offense even though i support England we all know English players aren't all that good).... i want to believe that BR is only comfortable with English players afraid of taking the leap to working with a more foreign squad... that is my opinion i could be wrong mind u but actions speak louder than words

    ReplyDelete
  44. Goof point. The main focus in my opinion, however must be the Premier league where Austin, due to his experience, is a marginally safer bet. The reality of the situation is Austin is far more likely to join us than Vietto, who is being targeted by A Madrid. As much as I would like us to be signing the Vietto's and Firminio's of this mad football world, I think we need to be realistic. That boat sailed after last season. I can't say why we ended up with Balotelli and Markovic instead of Firminio and a Jackson Martinez type, but now we need to take what we can get. I still have high hopes though! That British spirit of never say die, what!

  46. Agree with say tino lalllana and Mr glass infront ....…id even put ibe with can and hendo before milner

    ReplyDelete
  47. Completely disagree. Some LFC fans might consider certain signings disppointing but once they are signed they will look to support them as long as they deem necessary........ which is usually after their debut. Football is all about opinions and Glen's opinion is reflective of many LFC fans. Where did he say he was a superfan? He just posed a question, he did not say that others must agree!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Wrong. They are relegation or championship purchases and targets.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Good player but definitely not what we need now with both Ings and Origi coming in this year. The priority has to be a world class or potentially world class talent. After all we've lost 2 global icons in as many seasons; Suarez and Gerrard.

I personally think this transfer window will reveal a lot about FSG and what their actual aspirations for LFC really are. At the start of their ownership, they were obviously very involved with the club and had great aspirations to take the club back to the top etc. In that time ,they made a hell of a lot of changes - 2 managers came in (Dalglish and Rodgers), they appointed and then sacked a director of football (Comolli), and latterly established a transfer committee.

What I find interesting is how much less involved they seem to have become with the club. At the beginning of their tenure they attended a lot of games, wrote open letters to the fans and sanctioned substantial spending on transfers. Last season, we had John Henry famously and publicly mock Arsenal about their Suarez bid and we also had his wife (Linda I think?) send tweets after numerous games. Now fast-forward to the 2014-2015 season. John Henry and his wife attend a lot less games, we have no humorous tweets about Man Utds alleged interest in Sterling and our spending seems like its going to drop dramatically. Okay, Liverpool spent around £110 M on transfers last year but lets not forget that they got approx £70M for Suarez along with another approximate £10M for player sales, so their net spend wasn't actually much at all.

What I find really bizarre now is the deafening silence from the club. We've just sacked our assistant manager and first-team coach - No comment from the club. Rodgers who's under intense media and pressure from the club just had his end-of-season review with FSG - no comment from the club to clarify his position and end the crazy speculation. Steven Gerrard, one of the greatest legends in LFC history had his final game for the club - No comment from FSG.

I hope I'm wrong but, as an outsider looking in, it looks a little bit like 'okay, guys we've tried hard to get Liverpool back to the top but it doesn't seem to be working so let's focus our attention elsewhere and let Ian Ayre run everything (commercial deals, PR statements, transfer deals etc).

Now, obviously we're early in the window and everything but at the moment things just dont look good. And I know we're obviously building a stadium extension but Ayre has previously said that won't affect our spending. And I think if that was a reason we can't spend as much, LFC should clarify that to the fans as we'd be a lot more understanding of the situation. But the deafening silence and the speculation that goes with it is hard to bear.

what do you guys think as I'm worried about the direction the club is heading in?
And apologies as this is long and probably isn't too well written but I wanted to the get that one of my chest and see what some of fanbase think.

i've been scouting hendo and lallana so i get what your saying

    ReplyDelete
  78. I see you don't think he gives us any more than we already have. You could be right but sometimes against certain teams you need a more solid midfield and he and Hendo could give us that bit of steel. He might not though;-)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Sorry I misread that ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  80. voice of reason6:51 pm, June 14, 2015

thanks for that logical view... he can give us that certain extra grit against physical teams but how some fans view him as if he's the english pogba... joking... i do agree he can add something we don't have but just like at MCFC and England he should be a bit part player

    ReplyDelete
  81. Going around questioning the support of other fans is not constructive, and is outlawed. If a poster has a problem with the nature of another poster's support, that's tough luck. Question specific opinion, not whether someone is a supporter or not.

They hate the manager, the owners, Ian Ayre the transfer committee, most of the players, most of the ex-players turned pundits, the new signings and potential signings their fellow fans and even some Liverpool web sites

    ReplyDelete
  87. No, they don't 'hate' any of that. Fans have the right rto question every aspect of the club, as it wouldn't exist without the fanbase.

Liverpool FC only exists because fans across the glibe spend tens of millions every year on tickets, merchandise etc, which allows the club to sustain itself.

    ReplyDelete

Perhaps it may well have been better if Liverpool FC gave Hodgson more time. .... I don't know but who knows..... it does say something! Too many negative sheep..... Just read the Echo comments! 96. I think those three and Couts are our midfield for the next season. With Ings and Origi and some bloody flare I think it can be enough..

kudos fair point.... we are rumours about kovacic some Barelona defenders in the media... no news about a quality CDM or Striker though.... atm it seems to me that transfers are being conducted on the approval of the transfer committee and not with BR's input... i could be wrong but how can a guy on holidays and no official confirmation from LFC be conducting transfers... BR conduct also i find to be most dis-pleasurable there is LVG and Wenger helping to co-ordinate transfers... and here's our manager our shining knight in armour out in marabella

    ReplyDelete
  98. voice of reason7:35 pm, June 14, 2015

once milner does not impede hendo and Can's nailed on starting positions in midfield i am ok... but given what we know about BR i expect Can to be unfairly banished to the bench

    ReplyDelete
  99. A good balance can be established between the three I think. But only if manager is good enough and we collect enough points on the start.
But if Kovacic comes, it will be a hive in the mid..

    ReplyDelete
  110. Investing in a miracle is what I call it. Had Suarez stayed would be much easier for the rest of our class players to chip in and keep mancs out of top 4. Now we have Lallana, cOUTS, hENDO, CAN, sAKHO, and wit some experience and youth, and the bloody flare we can kick them out. Than find another Torres/Suarez and go for the jack pot.
And every new season is a chance for a trophy as we are Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Jamie, as usual you're article is over simplified and doesn't reflect reality:
    1. I haven't seen even one article linking LFC to Austin, which is actually quite odd as we've been linked to practically every attacker in the world in the past 3 months. Even if we were linked with Austin, it doesn't mean that it's true. Any idiot with a blog can start a transfer rumor...
    2. We did activate Vietto's release clause (along with Arsenal & Atleti). The lad seemingly chose Atleti for obvious reasons. At this point can't blame Rogers for that.
    3. I agree with you it's a shame we didn't go for Ferminio. However, we should have done so last summer when had a halo of success around us. There was no way that he would leave a CL team and come to LFC this year. Unfortunately as you argued last year, we chose to spend 25m on Lallena instead of 15m on Ferminio. What a shame.
    4. This sums up the issue with LFC; we had a golden opportunity last year to Draft some world class players and we blew it on the likes of Balotelli, Lambert and Markovic. Now it will take someone like Klopp to attract elite players as currently Inter who's 8th in Seria A has more pull with Mancini then we do.

    ReplyDelete
  112. voice of reason8:51 pm, June 14, 2015

if suarez had stayed i agree we would have made top 4.... the problem now is getting a top class striker to get us back there (morata maybe)... i do like BR don't get me wrong he made me start back believing its just his stubbornness that irks me... if he gets rid of that nature of him he can be a world class manager.... sigh i am hoping for the best though cause at the end of the day we are all LFC supporters and we don't ever want to see our club fail

    ReplyDelete
  113. Why is my opinion that you are not answering to Glen because he makes a valid point you can not answer deleted?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hes not even stubborn in the right places. Eg of sturbborn managers :simeone. Bodgers is just foolhardy

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  116. Dog be with you

    ReplyDelete
  117. At best. Undoubtedly the club is heading for relegation. Nothing could be clearer. I may have to consider my options.

    ReplyDelete
  118. They have the ONLY quality that matters... they have the right passport... they would rather spend on average british crap than go with foreign players with actual talent... how many brits were on the teams that won the title in the top 4 leagues for the last 10 years... there is a reason for that number being close to zero... if we want to get serious about winning a title we need to adopt a zero brits policy.. (and yes I am british..)

    ReplyDelete
  119. What is the use in bringing Austin or any other striker for that matter. We have 6 senior CF. (Origi Ings lambert balloteli borini sturridge)

  120. The point is not in these players coming. It is in the transfer committee trying.

  121. I will go for berahino who suits to Liverpool system than Austin, only concern is with his agent Aidy Ward who will pollute his mind after 2 seasons

  122. Terry, Hart, Lampard, Jones, rooney, ferdinand, milner, giggs, Cole, carrick, evans, young, Fletcher, oshea, cahill, barry and richards off the top of my head.... quite a few to answer your question!

  123. And only £13m reportedly....gutted

    ReplyDelete
  124. Tevez, Falcao, La cazette, Benzema. That's what we need

    Benteke sure

wouldnt be too displeased with Vietto

    ReplyDelete
  125. Don't worry; I'm sure we can sign Lee Cattermole for at least 16 million pounds.

  126. From SAS to BAIL. Yep.

  127. Good points. Also because his first touch is better, he can dribble, and for me strikes the ball rather like Torres did in his prime.

  128. And clearly we need that European experience to get us into the top 4 next season...NOT!!!!!!! Sorry Jamie I have to disagree with you and most of our armchair managers on this topic. We finished a poor 6th and we still have delusions of grandeur based on our terrific past and finishing 2nd two seasons ago. We just don't have the pulling power to get the players that we want because we aren't in the champions league and because we are LFC and don't offer the bright lights of London. I think that Premier League experience is far more important that European experience at this point in time to get us into the top 4 next season. I f we need a new manager then so be it, but Jurgen Klopp doesn't do it for me and based on current form I don't see him as a replacement for BR, look at where Dortmund finished this season. I think BR deserves another season.

  129. Just fuckin sign Tevez for fuck sake

  130. Why doesn't anyone decide to just support the club and give some of the players a chance before just destroying them before they've even started. I think we can all agree we messed up last 1-2 years on transfer dealings and we should have bought someone world class to replace Suarez. If Levy was doing some of these deals it would be hailed as "great business". Is very early days in the window and we appear to have done some good business. Did anyone outside of hardcore Spurs fans know of Kane over a year ago and he scored 30 goals. We all aspire to have the worlds best but some of this seasons business (so far) looks like good business. Of course if that's where it ends we can all have a good moan but lets see where we end up on ins / outs at the end of the window. If Sturridge does ever get fit then a choice of him, Ings and Origi plus I am sure we will buy one other looks pretty decent. On top of all that we have to just accept we are NOT in the CL (1 swallow does not make a summer), we are not in major multi-cultural international city, our manager is not a big name and we are not owned by a Russian Oligarch or Middle Eastern oil money. People have short memories - we nearly went under with H&G!

Mate im sick of people saying we can't attract players anymore because we don't have CL, here is a lesson in the world of football from one of those armchair supporters.....
    1. Money will attract footballers
2 A world class manager with a proven record will attract top players.
Thats what you need and the rest will fall into place.
JK you are spot on 100%.

All good players but surrounded by even better players from outside of the UK.

  133. I'd be interested to know what your assessment of sturridge and coutinho was, when they were signed.

    ReplyDelete
  134. From my point of view they were seen as bit part unproven and unwanted by their previous teams, bit like some of the players we been buying last 2 years. Kane been loaned around and then all of sudden out of nowhere hits pay dirt. Pogba unwanted at Utd, De Bruyne unwanted at Chelsea and look at the fees being touted for them.

  135. I think you lot are far to critical of all the players we brought last year, they were mostly kids, instead or nurturing everything they have learnt so far for playing in their positions BR came along and ripped it all apart played them all where he wanted and made them unconfident and totally unsure of their roles.

This is the sort of thing that made Gerrard and Carra special they were moved about wherever the team needed them and it worked (to a degree Rafa played SG on the left to much) Those guys it worked for but not always.

Now please tell me why a bunch of 18-23 year old's are expected to be able to do this after coming to a completely new country and league.

Its BR doing this those kids didn't have those clubs putting huge buyouts on them for no reason.

  136. I agree Jaimie apart from I'm pretty sure Rodgers doesn't have anything to do with the transfer targets apart from saying What positions he needs players for . Right Mr Rodgets you can have 3 championship players, bogdan,Ings snd Austin and you can have milner because man city have let him go. If we get £40 mill for sterling we will bring in the other half of the Southampton squad for you to play with and if you don't win the league with these amazing players your sacked

  137. Coutinho

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2013/01/lfc-transfer-news-rodgers-to-offer-13m-coutinho-inter-milan.html

    Sturridge

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2013/01/nicol-aldridge-hamann-react-to-12m-lfc-12m-sturridge-signing.html

I was a little wary of both signings, but positive about their ability to make it at Anfield. Re Coutinho, I said:

"Coutinho is undoubtedly an exciting player: skill, trickery, pace - just the kind of attacker Liverpool need".

    Re Sturridge, I posted:

To be honest, I'm not that thrilled with the Sturridge signing, but hopefully he'll be a big success, and I'll be rooting for him to succeed

I also defended him against (what I perceived to be) unfair and counter-productive comments from Rodgers and Gerrard:

  138. Ings was a good buy (if he comes in for 6M) and an upgrade on Lambert or Borini, and if our current trio are departing it leaves Sturridge, Origi, and Ings. We will definitely need another striker and I think Austin would be a Bargain at 10M assuming he stays injury free. I agree that Firmino would have been a great signing and I worry that we wont make top 4 next year. We are now a mid table team.

    ReplyDelete
  139. "marginally safer bet"? Borini, Lambert, Allen, Lallana were all "marginally safer bets" to Fimino, Adriano, Dybala, Lacazette, Koke, Ruben Castro and Rakitic etc. Now we go for Ings, Austin, Bogdan! Indeed , they are safer bets but honestly it doesnt work out like that. Abumeyang, Hu-Seung, Klassen, Jese, Halilovic, Calhanoglu, Max Meyer, Julian Draxler arent safe best but they are better than these guys that BR is stacking, while letting go off Pelosci, Agger, Reina, Coates

    ReplyDelete
  140. Ah, you are spot on. Its not really about being anti-British. Chamberlain, Walcott, Barkley, Chambers, Stones etc are our own (British) players who are miles better than Lambert, Allen, Lucas. Its about WHICH British players you buy.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Ouch! Lucas is Brazilianese.

    ReplyDelete
  142. They like the trajectory- Allen(15mill), Carroll (35mill), Adam (15mill), Cole, Downing(20mill), Lallana (25mill), Ings(reported 10 mill, Austin(18 mill wanted by QPR because he scored sooo many goals). I could work out a song using the first letter in these fantastic players' names. Then use the song in an advert for Dunkin Doughnuts or something like that

Then there is Lovren, Bogdan. Oh my gosh

    ReplyDelete
  143. The reason why the transfer committee, not br alone will bid for both and others is because that is the nature of the game across Europe. you even bid for players you have no intention of buying, but to bump up their contract at the club they are at, so rivals use up their funds quicker. with injuries and uncertainty over who would settle and more importantly7 deliver at Anfield if the price is right I would take both ings and austin. FSG are sticking with their buy Young plan. it is nothing to do with brendan rodgers limitations or inability to go for the more expensive Targets of which he alone isnt permitted to do full stop.
