Confirmed: Liverpool 'offer' €12m 'warrior' 3-year deal at Anfield; player currently 'assessing' the offer

In April, £12m-rated Liverpool stalwart Martin Skrtel dismissed rumours linking him with a move to Wolfsburg, and confirmed that he is definitely 'not leaving' Anfield this summer. Skrtel remains one of LFC's most consistent players, and his agent has now confirmed that the Reds have offered the Slovakian an enticing new deal.

In an interview last night, Skrtel's agent, Karol Csonto, told Radio Kiss Kiss:

“I can confirm that Liverpool have offered my client a new three-year contract. It is a good offer, and the player is assessing the situation”

When asked about interest from Rafa Benitez's Napoli, Csonto added:

“I do not know whether Napoli will contact us with an offer, but anything can happen in football. However, I cannot see this happening since Liverpool have offered a three-year contract.”

Like last season, Skrtel - hailed this season as a 'warrior' by Rodgers - is Liverpool's most consistent defender, and for me, he is far more deserving of a new contract than Raheem Sterling or Jordon Ibe.

I'd go one further and suggest that Skrtel should be Liverpool's next captain. Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson also wants to see Skrtel succeed Steven Gerrard. In a recent column, Lawro insisted that the Slovakian has 'more leadership qualities', and further noted:

"Skrtel plays almost every game, could handle the responsibility and it would help him communicate more. He is a battler, too. He got stood on the head by Giroud [vs. Arsenal] but he stayed on to head home a late equaliser".

I recently conducted a poll asking fans who should be Liverpool's next captain:

* 55% of participants voted for Skrtel. Only 28% chose Henderson.

* 10% chose Lucas; 7% Lallana; 1% Lovren.

This suggests that there's a slight disconnect between the fans and Rodgers on this particular issue.

* After Gerrard, 'warrior' Skrtel is one of the most senior players in the squad; he's paid his dues, and after six years at the club, he's arguably earned the right to lead the team.

* After being dumped for Jamie Carragher last season, Skrtel showed real strength of character and admirable attitude to fight his way back to being Liverpool's number-one centre-half. In that time, the Reds have spent £45m on three different central defenders, yet Skrtel remains the one constant in the heart of defence.

* Skrtel is the perfect bridging option. After Gerrard leaves, there will be immense pressure on the next captain to live up to the skipper's influence. That's even more likely to the case with Hendo as he is a midfielder, and therefore directly comparable to Gerrard.

* Skrtel is a defender, so there will (arguably) be less pressure on him. Plus, at the age of 30, he probably only has a couple of years left at LFC, so it makes sense to give him the job, and allow Henderson to work at increasing his influence on the field.

* Once he's achieved that, Henderson will - through the consistent level of his performances - command more respect from players and fans alike, and that will help his transition into the role of captain.

* Additionally, Henderson will have the advantage of taking over from Skrtel, and not Gerrard.

Alas, I can't see this happening. Judging by the constant effusive praise over the last two years, Henderson is clearly a Rodgers favourite, and remains the most likely to become Liverpool's next captain.

  1. Based on the magnitude of our signings. Lovren, Lallana, Lambert. Why doesn't it surprise you that we won't do the same here? Maybe even with a team like Swansea or AVL.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Both Lovren and Lallana were too expensive, not poor signings per se.
IF they fail to deliver next season, then they will have been both. For now it's too soon to tell...

  3. Except what do you consider mid table? Where do teams like Tottenham and Southampton fit? I am sure that they are a level in between top and mid table, but I doubt we are better than any of those sides ATM. Both of our 2nd games against them were won by mere luck.

I think that we are turning to mid table when we get thrashed by teams like Arsenal and fail to beat WBA, Hull and even AVL.

  4. Everyone either forgets, or choses to ignore the fact that Lallana has been struggling with injury this season, even playing with broken ribs because he was needed..... Not to mention, Lambo was just straight up forgetton.

  5. Neither does a complete lack of ambition & being blinded by rose tinted glasses.you can't judge BR on last season wasn't his squad.due to lack of squad depth & injuries the team picked itself.now its predominantly BR's squad he doesn't know what his best 11 is.fails to motivate when most needed.plays way to many players out of position.failed miserably last summer in the market.proven incapable of thinking on his feet.hence why they've been found out way to many times.but if you want to put a positive spin on it feel free.see you failed to mention champions league exile which we had when we were further away.

  6. Fact that they are above mid table would suggest they don't fitinto the mid table scenario.

  7. mid table is usually errrr, the middle teams. The one with 9 above and 10 below. That's why it's called middle

  17. Don't recall using the word realistic.& yes it was Houlliers squad.just shows what can happen with the right person at the right time.my point about the champions league was the fact we playing in it when you said the team was worse.now the team has improved we aren't good enough to qualify.wasn't about how far we went or any other team for that matter.what relevance is there to are squad value compared to another pl team when your playing Bulgarian road sweepers.

  18. Son is a good, talented player. But he's not THAT good. certainly one to watch, but I'm not sure he's someone we need right now. He's definitely more of a wigner/wide forward or an AM than a Striker, so he wouldn't really solve anything. Perhaps a target is we miss on Depay.

  20. Personally I'd argue that the £200m+ that's been wasted on transfers is the worst thing that's been done by any Liverpool manager in the past 20 years. His dismal transfer record in my opinion is in itself worthy of a sacking.

His capitulation in the champions league alone is also worth being sacked given the easiness of the group we were given (not to mention the farce that was the away match at Madrid - playing your reserves in such an important, high profile fixture clearly demonstrates he does not have the mentality to manage a big club, and shows his complete disillusionment with the fans).

His inability to notice when tactics are not working as well as being tactically outclassed by 'tactical geniuses' such as Louis 'long ball' van Gaal, and Tim Sherwood is also unacceptable, not to mention his ineptitude in handling the media, something which is a constant embarrassment to the club and to the fans.

All reasons why Rodgers needs to be relieved of his duties this summer.

  21. A 2nd finish (without any Europe game & being erased from domestic cups by Dec) & a 5th place finish with CL exit from group stage (losing out to a Swiss Club), then first hurdle exit from Europa & out of every Domestic Cup, that too in a year when both MU clubs are probably at their worst in last 5 years & Spurs also unsettled - that is "will have been better than anything achieved by Benitez ........... in recent memory". - boy, I guess you have started watching football in 2009....

Mate, RAFA took us to TWO CL Final & another couple of SF, AND we qualified for CL every year but his last one, from that EPL era, when 3 teams played in SF twice & once both the finalist. During his time, 3 different EPL teams won 3 CL (including Chelsea over Bayern) & another team made the Final - in total about 7 or 8 finalists in 5-6 years period by 4 teams & I have lost count of the semi-finalists. This year, none from EPL in QF & last year CFC made the SF playing probably the ugliest football ever seen in CL QF/SF.

I spent so many words to make someone realize that the context was a bit different, & I am not talking about the 200mn+ that BR was allowed to blow. I understand, it's an inflated market; but had Rafa got remotely close to this money (inflation adjusted), you have no idea what he would have achieved. I can give a clue - Since .....(probably WW II) ....., Rafa Benitez is the only Manager to win 2 La Liga without managing any of the BIG 2 in Spain & he is among very few to take 2 Clubs into CL Final, from 2 different Leagues & without "Spoiled Money".

One Adam Lallana purchase is sufficient for a Manager to lose his job in some other clubs & I am sure that, only because we are LFC & hardly sack our Manager, has kept BR in job. I can point half a dozen failures that's good enough for him to be sacked, but lets not go for those. However, one issue that 'll hurt LFC if BR remains - money 'll not buy a world class forward to play under a nobody Brit Manager outside UK (& inside UK there is no class forward, let alone world class).

Nothing personal, but I am surprised to see so many likes for your post.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well he's spent enough to cover for those 2 players.
And I must say he's done his job
If he leaves right now. He'd have left us in a better place than he found us.
Then again he'd have left us with dead wood to sell(same as king kenny).but without a suarez or a trophy. I'm just stating facts here mate. But another fact is we might just finish fifth (higher than when kenny left) but I'd like to argue looking as we've spent the 5th most money.is that not where we should be?

  24. The article fails to mention that Benteke has been part of a struggling team since he arrived in the UK - a fact that always gets overlooked.

If Bony is worth £28m, Benteke is easily worth £30m

    ReplyDelete
  25. He soesnt look like a 20 goal a season player?

He has 12 goals after missing part of the season with injury and playing in a team that averaged 3 shots a game before Sherwood took over.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's unbelievable reading comments like these from Liverpool fans. You don't have any idea just how good Benteke is. He's the real deal. The author likes to talk stats, but stats don't tell the whole story. He adds a whole lot more to the team than just goals. He came back into an awful Paul Lambert team this season which i think set some sort of record for having the least amount of shots on-goal and on-target and weren't creating enough chances. Now that the team has a manager that wants it score to goals, Benteke hits top form. It's no coincidence. Overall Benteke's goal record stands up, and that's for a team at the wrong end of the table. I suppose that's why so many Liverpool fans want to sign this Lacazette guy. They've looked at his stats for this season in the French league and decided. How many times have all these people watched him play? How many times have they watched Benteke play? Not much by the sound of it, otherwise surely they still wouldn't be coming out with crap like "he's overrated". I really hope Liverpool don't sign Benteke because the fans don't deserve him. And there's no way Liverpool are going to get him on the cheap either, you're a fool if you think that's happening. He'll probably go to Chelsea, Man Utd, or Arsenal anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think those who put the club before their frustrations will agree with me, possibly hence the likes.

Not taking it personally at all, and I do agree with a lot of what you write above, I love Rafa too and I still think his sacking was the biggest betrayal of this club by the previous owners, possibly more than the failed stadium or the lies about how much money they were going to plough into the club. But equally it's not 2009 any more and we have moved on to a younger manager who needs support. Given what he has achieved (and yes, putting aside that not everything he has done has been brilliant) I think we should be giving him a bit more credit and looking to next season.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Nothing wrong with Kopite's post.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Liverpool will never win the Premier League with the current goal keeper. In fact this goal keeper should give up soccer. He does not learn or have the capability to watch and learn from others. He cannot kick, throw, talk / scream, read the game, support his defenders, when to come out, corners. Clearly indicates a mismatch for the position. Maybe cricket. Get rid off.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Again, so negative man. Look at the context of the signings:
in the 2012 quote he says that there will be one signing that fans will be excited about. He signed Sahin and Allen, both of whom were being added to a very struggling midfield and both of whom were extremely impressive in the previous season. No, neither of them set the world alight but there is no doubt that both looked like good signings.
In the 2013 quote, he talks about how there will be one or two to complete the jigsaw. Sakho, the PSG captain and French international, arrives to help with our threadbare defence, as well as Moses, who prior to signing for Chelsea looked like an amazing talent.
It's all so easy to criticise after the fact, to sit there and say 'I wouldnt have done that' but you need to think like the manager would have in the same position. 2012, BR is in a new job, looking at a midfield that is lacking a passer. He's just come from a Swansea team whose great season was orchestrated by two players, Leon Britton and Joe Allen. e chose Allen because a) he knows his style and wants him there, b) the midfield needed his type of player and c) he was AVAILABLE AND WILLING.
I just dont get how people can criticise the manager for signing a player who was fantastic but fails to live up to the bill afterwards. Is LVG stupid for signing Di Maria because he had an average season? NO, he is a moron for other reasons, but not for that one, Di Maria is a great player. Was Vialli rubbish because he signed Bogarde, who was great for Ajax and Barca, but flopped horribly at Chelsea? No, Vialli was boss, and made a decision based on experience that unfortunately didnt pay off.
This is what I keep saying regarding Lallana, Lovren, Sakho, etc, that the decisions to sign these players, based on their performances in seasons immediately preceding them, are logical and reasonable. The result of the transfers is the only thing in question and that down to a combination of factors, not just the gaffer.

    ReplyDelete
  36. None of this changes the fact that Rodgers has been promising 'exciting' players for three years and failed to deliver (bar Coutinho, and Sturridge).

No one asked him to make those statements; he did so unilaterally, so the pressure is self-inflicted.

It doesn't matter how you spin it, Rodgers' signings overall are not good enough.

On a different note: please just stick to debating the issues, and drop the personal commentary about my opinion. It's irrelevant, and any further posts containing moaning about the nature of my opinion will be edited.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The nonsense about my support for Rodgers you melon.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think most of us agree that Rodgers has difficulties setting up defences. One reason being he doesn't know what a good CB looks like. He has become convinced Skrtel is his best defender when he has always been erratic. He is one of the reasons why we have massive gaps between defence and midfield on a regular basis and Rodgers continues to be blind to it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Some of us would argue that the praise for Skrtel was.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This looks like another example of poor management and poor judgement. The club are negotiating contracts at the wrong time (during the season) they seem unable to keep details about their negotiations in house even using the press to pressurise players and they seem to be trying to insert new clauses which might be desirable but are difficult to implement when other clubs are not.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have only seen him question Stewart Downing's effort. But you are very correct and spot on about how Rodgers needs to drop his nice guy approach

    ReplyDelete
  42. "So people can type out of there rear as well as talk out of it".......You are the one who is talking crap like that and I dont give a rats arse about your support for BR.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Was it too faint?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Without a doubt he has his deficiencies as do all players, but on the whole he has been the most effective CB for us over the past season. I think the reason we have a massive gap between defence and midfield is the lack of a fully mobile and effective DM.

    ReplyDelete
  45. go for cabaye, he is very good

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've heard that a new appearance clause inserted into MS contract offer is holding up the signature. Apparently it is asking that MS makes 80% of first team appearances per season to trigger his full pay. This really frustrates me when I hear fussy unnecessary clauses holding up a contract. If it's true, we can always rely on Ian Ayre to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You forgot Borini, Aspas and Luis Alberto. There is no doubt in my mind we'll end up with rubbish again. I'm actually more interested to see which of our previous rubbish we'll manage to flogg to other clubs and at what loss?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Agreed. Which is why I keep saying, Frank de Boer.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Disagree. Although the DM is one peoblem Martin's propensity to drop deep has caused us problems for years. He always just does what he thinks and everyone else have to accommodate. He was brilliant in three as deeper was where we wanted him button a four he created problems. The fact he covers for his own mistakes soboften clouds people's views. Ask any great defender and they will tell youth best are not the ones making loads of last ditch challenges etc. The best don't have to as their positioning was so good in the first place it limited the opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well its going to come a time in the window we will be selling to buy and the slower we are at selling the less likely we will get who we want.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Why shouldn't we expect any further? Real Madrid apart, Basel and ludogrets are hardly superpowers., compare it to citeh group of death containing Roma, Bayern,CSK and if performance is taken into account our performance in UCL this year should be worst in history. I don't have a problem with you defending BR, come the end of season we'll see who is Boss

    ReplyDelete
  52. Back to the Rafa methodology of having to sell to buy, as opposed to Money Balls..

Maybe FSG are suggesting: Its your mess BR you fix cos we ain't giving you another £100m since we don't trust you..

    ReplyDelete
  53. I find it very depressing that folks feel the need to "blindly" justify BR's decision rather than simply be honest and suggest for example, "He got it wrong, but was trying his best at the time".

This way you can maintain your support for BR (no bad thing!!) but can demonstrate personal integrity.

I may disagree with you, but then your support of BR will have credence and respect. History has many examples of "blind allegiance to a cause or person" leading to no good.

    ReplyDelete
  54. If BR was to land the likes of Depay and Lacazette, my disenfranchisement towards BR will soften significantly.

However, BR will need to show in the first 3 months of next season that he has a plan and the tactics to make best use of the players and the squad - otherwise we'll be back at square 1.

Otherwise there is no point in changing BR - better the devil you know and all that..

  59. 100% agree with this article - and I like the way it revealed the players Rodgers was hiding under the word exciting. Apart from the increasingly minority of Bodgerites (who I expect list DIY as their favourite hobby - each with a trail of botched up jobs left behind them), every man and his dog in Liverpool know that Rodgers is a fancy Dan - gleaming teeth, a smart click of the heels, a touch of the blarney - but a fantasist, delusional, egotist, a pseudo-intellectual, a fool who is easily parted from money that is not his own - a B movie, 'small part' bum of an actor who somehow found himself in charge of a once beast of a football club that he is systematically shredding to bits.

The summer is going to be long and painful. Better not get your hopes up. We will be spending most of the summer clearing the deadwood to raise some money and will be scrambling around for some panic buys. There is no way FSG will be spending another 40- 50m + on players without CL or selling an asset.

Our chance to do that has come and gone. Milner on a free, Neto, Burnley right back and either Ings or Austin with Origi coming in and maybe Song, Kovacic or Delph to strengthen the middle will be about right.

So Montoya, Illamerindi, Kondogbia, Carvalho, Cabaye, Depay, Lacazette, Vietto, Firminho, Hummels, Reus i.e. mostly marquee players we will probably miss out on.

You've pretty much just agreed it wasn't all about Suarez. You mention Sturridge, who let it be known, scored more game winning goals than Suarez, and the turmoil at other clubs...... Everything culminating into the perfect storm....

What you neglect to mention though is that Brendan is the first manager in Liverpool's history to take club that had been on the brink of collapse, with an aging over paid squad to the brink of winning the title in his second full season.....

We lose the two most deadly stirkers from last season, and you think coming 5th and still making two semi's is a joke... Not forgetting injuries to one of our best defenders in Sakho, a fading Gerrard and new players getting injured and or just not finding their feet...

I think people are too quick to forget all the underlying issues, and make over zealous claims because we are Liverpool FC.... I never thought the fans of LFC would be like this, I always had a deluded opinion of our fans being something more.... How wrong am I.....

Everytime Mourinho does something retarded, we hear about it.. Same with any manager.... I remember Nigel Pearson grabbing a plyer round the throat... I also remember Alan Pardew's headbutt... I think you'd be extremely hard pressed to find any true event from Shanks or Paisley that could be called unsavory.... But are you telling me I won't remember LFC trouncing of Arsenal last season because they didn't win any trophies, your sorely mistaken... Tell me, without looking it up, who scored in each of the finals when LFC won the treble under Gerrard Houllier..... Bet you can't.

Now you just being silly. Or tell me, did Brendan just arrive this season.... But just for the sake of it, each and every human being is aging, just a fact of life.... And again, all the players Brendan has sold have been overpaid....

  83. Pls don't hide behind your condescending remarks and tell us all those specifics about those ageing stars, their ages and how much they were paid ,which in your book is over paid.

  84. It is contradictory to say that 1. No manager has won the EPL without prior success elsewhere and 2. Rodgers who has no prior success is the right man for the LFC. How??? You have admitted yourself he lacks the requisite prior experience of success. So how is the right man for LFC. Under Rodgers LFC will continue to underwhelm. Fifth is about par for his talents. And forget about being able to attract a marquee signing especially as his fortunes continue to nose dive. If I were FSG I would pay him off and cut my losses and bring in a tried and tested man like Kloppy. Just look and the shitty players rodgers has filled our ranks with. apart from Raheem and Couutinho I cannot think of any other player that any top club including the top four in the EPL would be interested in signing from LFC...not one!!! That just about sums up the dross we are saddled with by Rodgers. Now how do you trust such a bungler with more dosh in the transfer window? Some hard decisions have to be made FSG!!!

I'm hanging up on this converstaion, you are now clutching at straws to try and win a point, a point that has long since lost all relevance to the original...

  87. Then for you there is nothing like playing a striker out of position...as long as its in the final third. If BR keeps on believing this idea of "never-out-of-position-as-long-as-its-in-final-third" I believenext season will be just as disappointing as this season has been

  88. Balo knows how to play as a lone striker yet doesn't. Plays like he has a partner despite not having one. That is not out of position. You think Rodgers is telling him not to make runs in to the box? To pick up possession near the half Way line, lay it off and barely move and Want the ball back. He is a striker being played as a striker. How is that out of position? Name any other striker who can't play without a partner?

  89. Im nt going to become a BR apologetic. BR is s#!t when it comes to utilising players (if he buys the proper players). Mancini, Mourinho have made good use of Balo in the past. You cant tell me that at 24 Balo has "expired" . Why are you willing to hide your head under the sand and accept that BR has issues with placing players in their correct positions. The list of players wasted by BR's insistence os playing people out of position is to big to ignore. Im keeping quiet on this Jay Jay. Let us agree to disagree and lets both wait for next season to see if BR can change his transfer failures and player mis-placements

  90. This is Mankind who had a massive well publicised spat and Mourinho who said he was unmanageable.
As for BR playing players in other positions, he does and sometimes it is a waste of a player and other times it doesn't work at all. But there are times it does. Mario isn't being played in the wrong position. Is he on midfield, wing, defence? No. He is not " Out of position" ( he isn't in the job enough but not sure that is instruction) he is just being played alone up top. That is not out of position, it is just perhaps not getting the best out of him. My argument is he isn't hood enough to build a team around which is seemingly what he wants. He is not expired just lost.
