Depay/Sterling: Who's best? A whopping 72% of fans give their emphatic verdict

Earlier this month, Manchester United confirmed the imminent signing of coveted attacker Memphis Depay, a player who would've been the perfect replacement for Raheem Sterling. In my view, Depay is a better (i.e. more effective) player than Sterling, but what do Liverpool fans think?

I conducted a poll last week asking fans to choose between the two, and the results were emphatic:

* 72% of participants voted in favour of Depay.

This is an absolute no-brainer: Depay - who is only 10 months older - is streets ahead of Sterling, and at a cost of £25m, he probably end up being infinitely cheaper. Comparative stats this season:

Depay

* 28 goals/8 assists (36) in 40 apps (Goal/assist every 1.1 games)

Sterling

* 11 goals/10 assists (21) in 52 apps (Goal/assist every 2.4 games)

If Sterling had achieved Depay's figures this season, then his demands for such a huge salary would be more palatable, but his overall return - especially in the league - is not befitting of £150k-a-week.

Man fans don't have a problem with players being paid obscene salaries IF they're worth it.

Take Luis Suarez, for example - during his time at Anfield, he received no less than three pay-rises, but he consistently delivered the goos, and - along with Sturridge - his goals propelled Liverpool to the brink of a first title in 24 years.

On a related note: in my view, it's an absolute joke that the club has named Sterling 'Young Player of the Year'. For what? Failing to score for 17 games in a row between September and December? Scoring one measly goal in the last 15 games?

Emre Can is far more deserving. I'm not his biggest fan, but he's been consistently good (defensively) ever since he broke into the team. Sterling performed for one small patch in the middle of the season, and then went missing (again).

Plus, the club is basically rewarding him for being a mercenary. Hey, you've held us to ransom all season, and you want to quit Anfield, but here, have an award!

Ridiculous, and I'm glad fans booed The Mercenary as he collected the award.

Plus, the award will only strengthen Sterling's position in contract negotiations. Liverpool never seem to get it right.

Whatever happens, and wherever Sterling ends up next season, I confidently predict that he will be outperformed once again by Depay.

  1. perhaps give the award to sterling is a tactic to try and keep him?
Personally i hope he is gone, What i am even more infuriated about is that we did not try and get depay? with sterling leaving it makes rodgers excuses about having enough wingers a total joke!

  4. Please sell him so we can stop discussing him. His attitude is symptomatic of all that is wrong with modern football.

  5. Suarez "delivered the goos" eh?

In future JK, keep your grubby mitts off my dirty laundry.

  6. The problem with selling Sterling is, their is only 1 winner and thats this agent !

  7. I defended Sterling for a long time but I'll concede it appears you were right about Sterling all along Jaimie and I agree it's time to get rid. Of course the club will say he's not for sale but I would think anywhere around the 40 million mark would get the deal done

  8. Sterling deserved the award just for putting up with the crap that has been put on him over this season. It shambolic how liverpool are letting a top talent slip out of their hands....the future look bleak for the club unless they are acting like a big name players want to play for again.

  9. You're absolutely right. If Sterling goes to any club other than Arsenal, I expect it to be to the detriment of his development as a player but that doesn't matter to the agent. He'll get his cut of the massive transfer fee and his name in the papers, which he undoubtedly wants since he's branching out on his own and if it doesn't work out, he'll promise Sterling another big money making move

  10. I've never been totally convinced by Benteke. He's a decent player by all accounts but I'm struggling to see how he fits in to our system. He'll also cost an absolute fortune when there are probably better, more affordable options

  11. Do this: Benteke for Balotelli

    ReplyDelete
  12. Danny Ings for Borini
    Assombalonga for Lambert

    ReplyDelete
  13. Then Konoplyanka for Sterling

  14. At least our defense won't have to play against him anymore. That's a plus, right?

  15. The amount LFC will pay for CB- better to try sign Alex Lacazette

  18. Rumour is Newcastle want Ings so maybe ,
Liverpool will have B&B next year ,
    Benteke and Bolasie .

  19. Totally agree. The reason most Liverpool fans rate him is because he always plays well against us but that is more to do with our deficiencies than his quality. I guarantee he will struggle if he joins us like other players who have done well against us like Downing, Carroll and Lovren.

  20. He's a good player.

But Rodgers requires a high energy player as our striker.

I'm not sure Benteke is that player.

  21. Nope he's jus a glorified Andy Carroll. It's gonna be a very interesting summer for this club because if Rodgers gets it wrong again there is genuinely no excuses and I'll be chomping for his head.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Agreed. There's better and cheaper elsewhere

    ReplyDelete
  23. Apparently Spurs have agreed a deal for him

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oops Metro - didn't see that

  25. How do you not know by now that Spurs and Soton don't actually have a scouting network?

They just piggyback off of ours!!

  26. Unfortunately, I feel like we're more likely to have a bed and breakfast

  27. Sterling award not an issue with me (whether deserving or not ), James Pearce posted a photo of Brendan with his missus on twitter and he seems so excited... Not bothered of sack?

  28. THEN IT IS GOING TO HAUNT US. A CASE OF MORATA IN JUVE AGAINST R.MADRID

  29. But now Sterling can say he won a trophy at Liverpool!

    :)

  30. I confidently predict he won't. People are just following the crowd and are hacked off with what they believe about Sterlng and most have probably never seen Depay play.
