Replace Sterling? Liverpool chase 'world-class' €15m attacker who's 'supported LFC for 20-years'

A few months ago, reports in France claimed that Liverpool had offered 'world-class' Marseille star Andre Ayew a pre-contract agreement, and with the summer transfer window just around the corner, the Reds are once again linked with a move for Ayew, who has made it clear for the third time that he's interested in a move to Anfield.

Over the weekend, €15m-rated Ayew reaffirmed his affection for Liverpool FC, when he told reporters:

"I really like Liverpool; I've suppored them for 20 years. My dream is to play in the Premier League at the highest level. That can be a dream, but it's true that I'm a Liverpool fan".

Ayew has also revealed his preference for Liverpool a couple of times in the past:

* June 2013: He told Telefoot:

"It [The Premier league] is a league I always think of. I am Ghanaian and an English speaker, and I have a strong preference for England. As for Liverpool - I followed them as a child"

* Feb 2015: Ayew enthused:

“All my life I have been a Liverpool fan. I have had a lot of different offers from different clubs [and] there has been contact. I will make a decision soon. It would be an honour play there"

Ayew's versatility probably makes him an appealing option for Brendan Rodgers. He can play as a winger, or a striker, but is he prolific enough, though? Stats for the last few years:

* 2010-11: 13 goals/3 assists in 51 appearances.

* 2011-12: 16 goals/4 assists in 39 apps.

* 2012-13: 13 goals/5 assists in 45 apps.

* 2013-14: 8 goals/4 assists in 29 apps.

* 2014-15: 10 goals/5 assists in 24 apps.

* Totals: 63 goals/21 assists in 190 apps.

* Goal every 3 games

* Goal/Assist every 2.3 games.

Ayew has been at Marseille since 2007, and at the age of 25, the time is clearly right for him to test himself at a bigger club.

Additionally, there's very little risk involved as Ayew is available for free in the summer, so it's basically a no-lose situation.

That said, I'm sure he'll demand a big signing-on feel, and substantial wages, but that's a little easier to swallow in the absence of a transfer fee.

I'd have no problem with Ayew replacing Raheem Sterling. The African striker is (IMO) a far better player, and Liverpool could do with a big influx of cash to help with this summer's vital transfer window.

Even if Sterling stays, it's a win-win situation, as he currently has no real competition. Ibe is just starting out; Markovic isn't cutting it, and Lallana isn't a winger.

Ayew is far more experienced, which is what Liverpool need, and if the Reds sign him (or another left-sided attacker), Sterling will be forced to up his game and score/create more goals to stay in the team.

  3. Really don't want Milner, I think he's so average and we have enough of those already. Like the look of Ayew though.

You must have watched a different game to me. Yes, he took the free kick for the goal. I don't remember any glaring missed chances on goal from the 4 through balls you claim aside the one I mentioned.

I didn't say he didn't/doesnt give 100% every game. What I contend is that Liverpool Football Club demands a lot from it's captain. The last two, Sami and Stevie were exceptional in organising and driving the team, and in inspiring and rescuing and leading respectively.

I like Hendo. He for me however isn't special enough for the armband long term. For this team, we need a European/world class player to do that. And much as I like the guy, Hendo is a step below that and I don't see enough in him to become that in the future

  8. somehow I must agree.

  9. Henderson isn't average, he's clearly very underrated though.

  10. He is a fantastic player...................far better than Sterling, on a free too............................YES.

  11. we've been lucky with freebies if i recall ,why don't you rub that lamp mate ;)

  12. OK, I'll watch the game again later. I thought he had a good game, but perhaps I was watching through my Hendo-tinted shades. I happen to think he's a top midfielder, one of the very best around.

  13. Ings, Milner, Ayew and Konoplyanka are all available on free's.

  14. Like the look of both, for free I think either would be good business. Get Ings too and we'll of done well for not a lot of money.

You can't mitigate Balo's problems with the faults of others. I was praying that Mario realsied that the MINIMUM requirement for LFC is to give your best. And both Sturridge and Gerrard have shown that, even if you believe they haven't every time, then both have shown it for extended periods.

You're right, a lot of things are about impression. Hendo isn't the hardest working player at LFC for instance, Lallana is.

BUT - As a forward myself, and having spent a large part of my youth at a Premiership club, I've a fair idea of the expectations of a forward. And Mario except in patches, refused to make runs which he was well capable of making, and insisted in playing HIS way despite the needs of the team.

He STROLLED back onside SO many times, instead of sprinting back on and making a new run for his midfielders to play to. I lost count how many times he tried to beat 3-4 players and score a worldie

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lets sell Sterling for silly money and then USE IT WISELY One big worry is that b r Seems to want to hang on to everybody - if he still insists on this then HE MUST GO

He had an OK game for me with a couple of excellent passes, but lacks that final bit of finesse guile or craft, and turns like a supertanker sometimes.

He can make good, but rarely great, contributions, but when all eyes are on the captain to make the difference, then that's where I feel he falls short.

He will NEVER EVER let us down though

I broadly agree, however BR HAS to take responsibility for some glaring headscratching decisions this season. Even yesterday when we needed a goal to retain any chance of the top 4, our keeper and back four were playing sideways balls along the back four, eventually losing possession. This was in INJURY TIME.

At one point I saw Skrtyl being told to stay back for an attacking free kick when we needed to score. And why not leave Gerrard's substitution until the last 2 minutes? why not leave Lallana on? We didn't need Lucas. We needed to score.

    ReplyDelete
  19. And if he lets some or all the deadwood leave then he should be sacked. It seems only fair

In what way? He has 15 goals/assists vs 14 for Sterling this season

8 goals and 4 assists vs 9 goals and 5 assists, or 12 vs 16 last season

he's 4 years older too. Sterling has a while to improve yet

not saying don't get him on a free.

But you and JK are making statements about him being better without factual foundation

    ReplyDelete
  23. And play him where? Instead of who? I don't think he's an improvement on anything we've already got.

  32. Its funny though, BR buys players who can play in 3 or 4 different positions and then he plays them in the 5th position where they have no experience but just because they are versatile.

Glen Johnson is going but lets play him at LB instead of Moreno.
Emre Can is CM but lets play him at RB instead of Manquillo.
Markovic is a forward but lets play him at WB instead of Manquillo/Moreno.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why do people keep pushing this idea of not having the finances of the top 4 clubs. Firstly, our hierarchy seem to think that we can compete financially with the best, so may be this question needs to be put to them again. Secondly, 'hhaving the finances of a top 4 club' is a complete irrelevance. Even if we had twice as much we would still throw it away.

We had top 4, bundles of cash to spend, and an illustrious history but still managed to buy players that a 6th or 7th placed team would buy. £230M, 5 transfer windows and 22 transfers later and the squad is not much better than when Rodgers arrived. That is not progress, and that alone is why Rodger's should be moved on. Not for the poor performances, but for his inability to take us forward.

  34. Yes we know klopp is a proven winner, and I wasn't slating him, just comparing the situation to the manager we already have, Im a big fan of klopp and would pick him if BR was harshly sacked, but he's Been given the chance, why not compare them the same age? Then BR has achieved more by taking an unfancied team into the premier league, you may as well sack BR and bring in Sven currently, since he has more career achievements on paper

  35. You can't always beat the teams you're supposed to beat, and your best players can't always be fit.

Any club's best chance of success is to invest wisely in their squad. You do that, and you end up with players like Suarez. Players that do their job well and stay fit. You therefore increase your chances of beating the teams you expect to beat and even those you don'tdon't.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You're prob right..

....lets put it this way Chelsea and Man city were really nothing to speak of but very good players were persuaded to go there at the time when they had no momentum....money aside there really has to be more done on the persuasion front by BR and committee and ayre...to create a WHOLE package of vision and desire to the player...of course as well as money........

...but I feel we are presenting a very tepid affair to certain players..... not really worried if they come or not....very good for not getting taken over a barrel as has been last couple years but seriously with new money coming into league the separation from about 14th position to 4th is not as massive as it might seem at first...

...we really need to tell fsg to get over downing, carroll et al and start realising what Stevie baby said was right....back the manager and buy some decent players even if only three or four.......

  41. I think it's funny that they will recoup some of the money and still have a higher net spend than LFC. And that their wage bill will be a lot higher. They attract better players even without champions league because they pay players twice as much, not because of LVG. That had never been the way LFC works why would they start now. As a fan of LFC I respect what they do on the field and in the office. I don't follow a team that buys trophies. I prefer they earn it the hard way.

Doesn't he know he plays for Liverpool! The 5th best team in the land. The team who hasn't won the league in 26 years and counting. The team who's legend is leaving to play in the United States next year. The team who's manager calls everyone's performance "outstanding".

Why people keep calling Milner average is beyond me... He is well above average, hence interest from Arsenal aswell as LFC... Oh yeah! and why City are desperately tryingto get him to sign a new contract and stay with them... Especially when you consider they would rather keep him and get rid of Yaya Toure, Nasri and Navas to name a few.....Average, pah!

Well, we can play hum at CM, his natural position, or we can play him as RM, again a position he does very well.... Or we could play him as a RB seeing as Rodgers likes playing midfielders in at RB...another position he does fairly well.... Hell he could probably play CF if you asked him... Accomadating fellow.

  56. Would be a nice depth signing.

But for the wages he wants, we couldn't afford to keep him on the bench.

In the right role, he'd do well here. Unfortunately, I don't believe he'd be put in the right role.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Instead of who? If we play him centre mid does he play in front of Can, Lucas, Henderson or Allen? We play him on the wing does he play in front of Sterling, Ibe, markovic or possibly Ayew? The only possible position I see him starting at is at full back but I'm pretty sure he's not coming over from city to be a full back. He's also not coming to be a squad player so back to my original question, where does he play and instead of who?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Each of those decisions had positive outcomes though. The only one you'd look at now and wonder about was Markovic, because of how that worked out when Aston Villa targetted him and Can in the FA Cup semi final, just lumping the ball into their space and overloading it. Previously to that all Markovic's best performances for Liverpool came on that right hand side. He scored his nice goal against Sunderland away, for example, from that position.

You'll say I'm saying this *because* I admire Rodgers, but it's the other way round: I admire him *because* he does this sort of thing. The sort of thing you think is bad management is to me evidence of a serious football mind. Funny old world.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Because he's English and city don't have many for the English quota?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well, he is superior to Sterling skill wise and also much more confident and inventive in front of the goal. Sterling always wants the ball on his right foot but in Ayew scores with either foot although he is a left footed striker. Ayew is also a brilliant header of the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Then Khedira for good measure

  62. Hmm. *weighs up* A classy international about to hit his peak, can play in central midfield, wing or up front, is on a free transfer and WANTS to play for Liverpool. Hmm.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ok but I completely disagree. Markovic never looked like a good wing back to me. I would play Moreno or Manquillo over him any day of the week. Markovic should always play forward. Also, I don't understand why Johnson (history) should be played ahead of Manquillo and Moreno (future). I hate BR because he does this kind of things. I think his man-management has been ridiculous this season.

    ReplyDelete
  68. With the money he's had any manager in the premier league could do a similar job. If newcastle had given pardew 200 million he would also finish fifth or higher. Hes nothing special. If we are not going to spend as much as the rest above us. We need a manager that can punch above his weight.
We spend less and have a worse manager that's why he needs to go.
This is the first time balo has been criticised this much for his football in his life. He's talented enough to achieve his potential. He's an asset being poorly managed by an average manager.under the right mind ie prandelli balo is far from "useless".

    ReplyDelete
  69. Maybe he's tired. Brent has played him almost every game. I don't blame him. Hendo is not a big player. He's not going to win u the big games. He almost always vanishes in the big games

    ReplyDelete
  70. He's not coming to be a squad player, he could stay at city to do that. He's coming to start but he's not better than Henderson, Can or Lucas in his "natural" position. He also isn't blessed with pace or trickery so he's not as good as Ibe or Sterling. So we're basically signing a player whose not as good as we already have. We all criticising BR for his signings, whining because we're not signing marquee players but somehow are happy because we might be signing Milner, unreal.

    ReplyDelete
  71. We've spent too much to be worried about that or at least that's what we would like to think. If klopp had the resources rodgers had. He'd do alot better any where.

    Now your just being pedantic.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Oh ayt. Milner those a job but he's not better than what we have.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Well he is good but who would u rather start. Ibe sterling or coutinho or Milner.

    ReplyDelete
  85. All I'm doing is asking the question about where he's going to play. City want him to stay but he's decided to leave and possibly come to us, why? He must of been made assurances that he'll start games otherwise he'd just stay at city.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Why would they start now????? Well, unfortunately nowadays you need to spend to be able to compete or a proven manager to make the most of the resources. In Liverpool's case, they don't spend nor they have a proven manager. No wonder the title drought continues.
I'm not calling for massive salary increase nor for buying players in stupid wages. But we need to spend in quality players. We don't have one single world class player next year because the only one we had, was at the end of his best years and has wrongly (IMO) been pushed out of the team.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'd definitely take Ayew, looks like a good player.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I also like he runs from the left off the ball. Almost always catches his marker of guard.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Oh yes no doubt. But I don't think many English men want to go there after how they treat their English talent.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Well we can at least keep him till next year. Because if we play our cards right in the transfer market and diminish his importance by signing players better than him or on par. Some one like ayew would keep him on his toes.
I also don't understand why sterling didn't get a contract last year when the club was in a better position. He would have bit our hands of for 100k.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Both would do nicely. Right now we need goals that's the only thing we are lacking. Not enough shots from outside. Not enough crosses. We need more traditional wingers.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Totally goes for ayew after not much thought. A lot of teams want this kid
Roma to napoli to spurs to Valencia. If we wait he'll just cost a lot more when he blows up somewhere else. Like
Lovren. We wanted him waited till he came to England and paid a lot more.

  93. Agreed. From highlight videos Kono seems like the player we need. Plays with a lot of width has a good shot from outside the box and has set piece ability. Not sure what kind of stars he has.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Not kovacic he's not a number 6.
He's more of a deep lying midfielder. We need a proper bonkers tackler in the middle or two. The whole 3 centre backs thing is easily exploited by better teams with above average players on the wings. None of the players have prior experience with it. All we need is lucas playing but the wonderful rodgers doesn't know a good thing when he sees it.

    ReplyDelete
  95. "And if I watched him for a long time. "

That's a huge part of the problem. His age.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I don't think so. He's got a lot experience that's for sure. But u know I can tell u this how many wingers at lfc can head a ball into the net. None I've never seen sterling or ibe or markovic or lallana score a headed goal.
He's exactly what we need. He's got the physicality he's got pace and he's a goal threat from both feet and his head. How many players at lfc can u say that about? He's a leader a great motivator. He ticks all the boxes but that's exactly why the brilliant rodgers won't sign him because he's exactly what we need.hell go to roma and flourish and we'll be left crying about it. The story of 21 century lfc

  97. I reckon Ayew Konoplyanka and Milner on frees are all great business whilst using the funds available then to spend on a couple of reasonably big names.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Mmmm... well Toure might leave, Skrtel is aging, and Can is a CM. A solid CB wouldn't be a bad thing. That said, it's not exactly a priority.

    ReplyDelete
  99. yeah its ok mate my comment was designed to piss afew people off anyway......

it was a bit tongue in cheek!...cos I really rate Milner and would love him at our club...don't care if he's 28/29 he'll be playing footie well into his thirties cos of his lifestyle and playing style.....he'd be great....

please don't mention women sitting on faces...I'm a decent man and the temptation that creates in my imagination is almost too much to control....:)

    ReplyDelete
  100. Rumours starting to circulate Milner is going to Arsenal.

    ReplyDelete
  101. yeah lfcnyc74-phil, ....I kind of knew that was coming back....

....but you know when you just Have to say something and you Know it's gonna get you in trouble.......

...a bit like at school in assembly.....

...when you just know you shouldn't.......

    ReplyDelete
  102. also, to me it makes no sense to sign African players with our limited resources because they disappear for a couple of weeks every 2 years to play in the African nations cup, usually just as the fixtures start to come thick and fast.

  103. I try really really hard to keep it clean mate... I promise... don't want anyone hurting themselves...

  105. he had 30 appearances, so he's not short of game time...maybe he fancies playing for a club with soul....

    ReplyDelete
  106. Doesn't really mean anything when coutinho is an AM, Sterling and Ibe are wingers, and Milner a CM/RM

  110. I enjoyed this article Jaimie, aptly summed up the Balotelli situation. I'm worried we'll have a job shifting him though

  111. It does actually...diplomacy in the dark alleyway...

I think we could always use a player of Milners work ethic and character... He's not fashionable, but I don't like fashionable, you just need to look at what I wear everyday to see that.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Well that's all well and good But would he score more? Because that's what we need

    ReplyDelete
  117. Despite our defense being heavily criticised, our defense hasn't been that bad this season.we conceded 39 goals(only 3 more than both Manchester clubs and 5 more than arsenal). It's obvious where our problem lies!even Tottenham below us scored more.also the fact that our scoring record is poor puts added pressure on defense.i believe we could have avoided a few goals had we scored more and thus been in more comfortable positions during games.on the other hand had we scored10 more critical goals this season we would be runners up.i believe investing heavily up front would add goals and also decrease goals conceded thru decreased pressure

  118. Balo is nobody's best available striker. He has been over rated for 5 years. He wasn't even the third best striker on City. I'll never understand where the awe for Bali bubbled up from.

    Makes no sense.

  123. We have to treat balo like zalatan, he turn up good. Zalatan doesn't defend but if lvp is given the chance to get him many of you would say yes! Another example would be cantona, they don't defend but you would still want them in your team. Let's show balo some love!

Milner scores goals, but thats not really his function... His function would be a solid passer forward, ie creator rather than finisher....

    ReplyDelete
  125. Whenever I've watched Kovavic, he's looked like a classic creative number 8! I guess the most we can say is that he's adaptable :)

Disagree about Lucas, think his race is run.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Criminal how Lucas can only get a game when the team is truly imploding. All just to shoehorn into a position he's not suited to.

  129. It's PR. They are defending themselves from their fans, justifying the decision to sell by implying that there was considerable demand from big clubs and that they were therefore able to cash in on the competitive market.

    As opposed to saying:

"Well, we needed shome money. Sho we called up Louish and said: 'Hej! Louish! We want to shell you Depay now!' And Louish, he shaid "OK! Meet me at the ushual plashe in an hour!' and we shaid to him, 'Will you bring shome money, Louish? We need shome money.' And he shaid 'Don't you worry about that, boysh: uncle Louish' got it all under control', and sho we had a beer, and that wash that."

  130. They disappear for a lot shorter than Sturridge, then.

  131. Amen. Got to strike while the iron is glowing - for once.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Sigh. Hopefully he's just there to buy a long-winded ticket to John Lennon.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Aguero and Turan might have worked out, though...

    ReplyDelete
  134. I think he's a bit better than Henderson, especially based on his younger days.

    ReplyDelete
  135. OK, we know we disagree! That's good.

    1) Markovic

Markovic's wide role in the Liverpool team was *not* wing back. It was more specific than that. The whole system was asymmetrical. Markovic's positioning was that of a wide midfielder in a classic 4, not a wing-back. The defence was biased towards the right, so Can was always closely supported by Skrtel and Can could step in to support the deep midfield areas.

The right-sided wide player was supposed to play a key role in attacking transitions, carrying the ball through the lines, and offering only the kind of defensive cover that a winger would normally provide.

I watched a lot of Benfica last season. Markovic played a variety of positions for them. I saw him playing his best in a role that had him making attacking transitions from deep -- so not as a forward in any meaningful sense. He is an unusual talent and I hope he can come back from his struggles this season to play a role for us in years to come. I like his ideas, the way he plays. He looks emotional out there, too, which might become a strength.

But yeah, that wide role was not wing-back.

    2) Manquillo

Rodgers is being nice about Manquillo, but Manquillo is an U21s level player who was not ready to come through to the first team. You can see why people might have thought he was, because he's physically impressive and some aspects of his game are quite polished. But it was too soon for him. A bad signing in my opinion; I could have got them three or four good right backs for under five million quid, no problem. All you have to do is pick up the phone, Brendan.

    3) Johnson

It gives me no pleasure to say it, but Johnson is still the best full-back at the club, better than Moreno, better than Flanagan, and so on. There are frustrating aspects to his game -- it must frustrate him, too, because the things he's struggling with used to be his strengths, but... look, 90% of full-back play is about positioning and vertical movement up and down the flanks. "Position de piston", I think they call it in France. The pistons of the team. Up and down. Johnson does that brilliantly. How many times did he make excellent runs into wide areas against Chelsea, and receive the ball well? Five or six? Each ending in penalty-box entries? These statistics count in determining the quality of a full back -- even if it seems, to you and I, that Johnson is as *effective* when he gets the ball, as a... well, as something rather disappointingly ineffective.

    4) On hatred

I think it's crazy to "hate" BR because he tries things other managers wouldn't try in looking to get the best out of the squad. We've been crying out for a manager of that kind for decades, rather than just a wheeler-dealer and disciplinarian like Rafa or a bureaucrat like Houllier. Actually I think it's crazy to hate anyone. It's doubly crazy to hate employees of Liverpool football club, because they exist for me to look up to them and admire them. That is their purpose. It wouldn't matter if we were playing non-league. These people are my heroes. I'm not going to start hating them. I'm going to idolise them and hope they turn into gods! No less then love, hatred blinds us to reality and I think you have developed a tendency to jump to conclusions about players and formations. But the full picture is sometimes a bit more complicated than the one which appears in your arguments.

    ReplyDelete
  136. 12 goals in 145 for city is pretty bad for a goal scorer.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Didn't call him a goalscorer, said he scores goals....

    ReplyDelete
  138. Ok that doesn't make sense. If he scores goals, that implies a goal scorer. If u say I play football that implies u are a footballer etc. He's a hardworker
But I don't think he improves our team when he joins. We need goals so we should be going for goal scorers not necessarily strikers.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Ok, great response but I still think we are watching a different Liverpool here.

    1) Markovic played in a wing back position but according to you, his role was more of a traditional winger than a wing back. I had a problem with his position actually, he was playing too deep to have any attacking threat. He was also clearly asked to close down opponents as much as he can. I think he was struggling to close down players and felt very limited in that role. Couple of times he has made good runs, pacey runs forward which makes me think that he should definitely play further up the pitch. He should play where Sterling and Lallana have been playing in last couple of games. I think he can be best utilized there.
    .
Now when we bought Markovic, Jordan Ibe was sent on loan to Derby. This is what irks me. Ibe is 19 and already a better player than Markovic but will anyone shell out 20mn for Ibe? No. Markovic is already behind Ibe now in terms of development. BR should have realized that he already has a better player in Ibe and should have used that 20mn elsewhere. Even if Markovic wasn't BR's signing, he could have at least said NO and kept Ibe at the club rather than sending him to Derby.
    .
    2) Manquillo has limitations going forward and that actually makes him a better defender than Johnson. I disagree that Manquillo is not upto the level. I think BR should have played Manquillo when we were really struggling defensively but he kept playing Johnson. GJ is good going forward but he hardly have any impact in the final third? And if GJ is still the best full back in the club than why buy the likes of Manquillo? And why not extend GJ's contract?
    .
    3) Hatred: Did you idolise Roy Hodgson too? Did you look up to him and admire?

    ReplyDelete
  140. 1) They are very different players.

Markovic picks up the ball from broken play or a clearance *in his own half* and then accelerates through midfield with the ball at his feet. He can glide past the press or tackle, and release a forward; or if he can't find a pass, retain possession to start a period of pressure. His ability is best used from deep, because he can initiate attacks and advance the whole team.

Ibe is different. He's a stop-start winger who wants to stand up his man then burst through him into space to cross or shoot. He's very much a final-third player. He needs a platform: he can't carry the play forward himself. He's closer to a striker than a midfielder. But once we have the opposition pinned, Ibe can make us a good chance -- and importantly he can do it without needing help, so the whole team can be more solid and keep a better shape.

I think the end result -- that we have Ibe in a very good place in his development, with a player of Markovic's talent behind him -- is a solid outcome. The Markovic signing was a bit murky, but I believe most clubs at our level would have liked to sign him. He was the outstanding young player in one of Europe's hottest teams.

    2) I'm not saying things are perfect, by any means. I don't think we have the answers yet at full back. I'd bear in mind the absolute chaos the squad was in between 2010-2013 -- it was a ruin. The new people have done very well to bring us as far as we've come. We were in *real* danger of joining the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle and Rodgers, more than anyone, has steered us clear of that danger, to put us clear of Spurs and in contention for the top 4, two seasons running.

    3) I tried my best! I thought we treated a decent man and a competent manager like dirt. The whole episode was shameful and I remember it with acute discomfort. I wasn't watching much football at that time though, as I was very busy with work. My feeling was that the Liverpool supporters were yet to grasp how dire the situation that Hodgson had to deal with had become.

  141. That's why the "edit" button was created :)

    And who's phil?

    ReplyDelete
  142. What we really need is a striker who can consistently score and stay healthy, and lead the front line in the pressing style required.

Milner would be a nice addition in the right role and for the right wages. But he's simply not a striker.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Key phrase: "Best available Striker"

Balotelli is better than Lambert and Borini.

    And Sterling isn't a striker.

    ReplyDelete
  144. There was considerable demand for Depay. I don't think PSV needed to do anything to justify selling him. He is joining one of the biggest clubs in the world in the biggest league in the world. The fans recogonise his talent and the need to let him grow.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Who is going to buy him for big money?
Depay went for 25. How much would we get for Raheem?

    ReplyDelete
  146. We need to sign Inigo Montoya and tell him Aguero, Diego Costa, Eden hazard, Alexis Sanchez and David Silva all have six fingers!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Is Ilori dead, crippled or just so bad we will never see him again?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Red,

We ned two strikers desperately, maybe three. Ours all stink except for Sturridge but he can't stay healthy.....we have great youth talent to put around them but we need proven quality to allow the young speed we have like Ibe, Sinclais and Sterling to buzz about with couts orchestrating....

    ReplyDelete
  150. back in the top 4 for a start , just ask depay how well we have done this season, bottom line we done better than liverpool this season, we have a world class manager who has won things and can get world class players , liverpool have yes man manager who drives away players who have done more in football than him i.e gerrard suarez riena agger even sterling wants to go, but you keep joe allen and want to sign danny ings , and you dumb fans think rodgers is a top manager , good luck on that
