Rodgers confirms: 'Sensational' attacker and £12m 'warrior' are 'in talks' with Liverpool over signing new contracts

After months of uncertainty, Jordan Henderson recently signed a new 5-year deal with Liverpool, and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has today confirmed that two more important Reds' stars are close to committing their futures to the club.

When asked about the futures of Martin Skrtel and Jordon Ibe in nn his pre-Hull press conference on Monday, Rodgers told reporters:

"No more news on that, but both are still in talks with the club".

Wolfsburg are allegedly interested in signing £12m-rated Skrtel, but when asked last week about his future, the defender refuted suggestions that he's set to leave Anfield. He told reporters:

“I am not leaving anywhere. Not to Wolfsburg nor to Naples.”

Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto, also claimed that the Wolfsburg story is nonsense:

“The only offer which on Martin Skrtel’s table right now is the extension of his contract from Liverpool. We will be finalising it soon. It is not true that he has some offer from [Wolfsburg]”

With the ongoing loss of real experience at Anfield, signing up Skrtel is arguably a priority for Liverpool. When Gerrard leaves next month, the Slovakian 'warrior' will become most experienced player in the Reds' squad, and that will be vital next season.

Ibe, though, is a different story. His current contract expires in 2017, so where's the compelling need to sign him up to a new deal? The young attacker has done fairly well for Liverpool, but once again, LFC are guilty of rewarding a player before he's even achieved anything.

Ibe - predictable hailed as 'sensational' by Rodgers - will obviously sign a new contract; unlike Sterling, he doesn't (yet) have a strong bargaining position, but Rodgers is following the same sycophantic template, and it won't be long before Ibe's ego is inflated by Rodgers' incessant (and irresponsible) overpraise.

  1. With Stevie gone and probably Balo too, we need his kind of threat from free kicks around the box. Hendo just doesn't cut it for me

  2. barca can't buy players and Alves is getting too old so...

  3. Still, they don't seem to interested in keeping Montoya anyway.

  4. so true....

this is the reason i find it very difficult to reconcile in myself whether FSG should let BR go...

With cr** play and no striker in reality to speak of this season (not one with any long run in the team anyway - not balo) we've still kept pace with 4-5 th place albeit with other teams playing rubbish...

but as the man once said 'you can only play the team in front of you'..

so yeah, we are not too far off a really decent team....

    ie. I agree.. :-)

  5. Aurier? Clyne?

  6. Clyne I watched a few times and I liked what I saw, but the price is probably ludacris... or is it?

  7. I know but what options do they have?!?
PS: Hope Loges doesn't see what 3 of us are talking about, he'll get a heart attack..

  8. Doesn't get the action on the ball. He can probably take general free kicks but have you ever seen him bend a ball with top or side spin or get a ball up and down?

  9. Love Hendo but he has absolutely minimal cuteness on the ball. That's just not his thing, he is a decent striker of a ball, no more, ands we need the X factor.

I did notice we are playing far less of the clever angled passes in favour of a high percentage one, which retains possession sure, but gets us in far fewer decent attacking positions.

  10. The only reason I can see a contract extension for Ibe is in preparation for a Sterling exit. We want to make sure we definitely have Ibe for the long run if we let Raheem go. It could also be as a measure to keep his contract in check. Many small raises will be more effective than one huge one like Sterling is demanding. Assuming he's on less than 30K right now, If we give him a 10K raise every 1-2 PRODUCTIVE years, thats better than holding out till expiration and having to shell out a 150K contract to keep him.

  11. we have x factor in couts. Plus Sterling would get his time on the ing and with a decent striker infront he is an x too. Ibe on the other flank- Hendo id excatly what we need- a sure pass to one of the mags and let me tell you- he hes some great ideas from open play- quite a few beautifull first touch assists this season..

  12. The compelling need to reward Ibe with a new contract needs to be sorted asap we dont want another Sterling episode

  15. Another Soton player probably won't sit right with a lot of people though, regardless of how good he is.

Aurier is a good shout though. He hasn't really had a look in at PSG, but was one of Europe's best young RBs just a season ago. He's still just on loan, so perhaps a bid?

  16. If we don't do it now we run his contract down to its final year which gives the player too much power.

This time next year will be too late. Give him an incentivised contract now and get big money for him if he develops well either way we hold the aces

  17. Liverpool are 100% interested, and have been holding discussions with PSV. We're not the only club to do so, but we have.

  18. I'm not sure if Depay has spoken to United. I know he has to Liverpool, he flew to Manchester a few days ago...to talk to LFC officials.

  19. @JaimieK Definitely something wrong with the comment counter. This one says 21 right now (but there's only 3) and the previous article says 9 (but there is 31). Just a heads up :D

    ReplyDelete
  20. yeah heard about that.. if i lived in liverpool i would be on that fence every day..

    ReplyDelete
  21. Again I say, empty the bucket for Depay if he is really that good. We cant have another huge set of inbound transfers who have no impact and cant score. The summer transfer crop, aside from Can, was mediocrity laden, with a bunch of guys who can't finish anything except a post game pint! (markovic, lallana, lambert, Balo)

  22. Hard to fathom BR's view of the world. As much as I like his positive style, I don't understand how you could characterize the last 4 games, where we laid eggs big time, as fantastic, outstanding and examples of how we displayed character. We looked overmatched by Manu, Arsenal and even lowly Villa. We were nearly apathetic against brom until Ibe hit the crossbar. Even Coutinho and Henderson only showed decent energy in the last 25 minutes really. We are supposedly fighting for 4th but it sure doesn't look like it.........very disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Did you see his two goals vs Totenham?!? wow..

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rodgers was hardly raving... He basically said no comment. Depay would be a great signing

    ReplyDelete
  25. Aurier is on loan at PSG from Toulouse. Has only 9 apps though.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks. You're right. The comment counter is screwed. On another article it says 128 comments, but there actually 170+. I'm looking into it.

  27. Read a very interesting article on the old Liverpool transfer policy .
A player that Liverpool wanted to keep had to sign a new contract 2 years before the old one expired or run the risk of being sold .
When FSG bought Liverpool they scrapped that policy .?

Maybe somebody that knows more can comment !

  28. Memphis Depay to Liverpool and Danny Ings to MU ?
It seems as if MU is tracking Liverpool transfers this summer !

    ReplyDelete
  29. LFC must improve attacking areas next season...Alexandre Lacazette,Mauro Icardi, paulo Dybala,Lucino Vietto and Karem Benzema will be great finisher scorer.

I don't care anymore about Sterling issue. Up to him if want to stay or not but Mempis Depay and Jordan Ibe will become great winger or attacking for LFC next season.

Mario Balotelli just join LFC for selfie photo.

  30. this guy worth d reserve No7
Shirt...Lfc lets pull off ds stringe

  31. Jordan Ibe is the next big prospect for Liverpool and Brendan is bang on to sign him up to a new contract! Players are much more likely to come to LFC if we can show we are keeping hold of our bright young players and building for the future. And Brendan has indicated potential signings in the past and lost out to Chelsea so yet again he is bang on to keep his cards close! Jamie K you haven't got a clue!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree, he is now advocating that we will be challenging for the league next season. He should try and keep his own counsel (like all great managers of Liverpool did in the past) and concentrate on the current season where we are still within a remote chance of qualifying 4th. This is a typical Brendanism that promotes hostile reaction from his critics and sets himself up for a fall.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The rumours linking us to Depay reminds me of the Erikson saga where Agger was supposed to of had a word with him to join us and he inevitably didn't. This time apparently Kuyt and Zendan had a whisper in his ear. He would be great if arrives but looking at the potential squad for next season it looks to be severely lacking in experience.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The didn't nickname Yesil 'Gerd' for nothing! Hope he plays, and plays well!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Once again lads, don't hold your breath for this signing. This is exactly what happened with Konoplyanka and Mykhtaryan(spelling)... There were various reports claiming they wanted to join us over over teams and how a contract was already signed and medical too only for all of it to be complete fiction.

Depay would be foolish not to wait until the window opens and analyse every offer he gets. As such, I doubt it will happen.

Also wages might be a thing. Who is better Depay or Sterling?

Also, BR constant "this is the best place to develop and learn his trade" sounds like he is buying old cars, "pimping" them and then reselling them for a profit.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Don't hold your breath. When was the last time we won a transfer battle for a key in demand target?

    Coutinho- only us interested
    Suarez- us and Tottenham
    Sturridge- only us interested

    Etc...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Then again so was Kezman and Alves :0P

  38. I think Sterling proved often enough that his brain never gets out of first gear and that is why he acts this way. Ibe is different. More together

  39. I remember Henry at barcelona and Gerrard a couple of years ago saying they are still learning and developing. No matter how old you are or how good or rubbish a manager is, when you get on that field it is still a learning curve whether the increment is small or large. OK so Rogers babbles and I see your point to only a small extent.
Now I heard the liverpool way was to only shout to the top of the roof when we sign players, surely it is the football way to?
We dont want other teams aware of it and get egg on our chin, don`t want his club to raise his fee more after a firm interest. we don`t want the player to say yes and then embarras us and say no. simply not logical to expose initial talks.
Chelsea manager only spoke of calling fabregas after he signed him. Wenger on Sanchez, I could go on.
And even if Rogers did say he was going for him, from reading your post who is to say you would believe him.
I am more concerned about his comments about top players will join us if we are not in top 4 one week and they wont another week.Thats were he goes on,
Different players have to learn different systems, adjust to different players, different countries, different training sessions, different managers philosophies etc
Even me as an old man as a fan and a previous fantastic football.............lol. I am still learning lol
So my summary is yes liverpool have inquired and want this player but its far from over and let the media do there gossiping and post.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thats not fair. I think Ian has learnt alot and did well relatively last season, not excellent but ok. Moreno for 12 mil instead of 22. to name one. Ok not all but lets be fair.
We offered 5 mil more for Sanchez and offered him 10k a week more in wage. Not Ian fault he chose the gooners.

  41. There are only 2 types of players LFC should sign this summer

    (1) established young players with the potential to be world class such as Depay, Lacazette, Aurier & Vietto etc

    (2) experienced international class players with low transfer fees (or free transfer / loans) who can contribute for 2-3 seasons and take us to the next level (regular champions league & competing for the EPL) - this list would include the likes if Cech, Alves, Falcao or Ibrahimovic (if we fail to get Lacazette)..

    The 2nd

  42. Genuine post pending again........

  43. Origi is going to be a poor signing , trust me. I've looked up all his stars and he's got a very poor scoring record for an attacker. Unless of course he suddenly improved dramatically out the blue

  45. Talking about Skrtel's contract extension how good would it have been keeping Daniel Agger on the team this season??

    ReplyDelete
  46. I hope Klopp is consulting with them about which players he wants to keep. Better to start now than mid-way through the summer. Right?

Seriously though, Ibe is good, but hasn't really proven himself worthy of a huge contract. Honestly, Sterling has been good this season, but if he can get us a huge transfer fee from one of the Spanish clubs, let's get it and move Phillpe Coutinho over, then pay for a marquee striker (or two) since Mario and Lambert are useless, Borini is going away, and sturridge has been shown to be injury prone.

I joked about Klopp, but seriously, if BR is going away, and I think he is, we need to have a system in place, as opposed to the multiple ones we have now. Balotelli never really fit in as the type of player BR liked and could use effectively. He never really charges into the box, and waits for plays to set up rather than making them happen like Suarez used to. This season, playing Sterling up top, I never got it. Which might be why he didn't impress me as much this season as he did last year. But if this is how Sterling is going to be played in the future, sell him, buy players who fit that role.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't think I would want Falcao, based on what he's done this season. Ibrahimovic, I don't think he would ever come here.

I like Depay, and Lacazette with him, Sturridge and Origi would be lineup, even if it is a little light on experience and "world class" proven talent.
