Redknapp raves: 'Outstanding' £10m attacker LFC tried to sign is 'powerful' and 'technically good'

Prior to signing for Swansea City, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Bafetimbi Gomis, and according to ex-Red Jamie Redknapp, the French striker is proving to be a great signing for the Welsh club.

After watching Gomis score two goals against Hull over the weekend, Redknapp raved:

"He’s powerful and technically very good, and his two finishes against Hull were outstanding. When Wilfried Bony left, I feared for Swansea, but Gomis has come into his own"

In 2012, The Daily Mail claimed:

"Liverpool have stepped up their hunt for Bafetimbi Gomis after the player's representatives flew to London for a meeting last week. His representatives saw both Spurs and Liverpool [Reps]"

£10m-rated Gomis got two impressive goals at the weekend, but overall, his record for Swansea is nothing to write home about:

* 8 goals/3 assists in 32 apps.
* Goal every 4 games.
* Goal/assist every 2.9 games.

Did Liverpool miss out here? At first glance, Gomis' record is (comparatively) average, but he's outperforming Balotelli, Lambert, and Borini, so if Rodgers had signed him last summer, it's doubtful he'd have done any worse.

Plus, Swansea got Gomis for on a FREE transfer, so the deal would've been practically risk-free for Liverpool. Instead, Rodgers spent £20m on Balotelli and Lambert, who've contributed a combined total of THREE league goals all season. Pathetic.

On a related note: Wilfried Bony - a long-time Liverpool target - is hardly pulling up trees at Man City. With only one goal in seven appearances, the Ivorian appears to be struggling to make an impact. Plus, he's only started two games so far, whereas at Liverpool, he probably would've started every single game.

I'm sure Bony will come good, though. He is proven quality in the Premier League, and he'll deliver once he gets a run of games in the team.

  1. Radamel Falcao and now...Bafetimbi Gomis ?? STOP this rumours

  2. You should probably base your ratios on game minutes rather than actual full games. Gomis was only actually starting when Bony left. Before then, there were about 17 games where he was getting 5-20 minutes as a sub.

  3. Mehh...Balotelli, Borini and Lambert are all better than Gomis. Difference is the lack of continues game time. Gomis is an average striker. I don't like the way we handle our strikers but if we are not going to use them, sell them. Origi, Sturridge and one or two new striker for next season would be good.

  4. Dont fancy him at all but a fit Falcao was the best striker in the last decade anywhere on earth - simply awesome - I would love him to join us - recapture that form and then for him to stuff the Mancs. P S We can still make fourth and win the F A Cop

  5. I posted an article from Anfield Index called

"An Ulsterman’s View of our Ulsterman Brendan Rodgers"

Not sure if Jamie is going to make it public. It is quite long but worth a read...

  7. The relevant point here is regular playing time.

Gomis gets playing time and begins scoring more regularly.

Bony stops being regular playing time and struggles.

I wonder how borini, Lambert and ballotelli would've done of played week in week out. Borini did well in a poor Sunderland side but scored important goals against strong opposition.

Two up front worked last year and wonder if BR could try again. My only concern would be the weak full back positions. A fit Flanagan offered more defensive stability last year.

I know everyone goes on about the poor transfer windrow on this site.

So easy to be wise after the event but I wish we'd signed Clyne and Bertrand. That would have allowed us to have played 4 at the back of needs be. The four would be defensively strong enough to do so.

  8. Win our last 7 games and we'll finish in top 4. Question is can we regain our form quickly enough? Big ask and slim chance but win a few and momentum builds again. Need to get back to high intensity pressing game.

Next year I fancy us for top 4. New players will be more settled and although we may not attract world class we can attract top quality.

This widow will surely be about 3 or 4 quality players

  9. Here are some words for you to describe the summer transfer window that has passed.

Square pegs in round holes. Nothing more, nothing less.

    ReplyDelete
  10. In fairness to Gomis many of his appearances were as very late substitutes and he's only recently had a decent run of games. Most fans have seen his potential but, that said, he had until recently, frustrated even the very patient Swansea supporters.
What many, outside the club don't realise, is Wilfried took a season before he started scoring regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Henderson is very average at best. Easily replaceable.
His "stature" at Liverpool only reflects how standards have fallen at Anfield, not his 'ability'. I wouldn't fight to keep any of the cuurrent first team squad.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Henderson will be signing his contract at the end of the season. Its simply open season on Liverpool at the moment - the media know the Liverpool fans are frustrated and so mountains will be made of molehills until the seasons end.
Remember when Ibe came into the team, shortly afterwards there were stories about him being offered a new 5 year deal - completely fabricated but they were out there.
No disrespect to Hendo whom I like, but he aint gonna play for a bigger club than Liverpool and he bloody well knows it!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. No this is nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 120m is not a factor? Come on.. I dunno how anyone could be happy with the players brought in.bar Emre Can who could potentially be a very good player who else has performed? Markovic, lambert, balotelli, lallala, Lovren, Moreno? Then take a look what a proper manager like Diego Simeone can do with far less money spend and who has lost his best players almost every season!

    ReplyDelete
  15. The thing you seem to overlook is that during Rafa's reign there was one less 'big' club to complete with for the Champions League spaces. Man City due to their financial power suddenly had more money to spend and became a top four regular.

    ReplyDelete
  16. So you don't fancy Gomis but a fit Falcao gets you going?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dave Hendrick's? There is an article on TIA about why it would be mad to sack him. You didn't think that was worth reposting?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't think I need to read this to know it's a 'Rodgers out' type of article ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I do not visit TIA and have not seen anything on Anfield Index either about why Rodgers should stay.

    ReplyDelete
  20. AI has been lime these sites for a while. Hendrick's and the like have had to be quiet while we have been winning but come out with glee after we lose. It's not that their wools that's the issue more that they have too much invested in their own opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Honestly mate I listen to the podcasts. You probably wouldn't need to read much on their right now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gomis is not the answer, neither is Falcao as although there is no doubting his quality, and I like his attitude after the season he has just had there is no way I'd pay him £250k pw.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It does not seem like anyone ho writes for TIA is questioning why Rodgers actually deserves another season.

I have seen Articles on Anfield Index which are in favour of Rodgers so not sure what you are trying to get at.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agreed a lot of money and with hindsight we can say we could've and should've signed players x, y and z. On paper though all 3 had very good seasons last season and nobody was complaining then.

Falcao, Di Maria now that's a waste of money.

Sacking BR be a ridiculous decision based on how he's done and our lack of financial clout v current top 4.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know text speak is outlawed but....LOL!!

Signing Gomis will mean that we are no longer a top club.
We are linked with so many mediocre players.
Im really annoyed with how things are going lately...

    ReplyDelete
  27. After last seasons second place and 120m spent, were did you predict Liverpool would finish in the league this year? Do you think the owners splashed this 120m to finish outside the top 4? FSG are understanding but are ruthless at the same time. They would of set targets to BR and bank rolled him. If we compare this to van gaal, he would of been given a target of top 4 at all costs. He is on his way, once in the top 4 can you see him falling out of it or turning Utd into title challengers? BR employed the same tactic as Tottenham and has got similar results and now players are not signing, dressing room spats, increased disciplinary problems. Surely Suarez was not the defining reason for everything? Surely it was the manager who was the difference? Surely one player cant regress a team? BR football is quality to watch when it works but its results that count, philosophies are both successful and disastrous and at present the swingometer for BR's philosophy is UNSURE. Next year will be the most important year for BR a year that will define this philosophy, I think he deserves to find the answer to wether, his football is successful or not!

    ReplyDelete
  28. And what about balotelli Moreno lambert aswell? He needs to go...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Bad enough I have to read your long-winded Rodgers out posts without subjecting myself to any more of it

    ReplyDelete
  30. In the PL he scored against ManU in August the next goal was in late October, then mid November - so Wilf scored in 3 out of 15 League games from August to the end of December!
His 'better than a goal every other game' ended in August after the goal v ManU and 3 in two routs of Malmo and Ploiesti.
He scored a few in League, FA and Europa cups.
I supported Bony from day one, when many were calling him lazy and useless, so no mythologising on my part.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks mate, might give those a go.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gomis 's leopard crawl celebration after his 1 goal put me off hiM. !!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Agreed, Still i think LIverpool needs to pay him 100p/w to bring some sort of stability to the club before the transfer window opens .

    ReplyDelete
  34. Don't think too much of Gomis to be honest. He has a bit of skill and scores some pretty goals but he's certainly not a striker who worries me when we play Swansea. Not for us.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nope nope nope...enough of considering average players.

    ReplyDelete
  36. No doubt as he comes from the same province he must have a special insight that the rest of us can only dream of.

I will certainly put this on my list of must read articles just below the one on how to crochet a tea cosy from dog hairs.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah in the good times we get pro Rodgers and. In the bad we get against. It tends to be the same people. Just think there is an unintelligent desire to hold on to certain theories rather than having ongoing thoughts based more on facts rather than cherry picked facts. Basically lack of objectivity amongst some of their contributors.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Tends to be the same people. Do the people on the podcasts write the articles on Anfield Index?

There are many different people/fans, coaches etc who write the articles on Anfield Index.

Go find one article on there written by Dave Hendrick.

On TIA all you see are articles of praise for Rodgers. Where is the objectivity?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well go read it anyway then ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I read it and now feel I missed out by not reading the one on tea cosies

I agree that BR talks BS most of the time but that does not make him a bad manager. I think he deserves and will get another year to show what he can do with this young side .

    ReplyDelete
  41. You do have a lovely, glossy coat, and I'm in need of a tea cosy. When you learn, maybe you'll knit me one? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Other warmers are available

    ReplyDelete
  43. You would need an open mind first my good man... I know we have open minds, but do they?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Willy warmer for me mate, and be generous when it comes to the proportions...

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's funny really, 2 weeks ago when top 4 looked on, this connections would have been sneered at, especially by our host... Now, and especially since we've been told to expect more of the same from the transfer window, cases will be made for the once, not a chancers...

Instead of plowing money we need into an old Gomis, we can get a young up an coming future England International in Ings... But for some, the fact he plays for Burnely right now, means he'll never be good enough for LFC....

If we don't make the top 4, we need to take a serius look at our transfer targets, because there are players out there, that are perfect for LFC that won't be demanding CL yet, and won't cost us the earth.... We just need to be pro-active in our approach, maybe alittle of the personnal touch from Brendan would be advised....

    "Square holes in round holes"

    what does that even mean?

Sterling said himself he wants to play furtenr forward and really enjoyed playing up front.

Emre Can has so far done better in defense then midfeild, him being there until last two weeks bought us solidity.
we broke all time away clean sheet record at liverpool. his composure is so important in the defense in recent weeks

Markovic and Ibe initially done their best jobs at wing back , Markovic has not evenough attacking ability to play in front 3 .

I would only object to Hendo moving to wingback otherwise
    what is your point?
And do not avoid the question?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nevergonnacrackthecode12:44 pm, April 07, 2015

The thing about Ings is he is a

ONE SEASON WONDER at a high level

who is not playing at A BIG CLUB

    look at Lovren,Carroll,Adam,Downing, Lallana ,

    same

    ReplyDelete
  48. Give it to him... He is one of the most important players in the team, and is worth easily 2/3 of what Sturridge is on....

    ReplyDelete
  49. he buys players to stop other teams getting them, so dont tell me how great he is.

Also do you Expect us to compete with Chelsea and City. We were playing great fooball prior to the Swansea game, at least we won ugly at Swans, but our form has dropped SINCE.
This happens in football, do you want to sack the manager everytime we lose. Rodgers is on a hiding to nothing with you.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Look at Suarez... Dalgleish, Barnes, Rush, Kuyt, I could go on and on, but whats the point....

    ReplyDelete
  51. Totally agree, he's seen how Suarez held us to ransom and believes he can do the same. What he hasn't realised is he's not in the same league. Get rid before any other young talent think they can behave the same way as him. Proper rotten apple. Feel sorry for BR cos he's invested a lot of trust and time in his development and the kids just dumping on him but live n learn. Suarez did it to kenny, beckham did it to Ferguson.

    ReplyDelete
  52. In short, I don't want anyone playing for us that doesn't want to play for us. Anyone who's looking at us like "this is just a job to me" I don't want anywhere near the team.I'd rather play Borini than Sterling, at least he wanted to stay and fight for his place.

    ReplyDelete
  53. How can you know he's a one season wonder?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sorry forgot you could tell the future..

    ReplyDelete
  55. That is a fact. He can go or is it a "must go"

    ReplyDelete
  56. Good players are not impressed by BR and in most cases chose other clubs instead.

    ReplyDelete
  57. You imply that BR was then genius which i totally disagree. The difference was Suarez not BR.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't think the gross overpraise is enough.

Might have to be twice daily or dare-I-say thrice daily

    ReplyDelete
  59. So what you're saying is we should let him go to another club, perform well there, and then pay 25M to get him. Sounds good to me.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Part of me actually wants Rodgers to stick just out of spite to Logan.

    ReplyDelete
  61. None of the players we bought (except Can and Moreno) effectively filled the needs of the squad. We needed a goalscorer, instead we got Balo and Lambo. We needed a consistent CB, instead we got Lovren. We needed goal scoring AM, instead we got Lallana and Markovic. We needed a new RB to replace Johnson, and we didn't even get one.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Your just sad.

    ReplyDelete
  63. At 3m and 22 years it's still a good deal .

    ReplyDelete
  64. Next year is going to be real tough.
Man City are going to spend big this summer.
plus Man U will spend another 150m.

    ReplyDelete
  65. the problem we have is that if we are gonna persist with rogers we are going to have to pay more than we can afford to keep players because i dont think he has the charisma to keep them .....we have to balance the books

    ReplyDelete
  66. i dont know what he has officially been offered ..but i dont blame him for refusing 80 if borini is on 90

    ReplyDelete
  67. 100 g as club captain seems about right
