Confirmed: Liverpool 'interested' in signing 'explosive' £36k-a-week Brazilian star. Offer already made in November

Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato recently claimed that Liverpool were close to agreeing a deal for Fiorentina goalkeeper Norberto Murara Neto (aka 'Neto'), and the Brazilian's Agent has now officially confirmed Liverpool's interest.

On Tuesday, Neto's agent told reporters:

“There are several clubs interested [in signing Neto], even abroad such as Liverpool in England, PSG in France and Real Madrid in Spain.”

In November, Tutto Mercato claimed that:

* Liverpool offered Neto €1.9m a year contract (£36k per week)
* The Reds outbid Roma, who offered €1.6m.

Soon aftter, TMW further claimed:

* Liverpool still want Neto despite the Simon Mignolet's recent good form.
* Contact with Liverpool is 'continuing', and a decision is expected 'soon'.

In January,, Fiorentina released a statement confirming that Neto is leaving the club:

"Neto today officially informed the club of his intention not to prolong his contract with the Viola. The decision is definitive [and] his desire [is] to be free to decide his own future."

Neto's Stats:

* 89 goals conceded in 87 games.
* Concedes 1.02 goals per game.
* Clean Sheets: 31 (36% - 1 every 2.8 games)
* This season: 22 goals conceded in 24 games.
* 0.9 goals conceded per game.
* 10 clean sheets (42% - 1 every 2.4 games)

Neto's record for Fiorentina is quite impressive, but over his career, his goals-conceded per-game ratio is not the greatest. However, last season, he conceded fewer goals (51 in 49 games) than Mignolet (53 in 40 games), so at a basic level, the Brazilian is clearly an upgrade.

Former Fiorentina goalkeeper Sébastien Frey certainly believes that Neto is a top-class 'keeper. In an interview earlier this year, he raved:

“I trained for a few months with Neto and he his is naturally explosive, and I think the Italian school helped him grow even more. He can become one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A.”

Is Neto the answer, or should Liverpool try and sign a proven, world-class goalkeeper (like Petr Cech, for example, who is currently being linked with a move to Anfield)?

I'd personally prefer to see a recognised top-class 'keeper come in. Liverpool shouldn't mess around here - despite his improved form, Mignolet still needs to be replaced, not challenged (IMO).

Neto is a mid-level stopper; he's never played for Brazil, and he appears to be on a similar level to Mignolet. Liverpool need a very clear upgrade, and I doubt Neto is the answer.

If the story has substance, though, it looks like Rodgers' is planning to bring in someone to merely challenge Mignolet, rather than replace him.

  1. Cech, Vietto, Depay, Song and Aurier would represent great business in the summer, and moving some deadwood, and could be a catalyst for a great season ahead. Cech is a bit far fetched but if we can get him then great. Vietto is the perfect striker to play in our system with great pressing and a lethal finish. Depay is going places that's for sure so we should snap him up now before Utd does. Alex Song would provide great midfield cover and real bite in the centre with a great passing range. Aurier isn't playing much for PSG and he is a great attacking fullback who doesn't neglect his defensive duties, he has a good goal scoring record too.

What are your opinions guys? Any of these players appeal to you?

  3. Not that you should buy a player just on stats but since Christmas I doubt there has been a better keeper that Mignolet.

Also most top keepers are already playing for a top team so won't move to Liverpool, so we need to look at promising keepers who are playing for smaller teams but their stats will look worse.

I don't know if Neto is the answer but Cech won't come to Liverpool.

  6. You mean keeping hold of the ball with a lack of penetrstion? Yes sterile domination is something this side doesn't always do well but it would we have done it effective at times this season. It does need accurate passing and players who don't fall apart like Lovren but having many strings to a now is useful. Expecially when introducing lots of new playees to new ideas such as the beginning of his time at Liverpool and this season when so many were signed.

  7. Go compare the first half of Rodgers debut season with the first half of this season. Mirror image. In fact, results were worse. We had our worst start to a season in like half a century this time round.

This thing about players having to adapt to a pressing system is BS because as soon as Rodgers changed the system the new players immediately started performing. No bedding i n time was needed to adapt to the pressing system.

If Rodgers had to go back to his poor tiki taka system which he deployed start of this season right now then the team is going to struggle like it did at the start of the season. 1 + 1 = 2.

    Asmir Begovic for me

Asmir Begovic is the best keeper in the league bar Courtois,De Gea and Lloris.
He is Bosnian, and Bosnia are producing more talent look at Pjanic and Dzeko
we are apparently signing pjanic as well .
So if we get Pjanic and Begovic all future Bosnians will want to join LFC

Also we should sign Stefan Jovetic who is leaving Manchester City.
15M +Jovetic and City can have Raheem Sterling, it is a good swap deal for me.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. It's a funny one, because even Aston Villa (respect to their history) can sign a rising La Liga star like Carles Gil because of their money, yet they can't match a similarly-placed Spanish team for pure skill and tactical nous. I guess we (they? I'm from way further south) are still struggling to break the strongman cocoon.

  26. Yes they started performing as they do this thing you don't see called training. They have meeting's and individual guided tactical advice. When they switched Rodgers was convinced they could do it effectively. Pressing needs to be done economically. Cleverly. If not you create lots of gaps and waste energy. So Rodgers building the plane while flying it may mean that the attempt at sterile domination is what is done in the meantime and both seasons you refer to that we had without a proper preseason bares that out. So sorry bud your

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well no. Because they do this thing you don't see called training. When the change of system happened the pkayers were more settled. They had had training on pressing effectively and in packs. If you don't have everyone on the same page when you are trying to press you leave open lots of space and waste energy. Both seasons you refer to not only was it necessary to have lots of new pkayers learn these new things but also there was barely any preseason. Rodgers may see sterile domination as a way of getting results whilst everyone gets up to speed. So sorry you wrong or at least you have no idea if you are right or not. My theory makes more sense than yours were a certain tactic was used in a third of Rodgers whole time at the club. So your adding 2+2 and getting 8

“I needed to make decisions that would allow us to get back to somewhere near what we had been and the transformation of the team, with everyone talking about the system and how dynamic it is, has been good to see. I should have done it earlier!”

That does not for one second suggest that Rodgers was even planning on changing. He had no choice but to.

    From the same article

“After that Palace game I felt that it doesn’t matter how much support you have, the team is not functioning and it could not go on really,” the Liverpool manager says. “But I certainly wasn’t going to roll over and die. I will always fight for my life. I love it here and I want to be successful here.

If Rodgers did not decide to make the change he would have been a dead man walking.

If Rodgers changes back now to the way we played at the start of the season then we will be back to square one where teams flatten us.

So what is he going to do now that the opposition have found us out? Is he going to stick to the current system, change back to tiki taka, play a direct style like we did last season or try something else? We shall see. May the angels watch over us if he goes back to the tiki take i.e. patient, slow build up style of play which saw us play some of the most boring football ever this season.

  40. Comolli was mostly in charge of transfers, Kenny did not report to him. Rodgers mentioned after he took the job that he wanted full control of all the footballing aspects at the club which suggested that FSG were looking to have someone who Rodgers would need to report to and follow instructions meaning all he would be is the head coach.

    I never based on nationality.
I just believe it is important to invest in a nation like Rafa did with Spain. That is a big reason why Torres joined because Liverpool were popular in Spain with Alonso,Arbeloa,Reina and previously Morienties and Garcia.

Germany is where the talent mainly lies now, if we brang in Klopp and he brang in Reus and a few other Germans maybe Bedner then the big German stars will join the new Mullers ,Goetzes etc

Imagine Klopp coming in and bringing Reus,Goetze,Bedner, and Hummels

But i am not saying only buy German players if there is a palyer like Suarez available a uruguayn ripping a league up by himself then fine,
The problem is we are investing in Englsih market with players like Lallana and England do not produce many talents and when they do like Kane or Hart , Spurs and City will never sell to us,

Raheem Sterling is ;leaving and will join either Manchester City or Arsenal.
Manchester City will be where lfc will want to sell him to rather then Arsenal , but Sterling has close ties with London. I personally believe ARsenal will be his destination.
But i would force him to City ,we cannot lose to Arsenal two windows in a row.
Plus under no circumstance should we accept Walcott as part of any deal.

The flood gates opened when Suarez left now all our best players will leave , Neymars comment on Coutinho are very suspicious how come he never comments on Oscar or Willian. It is obviously the tapping up technique Barca are famous for using it with mascheranoa nd Fabregas.

  51. We played the diamond a few times and got torn apart. It was obvious we couldn't play that same way anymore, as in shape due to.personnel. That he tried the other formations that also didn't work due to movement of forwards and legs of defensive midfielders. That isn't anything to do with the way we were.trying.g to keep the ball or press other than ways of doing it in new shape. Was he not talking about that?

This is all FSG fault they have no ambition , a top 4 finish is all they care about. If Fsg cared they would have after Sanchez done all tehy could to sign Cavani or Falcao.
FSG out as well as Rodgers we need Arab owners we need a Sheik any Sheik apart from Shamsy.

  54. I think as fans we should have a right to talk about how we view articles as well asthenia article themselves. How things are presented is just as important as content. The source even more important. It is very frustrating for me and seemingly for you to see so many easily led people believing some nonsense notions produced to create controversy as the daily mail does so often. Jaime can be awfully sensitive for someone who runs a site.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Jaimie, how can you not understand the transfer policy that Liverpool are taking. They can't compete with the likes of City, Chelsea, Utd and the Spanish Top 2 in terms of wages and transfer fees, so going for proven top class strikers is out. LFC just don't stand a chance in that market.
They are clearly aware of this and don't intend on wasting their time on these kind of unrealistic targets. So then how do they attract top class talent. You do it from a young age and develop them themselves in the frame of someone like Porto who produce a lot of top class talent.
That is the reason behind the young unproven players. If they let someone else buy them and develop them and in five years time they are rated at say £50 million the question then would be why didn't we buy them when they were £15 mill. That is the nature of the position LFC are in and something we have to accept at this stage.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Can you recall how utterly shite we were first half of this season. All we would do is pass the ball back to Mignolet. No wonder he was in nomansland first half of the season. Pressing was non existent. 'Death by football' as Rodgers likes to call it was the order of the day.

He clearly states the team was not functioning and that should have changed it earlier. At least manned up by saying that but clearly he is far to arrogant otherwise we would not have had to play catch up that late in the season.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Nevergonnacrackthecode1:28 pm, April 01, 2015

Neymar is also Oscars friend, you got to admit with Iniesta form they will look at Coutinho cause he si so good perfect for Barca.
I think he will be here next season due to the ban but the year after?
If Liverpool do not buy big stars this year it will be hard to recover in next 5 years.
Arsenal is not bigger then Lfc just our better players being linked with them shows what FSG has done, we should ahve got Sanchez,if he wants to live in London give him a helicopter like Owen.
That was the lost battle , the only way to recover is win the FA cup and finish above them.
If we win this week we are only 3 points behind with only chelsea left as a hard game.

I know we all hate Chelsea and Man united i do not know which order .
But the team that has undermined us most is Arsenal.:

First with Luis Suarez when tehy tried to take him and insult us.
    Then beating us to Sanchez
    Now trying to take Sterling

The only way for us to stop them is finish above them
then win the Fa cup ahead of them.
Then refuse to sell Sterling to them,

Arsenal is our rivals not Man united right now , which is ridicolous because arsenal have only 0 cl we have 5. But that is how it is.

  82. FSG have turned us from a club about to go under and made us financially stable. While also breaking ground on expanding the temple of Anfield and not having to do a stadium share with the blue side. They have found a young, aggressive, players coach that has taken us back to promised land of CL and has us in the brink of making it back. My guess is you know very little about their ownership of the Boston Red Sox, but they are building LFC back up in the almost the exact same manner. Red Sox had not won a championship in almost 90 years before FSG took control. They start at the foundation making the financial end stable and growing. They also find young management that provide longevity and help stabilize success. Look at SAF at ManUre as an example of what longevity can do, cause that last year that team was pretty pathetic but walked out with league easily. They then try to take a fairly balanced look between youth and senior players. They invest more heavily in youth to again try and create longevity, while trying to grab reasonable deals for senior players and not being taken to town by outrageous demands that could hamper growth financially. But after talking care of finances and infrastructure they have no problem busting the bank to get to end players. It may not happen tell the Anfield project is completed but I wouldn't be surprised if there is heavy investment into players this summer.

BR is young and learning, maybe he held back on changes a little late this year, but I honestly believe we will still make top 4 this year.

People tend to forgot this is banana peel time of year for Arsenal. They are second at this point last year and barely scraped out 4th by seasons end. If we find a way to win this weekend this could be the straw that breaks the camels back and end there 17yr run for CL.

  89. I had the blessing to watch Netherlands play spain this summer first hand. Amazing. I'm an avid dutch, Ajax, fan despite being born and raised in USA. My dad was my coach for a long time and invested a lot of time in learning the Ajax youth development system seeing as it is probably the program with the greatest longevity of producing top end talent. Its remarkable the number of pure world class players the dutch nation produces with such little population comparatively.

Anyways Depay is an amazing talent that I hope we invest in, but I want to get people's opinion on Davy Klassen. Guy is being spun off in the Ajax and dutch system as the next Bergkamp, who is my favorite player of all time. I have watched some of him and he is very clinical finisher with good range and poaching ability. I haven't seen the vision or passing range of bergkamp but I like him and think he would also be a great signing.

Jaimie always says you can't have enough brazilians, well I feel the same way about the Dutch. Combining the two I think is an even better idea.

  96. Presuming to know more than you actually do is the only arrogance I see here.

  97. Part of the reason for how bad we were was personnel. Another discussion had many times. Lovren passes back to keeper far too often and otbis also Sister's safe bet. Static forwards was another issue. We needed a different strategy but we needed better personnel. That was a huge problem of Rodgers. Who he kept picking but I have no doubt he wasn't asking them to keep putting Mignolet under pressure. There was a lack of intelligence, guile and technical ability in some areas of the pitch. That isn't death by football it is suicide by football. That is not how he wants us to play. We didn't use the keeper so much when he firsr arrived. Something had to change but it was as much personnel as anything. He is probably too arrogant to admit that.

  98. To blame the likes of Lovren for how bad the WHOLE team played is taking things to far IMO.

We were rubbish from GK, to defence, to midfield to attack. There cannot be any excuses here. Not one single aspect of our game was working properly. Who picks the team? Who deploys the tactics? Who gives out the instructions? Our first half of this season was purely based on possession football. We were the most boring team to watch.

Our midfield was overrun game after game. Our defence was pinned back minute after minute. Our attack had no clue what to do with the ball. We were waiting for teams to score against us which is exactly what happened.

If you have a system that clearly is not working WHICH IS THERE FOR EVERYONE TOO SEE which is down to instructions from the manager and that system is persisted with game after game after game then who needs to take the blame?

  100. Average players will keep flooding Anfield every summer unless the average manager is root out or give him another summer? We should keep Ilori for further progress.

  101. He hasn't really declined much this season, except for after the AFCON cup. Still, it's not like he's a striker or a winger, where age affects you as you start to get older. He can bring experience to the squad, which is highly needed right now. I still think he has maybe 3 more years to him, which is a fair amount

  102. Llori has not been given a chance, why because this imposter of a manager, he has so much to answer for.......totally no Respect.

Haha I loved your post until you said sell Sterling for 70m :/

We will be lucky if we get 50 for him and that would most likely be City which would mean strengthening our rivals..

I agree with Vietto, Depay, Anderson all being good options. I think we need to have 2 plans -

PLAN 1 - Strengthen with Sterling. Where we actually need 2 strikers - Keeping DS and Sterling assumed. One back up striker - Ings is kinda a given, English and cheap. And one classy striker - my list would be Lacazette, Morata, and can't think of anyone else right now.. Yeah they would be expensive but we should have income from player sales hopefully.

Plan 2 - Strengthen and Sell Sterling-
Keeping DS, Ings back up and another striking option.

Need a winger/striker/cam hybrid to come in.
Depay or Firmino to me would be great replacements. If Pedro is really available from Barca I think he could really bring some class to our team.

If Real would include Isco and Illa in a Sterling swap they can have him tomorrow.. Even if it was just Isco.. Isco and Coutinho would make Emile Hesky look like a god..
