Transfer Breakthrough: Liverpool make contact with 'special' €25m goal-machine who prefers LFC move

Speculation over a possible Liverpool move Memphis Depay continues to intensify, with new reports claiming that FSG have approved Rodgers' pursuit of the coveted attacker, who has allegedly been pursued by the Reds for the last 18 months.

Last week, PSV Eindhoven director Marcel Brands confirmed that Depay 'will leave' this summer, and today, The Mirror claims that:

* FSG will 'allow' Rodgers to pursue Depay this summer.

* PSV have granted Liverpool 'permission to speak with Depay'.

* Liverpool have made 'preliminary contact' with the prolific 21-year old.
* The Dutch giants have 'told' Liverpool that the minimum fee is €25m [£18m]

This all sounds very exciting, but it's all predicated on the idea that Rodgers will keep his job this summer, and there are no guarantees that will happen.

If the Reds finish the season poorly, and fail to qualify for the Champions League, FSG will be under intense pressure to replace the manager, and whoever comes in may have a different notion entirely of who the club should sign.

Quite why any manager would *not* want to sign Depay is anyone's guess, though. He's on fire for PSV this season, and for such a young player, his goals/assist record is formidable (albeit in a lesser league):

* 26 goals/6 assists in 37 appearances.
* Goal every 1.4 games (1 every 121 mins)
* Goal/Assist every 1.1 games (1 every 95 mins)

Recent reports also claim that Depay prefers a move to Liverpool over Manchester United, so it'll be interesting to see how this rumour plays out.

One thing's for sure: if Liverpool sign Depay, and Divock Origi stays at Anfield next season, Daniel Sturridge's first-team place will come under intense pressure, and he'll have to fight to retain his status as the club's number-one striker.

I'm a huge fan of Sturridge, but this is is exactly what needs to happen. Liverpool cannot rely on him in any way, shape, or form, and in my view, the club has to go into next season with Sturridge as a back-up plan, not an integral part of the first team.

It's harsh, but the manager cannot build a team around a player who is constantly injured. It may mean Sturridge falling down the pecking order, but so be it. The team comes first, not the individual, and Liverpool can't afford to have another season where the club's main striker is on the sidelines 80% of the time.

  1. First comment. Such pressure.

    SIGN HIM!

    ...damn.

  2. He'll end up at United. They also keen on him and with a dutchman at the helm, it makes more sense. Rodgers aint exactly theee manager that players seek to play for.

  3. I agree with everything you say, but surely LVG plus the lure of Champions League football means it's unlikely he'll choose Liverpool. I hope I'm wrong, but pursuing him feels like a waste of time which will culminate in another embarrassing snub..

  4. Regarding the Daniel situation if we sign him- that is exactly what he needs, someone to do the job if he is out so we don't rush him, and someone to play with when he returns. And his performances will elect him in the starting 11 whenever he is fit, no problem. It will actually prolong his career and his minutes per season.
And regarding Depay, as Bob eloquently said below SIGN HIM!

  5. Actually I am keen to hear from the 8% that are voting no to Depay... Why?

  6. Was curious about that as well.

  7. I am inclined to think that Rogers won't be here next season if we don't get CL, and if we do- that might be enough to land Depay..

  8. I guess the drinks are going to be on me, then ;-)

  9. Are you familiar with NGCTC? When he explains why something you end up knowing less. Consider those who voted no as a bunch of NGCTCs.

  10. I once forgot how to do my job for one whole week after talking to NGCtC. I showed my boss the conversation, and he gave me one month off with pay.

  11. What is your job, if you don't mind me asking?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I voted yes because you have to try and sign players like this, but United is the obvious choice for him, and I think his interest in Liverpool will be his agent trying to make United want him (£££) more.

  13. Wow....

You reckon that could work with the missus...? or the taxman....?

  17. There's no way on earth we're going to sing him. When was the last time we signed someone that someone else was going after?

We couldn't even sign Willian and Konoplyanka even though we made contact first. Making contact first makes absolutely no different to Liverpool who are extremely poor in getting in their prime targets.

I think United will sign him. And well probably sing someone like Konoplyanka and tell everyone that was our main target anyway.

  29. Although i really rate Depay do we need more wide players when we need to spend up on the central midfield areas and a cf type the club wont have a lot to spend.
Also they are chasing Konoplyanka on a free i have my doubts on this one.

  32. You know what really angers me? This guy's talent has been obvious for two years now. Just like Yourie Thielemans at Anderlecht or Tomas Meunier at Brugge. Our scouting in the low countries is just appaling and with the amount of talent that comes out of the Netherlands and Belgium that is an absolute joke. Especially considering the fact that every kid in Holland is taught to play in the way we want to play.

    ReplyDelete
  33. the reports claiming Depay would prefer a move to Liverpool just state that we have been monitoring him longer than MU, so i fail to understand why he would prefer LFC over MU when the latter has CL football to propose, and LVG (who gave him his international debut) is running the team.

I'd be really impressed and happy if he come though

    ReplyDelete
  34. In other news, Skrtel is going nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  35. the difference bewtween these countries and Liverpool is that they offer play time to youngster at the highest level, while we send them on loan at championships club.
Just look at Southampton giving plenty of time to youngster, even at Liverpool when we did (Sterling, Ibe, Flanno) it worked quite well.

Maybe Liverpool should reward young player playing well at the academy with some apparence in the cups and minutes in the PL, but we'd need to not have a squad filled with unnecessary players for that to be easier.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Man United have Van Gaal, manager with pull + manages his national team. The only way I see this happening is if we enter top 4 + bid higher and offer more.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's what Barcelona have been doing for decades. Sure they spend 75 million on Suarez but for the last 10 years, which includes three Champions League final appearances, they have been competing with a team built around academy players. The 2011 final they started with 7! academy players. IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL. No cup or final minutes stuff. The ultimate football match, they started with 7 academy players. Look at the players we have at the club already, Mignolet is coming into his own. We have Coutinho, Henderson, Ibe, Moreno and Flanagan. Bring in three top top players in the summer to complement them or even just two who will truly make a difference and rely on our academy for the other positions.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Think when mentioning the whole why would he choose LFC over MUFC debate people are slightly overlooking the fact that Man U have two players in Mata & Di Maria who recently cost over 100 mil between them. We on the other hand have probably Coutinho, Lallana (regularly injured) & sterling (who may well be leaving. If you want first team football straight away, then LFC's a much better bet. Also, are United's money men gonna sanction a move for a player in a position where they have heavily invested already, when they arguably need strikers, central midfielders & defenders far more?

Then it just comes down to would he move to a club without champions league football, and if he wants a move, which it sounds like he does, and none of the other top clubs are currently going for him, which again doesn't sound like the case, we're his only choice...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hopefully it won't happen like previous season where all transfer target decide to jump ship at the last minute

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hope we get to see a few young players in the last few games. Who knows if Wilson or Sinclair perform in the first team we might not even need depay...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Lets not KID OURSELVES - Going to Man U - Next question please = AT LEAST DAILY POST ANSWERED BIG QUESTION - BR WILL BE STAYING - but boy he needs to have learnt some lessons - LETS DUMP STERLING FOR STARTERS

  42. Some think because Memphis Depay has played under Van Gaal it's a plus for Man Utd.I actually think that works in Liverpool's favour.Depay has first-hand experience of working under a manager that rules with an Iron fist. There have been successful examples of managers who work a similar way like SAF or Jose Mourinho, but they seem more personable at times.LVG is stuck on dictator mode 24/7.
Did you catch his post match interview after the Chelsea match? Louis Van Gaal is so harsh and abrasive. No wonder he's fallen out with so many people down the years.I wouldn't want to deal with him everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't know. I haven't been impressed with Starters lately.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not sure FSG will give two shites what we all think as far as Brendan keeping or losing his job... I personally think they'll keep him.... And if they are to keep him, they have to back him.... Simple....They have to know that we need to get seriuos players through the door this summer to give Brendan a fair chance.... I expect alot of ............and maybe a little trying to be stingy, followed by alot of... misery. But I hope and pray I'm wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Depay's a good player, but he won't be the second coming. He can be inconsistent, he's one of those pacy guys that trick themselves as often as the opposition, and while he can be alarmingly quick and sharp, he can also look a bit dopey at times. Reminds me of Bale, in the way sometimes his decision-making seems a bit skewed, but he doesn't have Bale's incredible physique. Yeah, good player, would complement our existing options well.

Will he sign for us? Will he bollocks. He'll be off to join the orange revolution at Man Utd.

  51. Helen Davies of the Liverpool Echo confirmed the committee's decision to allow Liverpool to install a "curtain of fine mesh" around one of the side's training pitches. The club fear "confidential team details leaking out before matches," a worry brought on by people filming sessions by standing on wheelie bins to get profitable vantage points.
