Massive Deal: 'Fantastic' £20m attacker demands £5.2m-a-year to sign Liverpool contract. Rip-off?

Over the last two years, Jordan Henderson is one of Liverpool's most improved players, but like Raheem Sterling, his contract talks have seemingly hit the skids, and it's reportedly going to take a massive offer to convince LFC's 'fantastic' vice-captain to stay at Anfield.

According to the Daily Mail today:

* Henderson [Cost: £20m] has rejected a five-year deal worth £80,000 per week.

* He wants £100k-a-week before committing his long-term future.

In a recent interview, Henderson claimed that there's no issue about signing a new deal. He told reporters:

"I love playing football for Liverpool and I want to be there for many years. In terms of my contract, I think everybody else will make a big deal of it but for me it's just letting my agent and the club deal with it and whenever it gets sorted, it gets sorted"

According to the Liverpool Echo, Sterling wants £150k-a-week, which is greed of the highest order, but in comparison:

* Henderson's alleged demand is far more reasonable, and arguably more deserved.

* There's a difference between holding the club to ransom as a result of sheer greed, and requesting a figure commensurate with status, ability, and impact.

* £100k is still an obscene amount of money, but it's an easier figure to justify given Henderson's importance to Liverpool over the last two years.

* Henderson is older than Sterling, and is probably Liverpool's next captain, so it's reasonable for him to expect a higher wage.

* Why should Sterling be paid more than Henderson? If Liverpool give-in to Sterling's demands, and end up paying him more than Hendo, it will set a negative precedent, and inevitably cause a problem in the squad.

* The club has also made a rod for its own back. If FSG give-in to Sterling's ridiculous demands, then Hendo will have every right to demand parity. I'm not saying he (or anyone at LFC) deserves such ludicrous salaries, but as an older, more experienced player AND Liverpool's probable next captain, why should Hendo be paid less?

There's a clear difference between the Henderson and Sterling contract situations:

* After months of being sickeningly deified by Rodgers, pundits, and the fanbase, Sterling's ego is out of control. He's drunk on his own hype, driven by opportunist greed, and recently disrespected the club by conducting an unprofessional, unauthorised interview, which was arguably motivated by blatant self-interest.

* Henderson has allegedly requested a comparatively fair pay-rise, commensurate with ability, improvement, impact, and experience. He's not demanding a figure that's grossly underserved, or outside Liverpool's salary structure (Gerrard, Suarez, Johnson et al are/were on more), and he's handled himself in a professional manner at all times.

Liverpool should give Henderson what he wants, and tell Sterling to shove it, and if that means selling him to the highest bidder, then so be it.

In my view, Sterling should not be Liverpool's highest earner; he's simply not worth it, and under no circumstance should be be paid more than Henderson, Sturridge, or even Coutinho.

  2. Henderson is our present and future

  3. IMO what it will prove if Henderson does decide to leave is that we will become a feeder club. The likes of Coutinho and Ibe will be next as they can go elsewhere and win trophies and earn more.

Quite disturbing if you had to ask me.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Let them all leave. Who cares? It doesn't mean Liverpool are a 'feeder club', it means LFC will not tolerate mercenaries and/or players motivated by greed, and that's fine with me.

The club needs to draw a line in the sand, and if that means Liverpool have to lose players to save its soul, then so be it.

The positive is if the likes of Sterling, Henderson etc leave, the Reds will get big money fees.

Then, mercenaries will steer clear of Liverpool as they know they won't be able to fleece the club, which means more players will arrive/develop who are willing to operate within the wage structure.

I have no fears whatsoever about the future. I couldn't care less if Henderson, Sterling, Sturridge, or indeed any of Liverpool's current players leave.

    Liverpool always survive.

  5. Jaimie, Suarez left. Who did we bring in with the money we got for him?

    ReplyDelete
  6. "players will arrive/develop who are willing to operate within the wage structure"

    Well... yes. Until they aren't

    ReplyDelete
  7. Don't ask me stupid questions please; just say what you mean: 'Suarez left, and Liverpool signed X, Y and Z with the money'. Try making an actual argument instead of posing pointless questions.

  8. I agree with a lot of what you're saying but at the end of the day if we cannot match other clubs wages the best players will always move on to bigger paying clubs.on the other hand they are right (imo) not to pay players like sterling more than 100k when he hasn't justified it.where as the likes of gerrard or torres in their prime were worth paying the big bucks too.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Not necessarily. Right now, the culture is all wrong at LFC. The gross overpraise of players is out of control, and players have all the power. Rodgers has created this problem; he sets the example, and he's deified players to the extent that it's actually affecting Liverpool's bargaining position in contract negotiations.

This needs to change, and it will take a few years, but there has to be (IMO) a top-down change in attitude. Stop overpraising players; make it clear that Liverpool will not be held to ransom on contracts, and re-establish the club's power over players and agents.

After a few years of this approach, Liverpool will develop a reputation for being tough on mercenaries, and that will hopefully discourage the Sterlings of the future from trying to hold the club to ransom.

Some players will leave in the meantime when they realise they can't gets astronomical salaries, but so be it.

Liverpool basically need a manager with Benitez's approach to players: fair but firm; totally uninterested in ego massage, and constantly calling for continuous improvement, irrespective of achievement.

  10. Which of the players we signed at the start of the season when we had a crap load of money that was spent are on the same level as Henderson and Sterling?

Now if we let Hendo and Sterling leave then what we we be left with and how much will it cost to replace these too and taking our current situation into account of no CL.

More players like Markovic, Moreno, Manquillo, Can and Origi IMO will be on the cards.

    Discuss.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If Liverpool are going to pay big salaries then it should go on the likes of Gerrard, Torres, Suarez etc; players who have proven themselves; are genuine game-changes, and are in the prime of their careers.

The money shouldn't go on 20-year old pretenders like Sterling, who've achieved the square root of jack-sh** in their careers.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Exactly that's what I'm saying..

    ReplyDelete
  13. Do you not think Can was a good buy?

    ReplyDelete
  14. That is not the point. He is most definitely not on the same level as Henderson so my view is that we need to do all we can to keep Hendo and Sterling as signing another Can or Moreno or Markovic is going to see us further and further behind.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You have tunnel vision. If those two leave, Liverpool will have big bucks to spend on replacements. If Rodgers spends the money, he may waste it again, but he may also *finally* get it right.

If he gets the bullet, someone else will come in, and transfer business might improve.

Plus, there are lots of young players in the academy who are on the verge of breaking through. Ibe, for example, has proven that he can fill the Sterling void (in terms of talent, strength, application etc), so that's one problem solved.

The only thing Liverpool need to replace with Sterling is his goals/assists, and his ratio is comparatively meagre.

Sterling offers nothing else apart from tracking back, but Ibe does that too.

As for Henderson - he isn't leaving. There's no chance, so it's not even worth discussing. Unlike Sterling, Henderson genuinely wants to play for Liverpool; he just wants to be paid a fair salary commensurate with his ability and importance to the team, which is fair enough.

Whatever happens, Liverpool will always unearth players who'll come in and make a huge impact. It's happened every decades since the 1950s, and its not going to change now.

For example: things looked bleak after Benitez left the club in 2nd, and then Hodgson came in, yet Liverpool still signed Suarez, Sturridge, and Coutinho; Henderson stepped up, as did Skrtel, and Sterling came through the system and into the first team.

It's happened fairly recently, and history suggests it will happen again.

You have no evidence (historical or otherwise) to support your contention that Liverpool will fold if Henderson and Sterling are sold.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Or maybe we need someone in charge who can identify and purchase a better quality of player?

    ReplyDelete
  17. But is has been three seasons, well over £200m and we are sitting with square pegs round holes.

How much more money do we need to give Rodgers. In his most recent interview he talked about having no CL available to sign quality players. Back to the start of the season when we had CL on offer, over £100m to spend and it ended in disaster.

IMO no more money for Rodgers thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  18. A quick side note unrelated to the article or the attached Logan vs. JK vs. everyone else rant;

Mackay has been sacked for Wigan. Not hugely important, though TWO of our most promising youngsters are there (Sinclair and Ojo). Should we leave them be at Wigan (Ojo has impressed, though Sinclair hasn't gotten many minutes) or recall them?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Exactly. The first thing i would do right now is make a shortlist of all the top managers and do my best to make one of them sign on the dotted line or find someone like Cruyff and a coach willing to work under him.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If they are doing well there then let them get experience. Doubt they are ready at this point for the big time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rodgers is free of any blame. He did not approve of any of the player that were signed. Exonerated.

Let's give him another £200m to spend. Happy days.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I admire your ideology however I don't believe that it's remotely realistic.

I agree with you that the overpraising of players is ridiculous (and if I have to be more blunt, it's downright annoying).

But the truth is that without spending the money, and most importantly is to spend it on the right players, we're just going to end up falling further and further behind.

There's a reason why Rafa can't hold a job down long term anymore. He's had what, 3 jobs in 6 years. The world of football has changed dramatically since he was last here. The amount of money has skyrocketed.

And as long as the existing system remains and there are owners out there willing to spend the money, the disparity between the haves and the have-nots will only increase.

The premier league has 20 teams... how many have a realistic shot of winning a title each year (3 on the low end, maybe 7 on the high... worse off, it's typically the same 7 teams). So that means there are at least 13 teams in any given year who have next to zero chance of winning the title.

Liverpool have to make sure that they stay with the haves. Because once they become a have-not, it's going to be incredibly difficult to shed that stigma. And ultimately, we will end up being nothing more than a club striving to finish 7th every season.

    ReplyDelete
  23. In my opinion, I'd want to see how the new manager handles them.

If they don't see any time, what's the point of them staying there?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Not You, but too lazy to login8:54 pm, April 06, 2015

I'm not saying we should bring them into the first team, but surely keeping them at a club without a manager aka without a plan for them isn't ideal. Ojo's been pretty good, but Sinclair's only gotten like 8 mins, right? I doubt they'll take a risk to play either after Mackay was sacked for doing so.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The old adage... you typically don't lose your best player and get better.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I.e. Suarez and replaced him with just about a new starting eleven and we ain't even making the top 4 this season.

That is right, let Henderson and Sterling leave. We will find players who can fill in for them in our current state of affairs.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sinclair will end up playing RWB and Ojo LWB. Leave them where they are for now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. While I agree with nearly everything you have said for once, neither of those things will happen in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is what I have been saying all along otherwise I would have a different view of Rodgers.

I have already made a bet with bob loblaw so let's see how it pans out. Rodgers IMO knows he is going, going, gone.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Rodgers gone or not we won't get a big name manager or a DM in the way you mean. We might have some tweets to the committee and then a manager in the Rodgers mould. Maybe a De Boer type who has actually won a trophy or two. Probably someone with a bit more European experience.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You need a Base of a team to build upon. Sell your best players even if they may not be worries and you are building on a weaker foundation. It's clear the owners are not going to offer big bucks in Wages straight away. They are probably not going to break fourty million transfer fee.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well let's see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Side bet? Same as Bob's but instead of whether Rodgers leaves or not it's if he does neither of those things you think will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bottom line is No CL, No quality players will come. Next year CL money increases a huge amount and LFC will fall further behind.

I said it before but loosing to MU & Arse put LFC back to being a nowhere team again, those games meant everything for the foreseeable future. Very disappointing, two draws would have done it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Like I said, we shall see ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. You understand the logic though. Sterling may nit be much now (although arguably our best player) but he could conceivably get to the Torres level. The difference is we pay him that big money which is still less than the same wages plus the thirty or fourty million it will cost to buy the player in his prime. Also having a good Base to bring in one or two great players is always helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What irks me is that we saw this very same scenario the year before with Bale, and Spurs trying to replace him by committee.

I think everyone agrees that we needed more depth to counter the sheer amount of games we'd have to play this season.

But Rodgers didn't tap into that depth, and furthermore, we didn't buy one single bonafide star to more directly replace Suarez.

We wanted Sanchez (who would have been perfect), but he had his heart set on London. I can accept that.

What I can't accept is purchasing so many players and then not utilizing them the right way (playing to their strengths), and not having a backup plan when we could not get Sanchez.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow what has happened to City?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was hoping that at least we will get the chance to get points at Crapford to deny them title, this season is going to hell..

    ReplyDelete
  40. But not too lazy to type all that? Maybe it is not you...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Excatly, his replacement, if worthy, will demand pretty much the same wages so...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Noisy neighbours clash up next its gonna be brutal

    ReplyDelete
  43. They just scored.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Let's hope they find form for that one.

    ReplyDelete
  45. That is why I hate them and Real. Negredo was sold back to Spain and got his career a serious set back- by now he could've been a world beater with us or Arsenal. They bought Jovetic to give him little playing time, usually out of his position and he could've gone to us or Arsenal and flourish. Now they have Bony, again not playing enough and he could've.. You got the picture..

    ReplyDelete
  46. Bony is injured according to the commentators.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nevertheless, they will chew him up and spit him out.. Probably..

    ReplyDelete
  48. My replies to Logan are being moderated no matter what I gues.. Fair call, to be honest..

    ReplyDelete
  49. Like Chelsea but to a lesser extent, they buy players so others can't.

    ReplyDelete
  50. And Real? I just don't understand players that go there, don't they realize it is 2-3 years job? I mean Di Maria wasn't good enough to keep for 6 years and Sterling thinks he will be?!? Bloody hell..

    ReplyDelete
  51. 7 pts behind City but it must really hurt to be behind their neighbours

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'd be amazed if owners allowed Rodgers to go. Last season unbelievable season, football some of the best we've seen in years. This season terrible start with injuries not helping. Rodgers however showed courage and tactical ability in coming up with a different system.

Results improved and we were the in form in the league in 2015. Two bad results later and all of the nonsense starts again about Rodgers not being the right manager etc.

New manager would be a backward step. In our current financial situation relative to others (wage structure and not transfer fees) fifth is the best we should be doing on paper. Last year we superceded that and this year we looked destined to again until last two results.

    ReplyDelete
  53. To be fair Markovic, lallana and lovren based on season before would have been very good signings.

We've also identified and bid for Costa, Willian and Sanchez in last two seasons.

One issue I do have is that I'd like to see BR personally meeting these top targets and selling the club and style of football to them.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Also some of the players deemed a waste of money based on this season may well come good long term.

Henderson is a great example of this. Hopefully lovren, lallana and Markovic will prove to be good acquisitions over future seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  55. But how can we be happy if they turn out to be good and we were wrong?!?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sell sterling for 50 million who does he think he is he's no Suarez takes ten chances to score disrespects the club with interview with bbc he not better than coutinio or Sturridge replace him with ibe than buy a world class striker who doesn't take ten chances to score let him rot on Chelsea's bench or real madrids bench

    ReplyDelete
  57. 65 m for those three!! Fair enough if one or two signings hadn't worked out but very few have..maybe a more experienced higher profile manager would be able to bring the likes of Costa and Sanchez in...

    ReplyDelete
  58. This assumes Rodgers has full control. He clearly doesn't. For example, he said we definitely won't be buying Ballotelli shortly before he's bought.

Your argument requires a change of approach to transfer policy full stop not BR leaving.

I'd start by involving high profile ex players in persuading world class players to join

    ReplyDelete
  59. Bring back Benitez Europe garanteed every season sell sterling he's doin my head in greedy shit

    ReplyDelete
  60. There are other factors too. Costa has the same agent as Moorings for instance.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wasn't guaranteed in his last season.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Nah, that was me :D
    Was on a public computer...

    ReplyDelete
  63. Well I said is not you, just no caps..

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yeah but something else happens that year.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Was far from guaranteed though.. Ain't that one of the best moments in history of football..

    ReplyDelete
  66. Sturridge,.who has hardly played this year, is reportedly on £150K per week. So on that basis what are ever presents Sterling and Henderson worth.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Just take a look at the players he has brought in.he has wasted some amount of money! Not saying the likes of Rafa didn't sign some poor players but he often didn't have the money to spend. Rodgers has spent big and to be honest we have a lot of very expensive average players.iv backed Rodgers all the way but I can't see things improving. From being in the champions league (which was an embarrassing campaign) and spending 120m to scrapping for 5th or 6th just isn't good enough.

    ReplyDelete
  68. £300k/week plus daily gross overpraise.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Gross overpraise is standard = unless you're Toure

    ReplyDelete
  70. In fairness when they gave him that contract I'm sure they didn't expect him to be constantly injured and when fit he's a much better player than sterling or henderson. .

    ReplyDelete
  71. Can't really remember when he was fit and is he 50% better?

    ReplyDelete
  72. I see what you're saying but as I said I'm sure they didn't expect the long injury list.and for me he's absolutely streets ahead..

    ReplyDelete
  73. Tried to warn you...

    ReplyDelete
  74. The champions league was poor but how much money we spent is not really a factor. Not when the four teams above us spent similar amounts or more and didn't lose their best player in the bargain. As for players we signed I am happy with most of them. What I am not happy with was the lack of proper quality like a Satchel type player. The squad is stringer than it has been for quite a while but the first team is weaker than last year.

    ReplyDelete
  75. People like me were very hesitant to start throwing accusations at Sterling early on because there simply wasn't enough solid evidence to substantiate it. But after recent reports, as well as this interview debacle, it's become a lot clearer now.

    ReplyDelete
  76. For the love of... how many times are you going the post the same comment?

    ReplyDelete
  77. That's the owner's philosophy, hopefully it'll change and I don't agreed with what you said the club selling Suarez and Torres, Torres wanted to win trophys and maybe he don't see LFC is gonna fulfill his ambition the man hand in transfer himself, Suarez wanted to move when his dream club came calling and as for Sterling i would said the amount of what LFC offered to sterling is quite lucrative consider he's still very much not end product. Regarding value for the manager clearly Guadiola and Wenger proved they are class above BR.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Some people are as stubborn as Woy hogson.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Logan ,Liverpool is already a feeder club
and I do not think it is a bad thing seeing the finacial trouble
LFC was in a few years ago.

FSG has done a excellent job since taking over.
200m for players in 3 years.
    Building the new stadium .
Now it wants to get players wages in line to income

    ReplyDelete
  80. ? Wenger has won the league title 3 times, just not for since 2004 (guess who bought the rentbots the year before that and spent £160m net in one window), plus he was handicapped by the stadium build. How old are you? 13?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Another kneejerker slating Rodgers without actually suggesting any viable alternatives.

  82. Did or did not Suarez leave? Is or is not Gerrard leaving? How is that not transition? Whingers are boring.

  84. Did or did not Suarez leave? Is or is not Gerrard leaving? How is that not transition? Gripers are boring.

    ReplyDelete
  85. GOD.......that's awful of me, my apology for not knowing Wenger only won it 3 times, how many years..... he's been with the Gunner please remind me did he win any CL as well? sorry Sylvester never a Gunner or Wenger's fan and I know he's good that's why Gunner fans alway calling out SACK HIM.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Thought I saw....i did, just another wanker puddycat ranting commenters without giving any comments, where the hell is that granny, you ought to get spank.

    ReplyDelete
  87. You must be the new generation of Liverpool fan. Old schoolers like me believe in giving credit where credit is due. I'm not going to defend Wenger because his record speaks for itself. Who cares if a few kneejerkers call for him to get sacked?...every club has a few m*rons.

I respectfully suggest you stop ranting online and start getting behind your club for once. Bodgers is doing a good job although there's obviously a lot of work to do. This isn't FF.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yes he is but not good enough well....if you have millions just givit to him to spend on transfer then and he's credit is due after spending 100 mil but buying craps.

    ReplyDelete
  89. BTW I'm getting behind my club as always that' why I'm suggesting for a better manager rather than see the ship sink without doing anything and i've been supporting the club for 37 year.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Well, as far as I can see you're just slating Bodgers. Most of us think he's doing a good job.

You've made two alternative suggestions but neither of them is realistic. Simeone doesn't know the PL and probably doesn't speak English either. He spent most of his playing career in Spain and Italy.

Rafa is a legend, but he's part of LFC's history. Time to move on.

And changing managers every 2 seasons is for relegation clubs and sugar daddy clubs like the rentboys, with no soul but more than enough cash to pay managers off when they get sacked.

    ReplyDelete
  91. You sir suggesting Mourinho , Rafa and Pelligrini know PL and speak English before they come over? What about sacking Woy and Kenny after one season? No fans want's to see their club changing manager like daily attires but fix things only when is broken , BR got talent but is not yet a proven like others top manager that win trophies and he still have years... to learn the trade b4 he's good enough to handle a great club like LFC and great club don't need a manager still learning the trade, that's more for like you said the RENTBOYS club mentality.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Mourinho and Pellegrini both spoke pretty good English when they arrived in England. Rafa's wasn't too bad. I watched his first presser on LFCTV.

As for sacking managers, you can't just cherry pick. Liverpool managers have lasted an average of more than 5 seasons since I went to my first match in 1967. If you've been a fan for 37 years you should know that already. LFC's success was built on continuity.

Roy (apart from being rubbish AND unpopular with the KOP) was appointed by H&G. He had to go. Kenny was a stop gap solution to stabilize the club and get everyone pulling in the same direction.

Bodgers is doing a good job and needs at least 5 seasons to win a trophy or two.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Pellegrini spoke good english?? you do have great sense of humour :) please rewind back on how Mourinho speak when he give his first interview and you found reason for sacking Woy and Kenny that's because it's past(history) good on ya, you said at least 5 season for BR to win A trophy or TWO and that means I'm right about him being compare to Wenger and how much do you think he'll be spending for that at least 5 season Sir? For those managers who lasted 5 season in the past that's because they're great like Shank and Pals, history built what we are today and memories are mean to be cherish and they were many great club then b4 PL started, now look back at those clubs where are they if you don't move on Liverpool were doing great then but now its different ball game and patient is lacking in this fast world which is a bit nasty I find but that's reality, all in all I'm really disappointed with his transfers and over praise for players. Nice chatting with you sir but work is calling, a great day to you.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't have time to bicker with someone who claims to be a Liverpool supporter, especially one who:
    a) doesn't write especially good English himself
    b) doesn't have the decency to quote my words correctly.

I expect you're a bit disappointed that Liverpool won this evening.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Hey rant mouth pussycat, no no no I'm glad actually lol, as for you mother fucking cunt mouth can you speak or write any Asian?? who care about ur good English,it's not my mother tongue but at least I can still get it across comm. and if you don't have the time why bother to reply lol...

    ReplyDelete
  96. Your name suggests you might be a knob and your comments confirm it. Kneejerker is not actually a real word bye the way. I would not call so many eminent players into question either. I have been going to Anfield every week since 1965 so I feel I am entitled to my opinion also which is what these forums are for . The fact that you disagree having read your previous posts to to others seems to be your speciality disagreeing with everyone . You even demean your comments by calling Mr Rodgers, Bodgers . Says it all !!

    ReplyDelete
  97. actually I'm happy that Coutinho score but profile and value wise, it's more like bullying than winning and it's sad to know I'm chatting with a retard.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Rodgers alone has spent 322 million in his tenure. Not fogetting the almost 200 million kk spent all on mediocrity

    ReplyDelete
  99. Victories without trophies are meaningless. This rodgers person should be let go.
We're gradually becoming a mediocre team where finishing I the mid table is ok and stable.
We need to be ruthlessly gunning for trophies.
I think fsg fully don't understand the level of success this club is used to . One might think they confused lfc for West ham or something.
