President: CL-winner who's favourite to replace Rodgers can build a 'new Liverpool' at Napoli

Ex-Reds boss Rafa Benitez is the current bookmaker's favourite to succeed Brendan Rodgers this summer, but Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentis is determined to keep Benitez in Italy, and insists that the Spaniard can bringing success to the Serie A club.

When asked today about Benitez's future, De Laurentis told Radio Kiss Kiss:

"I said to Benitez: 'You can stay another year or five, if you can convince your family. Decide with your wife.

"He said: 'I have to talk with my family, meet me on Saturday'. If he wants to create a New Liverpool in Naples, I'll be happy".

In March, Benitez reportedly rejected a new contract at Napoli, and at the time, FIFA agent Jose Alberti claimed:

"He [Benitez] he will return to England in three months. His mind is already there. He will return to Liverpool and he wants to get back to winning. He is ideal for the Premier League."

It should be noted that Alberti is *not* Benitez's agent. Manuel Garcia Quilon represents the Spaniard, so I don't see how this statement is authoritative. Perhaps Alberti had some inside information, who knows.

However, the fact that Benitez wants to return to Liverpool at some point is beyond dispute.

* Last season, he emphatically told reporters: "I know I will return to Liverpool as coach one day, almost certainly. What I don’t know is when but my wife and children still live there, so I will be back".

* Soon after, Benitez he made it clear yet again (albeit indirectly) that he'd love a return to Liverpool. He told CalcioMercato: “My family is distant, my wife and my two daughters live in Liverpool. It’s the first time that they are not with me and it’s not easy. De Laurentiis knows very well how important the value of the family is.”".

In November, I conducted a poll on the site asking whether Benitez is a good choice to replace Rodgers:

* 16200 visitors (approx) participated in the poll.
* 81% of fans voted YES for a Benitez return.

If Brendan Rodgers gets the red card, Benitez will inevitably be positioned as a major contender for the job. I strongly advocated his departure in 2009, and I maintain it was the right decision to move him on at that time.

However, six years have passed, which is plenty of time for Benitez to reflect on his time at Anfield, and given the Spaniard's nature, I'm sure he has exhaustively analysed where he went wrong, and how he can improve things the second time around.

As such, he'd probably make a better Liverpool manager now, and if he gets the opportunity to manager Liverpool again, there's no doubt that Benitez will grab the chance with both hands.

Benitez is not my preferred choice to replace Rodgers, but if FSG give him the job (unlikely), I'd tentatively support the appointment.

Football opinions should not be inflexible to the point of extreme intransigence; people change, learn, and, most importantly, grow, and with his experiences over the last six years, Benitez remains a realistic candidate for the Liverpool job.

  1. Benitez = FSG = Ice cold water in boiling pot of oil.

    Not going to happen.

  2. Who is your preferred choice?

Despite everything mine is BR for another year at least

    ReplyDelete
  3. bring along Benitez and get in Higuain with him for £20M. then we buy Pedro, Kondogbia and Depay. LFC will truly be back and then the next summer after that, we can have a pop at Champions League with Benitez again

    ReplyDelete
  4. will not happen. rogers will given time.

    ReplyDelete
  5. i cant stand the fact that when we lose he still says we played well. i cant stand his transfer dealings. i cant stand his overpraise. i cant bear to watch it. hes deluded.... we need someone in reality, someone whos honest and experienced. Benitez fits the bill

    ReplyDelete
  6. We will challenge for the title next season only if we make marquee signings.

    Oh the irony!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I won't be mad if BR stays. I really don't think it means anything. What I DO care about is our success. I don't want another clusterfuck of a transfer window, or another poorly played season. It's hurting us every season, which is very detrimental to our place in the EPL, because the top teams will only continue to grow.

  8. Rafa would come back but ide like to see the fella who has a big smile and yellow cap

    ReplyDelete
  9. Kondogbia will join Arsenal, Pedro suppose to be going to inter, Depay will end up with Manure, as for Higuain forget about it

    ReplyDelete
  10. Ditto the above on both fronts.

  11. "Initially, they (Liverpool) came in for him twice a few years ago and at that point, of course he (Klopp) was very much committed to Dortmund," Honigstein said, talking to TalkSPORT 's Hawksbee and Jacobs.

Borussia Dortmund are still the hipster’s choice due to the 47-year-old’s penchant for eccentricity, although the club quite clearly break the first rule of hipsterism; they’re actually cool.

"At the same time, as far as an emotional connection and an ideal fit, Borussia Dortmund to Liverpool is probably the closest resemblance that you can find. "They also sing You'll Never Walk Alone like Dortmund.

The fans are a huge part of the club. There’s a special kind of atmosphere in the city. "It would be very hard for Jurgen Klopp to turn Liverpool down."

Get rid of our current mediocrity! Klopp for the KOP. Yes please!!!

  13. Just watching Liecester take a first half lead against Chelsea, and I can see what LFC are missing.... A team....... We have quality players, just no team.....We had a team last season, and now Brendan has lost it... Who will be incharge next season? I don't really know anymore, but if we can reinvigorate our team again, we would stand a chance of challenging...

    ReplyDelete
  14. No thanks, I'm a huge believer in you should never go back.... Rafa, as much as I love him, is part of the old guard, we need new blood, new thinking....

    ReplyDelete
  15. A young up and coming manager with fresh ideas and a dossier ....

    ReplyDelete
  16. One that praises his team when we lose or draw.

    Done deal.

    ReplyDelete
  17. there I knew you'd see sense - once you'd had your little tantum;;;;;;; or two!

    ReplyDelete
  18. That buys players then ignores them..... yes please... I want some more of that.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He has his own soothsayer, so he really does see it happening...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sorry, I don't want to start with Character assassinations..... I'll leave that to others.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes then in a couple or three years when we've had the odd set back we can go for another "winning" manager - tat's the Liverpool way, nowadays

    ReplyDelete
  22. What I don't get is why Rogers is still at the club he had moderate success last season with CL spot but that success was largely based on Kenny Dalglish signings of Suarez and Henderson. He has now had 210 million to spend and really other than coutinho and can who have been a success Alberto Moreno maybe
    Mignolet-not for me
Lovren maybe for 10m but not at the price we paid
Adam L 12-15m but 26m on an injury plagued player really ?
Studge - good player but that's it not great or fantastic and throughout his career he has had injury problems
Allen - worst midfield player we have
    Think about
    Borini
    Aspas
    Luis Alberto
    Lambert
    Balotelli
    markovich

    Etc etc etc

Would you give him more to spend if you where Henry

Sack him now don't wait bring in Rafa (my first choice) or Klopp, Koeman anyone as a Brendon has lost the plot

  23. Forwards at RWB, CM at CB. Gerrard as a DM.

So who is Rodgers going to rely on when Gerrard is gone?

    ReplyDelete
  24. If I didn't know better I'd say he was not playing them in their preferred or best positions
It's like he's trying to fit something into a different shaped space

    ReplyDelete
  25. One size fits all, cough cough.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I should have said before anyone else posts about the transfer committee and it being Ian Ayres fault. This just isn't true Ian works tirelessly for the club and the committee buy the players Rogers asks for and Rogers has the final say on transfer fee and wages...........FACT

    ReplyDelete
  27. I understand what you are trying to say, but there must be a better way of putting it?

    ReplyDelete
  28. How many trophies have Chelsea won compared to how many manager they have had over the years?

And you belive we will win anything under Rodgers after three seasons of transition? Oh wait, his second was an over achievement. Hence him deserving another season?

    ReplyDelete
  29. You'd have thought that some idiot would have come up with an appropriate idiom by now

    ReplyDelete
  30. If at first you don't succeed, hit the pegs a bit harder?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Money helped a lot there

    ReplyDelete
  32. You are going to have more than one tantrum when Rodgers is shown the door.

    FSG will be at fault.

    ReplyDelete
  33. We spent more than Chelsea this season.

Southampton spent half of what we did and are 1 point behind us. Your point?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Million dollar question... Probably purchase his own kid to slot into the team... Where's he at? Oldham or somewhere similar.... Infact, I might just pop down the Boolies right now....

    ReplyDelete
  35. LAST SEASON WE HAD 13 STARTERS, TWO OF THE BEST LEFT, PLEASE , AND I MEAN PLEASE, TAKE THAT TO EQUATION.

    ReplyDelete
  36. At fault for what exactly.?

    ReplyDelete
  37. How may of Southamptons starters left them? 3 aqnd they are at LFC!!!

    Moot comment I am afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My point is the money they spent pre FFP set them up and they have reaped the rewards of that expenditure even into this season.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not giving Rodgers another season.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If you don't understand how Tadic had easier time impressing there than Lallana and Markovic here...

    ReplyDelete
  41. That would depend on what followed.....

    ReplyDelete
  42. Of course. Markovic + Lallana = £45m

    Tadic = £11m.

Who is to blame for the £45m that has failed us this season?

    ReplyDelete
  43. If Ian Ayre is part of the transfer committee then he has to share some culpability, can you back up your facts?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Plus they had over 100m in player sales to help fund buys.

Luiz and Mata sold for nearly 90m combined.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Perhaps a triangle peg in a hexagonal hole?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm not entirely sure and having consulted Google and Wiki, I'm... not entirely sure... crashed and burned? Harsh but fair (to me) not her, obviously. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I just knew the song, had to google the lyrics to see her name..

    ReplyDelete
  48. Even Pulis at this point is a better option. Give him £117m and let's see what he can do.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You've been eating too many smarties haven't you?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Build a Bus station?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Why player x succeeds at S'oton, and player y fails at Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Is Markovic worth £20m? Lallana worth £25m?

They did not ask to be signed at those fees.

Who should shoulder the blame for them being at Anfield at inflated prices?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Go on give me a clue

    ReplyDelete
  54. Why player x succeeds at S'oton, and player y fails at Liverpool

    3

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would say the measure of success is totally different in top of everything between Liv and S'oton

    ReplyDelete
  56. So if we signed Tadic at £11m would he have done any worse than Lallana or Markovic combined?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Just the start of it, yeah.. And Loges knows all of it..

    ReplyDelete
  58. WHAT IS THE POINT?!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes, he would've spent most of the time in reserves, by merit. Watched him this season- disapeared for months. Watched hi before, he is nowhere near the level we need.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Spent time in the reserves?

Played at RWB under Rodgers that is.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Got it!! I went down a totally different avenue, didn't know the song or writer, wiki = she died in a plane crash with 9 others, RIP. Thought my attempted humour had gone a similar way you meant. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  62. You should know every player we sign is NOT complete failure and every player we don't sign is NOT a flawless player.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Would be great if you had access to Koeman to ask him who would he rather have, Lallana or Tadic. Who would you choose?

    ReplyDelete
  64. So spending £45m on two players whereas Southampton have spent £15m more than that and only 1 point behind us.

    Lallana + Lovren + Lambert = £50m.

Can you make sense of this?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Pulis knows how to play one way. Lets not get over heated yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ouch..Let's delete our posts and walk away..

    ReplyDelete
  67. Does he care when he has taken his team to only 1 point behind LFC in his debut season spending half of what LFC have?

    Send him a postcard.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Lallana or Tadic. Who would you choose?

    2

    ReplyDelete
  69. try this:

    Suarez + Torres = £50m

Did Saints also sign those players?

Conclusion? we can't always sign the bargain of century, asking why? because there are certain barriers in any transfer involved.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It's like using a normal scre driver when you need a phillips head. Something like that?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Blow that, I wouldn't of minded if you did mean that, skins pretty thick. Can't delete mine as a guest anyway, don't think anyone would take offence, obvious we weren't speaking ill of the dead.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Klopp would be a great choice but I really don't think it will happen. Hopefully the next manager will have a much better command of English than Rodgers and know what outstanding means.

    ReplyDelete
  73. For £11m Tadic and then I would take the money spent on Markovic minus the difference on Lallana = £34m and buy a powerhouse striker.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Saints do not have to sign those players when they are 1 point behind the mighty LFC under Rodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You need Tadic/Lallana type of player as a manager/owner of Liverpool. Disregard the price, who do you buy?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Joking.. Why 'case rested'?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Nobiody was willing to pay £25m for Lallana.

He has been average for us and injured too. Tadic at £11m would have been a much useful signing even than Markovic.

Point is that Tadic would have been deployed at RWB if he signed.

Can you see the amount of money that has been wasted this season?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Are you questioning saint's ambitions?

Maybe they don't ''have to'' but they surely like that happening. These days, being only 1 point behind LFC is not such a prestigious honor by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  79. LFC on 58 point after spending £117m.

Southampton on 57 points after spending £67m.

    Read it and weep.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Nope. They have spent more this season. They bought Cuadrado remember? No. Because he is not getting a game. They have spent one hundred million more in the time that Rodgers has been at the club and have a wage bill around one hundred million more a year.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Are you Rodgers in disguise?;)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Is injuries one reason? As well as added pressure.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Please in only one word, as I don't know did you actually answer me, Lallana or Tadic, irrespective of the price?

    ReplyDelete
  84. It was a popular phrase being used on here the other day that whipped up a frenzied debate and as I started using it, I felt it was perhaps a bit unfair to keep changing all the time so people didn't know who they were speaking to and thus decided to hang onto it for a while.
It's not meant to be arrogant, as in I think I've won every point with every post I make and I will probably scrap it altogether soon.

    ReplyDelete
  85. It has been answered.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I recently posted with my real name, first and last, and I said where I work- hardly disguising..

    ReplyDelete
  87. They have spent more money than us mate. They have spent 118 million this year.

    ReplyDelete
  88. If it is Tadic you would've brought, I have to say- clueless.

    ReplyDelete
  89. What is with the derogatory tune in your post?
I'm not the one celebrating over LFC's misery. Whilst I agree our transfer has been abysmal at best, but this is not simple math, Logan.

    ReplyDelete
  90. £117m spent on what?

    ReplyDelete
  91. So you going to edit your eronious post?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Brendan Rodgers, Anfield

    ReplyDelete
  93. Players. Man you really need to pay more attention.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Casing the joint9:43 pm, April 29, 2015

    it's not right?

    ReplyDelete
  95. So lame and trite. Go over to TIA where that lack of originality is lapped up.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Of course, players who are being played out of position.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Agreed. But playing them out of position got us a really good run. You know who else used to play players 2 out of position" a lttle known team called Ajax. All these players are young enough to be flexible. Jesus Can had played all the positions he is playing now before he arrived.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Those are facts. Nothing derogatory about it all.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Talking of facts I notice you haven't mentioned mne?

    ReplyDelete
  100. £117m has managed to get us 1 point ahead of Southampton this season and they have spent half of what we have.

Sorry, but you can say what you want, it is unacceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  101. We looked to have a team at times this year but your right. Sterling's contract actually causing more harm than we thought? Balo being on a completely different wavelength than others? Players being played out of position (yes Logan)? It's hard to say why isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  102. It's certainly not ideal but that is not what I was reffering to.

    ReplyDelete
  103. If Rodgers did not open his mouth about Sterling's contract then it would not have been blown out of proportion!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Mate it was all over the papers anyway. I know in your head it is all his fault but that one I am not having.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Soory but this is not a FACT at all. There is plenty of contridicting statements that suggest this is far from true. Ayre is a part of the committee and one of the money men doing the deals. We have let many players fall through our fingers. This, if not his fault someone doing the job we assume Ayre does.

    ReplyDelete
  106. What does Ajax got to do with LFC?

    Let's not muddy the waters.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Slippery slope there it would be like the forth road bridge....

    ReplyDelete
  108. My facts but I suppose I don't own them. Is it Montenegro you are from?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Yep, that is why I asked..

    ReplyDelete
  110. Good thing you're not Sheikh Mansour.

    ReplyDelete
  111. It was not. After Rodgers mentioned 'incredible deal' the media had an orgasm.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Seriously? Your saying that?

Ajax was just an example of a training method of getting players able to play in various positions to create a more fluid system of play. Fluid like parts of last year perhaps. Not only does it helo the player learn their position but if they learrn to play fullback and are a winger then they understand more about what a full back expects ad wants the opposition to do and therefroe know to do the opposite. So that is what it has to do with Liverpool. It is a method that Rodgers is a fan of.

    ReplyDelete
  113. OMG. We are talking start of the season. Even if you put in the Cuadrado money it is much of a muchness.

    ReplyDelete
  114. So Sturrdige didn't score loads of goals too? So we didn't pick up any points before Suarez was back from his ban? So Coutinho had nothing to do with it?
Also Kenny has admitted he had littel to do with the signing of Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Provide a list of the players being played out of position. Come on, you have said it now own up.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Why are we talking start of the season? So the season stops before Jan? Well it was £27m. That is more expensive than our most expensive player this year but is it theirs? Nope just number 3 spot. Much of a muchness indeed. Perhaps for them yes but shows that they have spent more, are capable of spending more on top of a team that was already far far more expensive than ours. £100m more in three years on top of an already placed CL team. They had soent another £180m in the two season before. You mentioned Chelsea and were dead wrong. But don't worry you have yor Soto fact that you can keep throwing around.

    ReplyDelete
  117. The only player IMO which really stepped up this year was Cout, we need more players really stepping up their games, I'm talking to you Mercenary!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Are you a LFC supporter or a Brendon loyalist?

    ReplyDelete
  119. you're beyond any logic !

    ReplyDelete
  120. I want to give Rodgers another years of transition.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Or we could start a new manager on a new transition

    ReplyDelete
  122. A thoroughly enjoyable country on the shores of West African Ocean. Wow so much lively memories!

    ReplyDelete
  123. A new manager who does not call every performance outstanding.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Said what? That players are being played out of position? Yeah. It is common knowledge. How about I just mention those who haven't taken to it that well? Markovic seemed to have a few good games at wingback and defended admirably at times but from what I gather he would be much happier in an attacking midfield role. Can looks much worse ta full back than CB. Caught out of position a bit too much. Perhaps we should play him LB like he played at Leverkusen. Johnson has played both sides under different managers but is currently gak everywhere. Both Sterling and Hednerson are wasted at full and wing back but both have done decent jobs their. Sterling has looked best as a striker despite his lack of porfilficacy. He wasn't a ten either but did a great job their last season.

Why was that important to you?

    ReplyDelete
  125. mate you are welcome to support Brendon when he'll manage a club in a lesser league.
There is no point in discussing him here. He is a gone case now.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Just listening to Nigel Pearson right now. Humble, no BS and no excuses.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Nothing has happened yet future man.

    ReplyDelete
  128. it's a writing on the wall

    ReplyDelete
  129. Is that who you want to replace Rodgers then?

    ReplyDelete
  130. Kind of like you owning up to providing that "Chelsea gets a piece of the Markovic" sale link after you accused @Stan Dinaround of not doing any research before he posts?

    ReplyDelete
  131. He has been great recently. Maybe all our players need dropping for Brad Jones? Perhaps that is why Johnson is playing. Watch Moreno come back and be excellent.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Did I say that? Yet we have Rodgers making excuses game after game.

Go read my post again or go listen to what Nigel Pearson has just spoken about.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Jay, the Reaper has spoken!

    ReplyDelete
  134. is it a joke?
do you actually know how much cash Rodgers had at his disposal?

    ReplyDelete
  135. He's shown a willingness to choke out the opponent!

    ReplyDelete
  136. and probably no premiership soon

    ReplyDelete
  137. Yes, and Liverpool's wages are STILL less than Chelsea's.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Mate, go google, I quite honestly cannot help you.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Less than Chelsea. All this has been done mate.

    ReplyDelete
  140. By around 100 million a year and we have spent 100 million less in the time Rodgers has been at the club.

    ReplyDelete
  141. See and I didn't move my lips

    ReplyDelete
  142. Are you in love with the guy?

    ReplyDelete
  143. welcome welcome...
any hope we can get a better manager?:D

    ReplyDelete
  144. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Haven't had a beer yet...

    ReplyDelete
  146. The Pearson inteview. You could help by answering if it was on the bbc

    ReplyDelete
  147. I do like that passion.

    ReplyDelete
  148. beer suits me. get one for me too

    ReplyDelete
  149. So I answered your question. Why was that important?

    ReplyDelete
  150. Rodgers success formula for next season -"Get me marquee signings".
With no CL and pounds at his disposal, how would he accomplish this is beyond me !

    ReplyDelete
  151. Well United threw sh!t laods of money at it. I doubt we will do that though. I am not sure sixty odd grand bench warmers are in our future.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Sadly a dozen of bench warmer whom nobody in Europe is interested in hiring

    ReplyDelete
  153. Who United? I am sure loads of teams are interested. Just like they would be in ours. But you know that, your not silly.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Leicester stifled Chelsea throughout the game. Sadly, they lost in the last quarter. They deserved a point.

    ReplyDelete
  155. IMO - there will hardly be any star* signing if BR stays for another season. I seriously doubt if FSG are benevolent, unless BR gets rid of bench warmers like Markovic , Lallana et al to finance big signings.
Markovic+Lallana+Lovren would hardly muster 30 million.

    ReplyDelete
  156. The world wide web. Easy.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I'm pretty sure BR was asked because the rumor was already out... Could be wrong though.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Obviously you can't. Which players are being played out of position at Ajax.

You have made the reference now provide the answers.

    ReplyDelete
  159. You must realize though that we struggled to score before Suarez returned from the ban. 5 goals in 5 games. 3 wins, a draw and a defeat (Ironically to Saints)

    ReplyDelete
  160. Everything is Rodgers' fault, dontchaknow?

    ReplyDelete
  161. But the same style with many chances if I recall correctly? We only used to be more cautious after scoring, like vs Villa, ironically when we defended the 0-1 very well.

  167. If you were to go on the tube and stick in 'Jeremy Paxman vs Michael Howard' and watch the second clip in the results, uploaded by user 'Sumixweb' that has 152,448 views, it may make some sense.
I should of posted it on a different part of this page, hence why I added the bit about it not being directed at yourself and Razen, rather yourself and another poster. ;-)

  169. Thats not really ironic but I do remmeber Sturrdige scoring in consequative games. Winning goals. You seem to have a better memory for the details than myself. But we were playing (as Orme says) in that style and winning enough games and the standout performers were signed by Rodgers,
