Carra blasts: 'Brilliant' £10m LFC star should 'shut up' and 'get back in goal'

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is one of Liverpool's most improved players this season, but he reverted to type against Arsenal today, and Reds legend Jamie Carragher is not impressed.

During the game, Carra criticised Mignolet on two occasions. After the sublime Ozil free-kick, he tweeted:

"Mignolet [cost: £10m] been brilliant today but can't get beat like that on your side from a free kick".

Then, after Mignolet saved from a Olivier Giroud header, he barked:

"Keeper shouts at defence when he makes a good save. Shut up get back in your goal. That's what your paid for".

The free kick goal was a curious one; Mignolet seemed to go the wrong way initially, and by the time he reacted to the actual flight of the ball, it was too late. Carra is arguably right, though - Mignolet should not be beaten on the side he's meant to be protecting.

As for 'keepers shouting at defenders - that's exactly what Mignolet should be doing, surely? The Belgian is constantly pilloried for ineffective communication with LFC's defenders, so if he's being more vocal these days, it has to be a good thing.

Plus, the defence deserved it. In the space of ten minutes, Giroud had three attempts on goal (two headers, one shot), and Mignolet had to save all three, which means the defence was failing to cut out the danger.

Indeed, throughout the game, Toure et al allowed Arsenal's players way too much space, and this proved costly as Sanchez, and (especially) Bellerin, capitalised.

Ultimately, Mignolet was the least of Liverpool's problems today; he could've done better for some of the goals, but he also kept the Reds from suffering the ignominy of an even more embarrassing scoreline.

  1. I ifnd it hard to take Carra seriously here, given he would be the lone voice you can hear berating team mates all game, sometimes drowning out the crowd

  2. Yawn...same old same old under BR

  3. Carra must seriously look back at his playing career and think he was Beckenbauer. Who the F*** does he think he is berating current players? You were a donkey in your final two seasons son - and you bottled out of England 'cos they found you out and knew you didn't deserve a starting place, so how about you shut yer gob?!

  5. Migs madw some good saves but our defense and midfield were awful. Moreno has been a huge liability the last few games. Even with his speed good coaches don't miss those kinds of weaknesses when they plan against us . Our squad needs a purge of the following guys ASAP at the start of the transfer window so they can meld together.
Out. Enrique, jones, Johnson, Allen, Borini, Lambert, Balotelli, Toure, Coates,
For God's sake lets get it right this time and bring in finished products to blend with kids like IBE, Rossiter, Ojo and any you defender(s) we have in the academy. 5-6 finished products and 5-6 kids of our own. Pretty simple,,,,,,,,

  6. It is really getting harder to take Jamie Carragher seriously these days

  7. Mignolet is becoming the scapegoat again.

3 at the back should have been changed many weeks ago but as usual like we saw at the start of the season, Rodgers will stick to a plan if signs are there that it needs to be changed.

The most worrying things has to be that Rodgers is still not settled on a playing style after 3 seasons and continues with square pegs round holes after spending almost £120m this season and +-£100m over the previous two seasons.

So forever changing systems/playing styles, square pegs round holes after spending after almost £220m in 3 seasons = ?

  8. Migs being scolded because he told the defence to aim up? FFS carra, you're talking out of your arse. What do you expect Migs to do? If you want him to exert authority, then don't tell him to shut up when he's supposed to be talking.

  9. Carra shut your stupid trap- so Toure etc get a pass and don't get me started on Rodgers- 'the pitch was slippy'

    ReplyDelete
  10. Haha! My abiding memory of Carra is him shouting at his team-mates What's he on about here? Mig was absolutely correct to rip into his defenders yesterday.

  12. Are him and Skirtel eligible to play against Blackburn or does their ban prevent em from playing- Can too?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm pretty sure any domestic ban includes FA cup, so that means all 3 will be out of the Blackburn game. I suppose that could be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view.

  14. Carra needs to stop trying to sell himself as a football personality and have a half decent bunch of comments no matter how boring.

  15. Oh no not Johnson Toure and Lovren on the field - hardly matters really

  16. We could end up with two Johnson's on the pitch; Glen Johnson on the right and Alberto Johnson on the left ;-/

Arsenal showed us exactly what most of us already know times have changed sorry but you need world class talent if you want to compete with the big guns and that hurt me to say. Their stars were very clinical on the day if it wasn't for Migs we would have been molested. BR and the rest can't compete in the market you have players like Vietto, looking to make a name for himself and we have done nothing, BR does not have what it takes to take us back he has no B plan when things get bad he looks clueless. But don't worry we will probably sign Milner and Inges.

  18. No problem from me with Migs giving the back line a rocketing. Surprised he didn't physically assault a few for the display in the first 10 minutes.

  19. its a scatter gun approach to football on all levels, everything is so hit and miss, Rogers doesnt know his best 11 and when he falls into a winning formula he tries to integrate facile tactics and his favourites back in to the equation which tends to end in disaster

  20. His two saves kept us in the match in the first 10 minutes

    ReplyDelete
  21. Personally, I think we need some good, old-fashioned steel...

    ...BRING BACK RAFA!

  22. Sad but true.

In his new sensationalistic environment, he's becoming a caricature of his former self.

  23. Yep, we were all elevated by the magic of Suarez last year.

Milner I'd take, always appreciated his versatility, work-rate and intelligence. Kuyt-esque, for me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Carra very harsh there. It was a good free kick. It's not like he did a Jones and dove the wrong way.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That is the first time we have conceded so many goals under BR. Until this season we had not lost two games in a row. I also seem to remember battering Arsenal at the Emirates. So no, not same old at all.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There shouldn't be a best 11. If that is the case there is already a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Can slipped. Toure went over about four times. Mainly due to a lack of control but it must have been a touch slippy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Absolutely. His job is to make saves but it is the other players job to make sure he doesn't have to. Carra forgetting some things there.

    ReplyDelete
  29. There is definitely some logic there. Four of the goals we have conceded in the last two games have come from players costing £35m or more. Sanchez was easily the best player on the pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Exactly! We've wanted Migs to be assertive for so long, now Carra complains when he does an Ollie Khan impression.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Where's the Carragherture comment gone? I liked that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Few points on the free kick-
    How far was it?
Who were players beside the ball?
    How good was the shot?

A very good shot, from perfect distance, from a great player that can shoot in at least 3 different ways, and who had help from a player with similar abilities. Not Mig's fault, had he save it, would've been more than perfect.

  33. Let's be honest thoough...he stuffed up a basic. If the wall is covering one side of the goal, you don't position yourself too close to that same side.

    ReplyDelete
  34. LFC NEEDS A NEW COACH,NEW KEEPER,NEW DEFENSIVE MID,NEW WINGER THAT CAN PLAY LEFT RIGHT CENTRE AND A NEW STRIKER LIKE HIGUAIN

    ReplyDelete
  35. It was Mesut and Sanchez on 20 yards free kick. Positioning is mission impossible..

    ReplyDelete
  36. You can make it easier for yourself, ie by not leaving such a big, wide target for Ozil to aim at.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I f you do that you leave a big wide target to Sanchez..

    ReplyDelete
  38. It was a good enough position to have gone near post. Far but near enough. It wasn't great but some of the saves he made were. Of all the players who deserved stick in that game. Mignolet deserved it least.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Lol, yeah, was just wondering where it went. It's been removed apparently, I wonder why?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow! this is hilarious... Carra and Redknapp need to shut up and get back to eating fattening food in flash resturants and leave the players to play their own games.... Carra isn't exactly free from serious errors during his tenure... His last Euro game for example, dodgy back pass that led to Zenits first goal, the goal that ultimately put LFC out bsed on away goals.... Ming was superb yesterday, and if that's all they can say about it, then shame on them.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Battering at the Emirates? Not by a long shot. Liverpool haven't won by more than 1 at Arsenal in more than 30 years.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just imagine we had that kind of quality in our side.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Couts is better than Ozil, Sterling should be close(r) to Sanchez..

    ReplyDelete
  44. i disagree if your watching a team train etc you should be competent enough to gauge who is the best man for the job

    ReplyDelete
  45. My point is there should be a best fourteen or so with horses for courses. If you have a best eleven then they would have to be world's who can play any game and succeed. Otherwise you need a decent squad. If you only have a good eleven you won't get much from the season as there are teams with more better players.

    ReplyDelete
  46. rogers hasn't a clue on what system or players to use ....its ad hoc management

    ReplyDelete
  47. No I suppose your right. Thirteen games unbeaten is a terrible run. Last season with the diamond too. What an idiot he is.
