BR's Top Target: Liverpool chase 'extraordinary' €30m striker Benitez tried to sign

With Liverpool's season swiftly descending into mediocrity, quality reinforcements are clearly needed this summer, and the Reds are once again being linked with a surprise move for Manchester City outcast Stevan Jovetic.

In March, The Mirror claimed that Liverpool are 'planning to offer Jovetic a deal in the summer', and according to new reports this week:

* Liverpool are still 'interested' in signing Jovetic.

* The Montenegrin - once hailed by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as 'extraordinary' - is allegedly Brendan Rodgers' 'number one forward target'

Prior to his €30m [£22m] move to City, Liverpool were regularly linked with a move for Jovetic, and two years after leaving Anfield, Rafa Benitez confirmed that he tried to sign the striker in 2009. He told reporters:

"Jovetic was our target but we didn't have the money. My idea was to play [Javier] Mascherano, Lucas, [Steven] Gerrard, [Alberto] Aquilani, with Jovetic between the lines, but we didn't have the money."

After learning of his Champions League exclusion in February, Jovetic poured scorn on the decision and blasted City boss Manuel Pellegrini:

“I deserve to play in the Champions League. The manager has killed me with this decision. I am very disappointed. I don’t think it was a good decision. I told the manager this but he did not want to listen”

Jovetic also made it clear that he's considering quitting the Etihad this summer:

“I have not made any decision about my future, but the manager has put other players ahead of me, so maybe this is a message. This is a bad time for me but I am working hard and I will be there for the team"

When he has been fit, Jovetic's record is creditable, but not impressive enough to justify Liverpool's interest:

* 11 goals/6 assists in 44 games.
* Goal every 3.8 games.
* Goal/assist every 2.6 games.

Given his injury history, Liverpool's failure to sign Jovetic was clearly a good thing. Since his arrival at City:

* 5 injuries in 1.5 seasons.
* 138 days on the sidelines.
* 29 games missed for City.

Khedira, Gourcuff, Wilshere, and now Jovetic? It's concerning that Liverpool are continually linked with players who have atrocious injury history, and like the aforementioned trio, the Reds should avoid Jovetic like the plague.

It may all be paper talk, of course - in light of Daniel Sturridge's injury problems, it makes no sense for Rodgers to pursue yet another injury prone striker, but if there is any truth to this particular rumour, then serious questions need to be asked at Anfield about the judgement of those making the transfer decisions.

  2. i honestly dont get BR. just look at mourinho. he doesnt do anything special in terms of managing other play and buy players in there correct positions and prioritises whats important. last year Chelsea were weak on goals and lost Lampard so he bought Fabregas, Costa and Courtois. Rodgers now..... prioritises buying Borini even though we had Suarez? prioritises buying Joe allen even though we have Shelvey, Henderson, Lucas and Gerrard. prioritises buying Lallana even though we had Coutinho and sterling who made rapid stride in the number 10 role. prioritises buying a marquee attacker, missed out on Mkhtiryan, Willian and Costa and spend the money on Sakho? spend a big sum on Markovic when we've got Ibe, Sinclair, Sterling, Ojo much better than him as a winger(Markovic a decent no.10, but then we got Coutinho so still dont make sense). Buy Ilori for £10M and never play him? buy Alberto and Aspas for £15M combined and never play them.

Brendan Rodgers clearly has poor managing qualities. and im not talking about a Manager. im talking about managing in general. in life, you have to get your priorities in order. Brendan Rodgers clearly doesnt know what hes doing with the clubs money and doesnt strengthen where clearly needed. instead of waiting he just blows it. i have never seen a manager use money in this way. HONESTLY. how can you buy so much deadwood?

  3. Kondogbia is better than Carvalho, and when becoming Champions you need balance. Hendo is the perfect player to partner Kondogbia as he is box-to-box and Kondgobia sits and get involved when needed. Hendo can also tackle but is not a defensive mid, so will have license to push higher while coutinho will be the heartbeat. if we had Kondogbia and Carvalho in midfield they are both to similar and will decrease our goals/assists from midfield. Hendo or Can will be suitable partners for Kondogbia who is left footed as well

  4. Jovetic good but yh no thanks. in summer if we miss out Pedro, go for Higuain, can get Higuian, get Lacazette, cant get Lacazette, buy Benteke or Vietto who we can definately both buy. but Pedro or Higuian will give this club and the players the lift we need. and also it will be a massive statement to the league if we had one of those galaticos in our team

  5. That's superb, cheered me right up, many thanks. What nationality are all these players though as it's of vital importance.

  8. Buy a suitable striker when we had £117m available last summer when clearly we needed one? This is unheard of, especially to Rodgers.

Rodgers 'we lost 50 goals' has Borini and Lambert, does not make proper use of them but expects a 20 year old who is far from being a striker to deliver the goods up top?

    That is such excellent management!

  11. Always funny to see teenager talk about football, putting your transfer list and your formation like it matters, and doing a BR and putting half the player at the wrong place (Can is a midfielder and Sakho a DC, Pedro is a traditionnal winger)
Yarmolenko and Aurier... thank god you're not connected to liverpool

  12. loool sincerely yaknow. damn thats cold. i hate to see LFC lose, hurts too much but i know BR wont have the balls to drop and punish Sterling so i hope we lose and he gets sacked. a matter fact i want us to lose all four remaining games so we dont get Europa league and we can rebuild a team of Galacticos starting with the selling of sterling and the arrival of Memphis Depay

If you're right, he's gone anyway. I'm not arguing anymore about whether BR is utter drivel or not, I'm just wondering whether you have ANYTHING else to say.
Who do you think whomever the next season's manager will be, LFC should buy to challenge for next season

  30. Jovetic is talented but very injury prone it would be stupid to buy another player with injury problems on what would be big wages.

I have no doubt that BR will be the manager next year, while the Anfield development is ongoing FSG will not pay 15-20m to sack Rodgers as that will be most of the budget allocated to transfers gone for next year as they generally put in about 20-30m plus money from sales.

They will look at it as new manager with basically just player sales to use for players or give Rodgers another year with the extra 20m to spend.

I imagine player sales with be around 30m (Ballotelli,Lambert,Borini,Wisdom,Enrique,Aspas,Alberto,Coates) then the players leaving on a free, Gerrard, Johnson and Toure (most likely). All those player leaving will free up around 600k per week in wages.

So Rodgers will have around 50m plus 600k per week in wage budget also maybe what ever sterling bring in. I guess the most we can hope for is Depay and a out and out striker. Then i would guess maybe Milner and Konoplyanka as free transfers with the wages coming out of the pot freed up by departures.

  31. I know. I got dragged into discussions with Logan yesterday - it's a waste of time. It's just the same 'square pegs, round holes' and 'Rodgers and 117 million wasted' talk. Trying not to engage him anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm not having a go but that is a good constructive comment that opens debate. I agree with your view.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm extremely confident that BR will be manager next season. All Journalists with close links to the club say the same and there are no rumors from actually within the club that his job is on the line.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's easy to fall back in. I have backlid plenty of times.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Shelvey vied with Hendo- Only one winner there. He was also a bit of a liability tactics-wise. Stop exaggerating fees- Illori was only £7m. Nobody thought Maurinho a fool for loaning out Courtios for several seasons
Ojo/Sinclair - not ready for the 1st team, still learning. Definitely not going to take us to the next level, and both Aspas and Alberto were fairly low cost gambles, along with Coutinho , so 1 out of 3 is a fair return and they hardly broke the bank. Sakho is still one of our best defenders and is still young enough to develop
Are you REALLY saying we should not buy any more AMs cos we have Coutinho?
It's called strength in depth, and I think you'll find ALL the top teams have it..

    ReplyDelete
  36. Logan just needs Rodgers to give him a hug and tell him everything will be alright.

  37. Jay Jay - you always have such a calm and realistic viewpoint. Always enjoy reading your posts.

Klopp will have several options (Pelligrini will likely go, maybe Ancellotti if they finish the season poorly - doesn't take a lot for a RM manager to be sacked). RM is a polished chalice so doubt he'd go there anyway. City is an interesting one but they need a lot of rebuilding, but money will be there.

The big pull for Liverpool is the draw of being the guy to finally end the 25 years title wait. Whoever that is will be lauded in the history books forever. That's why even Mourinho would have been tempted to give it a go at one stage.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I find it difficult to really get into prospective new players until it seems there is genuine weight behind the likely hood of us signing them. For me it just leads to a lot of disappointment sometimes.
I know what you mean re furthering the discussion though and I'd be interested in an article regarding the one known we can debate, FSG. They are obviously a surety to be the owners for the foreseeable and most people, including myself are happy with that.
I'd like to see a real shift in the way they approach transfers though, both in and outgoing ones. Hopefully they already know exactly what's happening with the manager and have already identified targets for whomever will be in charge and put in motion efforts to get them.
Let's acquire at least our main targets asap and get cracking with bedding them in and really building a good team for 2015/16.
Also up for discussion is if they need to adapt their philosophy towards the type of player we need, or at least consider the ratio of experience levels throughout the team.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What will you do from now until end of season to shut him up?

    ReplyDelete
  40. That won't change a thing. Just like with Kenny, it wouldn't have mattered even if we won the FA Cup that year to complete a domestic cup double. Henry/Werner said that Kenny would still have been sacked. I think our owners are a little more knowledgeable than basing the sacking of a manager on whether we draw or lose 6-0 in a single, now meaningless game.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am not always calm mate. Must have caught me on good days but thanks for saying it.

I tend to disagree mate. As much as I obviously love the club it could be seen as a poison chalice. We want to compete woth teams who have much more expensive squads and pay more for first team players as well as those wages. The fanbase expect certain things that are for the most part very unlikely. Winning the league means getting more points than all those teams with more expensive squads and players (wages too). That means near perfection from a team that is mostly made up of young players. Which seems to be the owners preference. This is very difficult and the media and even own fans can't wait to be critical.

So he could have money like he has never had before at City or come to us and have to beat more versions of Bayern Munich than he ever has before on much less money. Hard to see him turning that down.

Also it has been mooted that Arsenal is an option with Wenger going in to DF role. That would be a starting point that almost all managers would jump at. On their day they are potentially the best team in the league.

Mourinho wouldn't have come. He likes spending big.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I respect both as quality players, but I think Khedira is going to have the same injury problems he had at Madrid. If he stays fit, it's a good buy. But thats a big IF.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Again, a good view. Arsenal would be the bid attraction for sure. They have such a strong foundation and are so close to getting near the peak and winning the major trophies (though we have been saying that for a few years now and they can't take that final step). But, I agree, Arsenal would be #1 in many managers' eyes.

I guess I am clutching at straws in terms of Liverpool's attractiveness. I do like how FSG go about their business and the model they try to adhere too. If we were already a title winning club when they arrived, they would be the perfect 'long-term sustainability' owners. But it's a very steep climb to success as we were a 6-7th place club when they arrived. They have provided a fair amount of money (a lot, admittingly, has been wasted by both Kenny and Rodgers) but they may never have the deep pockets we need to get to the top.

If someone like Klopp came in, he would want another 100+ million (even then, we would hope he would make shrewd signings as that would disappear quickly), a season of transistion and then 4 Bayern Munichs to finish above. I have little doubt that Rodgers will be manager next season.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Lacazette will be great but it is highly unlikely he will move to Anfield with no CL football on offer. He will have clubs lining up who can offer success.

I would wait for the new manager or coach and DOF to arrive and let them make the decisions on players. It is highly unlikely there will be much money made available too as we have many players on loan and in our squad that need to be moved on first.

As for the manager, Jurgen Klopp would be my first choice and if not then walk across a filed scattered with sharp blades to get Ancelotti.

Then there is also the likes of De Boer or another option and even Marcelo Bielsa.

Ancelotti will most likely be the most difficult to get but there many other names out there. Even Phillip Cocu?

    ReplyDelete
  45. A good summative post in my opinion.
A friend mentioned the other day that chelski are already busying themselves, once again trying to buy up as much prospective talent as possible, likely most will never make it to the bridge.
I wonder how far the FA/FIFA will pursue the likes of FFP or similar and although not it's main aim, perhaps that will help level the playing field a bit.

  48. I think Klopp has shown in Europe he has quality as a manager but and he is one of the few that I would gladly see the back of Brendan for, but even if he were to arrive he has never managed in England before. Not went up aagainst Pulis or Mourinho sides regularly, never had to play though winter (being the most packed schedule) play and extra 4 games (maybe not the biggest deal but with Europe?). There is not guarentee of success and he would be aware of that more than anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Klopp would be the most likely, I think we can safely rule out Ancelotti for the same reasons you rule out Lacazette.

Not much real quality after that though- De Boer has won the Dutch league 4 times, but that's a 2 horse race. Ajax do nothing in the CL either , no better than we were this season. 2nd tier for me, not a big enough step up. Biesla is a nutter. Ruined Argentina when he took them to the WC. Thinks rnning is the answer to everything, alienates the players quite a bit.

As for players, who do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Rodgers before the season started: “There is only an excitement and a belief inside the club that we can challenge again for the title this time."

Back in January: "This season was always going to be difficult," Rodgers told a news conference ahead of Saturday's home FA Cup tie against Championship (second tier) sideBolton Wanderers.

"With so many changes and everything that's happened, we weren't going to challenge for the league this year. That's reality.

Look, I know I am harping on about it but can everyone see what a good salesperson Rodgers is?

Now, if Rodgers believed we could challenge for the title at the start of the season, would he have not have made promises to our owners?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think that's actually Brendan Rodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  52. *Sigh*

I think Rodgers told the owners it would not likely be a repeat of last year following the missing of the one available player who could fit into Suarez' place and allow us to retain tactics from last year. I believe they accepted that we were making progress and simply wanted to continue to do so when viewed overall.

That's why I don't necessarily believe that BR will be sacked unless they can get Klopp.

Managers who do well are duty bound to say they will fight for the title. otherwise the press and fans will have a field day calling them defeatist, even if the realist in them tells them it's unlikely. And that applies to all the top 6 or 7 managers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I totally agree with you, I was just ever so slightly trying to encourage him or her to let rip with both barrels at - TheRed ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes, he should have come out at the beginning of the season and said, 'We've no chance. You fans might as well take up gardening on the weekends...'

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes so you tell the fans their is a belief inside the club that we can challenge at the start of the season and then tells us 6 months later that "we weren't going to challenge for the league this year. That's reality."

    That alone is unacceptable. Agree?

    ReplyDelete
  56. but it is acceptable for him to change his tune and lie about what he said?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Not really lying - just playing the part of the manager. It's his job. You put too much stock in what people say. Do you believe politicians?

    ReplyDelete
  58. The transfer window was still open and we harboured thoughts of replacing Suarez with Alexis Sanchez. It was always going o be difficult to replicate the year before when we lost our best player.

So what would you have him say? We've given up before we've stared? There's always the chance of doing it, even if far fetched- Look at the season before- nobody predicted that, not even you

So no, unacceptable is not how I'd describe it. I thought we'd got past this desire to vilify Rodgers and were looking forward?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh, so then how can he complain about "loss of 50 goals" when he believed we could challenge for the title at the start of the season?

This is Liverpool Football Club and the manager can come and go and say things as he pleases while the fans just have to nod their heads?

Now he has come out and said we will challenge next season? Take that with a pinch of salt too? "You put too much stock in what people say." I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Direct quote:

‘Our chances this season, are not comparable with the chances of other clubs. ‘Other clubs have different stability, squads and evolution of the team to be considered the favourites to win the competition.

  62. “There is no depression here, there hasn’t been a hangover,” he said. “I wasn’t lying on a sun lounger on a beach over the summer crying and fretting over the fact that we lost the league.

“There is only an excitement and a belief inside the club that we can challenge again for the title this time.

“We proved last season that we can handle the pressure of a title run-in. I know people will point to the Chelsea and Crystal Palace games, but they should look, instead, at our last 14 games.

“Twelve wins, one draw, one defeat. That kind of form usually wins you the title. So, I know we can cope with the pressure. What we didn’t get was that wee bit of luck you need along the way.

“We just didn’t get the breaks when we needed them most, but I believe that we will be back up there, challenging, and Liverpool Football Club is a very exciting place to be at this current time.

“Last season was a great step forward and now we must believe that we can go one better.

“If it doesn’t happen this year, then it will happen soon. I really believe that because of what we’re building at the club.”

Luis Suarez has departed, but Liverpool have lavished more than £100million to recruit Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert, Divock Origi, Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo.

GettyAdios! Liverpool have seen the back of Suarez but spent £100m on new faces

Rodgers added: “I think the new signings have been good as they bring a freshness to the club. But, first and foremost, I never dwell on the negatives. It was a season when I gained enormous experience – and I loved every single second of it.

“I have wanted to be at the leading edge of the game all of my life and I was fortunate to be in there, challenging for the title, right until the very end.

“This is where I want to be. It’s where I want Liverpool to be and, hopefully, we will be back there again this time.”

We had already done all our spending at the time of Rodgers comments, only Balotelli followed.
