Top-Transfer: Liverpool plan €14m bid for 'exceptional' Barcelona star who wants Anfield move

Earlier this season, the Daily Mail claimed that on-loan Barecelona star Alex Song 'believes' he will sign for Liverpool this summer, and it appears that the Reds are still monitoring the coveted midfielder.

According to reports this week:

* Song wants to stay in the Premier League next season.

* 'Anfield officials' believe a €14m bid will persuade Barcelona to sell.

When asked this week about his future, Song - who reportedly earns £140k a week at West Ham - told reporters:

""I definitely want to stay here [in England]. I can't say anything now because I want to focus on the rest of the season and then we will see".

In a recent column for the Daily Mail, ex-Red Jamie Redknapp hailed Song as 'outstanding', and suggested that his performances 'are the reason West Ham [reached] third in the table' earlier this season. He enthused:

"He [Song] is exceptional. Who is going to take him at the end of the year? He [Song] will have a lot of options come the end of the season when his loan from Barcelona comes to an end".

Anfield legend Jamie Carragher is also a fan of Song, and in a recent interview, he enthused:

"Big, powerful and versatile, Song would definitely give an edge to any midfield. He was suited to the physical side of the game when he was here with Arsenal".

Song is different to other midfielders in Liverpool's squad, and he'd clearly bring something different to the likes of Lucas and Allen. If Rodgers had signed him up last summer, the Cameroon international probably would've hit the ground running at Anfield and made an immediate impact (just as he has at West Ham).

That said, West Ham's form has nosedived over the last couple of months, and Song's influence appears to be waning, which is one of the (alleged) reasons that the Hammers are reluctant to sign him on a permanent deal.

It looks like Song has grown weary of playing for West Ham, and given the teams for whom he's played in the past, that is understandable. It doesn't, however' mitigate a perceived lack of effort and/or loss of motivation, and that's something the Reds will have to consider.

Should Liverpool sign Song in the summer, or stick with Lucas and Joe Allen? One thing's for sure, I'd prefer to see the Reds bring in Song over James Milner.

  1. Song certainly has talent, but there seem to be questions over his mental game. I don't mean he doesn't have motivation, but as the saying goes, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. The going got tough at West Ham, and he seemed to collapse right with them. Next season will definitely be a challenge for us to get it all back together. Does he have the mental strength to help us? Especially with our senior players all leaving (Stevie, Johnson, Jones, Lambert, possibly Toure) that's something we really have to consider.

  4. If Illaramendi, Kondogbia, Naingolan fails, yeah, the next best thing for a smaller fee..

  5. Would really like to know why he did it- I mean does anyone do that to somebody for no reason?!? Not saying there can be a valid reason for that, just want to know why..

  6. Nainggolan + Illarramendi would be stellar business imo. A bit unlikely, but Illarra would be a quality backup/replacement to Lucas and Nainggolan would be the perfect foil for Hendo if we need a change of pace or some steel in the mid during some of the games. A midfield of Hendo, Nainggolan, Allen, Lucas, and Illarra would be class. Can too, but personally I think converting him to CB full time would solve the CB position for years to come. Can + Sakho could really dominate for awhile if form holds.

  7. Despite needing a DM, Milner over Song without a doubt.

  8. At this moment in time anyone with more physical presence and confidence that the "Welsh Xavi" is welcome.

  9. I think Illara+Naingolan is too much- it ain't the squad depth, it is pure quality on the bench, specially with no Cl probably.. And Naingolan might just be the answer as there is nothingg he can't do in the final third, and he is a true DM
AAs for Sakho- Can, we would have more technique in CB than some teams in strikers..

  10. How, who would you play? Buy a DM too, or?

  11. Yet again, when we touched the bottom he was one of the few that was worthy of the shirt, NOT getting bullied.. I am not saying he justified the price tag, nor that he will take us to the next level, but good squad player. Pricey, nevertheless good.

  12. Can been a revelation at right back however think he has too many frailties as a defender to bu utilised as a CB; would like to see him blossom into the midfield powerhouse he has the potential to be.

  13. Remind me whose bottom we touched?

  14. He's dispensible. We need toughness in the middle.

  15. I'd take Milner AND Song although I do think there are better options out there. I wouldn't be against us signing them both though. Wealth of experience and pedigree between them

  16. Illarramendi should be stayed away from. Watching Madrid's win this week made it clear that he isn't the player he used to be. Despite their win he played very badly, and I can't see him coming here for less than 20m.

Kondogbia and Nainggolan are both players that I would, however agree to.

But I do think for us Kondogbia would be the safer bet, as he is stronger and more defensive minded.

  17. Dispensible, yes, should leave? Not necessarily..

  18. Didn't watch Mardrid this week. Actually I only watched him 5-6 times and he looked great. Maybe I was just convinced by the shirt he is wearing, I don't know. Kondogbia and Naingolan I agree on your assesments, and the point is that neither would flop surely if they don't set the world alight..

  20. between them, as milner on free, 7 odd mill euro each if split is great business. whats that 4.5 mill pounds each - no brainer.

have heard though that song is apparently lazy in some aspects, but given a better team than west ham and a goal of top team I reckon he would be great...nothing like good players around you to bring about the internal comment 'I can do better than you.....'

  21. A midfield diamond of Song, Milner, Hendo, and Coutinho sounds pretty good to me.

  24. naingolan, hendo, milner, couts? Milner is free and perfect for that position.

  25. Whether he stays or not doesn't bother me. I couldn't care less, just as long as he's not first team. Goes to show that after all this time he's not an important cog in the wheel because it's hard to see what he offers & for £15mill we got robbed. If we're ever going to progress we need an imposing DM, preferably not Milner. He's a worker but I've never seen him dictate a game, I don't think he's the answer.

  26. Yes buy a DM. One who is better and preferably more consistent.

  27. Can is ours, young, talented player, and perfect for that position.

  28. I've heard the lazy thing too but he must've put a shift in at Arsenal or there's no way Wenger would've picked him every week and Barca probably do more running than anyone, although he was always just going to be a squad player for them

  29. I wouldn't mind Song, but only for the same salary that Lucas is getting
