Anfield-bound? 'Incredible' €20m star desperate to quit Barcelona and sign for Liverpool

Liverpool are once again being linked with a move for Barcelona star Martin Montoya, who has been linked with a move to Anfield multiple times over the last few years.

According to The Mirror today:

* Barcelona have given Liverpool the 'green light' to sign Montoya.

* Montoya - who has a €20m buyout clause in his contract - will 'listen to whatever Liverpool put on the table' and accept a move 'if it ticks all the right boxes'.

* Brendan Rodgers is allegedly a 'huge fan'.

The story so far:

* May 2013: Spanish newspaper Spanish newspaper Sport alleged that Liverpool had 'enquired about the status of Montoya' and claimed that Brendan Rogers is a big fan of the Barca player'.

* Sep 2013: Montoya's agent, Jose Maria Orobitg, told FCInterNews: "The renewal [of Montoya's contract] has not yet arrived. Inter Milan, Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool are interested"

* Dec 2013: The Guardian claimed: "Liverpool have opened talks with Barcelona over the transfer of Martín Montoya. Managing director, Ian Ayre, met Barcelona officials in Catalunya [last] Thursday to discuss a possible fee".

* Nov 2014: Reports in Spain claimed that Liverpool were on the verge of sealing a January deal for Montoya.

* Dec 2014: When asked about his future in December, Montoya's agent, Juan de Dios Carrasco, told reporters: "Montoya will 100 per cent leave Barcelona. We just want to find the best club for Martin, so he can continue his progression. Germany, Italy and England all have clubs that are already pulling strings to sign him."

Montoya - described by former Barca boss Tito Villanova as 'an incredible player'- is clearly fourth-choice right-back at Barcelona, and according to Spanish newspaper Sport, the Spaniard is desperate to quit the club. A recent article claimed:

"The straw that broke the camel's back for Montoya was the match against Almeria, where Adriano was chosen for right side of the back four. Montoya felt 'humiliated' according to the his representatives, who have decided to look elsewhere"

Luis Enrique has utilised Montoya a little more this year, but the Spaniard still wants out, as his Agent confirmed in January:

"Our idea is still the same: the player wants to leave. We are waiting for the club to select a new sporting director so we can speak with him and find the best possible solution."

If Liverpool sign Montoya that it'll surely be curtains for Javier Manquillo. The Reds will have Flanagan, Montoya, and Can capable of playing on the right, and if Manquillo can't maintain a first-team place right now, I don't see how that'll change when a new right-back comes in.

  1. I think Montoya is a well balanced fullback like Azpilicueta and Zabaleta.Generally one side of a fullbacks game whether it be attacking or defending overshadows the other.
Case in point, Moreno is much better at attacking whereas Jon Flanagan is far more comfortable defending.
I like Montoya. If the price is right.Make it happen!

  2. we need to bring through players from our academy. whats the point of buying Montoyas, Manquillos, Albertos if there not already world class and aint got no chemistry with there teammates. i watch LFCTV everyday and i dont know if it just me but it looks as if we got a potential Barcelona style world class chemistry growing. some of the football these boys play is breathtaking and im sure if we played like this

    -----------------------------------------Mingolet
    McCaughlin----------------Skrtel---------------Sakho---------------Flanagan
    ------------------------Rossiter----------------Can/Hendo
    ------Wilson--------------------Kent/Coutinho-----------------Ibe
    --------------------------------------Canos

canos is brilliant and i can only imagine this kid scoring 4 goals and scoring lobs and running around anfield like Lionel Messi. he has the potential to be as good as messi and his ball control, movement and finishing is 1st class and coming to england at age 16 will help him massively as with his technical skills already on a next galaxy to all in the academy whilst he builds up his physical skills, he will be a LFC great and potentially the best player in the world. Canos already has a brilliant understanding with Wilson, Kent, Marsh, Rossiter, McCaughlin and Ibe and this is priceless in football. as long as we dont get relegated, i would rather our young players didnt make the top 4 so they can develop with their already fantastic chemistry and come back better year after year rather than the likes of Lallana, Markovic, Balotelli, Allen(we played rossiter once in the same role and he got a goal), Lambert, Borini who just waste our money. instead let our young players play and fail if there gona fail and win which is a bonus then we can save our big bucks for world class players to add to our brilliant soon to be LA MASIA LFC academy, where all 11 players will be star players.

Wilson is a brilliant player and will be the star man also. he can take free kicks, has excellent finesse finishing and is a match winner by ability. the link up play and chemistry he has with Canos, Marsh, Kent and Sinclar can win LFC Champions league in 3-4 years. Kent is going to be the kop darling and will battle it out with Coutinho for a place for number 10. he plays like C.Ronaldo. not so much pace, so abit like Barkley but hes top class too. Marsh is a brilliant striker and he will come on as a sub for canos to finish off the job. he scores goals and world class 1s too so he will definately be apart of the squad. and everyone nows Ibe will be LFC Alexis Sanchez soon enough, just play him on the wings and let the massacre occur.

these players are on LFC books, so this is definately possible but only Guardiola and myself would have the balls to do it. so instead i hope we sign Luciano Vietto to lead our line and get us 30 goals a season, Yarmolenko to play right wing, Memphis Depay for left wing and Felipe Anderson for number 10 to compete with Coutinho instead of Lallana who deserves to be sold for doing nothing for LFC despite being our marquee signing and having massive experience.

  8. I don't think you get how this forum works.JK writes articles about players linked to us through other media sources.
Most of the time it's not his personal view of wanting whoever he writes about.

  9. I like either Montoya or De Sciglio... But I don't see his arrival as a bad thing for either Flanno or Manquillo...especially with Johnson on the way out, and probably Enrique too.....

    1) Yarmalenko is overrated - would not get into our reserves
    2) Ibes not a right back , he can play wing back , but is at his most dangerous as winger
    3) Rossiter is not better then Kovacic
    4) I also want Lacazette

Sterling and Henderson can leave , they are both over rated.

Jaimie i disagree with you a lot .
But you are 100% right concerning Sterling.

It is all Carraghers/ Rodgers fault
tehy built up a fairly average player and made the hype
    Why do pundits do that?

Sterling was not doing what Fowler and Owen were at a younger age , carrying a team by themselves.
When Sterling had that responsibility he failed, and Carragher called him the best player.
Carrgehr should never be allowed to be lfc manager ,

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, I find it hard to believe that you think he's better than Allen, even if you think he's overrated. If you REALLY want Hendo not starting, sell Allen and just demote him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Carras fault? Please post a serious source in which carra says that sterling is the best player of the BPL/england/liverpool.

Carra should never be allowed to be lfc manager?
.please just go back to TIA

  33. I'm happy to have Montaya join our spainish contingent at the back. Joining Moreno, Manquillo and Enrique although I'm not how long will be here . I agree with @kopite s point that McCaughlin is not any less talented than Manquillo.

  35. I would rather take a chance on signing Daryl Janmaat. Been excellent all season in a very mediocre Newcastle team.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ryan McLaughlin is a real option soon, although I thought Stephen Darby would make it, but McLaughlin is better going forward. Ibe has come through but these academy players have to be given a chance.

The opposite view is that if we miss top 4 it is a huge step backwards from a team that was starting to get LFC back to where they should be. So apparently the only way to get there is to buy it back as per Man U, Man C, Chelski etc. forget the academy, close it down and use the money to buy success.

It's depressing but LFC have been nowhere since 2005, loosing against MU was massive, loosing against Arsenal and Chelsea will mean no top 4. I thought this very young team was progressing and had a bright future, that still may be true but top 4 means everything for this to happen.

Next year it will be even harder, all out rivals will be stronger. Man U have been crap but manged to hang in there because they have expensive and experienced players, Arsenal now have a larger quality squad that can cope with injuries, these two teams were our direct competitors this year for top 4, both of them have stuttered along the way, we didn't take that chance and it looks like we blew it.
