Anfield-bound? Liverpool send scouts to watch 'great' £36m Brazil maestro. Record deal on the cards?

After five years as an automatic starter at Anfield, Glen Johnson's Liverpool career is (thankfully) drawing to a close, and in the absence of any outstanding candidates to replace him, the Reds are reportedly lining up a summer move for Porto star Danilo Luiz da Silva (aka Danilo).

In February, Portuguese newspaper A Bola, claimed that Liverpool are tracking Danilo, and according to Portuguese daily O Jogo this week:

* Scouts from 31 different clubs attended Porto's 3-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon on Sunday with the intention of running the rule over Danilo.

* Liverpool, Man United, Real Madrid, and Barcelona were among the teams represented.

Some info about Danilo:

* Right back, but can play right wing/defensive-mid.
* 8 goals/14 assists in 124 apps for Porto.
* 16 apps for the Brazil national team.
* 2011: U20 World Cup winner with Brazil.
* 2011-13: Two consecutive league titles with Porto.
* Averages 35 apps per season at Porto.

* Current contract expires in June 2016.
* Has a €50m (£36m) release clause in his contract
* Neymar has advised Danilo to reject a move to Real Madrid.

Danilo is aware of the burgeoning transfer speculation, and when asked recently about his future, he told reporters:

"There are far better-looking faces than mine to be appearing all the time on the front pages of the papers but I know it’s normal that if you play well for this club then other clubs start looking at you".

What kind of player is Danilo? Spanish full-back José Ángel recently hailed the 'great' Brazilian as a 'very attack-minded' player who 'offers a lot going forward' but is also 'great in defence'. He also outlined some further qualities:

"He [Danilo] is really tough to beat, and when he roams further up the pitch he creates space on the wing, from where he fires in pinpoint crosses. He's very similar to Maicon when he was at the top of his game at Inter Milan. He's going to surprise quite a few people".

With such an impressive skillset, it's hardly surprising that the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid are also tracking Danilo, and if it comes down to a straight choice between Liverpool and the two La Liga giants, there's very little chance of the Reds winning the battle.

Manquillo and Flanagan are decent players, but they're (arguably) not significant upgrades on Johnson. As such, a new top-quality right back is arguably a necessity, especially if Brendan Rodgers plans at some point to revert back to a 433/4211.

  1. During that 3-0 match, scouts should have IMO taken note of someone else.

  2. well Barca are out of the way (they can't buy player until 2016) and he's been advised by Neymar not to go to Real, if we go for him this summer there's a real chance of getting him (Neymar is THE star in Brazil and i wouldn't be surprise if his word have an influence on a player who want to play with the Seleção)

  8. He can play CB which Johnson can't so that helps with a system where you play three CB.

  10. From what I've seen and heard about him he seems the ideal type of player for our current system (Daniel Alves type player). Whether he is actually good enough or whether that position is priority is open for debate.

Obviously the likes of Markovic and Ibe who've played RWB are players that usually play further up the pitch, so this signing would release them and maybe give us more balance with Moreno on the left.

For the above reasons a new RWB could be a great idea. However that would potentially mean Coutinho, Lallana, Sterling, Ibe, Markovic and maybe Teixeira for the two 'in the hole' positions. Then again strong competition for places is a good thing. Like I said earlier the question is whether other positions a more of a priority this summer?

  12. Do you really see BR dropping the 3-4-2-1 formation now its working so well? Until we get figured out or there is a massive flaw in the system I don't see BR going back to 433.

We have bigger problems to deal with before RWB - not RB as we are playing back 5 right now. Ibe perfect at RWB IMO. Markovic is not too bad, and Flano can provide cover. LWB we only have moreno. Enrique is awful this season there...

Never mind the 3 dead weights we have in our "attack" - Borini, Lambert, Aspas and of course Balo.. Fix the attack first.

For 36M, we could get Clyne for half of that and IMO he is a better RB especially to the EPL...

  13. Am I the only person in the world who doesn't yet hate Glen Johnson?

That said, Danilo will fit in perfectly on the right of our 3-4-whatever. Or on the right of a 4-4-2. Or on the right of a... He's just a top wing-back. That's all.
