£265k-a-week? Liverpool get another chance to sign 'outstanding' £43m superstar who rejected Anfield in the summer

How the mighty have fallen. Despite an impeccable pedigree, one-time goal-machine Radamel Falcao is struggling to make an impact at Manchester United, yet despite that, there continue to be a steady stream of reports claiming that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is still interesting in signing the £43m-rated Colombian striker.

In February, the The Sunday Times claimed that Liverpool are still 'keeping tabs' on Falcao, and according to the Daily Mail today:

* Liverpool will be 'offered' Falcao on loan this summer.

* The Reds will hold off on a decisions until Champions League football is secure.

In September, Falcao's father confirmed that the striker rejected a move to Anfield:

"Juventus, Manchester City, Liverpool also approached him and Arsenal at the last minute. Fortunately, he ended up at Manchester United, a great team that he has to lead forward."

Then, a few months later, Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim suggested that Falcao should've joined Liverpool over Man United:

"Other clubs needed him more. It would have been easier [for Falcao] to go to Chelsea, Liverpool or even Real Madrid"

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson is against the deal, though, in a recent interview with the BBC, he explained:

"It is almost a case of right club, right player, but wrong time. As things stands, there is no way that signing him at the end of the season makes any sense at all."

11 goals/assists in 26 appearances for Man Utd is a creditable return, but it pales in comparison to Falcao's previous creative output, and it doesn't look like things are going to change any time soon.

Fitness problems notwithstanding, the plain fact is that Falcao - nicknamed 'El Tigre' in Spain - has a better creative output this season than Balotelli, Borini, and Lambert:

Falcao: 11 goals/assists in 26 apps.
Balotelli: 4 goals/assists in 25 apps.
Borini: 2 goals/assist in 16 apps.
Lambert: 3 goals/assists in 28 apps.

Falcao is outperforming LFC's Balotelli, Borini, and Lambert despite the fact he suffered a major ACL injury, which doesn't say much for that fully-fit £31m striking trio.

Falco fits Liverpool's system much better than Balotelli, but I can't see the Reds pursuing this deal, mainly because:

* Falcao is a Manc, and transfers between Liverpool and Manchester United rarely ever happen.

* The Colombian is reportedly on £265k-a-week, which is a disgraceful amount of money, and there's no way Liverpool should pay anything close to that.

That said, I fully expect Falcao to return to form after he's settled back into the game. This season is just about getting back up to speed, and whoever he plays for next season will probably reap the benefits.

  1. The key words is ON LOAN

  2. Reagrdless of his quality and ability to convice in the PL, I can't see this being a reality.

Will moneyball and stats driven FSG sanction £15m for a season for a player we won't even own (i.e. no prospect of a resale value)? Even if we could buy him the following summer he'd be pushing 32 or so.

Currently I wouldn't give in to Sterling/Hendo wage demands, but if pushed would rather use £15m to secure longer term of the club on them. Ideally I'd use the £15m towards bringing in another player who could grow and develop with the team. Any of about 30 names could be listed in that bracket.

  3. "The key words IS"???????

    ReplyDelete
  4. That wouldn't be business between manu and us?

    ReplyDelete
  5. And no, on loan at least..

    ReplyDelete
  6. Not going to happen.

  7. I only skimmed the article there but I am sure Jaimie used the term money grabbing mercenary. Surely.

    ReplyDelete
  8. No he is still a Monaco player.

    ReplyDelete
  9. According to the Liverpool Rumours site, apparently FSG are going to appoint a Director of Football for next season so if true then it will make the managerial situation quite an interesting topic.

  10. Like I have said before Logan they talk sh!te. They hardly ever get anything right. The only thing they are sure about is players we won't sign. Even then they have been known to get it all wrong. The editors don't even agree with each other.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Also regarding Falcao. His agent Mendez has had beef with Liverpool in the past. He was banned at one point if I remember rightly. He is unlikely to do much work with us. But United (Di Maria, Rojo, Valdes etc) or Chelsea (Mourinho, Costa etc) are more likely. Our owners are not keen on the super agents. That is why we will "lose out" on certain players. Not sure it is a bad thing myself.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Actually no.. And I am doing a lot of skimming lately on this site. A shame..

    ReplyDelete
  13. They have regularly got things right. The even broke the news of when Dalglish was sacked before anyone.

The editors do not have to agree with each other to be accurate. Nobody will ever have the correct info but they are the most reliable site out there. Go on there now and ask whether Falcao is going to join and each and every editor will have a laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why was he banned? Sniping?
    Serious question..

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is Liverpool rumors dot com yes? As I was an avid reader of theirs before and around that period. I began to get annoyed when one ed would say one thing and another the opposite. Then their lack of hit rate became very obvious.

As for Falcao you ask anyone with any sense and they will tell you the same thing, I for one. Yet I don't claim to be ITK.

  16. When you read cut and pasted comments too often it can be hard to e interested but to be honest I was being a touch facetious. Just with all the calling of Sterling a mercenary I would have thought that as Falcao is the worst of the lot he would have been called out as such.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Same here. I used to often go on that site and sometimes they said we were interested and sometimes they said we were not. It is still a decent site but I lost faith in those guys after they were adamant we would sign someone in the Jan window in Dalglish's season and we did not.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am trusting my often dodgey memory on a rumor subject to be honest Ivan. From what I remember his demands p!ssed a lot of people off.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Mmmm. No.

A side note... apparently, Lovren is injured as well. That's no Skrtel, Lallana, Gerrard, Lovren, and Sturridge :(

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well I obviously have a different opinion about the site.

Willian and Mkhitaryan were other players which they said to not bank your money on while the BBC said they were done and dusted to LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Allen and Johnson are OK or at least they are not injured

    ReplyDelete
  22. It was the same every window. They would say someone was a cert when they looked a cert in the press and when they didn't sign they would just make an excuse. I ended up thinking they didn't know more than I did. They also used to laud this Macca lad up as being really in the know yet he was often wrong too.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They??? You mean one of them as another was saying it was all done. I was reading it around that time too and they had no information I had not gotten elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh Yeah - Macca.. The number of times he let me down man. I used to be so excited because of the aura around this guy. I remember when he said Bony was a guarantee or when Salah was done only for the deal to implode the next day.

    ReplyDelete
  25. BBC never said Willian and Mkhitaryan were done. They just said we were interested in Mkhitaryan and Willian. If I remember right , there was some guy who said he had a source that was reliable and that Mkhitaryan would sign in the coming days only to go to Dortmund.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Exactly mate. What was it? They made out he was Dr Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  27. A raging mercenary perhaps

    ReplyDelete
  28. Exactly right mate. Like I said, one Ed would say one thing and another the opposite. In A 50/50 someone is going to be right.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If it does change it won't be Simeone as he signed new contract

    ReplyDelete
  30. We need a reliable, durable goal scorer. Is Falcao that man? Who knows, but we do know he'd give us more than Balo, Boro and Lambo.

Probably not the profile of player FSG are after, but neither was Lallana, so who knows. We definitely need to upgrade our striking options, so maybe a loan deal could work if his wage demands come down, which they likely will.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Correctamundo. Moneyball likely scuppers any shot at Rock Me Amadeus.

You bring up a good point re: Sterling and Hendo, though, with which I totally agree. If we don't sign them to new deals we have another Michael Owen situation in losing a player for a fraction of their resale value. Their agents likely are using this as leverage.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lol, you're pretty funny when you're not being butt-hurt over nothing, bravo : )

    ReplyDelete
  33. That said, I give the chances of signing Vienna Calling a big fat 2%. Not just the money, but the questionable health, and the EPL is no place to be playing if you're not sturdy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Appointing Simeone would be an issue due to the language barrier and doubt he would have wanted to join us anyway when he is already at a great club and doing a great job.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'd like to see some congruency in our overall operations and proceedings, just ffs don't hire Commoli again.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Comolli was mainly involved with transfers like he was at Spurs.

A proper DOF will call the shots and then we will have a head coach who will be following his orders.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ed001 is a Chelsea supporter and Ed002 LFC.

At least they do not BS anyone and both have mentioned that they have contacts with the clubs they support.

I doubt they are running that site just for the fun of it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Call the shots how?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Whatever the reasons they are doing it doesn't make them good at it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You've convinced me!

I just KNOW FOR A FACT that we will never be able to compete with the moneybags teams unless every area at the club is working in accord. E.g. the front office players are buying specific players to suit our ingrained system of playing. Only then can we usurp the rich clops ("clops" being used in place of a certain well know, and oft enjoyed part of the female anatomy).

That's why I get so vexed with Brenny boy. He came with a plan, That failed miserably. Then new plan after new plan...and now we have to start over again in the summer coz the 343, seriously? That's not going to work. Not 'til we go and buy players who will make it work, rather than shoe-horning players into a new system coxz your first however many systems were failures.

I typed out a long-assed post on formations yesterday, but saved it. Might post it here. We need congruency, all the way through the club, to ever challenge those who buy success. Arsenal, as much as it pains me, are a shining example of an entire club working in harmony. Currently, we are not, but with FSG as owners, I believe we will get there eventually.

  41. "Director of football" is a term describing a senior management figure at a football club, most commonly used in Europe. The exact nature of the role is often unclear and extremely variable and causes much debate in the sports media. The term is almost exclusively used in the United Kingdom, with "sporting director" or "general manager" often used elsewhere.

The presence of a director of football acts as an intermediary between the manager and the board and may relieve pressure on a manager by handling aspects away from day-to-day coaching, allowing a manager to focus on on-pitch performance. The director may also help to stabilise the club – many examples exist of director stepping in as a caretaker manager on the departure of the manager. The director – often an experienced football figure – may also positively advise a less experienced manager or the board of a less well developed club.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It will be a like Johan Cruyff at Barcelona. He decided what formations, playing style, which players came through the academy etc etc and the head coach will only need to concentrate on training sessions and match day.

    ReplyDelete
  43. If Rodgers stays on next season and is still in complete charge then we will find ourselves in the same situation again as this season or possibly worse. CL qualification is already looking out of the question after spending almost £120m.

    Go figure!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'd rather give 500k to Reus instead of 265 to Falcao.

Note: That doesn't mean I'd give Reus that much. I'd just do that before going anywhere near Falcao.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Didn't he say that Sterling isn't being greedy?

    ReplyDelete
  46. You really don't like Rodgers. I can totally sense the joy you get from the very idea that he might be gone at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I can't see how the DM telling the manager what formations and playing styles will work. For me the DM should have nothing to do with footballing matters other than players signed. What you describe is a manager with more responsibility. I think that would be the wrong way to go and can't see FSG going that way either,

    ReplyDelete
  48. Mate, I used to be Rodgers biggest fan until this season when I realised that he is not the man to take this club forward.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Why do you think Rodgers turned the job down the first time FSG approached him???

    ReplyDelete
  50. Trying to usurp a woman's clops has got me into more trouble over the years than I care to remember.

    ReplyDelete
  51. He didn't want there being a person making signing's for him. He wanted in on the process. Or at least that is what was said in those interviews that you have pt a lot of stock in, in the past. He also probably didn't want someone who he could be quickly replaced by either. But that is just guess work.

    ReplyDelete
  52. He did not want anyone working above him and call the shots and here is the freaking proof.

"I am better when I have control. I am not a power freak. But my point is that I need to feel that I can manage the team and have a direct clear line through to the owners. Once that becomes hazy, for me there is a problem. I don't think it was a model the owners were set on, by any means. I think it is one that people have come to them and suggested. They are still learning about the game.

Now stop trying to come up with excuses etc.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Haha, I didn't just lol, I bol'd (burst out laughing).

Ok, time for some sweet, sweet clops action... ; )

To be honest I don't think Rodgers is a bad manager, he does get it wrong now and then ️but our style of football has become more attractive on the eye. I rate FSG need to back Rodgers 100%. Yes we did spend a lot of money in the summer but I have no doubt some of those players will step up in years to come. Look at Henderson, lots of people rated he was a bad buy at 20 m and now he is proving his worth and we might even be able to get double what we paid for him. Lallana is just suffering from big club syndrome, I reckon next year we will see his real worth. Another player Moreno, you can see he is talented just needs time in the PL. Another player is Markovic, he is having a terrible first season but has had one or 2 moments that shows he has the potential to be good.

Don't forget Origi is returning from Loan at the end of the year, he is a young talented player and before spending 265k on Falcoa would rather give Sterling 150k (which I am totally against). If Liverpool could invest in Keita Diao from Lazio and let him play a few U21 games he could prove to be a world class player. I know we want the title but I reckon for now top 4 for atleast 3 years is what we need to aim for to attract already established players. CL is where the real money is.

    ReplyDelete
  56. If Logan will pardon me speaking for him and if you will extend a similar courtesy for my interjection, I don't think it's so much that we want Brendan gone, we just want way, way better management from whomever holds the prestigious title of head-honcho at our beloved LFC.

Tbh, I don't care who manages us, I just want to see us do well. I think Brenny has shown he's a world-class coach, but lacks the management expertise to lead us back to the promised land. Too many changes of root footballing philosophy.

I hire and fire people. At interview, i ask how they will go about the role. If they then change their approach every few months or so because results have been poor, I mark their card and look to phase them out.

I want people who come in, tell me what needs to be done, how they're going to achieve it and those who then go and do it. I despise the fact that we start so slowly and then are scrambling around to recover.

What happened to the tiki-taka model on which his application, along with the infamous 180 page dossier, was based?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Haha, guilty as charged, I am constantly forgetting about Origi!

Has he scored yet this year...? : ( Fingers crossed he's just checked out mentally, otherwise we've just spent £10 million on Ngog 2.0

    ReplyDelete
  58. Firstly stop talking sh!t and telling me what to do. I am sugar coating nothing. Second what does that prove exactly? Some vague mentions of control and line to the owners. That is literally no "proof" of anything other than the owners not being committed to the idea.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm not sure how you could claim that you think he's shown himself to be a world class coach, but still want him to leave after we got 2nd last year, and are contending for top 4 this year.

Simply put, if he's a world class coach as you suggest, who would you replace him with that will subsequently be an improvement?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Redboondocksaint12:40 am, March 25, 2015

Yea Origi has scored 7goals and 2 assists. He scored a hatrick against Rennes on the 15th of March.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hif first goals in 20-odd games though. Not exactly a world class hattrick either.

But don't think he's one signed 'to lead the line'. From what I've seen, he works hard, chases everything, 'gets in the mixer'. Will create chances I think.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Going to be very harsh if they ban Skrtel. He makes no obvious move to shorten/lengthen his stride to make contact. No different to the Costa one on him that didn't receive a ban.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Wasn't it to do with Simao? Reportedly everything done, deal agreed, and rumour has it Mendez had him get of a plane he'd already boarded to LPL because a better offer came in.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Rodgers is the manager. With a DOF he would be a coach meaning he no longer has full control over the football structure at the club. He will have to go according to what the DOF decides is right.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Man! I was heavily peed off that we didn't get Simao.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I wouldn't avoid proof Logan if if was displayed. It is much closer than the last one for sure though. Does indicate that those were the discussions that were being had but it doesn't actually show what the owners wanted at all. Just what RODGERS wanted. Reading between the lines it does seem to have been talked about but what was wanted by the owners is still unclear. Keep looking though lad, I haven't seen these things before and it is enlightening.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Mate, Rodgers clearly states that he did not agree to take the job on three occasions and wanted full control of football matters. If you cannot take from that that somebody would be working above him then I really do not know what to say any further to you.

    ReplyDelete
  68. He said he wanted clarity and didn't agree until three discussions. Sounds like they were working out the details of the role rather than throwing out what the owners had preplanned. These contract discussions are not just about money and i sounds like there was ambiguity there that needed, as Rodgers said, clarity.

    ReplyDelete
  69. LvG was going to be Liverpool's DoF in charge of BR ,which BR refused and so Ian Ayre was made FD .
