Confirmed: Liverpool can sign 'incredible' €13.5m star for the 'right offer'. No-brainer?

In October, the Agent of FC Cologne star Timo Horn confirmed that Liverpool are interested in signing the 21-year old German 'keeper', and with the summer transfer window fast approaching, the German club has confirmed that Horn can leave for the right price.

In December, the Daily Mail claimed:

"[Horn] has emerged as a potential signing for Liverpool as they look to increase competition for under-fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet".

When asked about Horn's future over the weekend, Cologne's vice-chairman Toni Schumacher told German newspaper Der Spiegel:

"Timo will eventually get his chance in the national team. We are closely controlled by our financial abilities. So when a big club comes with the right offer, we can't say 'no'."

Horn is aware of Liverpool's interest, in December, he told reporters:

"While it's great when you awaken the interest of a club like Liverpool, at the moment it is not the right time for me to consider it.""

Soon after, Horn's agent told reporters:

"We have been told about those [Liverpool] rumours, but no one contacted us directly"

Some info about €13.5m-rated Horn:

* 6'4 goalkeeper in his third season at FC Cologne.
* 27 apps for various German youth teams.
* By October, he'd conceded 7 goals in 9 apps, equalling Bayern's 50 year record.
* Helped Cologne set a new goals-conceded record for a newly promoted team.
* 11 clean sheets in 18 games overall this season.
* Recently went 365 minutes without conceding a goal.
* Current contract expires in 2016.

Horn may be only 21, but his goalkeeping stats are excellent:

* Last season: Conceded only 20 goals in 35 games for Cologne.
* That's only 1 goal conceded every 1.75 games.
* Achieved 18 clean sheets along the way (over 50% of games)
* FC Cologne totals: 74 goals conceded in 86 games (0.8 goals per game)
* 37 clean sheets (43% of games)

Cologne are understandably desperate to keep hold of Horn, and earlier this season, the club's boss, Peter Stoger, enthused:

"He [Horn] does an incredible job. I would be happy if he stays, it would be a good platform for him to develop."

Good competition/replacement for Mignolet?

  1. Or get a new manager and (possibly) perform to the best of our abilities when it matters.

  8. Sorry buddy, I thought you were referring to us in Europe. Nah, money to them is nothing. If only we could've kept United out of the CL for another couple of seasons. Their empire would have crumbled.

  11. Still, 43% clean sheets suggests excellent handling, and minimum spillage.

  12. I'm sure that's improved as he's got older. When he was a young teen working on his game, he probably handed his mum around 10% clean sheets

  13. I just don't know where to start with you lad... This is the most ludicrous post I have ever read, we lost one game get over it. Yes we didn't play well but we are still the form team in 2015. Mancini? Seriously what have you been smoking lad? Ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why do you always compare us to other teams. We don't wanna be the 'new Bayern Munich' or the 'new Barcelona' we are Liverpool lad if you wanna support Bayern Munich or Barcelona then please go ahead.

  15. A new manager would face the same problems Rodgers does. What manager is it that you think will come in and wave this magic wand of success? We don't have the money to buy instant success and these days FFP won't allow it so whoever comes in is going to have to build a squad which is going to take time.
Rodgers could also point out that he wanted players like Costa, Willian, Mkhitaryan, Sanchez, Remy, Salah... The list goes on. For whatever reason the club were unable to secure their services. It's fair enough because the club have a stringent wage and transfer policy but that, along with our extended absence from the champions league, means that we're not competing equally with our rivals for top 4. We therefore have a buy young and develop strategy. Key word in there is develop. That takes time and doesn't happen overnight. The owners will know that.
Do you think with a new manager the club's transfer policy would change? It wouldn't. So with the club having this buy young and develop policy, who do you think would be better than Rodgers to fill the specific managerial and coaching requirements to make this system a success?
I believe Rodgers will bring success to Liverpool but it's not going to happen overnight

  21. Took us apart seems a bit of an overstatement. We were poor for sure but you wonder if Moreno was not so poor on the day could we have gotten something from the game? No one comes off after ten minutes, every knows you sometimes need a bit of time to find your feet but he never did. Half time would have been fair.

  27. Charlie Austin has scored more top league goals than Vietto! Get real. He might be the real deal, he might be Andy Carroll (who I actually have a lot of time for, good target man for a 'direct' team, just not at LFC).

I'm one of Studge's harshest critics, he does need to work harder. And when fully fit he does. He just seems to be playing within himself at the moment, perhaps wary of overstretching / pushing himself too hard.

You'd have one of the best finishers in the league, arguably in world football (when fully fit) traded in for a kid with just over 6 months top league experience? Studge's strike rate is about 65%, Vietto's is about 40%.

I've got some magic beans you might be interested in...

  28. In fairness to them some of their passing was crisp but they utilised the big lad a lot and had men around him to pick up the second ball. It happened a lot not rarely at all. It was an effective tactic but they were not passing through us. They got it in our half with the long ball, overlaoded our wingbacks and created three v twos. It was creative for sure. There were times they passed it around the edge of the half and it was those times that our lack of pressing was painful. We lacked in a few areas and Rodgers takes some of the blame for that for sure but to talk about their performance as being much better than ours in anything other than the first twenty minutes is just ridiculous. We were genrealy poor woth some awful performances. They were slightly better with at least one terrific performance. That was about the difference, Their best player went up against our worst on the day and they won by one goal.

  29. Plus Wayne Enterprises. Sh!t have I given it away?

  30. His handling has undoubtedly improved with practice too...

  31. I like Moreno for his attacking desire, love when he surges forward.

But far from his first bad game defensively. He was at one time topping the stats for defensive errors in the league, about the time Brendan took him out for a while. His numbers won't have improved after yesterday. Wasn't just positionally, made some shocking passes and giveaways too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I only read the first sentence and figured that out...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Based solely on his performance yesterday, a can of coke would be a significant upgrade to Moreno. I believe he's our man long-term, but perhaps he needs a spell on the bench to motivate him. 50% pass completion is f****** ludicrous.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If I'm understanding you correctly, Sturridge is a fantastic goal scorer but his days are numbered and Brendan is selling the big issue?
Seriously though, Sturridge scored and created plenty of goals all of his own last season, it will be a huge waste of a potentially 'world class' talent if we can't get his injuries under control.
Hopefully the latest one isn't too bad, or perhaps Brendan is even taking a leaf out of moaniho's book, costa injured again, there's a surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Must admit, although I like Moreno and want him to be a success, he hasn't shown a whole lot yet. I think his link up play can be good, especially with Coutinho, - it has caused other teams problems but not in enough games.
Hopefully it's just a slight lack of confidence at the moment and he will progress, - would like to see him taking players on a bit more - in a similar fashion to Ibe was doing on the right.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Took him what, seven years was it?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Injury freak? One of us must be drunk,... maybe I'm taking your posts out of context or something. Surely Sturridge scoring the only goal for us against utd must have helped the team?
Don't get me wrong, you can't ignore his injuries and going forward he may well find himself to no longer be our main striker, but in my opinion calling him a goal hanger and inferring he is solely to blame for our dip in form is ridiculous. His goal to game ratio speaks for itself.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hang on a minute, what's your opinion on Stirling...?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bugger, I didn't see any of this coming in the air tonight. Managed to resist the urge to bite at the inevitable mud slinging up until now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. They did win the FA Cup in 1990 but finished 11th that year. Hardly brilliant. Rodgers finished 2nd in his 2nd year. Utd finished the 1980s just above the relegation zone. In today's game he would have been out on his arse

    ReplyDelete
  41. Dammit, I read the whole thing, then squinted a bit and read it again just to make sure.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Brilliant, I'm getting the hang of it now - read up to "we lost one game get over it" and am sure that I would wholeheartedly agree with the rest of your post.
Well said that man. Time for bed I feel.

  43. Mignolet must have been peppered with shots then according to your view of the game? The only save I can remember from him was the penalty aside the two goals. I think the difference was in taking their chances, they scored their only real chances.
Don't get me wrong, they deserved to beat us but had Lallana scored it would have been a very different 2nd half, and for all their superiority 1st half, they only had the Mata goal to show for it, something we have been guilty of doing in the past too

    ReplyDelete
  44. You can't win anything pssing that poorly, and Allen's inability to pass longer than 20 yards allowed them to condense the play and press us in the midfield. SG actually should have played from the start to give them something to worry about with his long range passing, they would have worried more about leaving the space behind. Look at how many played poorly. Moreno. Lallana. Allen. Coutinho, Sterling ,even Sturridge, goal aside. Can't win with that many substandard players

    ReplyDelete
  45. Couldn't wait, could they?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Your long ball version of events supports Jocks view, but it doesn't apply to the match I watched.
I wanted Man Utd play it long to Marouane Fellani more because their possession would have broke down and the control stats wouldn't have been so one sided.
"They got in our half with long balls" On a few occasions you're right, but if someone says repeatedly it would be exaggerating.
It was played long to Fellani 5 times in the first half. One of them on 14 mins he controlled it on his knee (not exactly a Tony Pulis Stoke long head height ball) and another on 45 mins which was controlled on his thigh.Long ball average of one every 9 minutes. That's not a lot in my book when you have a dominant 60%+ of first half control.
Although they used Fellani as a target man they weren't the typical head height long balls launched to him.Of the other 3 one was chest controlled on 38 mins and 2 were headed balls.
If I missed more long balls you Jock or whoever else noticed please correct me.Man Utd played some very good possession football.

  47. Mate please stop, you're making yourself look like a fool. Sturridge is a fantastic finisher with exceptional dribbling skills IMO. This formation just hasn't suited him because he needs link up. That's the reason why he scored so much with Suarez. Unfortunately I don't think Balo looks like the player to pair up with him. He's still rusty believe it or not, and injuries are unfortunately a part of the game. Get over it. We don't need to replace him with anyone, let alone sell Sterling for ''50m pounds''.

Stop looking towards the game as if it's FIFA. It isn't the slightest

    ReplyDelete
  48. You call the performances against Swansea and Southampton wins? I do too, but was very surprised at how badly we got outplayed those games.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wait. He plays in a better league? Take away barca and madrid and then what? The league is a joke. How can any team in Spain get anywhere when the two top teams get paid more money in tv deals. It's a farce. Athetico went well last year . Team pretty much gets ripped apart. But I do like vietto. And we should buy him.

    ReplyDelete
  50. To something equally as ineffective : (

I was hoping he'd take Moreno off, as he was so far off his game and mentally missing it was a detriment to the team.

  51. At least get us Robben then.

  52. Are they brothers? They do look similar

    ReplyDelete
  53. Nearly...

Just watch those scummy, disgusting, long time blights on English football disappear over the horizon next year under their proper manager and oodles of cash.

Our chance to dent and damage their ambitions long-term was by keeping them out of the CL again this year. We play alright at Utd, but come away with nothing.

So, at Anfield, with a way of playing that we know can trouble the scum, what does BR do? Play a different way and 90 minutes later, we're out of contention for the CL, not just this year, but now Utd will recover and go from strength top strength.

Football wise, it's my second to worst nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  54. True and unfortunately that still might happen to BR

  55. Excellent post, some great points and well written.

I love what Rodgers does off the pitch, in terms of player development. And he is a good fit for the strategy with which our owners are running the club. I don't disagree with the business model and fully understand the difficulty each and every EPL manager has, in their own respective ways.

But, and this is my entire point: I've seen us out-played and out-thought too many times now, with very little in terms of strategic/tactical recovery, to believe that Rodgers is a good enough manager to get us where we want to go.

Fabulous coach, undoubtedly. Manager? not so much.

Not seeing the tactical acumen or strategic foresight for me to believe he's a suitable candidate to manage one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Nothing on his CV suggests that and almost three tears into the job, we're still seeing "rookie" mistakes.

  56. "Replacing him with Enrique is like needing heart surgery and having it replaced with a can of coke."

    Awesome line!

There was a time I really liked Enrique. Pace, aggression, good control, decent ball in, good work rate, decent size etc.

But, injury after injury has blighted him.

Another way of putting it, not that your analogy lacked anything, would be to say that bringing Enrique in for Moreno is the equivalent of running out of bullets and throwing the gun at them... Desperation mode personified!

Oh well, there's always Glen Johnson lol

  57. Remember Mourinho saying after Inter's CL win (having lesser possession), "Bayern can keep the ball, we will keep the cup". Look at his achievements today. Watching good football is pleasing to the eye, but unless it gets results it becomes irrelevant. A person may hate parking-the-bus tactic, but it is a legit tactic which may very well win you the game. Try to beat it or deal with it.

As long as Liverpool wins the game, I couldn't care less about football ethos, as cup wins matter to me the most. And before anyone asks me to start supporting some other club or calls me a gloryhunter, I would ask him to name a person who wouldn't want his club to bask in glory. And yes, just because I want "Liverpool" to win by hook or by crook doesn't make me any less of a LFC supporter.

Why am I telling all this, you ask? Because I support Hamann's views here. I still remember Chelsea's game last season against us where Mou used timewasting tactics right from the beginning to get under our skin, and boy he did. The mark of a good manager / football team is how to counter those tactics, and not play your usual game and later moan about the loss.

To summarize, using Lambert is a good plan B IMO, if it helps you win the game. Even Kenny used a similar plan with Carroll.
