Carra raves: I'd 'love to see 'brilliant' £13m midfielder 'at Liverpool'. Sign?

Earlier this week, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher urged Brendan Rodgers to sign perpetual sick-note Theo Walcott (Ugh), and now, he's revealed his admiration for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

Speaking to Eurosport on Thursday, Carra hailed McCarthy as a 'brilliant player', and admitted:

“If there was one player I could take from Everton to Liverpool it would be James McCarthy. I love him as a player, and love watching him, but to be classed as one of the best in the league he needs more goals and assists".

McCarthy - who cost Everton £13m - has rejected a move to Anfield THREE times, in the past, so the ship has surely sailed on this deal:

2007: The BBC reported that McCarthy rejected an offer from Rafa Benitez. Explaining the youngster's decision, his Agent, Bill McMurdo explained: "They [LFC] agreed to meet Hamilton's asking price, but he has decided that he wants to stay for another year. I can't fault his judgement. He has only just left school and is from a close family"

* 2010: McCarthy chose Wigan over the Reds, a decision that pleased Roberto Martinez, who enthused: "I have always been a big admirer of James, and I was delighted when he made that rather strange decision not to go to a top, top club like Liverpool. I think that decision is being proved right now.”

* 2011: Liverpool entered talks to sign McCarthy in 2011, and a source close to the talks said: "It [the transfer deal] is 90 per cent done, all sides now seem to accept it is going to happen and it's a matter of everyone trying to get the best deal"

Speculation over the €10m-rated midfielder arose again during the January 2013 transfer window, and when asked about interest from Liverpool and Arsenal, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez conceded that when the time comes, 'we'll never stop him [McCarthy] from leaving'.

The last thing Liverpool need is yet another midfielder who doesn't score or create enough goals, and McCarthy's creative record is pitiful:

* 2 goals/4 assists in 68 games for Everton.
* 8 goals/8 assists in 133 games for Wigan.
* Goal every 20 games | Assist every 16.7 games.
* Goal/assist every 9.1 games.

Thanks but no thanks, and after rejecting Anfield three times, McCarthy doesn't (IMO) deserve another chance to play for Liverpool.

  1. What the hell Carragher? You advise Liverpool to rethink their transfer strategy, i.e. pursue top name players...and then you suggest this guy?

    ReplyDelete
  2. We already have Allen we dont need another average James running around if anything the United game proved top quality is needed in the midfield if we want top 4.

    ReplyDelete
  3. If Liverpool wants to do business with Everton ,surely it has to be for Ross Barkley and John Stones

    ReplyDelete
  4. Thank goodness Jamie Carragher is NOT Liverpool manager .
If Liverpool had to buy all his " 'brilliant player's ",Liverpool would be in League one

    ReplyDelete
  5. Comment snap! I completely agree.I'm thankful Jamie Carragher joined Sky and didn't take up a coaching role to eventually take over.
He should never be given the Liverpool job with his substandard transfer targets.

  6. you speaking rubbish 1-0 is nothing. Many many teams have abled to win in the 2nd half.

    ReplyDelete
  7. yes that's the truth. Let's not hide Gerrards selfish act.

    ReplyDelete
  8. So let's put things into some perspective

    UTD's remaining fixtures
    Villa (H), City (H), Che (A), Eve (A), WBA (H), Palace (A), Ars (H), Hull (A)

    They are 5 points ahead

    LFC
    Ars (A), New (H), Hull (A), WBA (A), QPR (H), Che (A), Palace (H), Stoke (A)

24 points left to play for but need to make up 5 points and then also get ahead of them. They have a better goal difference too so what we need from them is to pretty much lose three matches and we will then have to win 7 out of the 8. Arsenal and Chelsea away not working in our favour.

4th place is in UTD's hands now. We also need to worry about Spurs and Southampton breathing down our necks. Would be great if we can finish 4th but think we are going to have to settle for 5th or 6th.

  9. And pay stupid money like £40m for him? No thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Surely if you want top players you must pay or be happy with Allen, Borini, Balo ,Aspas, Lallana.Lambert and Lovern and say in europa league

    ReplyDelete
  11. CARRA has a point =WE NEED GRIT =Lallana is like a fairy and Sterling is a big headed schoolboy who needs sorting out =our next 2 signings must be HARD MEN = like Diego Costa = Superb attitude FOR his TEAM - LOVE STEVIE G DUMP RAHEEM and HENDERSON = SIGN UP OR GO NOW

    ReplyDelete
  12. You have absolutely no means of justifying that statement. None. It's not within in the realm of possibility. So why post it? Ah, yes. Reactionary sensationalism.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Inconsistency is still part of his game. In fact, it's probably the only part of his game that's been consistent.

    ReplyDelete
  14. If we dont make 4th - hope we dont make Europa League either -GO FOR THE TITLE AND FORGET STUPID EUROPA LEAGUE United were nothing special we played crap PREMIER lEAGUE IS CRAP Cant wait to see MAYWEATHER V MANNY -now theRE IS class

  18. No, not really. In the context of playing against Chelsea in the biggest match of year, against the undisputed masters of parking the bus, going behind 1-0 is a lot bigger handicap than it normally is. Of course dropping points in the 3rd last game was more crucial! It put the title back in City's hands! Before the Chelsea game, we had control of our destiny. After we lost, we didn't anymore. Even if we beat Palace, the title was still in the hands of City, who would have only had to have beat a measly West at home to secure it. Of course you equally get 3 points against CFC or W Brom, but the stakes are lot higher in some games than others.

  21. He should have rather said nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  22. For £40m we can go get Lars Bender and use the rest of the cash towards a top striker. We do not need Barkley and overpaying again is not an option i.e. Lallana.

1st he goes for public declare we can be top 2 is stupid ! Can raise team morale??? or pile up pressure???

2nd his 343 and his personal using is too predictable base on last match ! LVG totally get a formula how to deal with him !

3rd Fail to control player temper ! I dont mind losing due to tactics weakness but losing with bad attitude that make me as lfc fan shame !

    ReplyDelete
  26. How come no one is laying into moreno he was at fault for the first goal I thought he was terrible don't think he's up to standard.don't know what brenden Rogers sees in him

    ReplyDelete
  27. That was supposed to pay for footwear for the wedding I am attending.
Now who is going to pay- Brendan for not being on par with Van Gaal, Steven for letting us down or Jaimie for predicting we will win?

    ReplyDelete
  28. We just did not seem to want to go at them in the first half and they in return steamrolled us. The formation was not the issue. Rodgers got his tactics completely wrong. Even vs Swansea we were not worthy winners but sometimes you need luck on your side. UTD were the better team hands down.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Villa are always better away. Chelsea, City, Arsenal and (arguably)Everton are better than them. Hull, WBA and Palace could take a point or two. And we can win all of our remaining fixtures.

    ReplyDelete
  30. We did want, but couldn't due to tactics.

    ReplyDelete
  31. wow, at first I didn't agree with you at all. but the capslock really conviced me.

    good point.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Relying on one of your worst enemies to allow you to finish ahead of them when they are in the driving seat?

Most teams in the top 10 have been better than UTD this season but it is the points that matter at the end of the day and they are on par with City and Arsenal when it comes to points so you are hoping for better days if you think they are going to sit back and let us take 4th from them now. Would be great but I cannot see it happening.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just saying that I expect manu to lose more than 9 points.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And you also believe we can win all our remaining matches...

    I admire your optimism!

    Arsenal away
    WBA away
    Chelsea away
    Stoke away

I quite honestly do not see us walking away with maximum points from these four fixtures.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Apology? What apology? Saying, "I take responsibility" isn't an apology, in my book. It's basically the same as saying, "I did it."

An apology would have been more like this: "I'd like to apologise to the club/fans..."

Or even a simple, "I'm sorry."

It takes a big man to apologise...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Don't understand people who say I don't believe my team can win this match before it started. Even if you are Palace fan..

    ReplyDelete
  37. How many games for Steven, and does it include FA cup?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Let's see how it pans out. What I can tell you is that if we drop 4 more points then we better hope that our goal difference is better than UTD's.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Straight red card = 3 match ban Cup and League.

    ReplyDelete
  40. And after Arsenal loses against us they have Burnley away fighting for their life. It is far from over..

    ReplyDelete
  41. They do not have Burnley.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Nothing additional for severity of it? Guess we are the only ones here..

    ReplyDelete
  43. The FA would have said by now whether they are taking things further. Have not seen anything.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It is pointless worrying what Arsenal do. They will finish top 2nd or 3rd.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why? We can beat them, right? And than they draw vs Burnley and we are point behind. And they play manu which will work for us either way, and they have chelsea too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You don't need to agree with my opinion, but you shouldn't dump on it. Keep it friendly, we're all of the same allegiance here : )

    ReplyDelete
  47. That is where the problem is. Relying on a team who you have to play away and they are 6 points ahead of us. We need to make up like 12 points to get ahead of meaning they have to drop 12 points.

Forget about City and Arsenal. the only place left to play for is 4th.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Look, if you're Steven Gerrard you've built up a lot of credit with the supporters of this club and deservedly so. He was wrong to do it, he's accepted and admitted that, case closed as far as I'm concerned. He still is and will forever remain a legend of this club.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Of course it is a problem for Christ sake. I aam saying it is solvable.. Yes, 4th, but I am saying Arsenal could drop to 5th.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Now this is definitely an opportunity missed but we had to lose sometime. The writing was on the wall against Swansea where we only showed up in the second half and as I pointed out then, we didn't get away with the same against United. We still have Arsenal to play though and United have been blowing hot and cold so they might still drop enough points for us to overtake them. It's always a worse position to have to rely on others though. We got ourselves in that situation last year against Chelsea and Palace and no one did us any favours then either. All that said, if or when we don't finish inside the top four it is because we lost too many points in the first half of the season because of another terrible summer of transfers leaving us with no striker for six months.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Like I said earlier. I admire your optimism ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Moreno for me just has not performed for us. Other than the super goal against Spurs, he is just an ordinary player with no standout qualities. Look at him play closely and see what I mean: collects the ball, move forward a little, stops whenever an opponent is in front of him, then plays the ball back again. He just doesn't take risk to beat the man, lack of skills or courage I am not sure. Defensive deficiency is often exposed big time.

    ReplyDelete
  53. and you only remember him for his bad mistakes? Without him, we may not have seen Liverpool lift the CL trophy in our lifetime

    ReplyDelete
  54. Needless to say I hate your pessimism . But as long we both hope I am right...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Jaimie, I gotta agree with you. The 1st half goal was conceded when Stevie G was not on the field. The 2nd goal was also conceded when he was not on the field (yes Stevie is not responsible for the goal although he could have helped). If there is any blame, it's just schoolboy defending from Moreno who LVG has target as our weak link

    ReplyDelete
  56. Agreed. Im liking the link with Walcott. I think he will do well for us. I imagine a front line of Walcott and Sturridge would make any defense sweat.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Class two people who cant count to 20 beating each others brains in to earn millions which a few years after retirement they find out they are broke and have brain diseases most tragic sport ever.,

    ReplyDelete
  58. I have always said it and gotten slack elsewhere, but for us to be counted we need Raheem, Allen , Gerrard and Hendo to be consistent (or to be replaced). These guys form a core (due to design or injury of other players)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Liverpool's attitude in that first 30 minutes was disgusting. Mirror image of first half against Swansea. We said they must not play that way against United. They did the unthinkable and did. Idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Surly keeping Martin kelly would of been a better option than getting someone in from Spain that doesn't know English culture with no premiership experience at least martin was was home grown with experience

    ReplyDelete
  61. Following on from JK's point about previous Anfield hardmen Ruddock, Tommy Smith and Big Ron Yeats, I think Sami Hyppia went one or more seasons without even picking up a yellow. Amazing to think a central defender could go a whole season without being carded.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Frankly it should not be anything to do with BR. He is an employee too like Sterling and I doubt he is involved in the contract negotiations. Though I understand his interest in getting Sterling signed up but he should shut up now and focus on his own job.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Stop twisting my words ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Agree your post totally except because it was the team above us it cost us three points ....

    ReplyDelete
  65. Everyone can hope but not everyone is able to face reality.

    ReplyDelete
  66. In Tommy Smith's day you could break someone's leg and only get a sidewards look from the Ref. These days Smith would get sent off during the warm up

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yet we played better with 10 players than we did with 11 players.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Excellent points - and something I've been voicing for sometime now. Shame it take a bad result against Man U for BR's inadequacies to be shown up to the majority of fans who have grown accustomed to the last 3-year roller-coaster ride.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Stop telling posters they speak 'rubbish'. One more post like this and you'll be banned. Remain civil.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Aye, players were a lot harder in those days. Souey can never hide his astonishment at the feigning of injury in todays game. It totally baffles him. And then there's the case of the keeper who played with a broken neck! The name Bert Trautman springs to mind, but that's just as likely to be my grandads milkman as it is the player.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Rather than blame SG, I would ask the question why didn't BR change his tactics after 10-15 minutes, and especially after the goal.

    Why wait until half time?

    ReplyDelete
  72. You like using the phrase "speaking rubbish" and on the surface of things, yes, 1-0 is nothing, but if you actually saw the match, the way we played in that first half was quite possibly the worst we played all season. The game vs Man Utd at Old Trafford, although we lost 3-0, we dominated Man Utd and were it not for De Gea, we would have won that game 6 or 7-3. Compare that with this game and De Gea didn't have a save to make, the only time we really threatened we were either off target with Lallana and Coutinho, he gathered up fairly easily, with Sterling and Skrtel and he picked the ball out of his net with Sturridge. This is simply not good enough, we should have worked him a hell of a lot more.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hello Orme, my fellow gambler.I was so confident of a win, I nearly broke my tradition of not betting on Liverpool. But I stopped putting money on us for obvious reasons... It clouds my judgement.
I usually do 6, seven or 8 team accumulators across different leagues.Mid level bets that give me very good winning returns.I also go outside of football and bet on other sports too.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Who else would you put there? Markovic has been played there, but I would rather him further up the pitch, he is faster than Sterling, Lallana although isn't as fast as Sterling is a lot quicker with the ball at his feet and so needs to be further up the pitch for us to get the best out of him. Would you really play Johnson there?

    ReplyDelete
  75. No we didn't win, but how do you know that we would have with Gerrard playing from the start? We have played well without him in the side many times this season and why change a winning formula?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Had it not been for Mata's freak second goal, we would have gotten a point with 10 men.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I would agree with the sentiment that BR is not the best tactical manager. Yes, he has tried a few different formation, and yes he's managed an impressive run of victories in 2015

BUT, you need to analyse this performance now over 3 years, and in the bigger matches he has been found out. He screwed up the first 3 months of the season, and we've been on a roller coaster ride to catch up.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yep, I'll echo what Neutral Red and Glen said in agreeing with you.

BR got the job based on his 180 page dossier and tiki taka model. How long did that last? We abandonded the ineffective tiki taka and were playing counter attacking football within a few months. Since then, we've had how many different new philosophies and strategies?

There's an old saying that I can't get out of my mind when I look at what Rodgers says and does: "If you chuck enough crap against the wall, some of it will stick"...which roughly translated into context means, BR is winging it. Making it up as he goes along.

The lack of tactical nous and ability to change mid-flow are shocking for a manager of such a prestigious club as ours.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Really good analogy and summary :-)

    ReplyDelete
  80. How have we been on a roller coaster ride though? Through the tactics of Rodgers, we went from being in poor form with fans saying we would finish bottom half of the table to the most in form team in the league and knocking on the door of 4th spot. It was always going to be hard initially without Suarez, with new players needing to settle, with Sturridge out for a big portion of the season and yet he showed the tactical nous to change a formation that wasn't working into one that clearly has. Since our defeat to Man Utd at Old Trafford, if you want to say we have been on a roller coaster ride, then we have only been going up and up and up.

    ReplyDelete
  81. As his 3rd substitution, Lucas should have come on for Allen.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Agreed on the CL teams. As for us, I can't see us holding off Spurs. They have a better manager and a form goalscorer.

Imho, we may or may not eclipse Soton, which, after robbing them of 3 of their best players, along with them also losing 2 fullbacks (and not cheaply, either), is a total disgrace and a signal that our club is being run by...less than worthy men.

    ReplyDelete
  83. when last did we beat Arsenal at the emirates?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Is he chucking enough crap against the wall or is he able to adapt? The best managers in the world can adapt. We started the season with a poor run of form and were leaking goals left right and centre, Rodgers then changed our formation and we have kept more clean sheets than not, this tells me that he has tactical nous, as opposed to lacking tactical nous. It's funny, when we are winning games, when we are going on a run of form like we have been, where are the boo boys? As soon as we lose a match they come out of the woodwork.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Lest I remind you of the Carroll debacle, or having no cover for Sturridge this year. BR is at fault for getting LFC to a poor start only to recover the situation in the 2nd half of the year.

This pattern has repeated itself (in each of BR's 3 years we've nearly accumulated twice as many points in the 2nd half of the season as the 1st half).

    QED: 3-year roller-coaster ride.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Agreed on the tactics, he's exposed time and time again in that dept, imho.

The only thing I would accept him telling me if I were a board member questioning whether he is tactically inept is if he were to say that he wanted to try to stamp our game on them, rather than make any adjustments to stifle them.

That'd be the only excuse I'd accept. It's good to try to impress our game on the opposition, but man, you need to change things quicker when it's obvious they are not working and we are being dominated.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I've been a constant critic of BR for almost 2 years now. 2 years because I was willing to give BR time in the 1st season.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Exactly.

We usually start the season poorly under BR (2 out of 3, including one season with one of the worlds best players) because his strategy/selections etc are flawed.

Then, when we've fallen WAY behind the pace and are being slated, he changes system.

Then, playing our new system, we go on a run of games and move up and start to get lauded...

...then people think BR's a great tactician.

Then, we come up against a good team, get found out, and it's back to the drawing board, new system, new tactics...rinse and repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Exactly. It worries the heck out of me when I watch us being dominated...with BR looking on...doing nothing to improve things.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Allen is an up and down player and should not be starting anymore. He was good against city the other week today he looked worst. Allen marking fellaini is like ant contesting with horse

    ReplyDelete
  91. With respect, conceding goals is much worse than having a man sent off.

    ReplyDelete
  92. The fact is, we didnt play well in the first half once more, some of our players were not in great form. That is more of a throw back to the swansea game. In my opinion there are some changes needed for the Arsenal game, Marko in for stirling at right wing back and if Flano fit put him in at left wing back and give Moreno a break, or Flano right and Marko left.
I have been very disappointed in Stirlings contribution over the last few games.

We have 8 games left and if we can go back to our pre Swansea form starting at Arsenal, we will get into the top 4 i feel sure.
Just because we lost a match to the scum, where we also had a ref atkinson a complete arsehole, who should of sent off Jones, shouldnt have given them a pen, maybe missed the fact that Mata was offside for their second goal, not absolutely sure but he looked it to me, and generally gave us very little. That doesnt mean that our season is over though and as for Gerard he was fired up, thought Herera had come in showing his studs and he over reacted, the fact that the spaniard then started crying and whinging in front of atkinson when he realised there was a chance of getting Gerard in the shit, was also not very nice.
Gerard made a mistake simple as that, all players make them.

  93. 4eva LFC, LFC 4eva12:22 pm, March 23, 2015

IMO I think I have watched enough games to say that no matter what we all think SG made a mistake. But for me playing a game of such importance I was really disappointed when I saw Stevie and Johnson on the bench, sometimes you need to balance out your team, for me we had not enough experience in the middle, I would have loved to see SG, Lucas and Lallana with Hendo and Cortinho in front of them with Studge and Sterling. This would have been more entertaining. Allen and Ballo need to go Mereno was terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  94. we lose one game and now its lets get shut of the manager time. I am so sick of this shite.

    ReplyDelete
  95. why are you critisising? we came second last season, played great football and we may well come 3rd this season and maybe win the FA cup, What do you want!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. What about all the trophies he won practically single handedly? Some people have a short memory. .and by the way you can purposely do something wrong and still apologise! !

    ReplyDelete
  97. I want a worthy manager for our beloved club and I'm now convinced BR is not the man. I respect your loyalty, though

    ReplyDelete
  98. he did apologise to the club and fans, you want to try listening to what he says.as for PS Gill, how long have you been a Liverpool supporter 6months!!!

    ReplyDelete
  99. You could take a machette onto the pitch in Tommys early days and yes these days Smithy would get a red card during the handshakes.

    ReplyDelete
  100. To be fair I've been watching Kondogbia for a while , way before Arsenal game. He just has what no midfielder has in our team. Can is good but I suspect he'll want to bomb on & I'm not sure of his recovery pace. We need a bit of nasty no nonsense bite, aka Mcmahon & Souness. Interestingly when we did away with them & became the spice boys we won nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Well, the one Everton player I'd take is John Stones. Nothing wrong with McCarthy but he's not enough of an upgrade.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I hope Skrtel has his collar turned up and is wearing dark glasses and a wig.......

    ReplyDelete
  103. I wonder if Ander Herrera said something bad about Phil Collins' music. That would help it make more sense.

In all seriousness though, United seemed to be making a point to going after Stevie right away. In the 40 seconds that he was on the pitch, Mata and Herrera both went in hard on him in the middle of the pitch. Stevie lost his cool, but I think that ManU strategy is getting lost in the weeds in the following incident (the stamp). I was pleased to Atkinson recognize that by giving Herrera the yellow card.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Glen Johnson Should pay It.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Or Henderson. But I agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Reality is time will tell and that time is coming soon enough.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Over paying for a striker must be you said we could have offered 41 million for Lacazette that was over paying lots at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  108. sorry you you know just like Gerrard out of frustration step on the foot and never remain civil we too out of frustration react like that at times!! Apologise!

    ReplyDelete
  109. I was not saying that we should pay that for him. All I meant was we had the money, CL and we finished 2nd the previous season which was in our favour to try for top striker.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I have said on many occasions that our poor first half of the season will come back to bite us and have not changed my mind about that. We have been in superb form for many weeks but still believe it came too little too late.

Now it is about relying on other teams to take points of UTD. Each win for them now is a 6 pointer.

    ReplyDelete
  111. We would have had a better chance of winning had Gerrard been on form the start for 3 reasons

    1) Allen was always going to be out played by Fellaini and

    2) Gerrard was so pumped up for his last game against MU , he needed to be there from the start .We all remember what happened when Bornini came on as a sub and got a red card,

    3) Their was NO leadership in the pitch in the first half .

    ReplyDelete
  112. Good luck with that, to coin a phrase

  113. What are those accumulators, how does that work? Is that like a system, with minimum games needed in order to win?

  114. Yees, but not that haha to me...

  116. Steven Gerrard was perfectly right when he said he let everybody down. Yes, we had an awful first half, Utd. outplayed us, they took the game to us and completely disrupted our flow. We could not get a foothold in the game until about 38 minutes. The end to the second half picked up a bit and at only 1-0 I thought it was still all to play for. 45mins (added time) is a lot of football, an awful lot. And as we saw against Swansea we can change it up and pull a win out, turning it around completely. Gerrard let everyone down, yes we played better with 10 than 11, but we were chasing the game, I think we could have chased the game better with 11 than 10.
Collectively we got what we deserved, everyone was disappointing, the one player who could leave with his head held high was Sakho, he was again a monster in defence. But we did not deserve to win and no matter how you slice it, our second half push would have been easier with Gerrard on the pitch rather than 1 less player.

  117. Not to sure about just a hiccup for next year .
CL will increase the money to clubs by 25% to the tune of +=1.25 billion .
Bye bye Sterling , Not sure if it will be the player or his wages ??

  118. CL out the window .for next year .

  121. Betting accumulators are multiple bets made in one bet.For example a 6 team accumulator means you need to get six results spot on to win. That doesn't have to be only football. You can mix sports.
However if you screw up one bet getting five predictions right, you lose money.
The plus is doing accumulators gives you much better odds.Getting a higher return for a win.
Typically I put £10 or 20 on accumulators. With five, six, seven or eight bet accumulators you can make roughly anything from £100-400 back.Even if you bet for the favourites to win.

  122. Like yourself RAY I can't wait. This will be the legacy fight that stamps Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao into boxings record books as all time greats.
I really couldn't give two hoots which other fighters they had on their boxing CV.I would've put question marks against both being true hall of famers if they retired without fighting.
It should've happened five years ago, but better late than never.

  123. Good call. Imho, Spurs do us as well, in-form goalscorer and half-decent manager, leaving us to battle Soton for 6th : (

  124. I cant seem to find the bit of the apology where he states Herrera was sliding in at him studs up .... Ref bottled it with cards all game, one example.

Joe Allen steps across .. Yellow card
    30 seconds later
Phil Jones does whatever WWE move through Lallana .. No card?!?
Kept happening we tackle Card they tackle ... carry on, then they wonder why SG comes on fuming.

No excuse but Red for both IMO

  125. Don't even class last year as his fault, last season we didn't win the title because of Kolo,... simple

Look at it, he got brought in so that the inexperienced Wisdom wouldn't be messing up and letting in poor \ own goals, that's exactly what Kolo did, go back and look how many points his direct mistakes cost us. Guarantee its more than the 3 SG lost.

Also SG slip?? Watch again options were on Mamma (I think) passed it to SG when other options were on and Gerrard wasnt expecting the pass at all, he was looking up reading the game.

  126. Ive said it before and I'll say it again ... Moreno looks as dumb as a bunch of spanners, he has quality on the ball just no Idea when to do what

  128. Quality post, all of it, but this bit stands out:

"Man Utd have taken 10 points from 5 games between the top 5 we have 4 points from 6 games"

Houllier, whilst supplying an almost unwatchably boring brand of football, knew to keep things tight in the big games, not give it away and try to nick a goal.

  129. CL may not be as lucrative as you think. RM got 57m euros for winning it last season (interestingly PSG were 2nd highest on 54m as they were the only French club in knockouts). Not sure about posting links on this site but google "Champions league prize money", it's one of the few things UEFA are transparent about. We'll probably get 30m or so for this season. (English clubs get more for reaching same stage due to the power of English broadcast rights.) Next seasons winners, depending upon what country they're from, will get about 60-75m euros.

CL is decent money, but the new BT/Sky TV deal means an additional £110m/130m euros or so per season for us. With or without CL, LFC will get more money.

Money lost from CL isn't the issue, it's attracting the top quality players that want CL football. It may also be the same thing that decides whether Sterling stays or goes.

  130. You and I simply are not going to agree on this. Gerrard's slip was more crucial than the comical back pass that Toure gifted to Anichebe that cost us 2 points against WBA in your eyes. Or the 2 points against Newcastle when he had high 60's % possession, shot after shot and our strikers couldn't get us the winning goal.

Points dropped are points dropped. Had we not fluffed those then the Chelsea game was irrelevant in my eyes.

And, no, I disagree that the stakes are higher. 3 points for each of 38 games. Do your job in enough of them - especially against the 'smaller' teams - and you win the title. To focus on mistakes in 1 or 2 games in solititude, ignoring the errors in all the others that left you a mountain to climb, is blinkered.

  131. Funnily enough, I would try Johnson there. My mates and I have said for years that he's defensively suspect, is only half a fullback, would be suited for a wing back or out-and-out right midfield role. Rafa, Kenny, Hodgson(cursed-be-his-name!), and Brendan have all resolutely ignored us. I'll accept they know something we don't, but would just like to see it before he gets on his hammock on an Italian beach.

Alternatively, Flanno. Don't know how close to fitness he is, definitely back in training, but would have had the power/strength to complete defensive duties and surge forward, though I accept his creativity isn't the best.

  132. Carra should just stick to retirement. Neither McCarthy nor Walcott is worth the effort and the money, whatever it is. The object is to skill up the team not down of stay even, at best...................

    ReplyDelete
  133. Logan,
Voice of reason you are! We lack some grit for sure and with Sturridge allegedly hurt again, forget it!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  134. Let's just hope they can get on the pitch pre-game without breaking every bone in their body

    ReplyDelete
  135. Well going by your own logic, yes, Gerrard's slip was more crucial than the Toure back pass, because it cost us 3 points, not 2 points. I don't care about the points we dropped against the likes of Newcastle and WBA. Every season, you are going to have a few of those games. It's basically inevitable, and you need to account for those things to happen when predicting the season ahead. All of the other errors you are trying to touch on didn't leave us with a mountain to climb. Those errors didn't blow any kind of possible advantage we had. We were in a top 4 race. Despite the Toure error, we were still in the top 4. Before the Chelsea game, we had a massive title advantage, and had effectively , since we were table toppers with only 3 games left. Gerrard completely blew whatever advantage we had. He stuffed up at a completely more crucial time. So stakes indeed are higher for different games. Some 3 pointers are effectively 6 pointers, while other 3 pointers are title winners. Some 3 pointers take a lot more nerve to win.

  139. WIthout being lauded much, these guys form our core from the midfield going up the pitch. I hope Im not sounding xenophobic but they are english (and have a good measure of skill which makes them the mainstay of our team), thus inevitably when we lose, fingers point to one or several of them (*I might have to include Coutinho as well but I feel he has been carrying his weight consistently as to pull himself out of this list). So, they need to improve on their consistency eg this past game vs manure, Raheem, Allen and Hendo were out of sorts and we all know what Gerrard did.

    ReplyDelete
  140. You say exactly as if you agree with what I have said, but then say exactly the opposite of what I have said. I do think BR is a very good tactician, sometimes a formation that has worked out the previous season doesn't work out the following season and rather than be stubborn about it, he kept trying to change his tactics until he got it right.

    ReplyDelete
  141. You don't deserve him.

    ReplyDelete
  142. If that is the case, I really do not understand how com you are a Liverpool fan..

    ReplyDelete
  143. Liverpool wouldn't of lost that game with 11 player on the pitch. It's a shame for Gerrard because he has distorted his legacy over the past year in the big games vs. Chelsea Uruguay and Man U. (cant think of any other player that has had an negative influence in a run of big games) I hope he gets that FA Cup to leave top flight football on a positive note.

    ReplyDelete
  144. exactly ,and the FA still wants to increase the number of "home grown players ".
