Exciting News: €35m striker admits he'd be 'honoured' to play for Liverpool. Sign?

In November, reports in Italy claimed that Liverpool were planning a massive €35m (£28m) move for Inter Milan star Mauro Icardi, and it appears that the coveted striker may be open to a move to Anfield.

When asked on Wednesday about rumours linking him with a move to the Premier League, Icardi told reporters:

"If the rumours about United, Chelsea and Liverpool were real, I would be honoured, because they are big clubs."

This is not the first time Liverpool have been linked with Icardi:

JULY 2013: The Daily Mail claimed: "Liverpool have enquired about Sampdoria striker Mauro Icardi. The Argentine has also been watched by Tottenham and Manchester City".

AUG 2013: sources in Italy claimed that that the Reds planned to make a €30m offer for the 21-year old striker.

When asked recently about Icardi's future, his agent told reporters:

"If Icardi plays in Spain or England, where he is likely to go, he will be a star. He will become one. He has the talent to be the new Ronaldo. You'll see"

Some info about Icardi:

* Spent 3 years at Barcelona before his €400k move to Sampdoria.
* 11 goals/2 assists in 33 apps for Samdoria.
* Last season: 9 goals 2 assists in 23 apps for Inter.
* This season: 12 goals/assists in 15 games.
* 1 appearance for the senior Argentina team.
* Current contract expires in 2018.
* Missed 10 games through injury last season.
* In a recent interview, Icrdi reveals he wants to 'be like Gabriel Batistuta'

Inter Boss Walter Mazzari is convinced that 'perfect' Icardi is destined for great things, but in a recent interview, he sounded a note of caution over the striker's development, and urged him to focus on his game:

"If he [Icardi] can keep this up and get some flaws out of his game, he can be a great player. He has all the characteristics, he just has to focus. Personal things need to be put aside. Footballers are professionals and they mustn't forget that."

This deal is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Rodgers' is clearly obsessed with bringing young players into Liverpool's squad, so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he splurged big bucks on yet another alleged 'star of the future'.

After spending £20m on Lazar Markovic, though, I doubt that LFC fans will bee too thrilled to see Rodgers spend €35m on a 21-year old Serie A striker.

There's also the London factor to consider - if it comes down to a straight choice between Chelsea and Liverpool, there's only going to be one winner. Diego Costa is proof of that.

  1. If it comes down to a straight choice between Chelsea and Liverpool, that means it will really come down to a straight choice between who is willing to offer more money.

Other than Alexis Sanchez, who is the last player to openly admit that London was a major determining factor.

Personally, I hope every young striker who chooses Chelsea over us looks at what's happened to Salah.

  2. Play at Liverpool or sit in the stands at Chelsea or City, career or money???.

  3. I kinda agree with the last part about LFC and Chelsea, but I'm not sure Costa would be the best example. When LFC were after him, we had Suarez. When Chelsea went after him, they literally had no one, unless you count Drogba as good competition. Money is a big factor, as is current status, but Chelsea could offer Costa so much more at the time. As for Icardi, money is really the only difference. LFC can give more playing time, and he'd probably be set as our "future" if we got him. Chelsea have Costa (who is only 26) Remy for backup, and an extensive youth loan and scouting system. Icardi goes there and there's no guarantee of playing time now or even in the future.

  4. He'd probably get some cracking pictures for Instagram in the stands with Wanda.

  5. any player from Serie A will join the Premier League because we have full stadiums of great football and they have a rubbish league of overated players who play in 1/3 full stadiums. Cuadrado is useless, Borini and Aqualani even more but Icardi however is the real deal. we should have targeted him instead of Lambert. Icardi has incredible pace crucial for premier league strikers and after building his name as a PL goalscorer he could go on to be like Kun Aguero scoring hattricks in CL and four goals in PL. anyways we should be targeting players like Icardi and Pogba.

  6. Decent player but we will have to pay top dollar both on fee and wages so for me I say look elsewhere. Hardly scintillating stats lets be honest.

  7. You mean a straight choice between Chelsea's bench and Liverpool's first team. I also think he's a bit more than "one for the future" and his stats would certainly suggest that.
His biggest problem arriving at Liverpool would be that much like Markovic, because of his price tag, a large section of the fans and media would expect instant results when the reality is he would need settling in time. This kind of pressure and expectation on a young player often gets them off to a bad start and it's difficult to come back from - Erik Lamela springs to mind.
Anyway it's all irrelevant because with that kind of gross over praise and hyperbole from his agent and manager, he'll be rubbish in no time... ;-)

  8. I can't help but wonder what planet you truly live on... Lambert was bought as a cheap backup option who is happy to play 10/15 minutes of matches here and there and to provide a plan B. How can you say we should have bought Icardi a £30M+ young striker instead of a £4M experienced, older striker...it's just ludicrous to even compare the 2. Perhaps if you had said Icardi instead of Balotelli it might have carried some weight but your comparison is so totally illogical.

Pogba really? Yeh cos we can afford to sign a player for £80M when every big club in the world wants him.

C'mon pal some realism please rather than all this fantasy nonsense.

  9. I stopped reading after "...any player from Serie A would join the premier league..."

  10. unfortunately young players just don't learn and agents are more attracted to the possibility of earning some money than making the rights choices for their players.

  11. although i agree one some part of it, taking Lambert as an example seems like a bad choice, i mean honestly experienced ? (how many years has he been playing in the PL and how often in the CL/EL has he played ?).

Sorry if i'm being disrespectful to him but i'm still annoyed that Liverpool bought a decent player as a back-up instead of a quality guy to fight it out for the first XI and add some real quality in the squad.

  12. don't forget chelsea's doctor, her alone is worth wasting your already short enough pro career.

  13. If I see Inter boss Walter Mazzari again, I'll commit suicide, seriously.

  14. Rodgers has stated on many occasions that the squad needs experienced players. The young criteria hes been set by FSG.

  15. Don't underestimate the "bridge" route

  16. Would have rested Coutinho.

  17. Perhaps we'll send him on a Jamaican vacation

  18. Good team, I'm glad he didn't succomb to the pressure of playing the Balo-Sturridge upfront.
Not that it would have been a bad idea, but let's use what is tried and tested.

  19. What do you think he could have possibly been thinking at that very moment this picture was taken...

My guess: "I hope if I play it cool, no one will smell that"

    ReplyDelete
  20. he's not hyped enough to deserve some rest apparently

    ReplyDelete
  21. He's thinking, "Rope or razor? Perhaps bridge?"

    ReplyDelete
  22. His competitive edge is waning as we type

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have been following his comments for some time now and can confirm that he is as sane as I am hahahahahahahaha!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. From a bridge perhaps with a razor just in case...?

    ReplyDelete
  25. That would be epic

  26. Dear oh deary me...

  27. Costa didn't choose London over Liverpool. Liverpool and Chelsea were attempting to get his services at different times. He went to Chelsea because they had the makings of a really top team. When Liverpool wanted him, they had just finished 7th.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Milic sounds a good target but Leverkusen has him signed thru 2018, and given their drop in the table, I would think they would want him for a long time after his loan spell ends..............Don't see us getting him.

  29. Would rather try for Lacazette at the same price. He doesn't stop scoring, and has carried Lyon this year. Although I'd wait an extra year and see our current situation.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Way too much hype around this fella. Plus, the price is quite prohibitive IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That line of reasoning is more likely to work on Icardi than most.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Rather us follow through on the Lewandowski rumor, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Would like to see us going after the likes of Icardi and Lacazette not the Lamberts and Ings of this world. Ings is only better because he is young and will have opportunities to improve

    ReplyDelete
  34. Now thats something

    ReplyDelete
  35. Its interesting though because I don't think he was the striker Pep wanted...

Reus on the other hand would thrive at Bayern and they got rid of Manzukic who in all honesty was doing a great job..

Question 2? Would he come to Liverpool... especially if Real, Chelsea, PSG sniff around... Probably not...

We have to go for under the radar players. Firmino, even Lacazette doesn't have that much fan fair around him.. compared to Lewa, Sanchez, Pedro, Benzema, Cavani, etc...

    ReplyDelete
  36. He's thinking "That Mourinho's a smug c*nt..."
