Transfer Today? LFC plan late offer for €15m striker who's 'like Ibrahimovic'. Cut-price deal possible

With less than 12 hours remaining of the winter transfer window, it seems unlikely that Liverpool will sign any new players, but the speculation just keep on coming, and the latest player to be linked with a last-minute move to Anfield is French star André-Pierre Gignac.

In November, the Daily Express claimed that Liverpool were planning a January move for Gignac, and according to Italian newspaper Tutto Sport today:

* Arsenal and Liverpool are planning a late transfer offer for Gignac.

* Gignac is a free agent in the summer, so the Reds will try and get him for a knock-down price.

In September, Gignac's agent, Christopher Hutteau, insisted that the striker is capable of succeeding at a 'big club', and specifically name-checked Liverpool as a possible destination. He told French newspaper L'Equipe:

"This is a striker with a relatively atypical profile, responsive to the physical challenge. He can play for Arsenal or Liverpool, no problem. For me, it is between €12million (£9.5m) and €15million (£11m)."

Some info about Gignac:

* 4 goals in 17 games for the France national team.
* Marseille: 70 goals/13 assists in 173 apps.
* Toulouse: 42 goals/11 assists in 118 apps.
* Lorient: 11 goals/6 assists in 51 apps.
* TOTALS: 123 goals/30 assists in 342 apps.
* Goal every 2.8 games.
* Goal/assist every 2.2 games.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton played alongside Gignac at Marseille, and when asked about the striker, he raved:

"He's one of our most important players. He's like Ibrahimovic at Paris Saint-Germain. He can score from anywhere".

With 16 goals/1 assist in 24 games this season, Gignac has continued where he left off last season, when he grabbed an impressive 27 goals/assists in 39 appearances.

That said, there's a world of difference between scoring goals in Ligue One, and regularly hitting the back of the net in the Premier League, and at the age of 29, it's highly doubtful Gignac is a long-term solution.

As with Winston Reid, Gignac is a free agent in the summer, so Liverpool are in a strong bargaining position, and could conceivably get him at a very attractive price. It seems like a stop-gap measure to me, though, and if the Reds are to drop a nominal fee on a striker, then Danny Ings is arguably better value.

Of course, Gignac is available from January onwards, whereas Liverpool will have to wait until the summer for Ings, so that may be a deciding factor. Or, it's conceivable the Rodgers may sign both players, but with Origi arriving at the club this summer, that will make little sense.

  1. Too many decent players available for free this summer. I expect few shrewd signings by Liverpool in the summer but nothing in January.

  2. Jamie - Ihate to say I told you so but I did - there will be NO SIGNINGS = Been obvious since November

  3. I think if BR has 12 million he might gobble up Berahino.... but I doubt FSG would give any more money....unless if they see some great value in some youngster...

  4. JK never said there will be any signings...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Too true... But what does that mean? Does FSG still have any faith in Brendon rodgers and its a wait and see how he does till the summer? If no champions league then you out brendon and the money goes to new manager? Or does it mean that FSG dont wanna bank roll any transfers?

  6. There's also reports LFC going for Lavezzi for £14m. I doubt it will happen unless Lambert and Balo are off loaded.

  7. It means that we have 15- 20 players ready to step up when needed if Migs can go without brain farts and if Daniel is available. Both happening right now, and with a striker already coming in the summer, no need for new signings.

  8. Forget him, he's just a big lump. I was at the Velodrome when Toulouse came to town and have watched Marseille on tv a lot. He runs around a lot and can hold the ball up but is not particularly skilful. He wouldn't fit our system, we need a striker who is fast and can run at defenders.

  9. Ok maybe but there are too many "ifs" in your comment. we could strengthen now and get a champions league spot or not and let Man U, or Southampton have that advantage...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Its obvious any lump who has a decent goal scoring record and knows where the back of the net is will be linked to Liverpool forever ,whether he joins the club or not is an entirely different thing altogether .......cheers

  11. I agree. Our owners have obviously accepted the fact that there will be no Champions League football at Anfield next season. Or at least they're taking one hell of a risk that there won't be.

  12. I don't think it's too much to hope for a player to stay fit for a half of season especially since we didn't have any luck with that so far.
And for a very good keeper(remember him in Sunderland?) not to have brain farts for the same ammount of time, especcialy since we...

  13. err how old is he again ?????

  14. Saido Berahino for £12m isn't a realistic valuation. You forget the extortionate tax add on attached to British players price tags.If Berahino was sold he would most likely go for double the price you stated.

  15. Don't worry we can buy him in 3-4 yrs for 30m

    Was thinking the same thing.
But spurs won't sell him in the BPL.
In 5 years he will go abroad for ten times the amount they paid for him. We are looking for the wrong players,
    Over and over again...

  17. I'm a glass half full kind of guy and with Studge back and the way the team is now playing we are capable of achieving a CL spot . We will be in the mix ...... then we will attract quality signings .
Some silverware would also be a nice send off for Stevie !

We should have bought Dele Alli.
Kid got everything and supports LFC.
    He is the real deal.
Now he is going to Spurs.

OT: Gignac is definitely not the type of striker we need.

  19. Looks like Moyes is set to take Ings to Spain. + 1 for us.

    Blessing in disguise.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It probably means that because we went out the Champions league at the group stages, we can't spend any money in January without breaching FFP

    ReplyDelete
  21. I read he'd signed a pre-contract has that been confirmed?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Funny how Johnson has not signed that new contract yet? Reports were saying he was bang on the money to have already signed. Maybe FSG have woken up.

    ReplyDelete
  23. With Real Sociedad? Let's hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Shrewd signing when we have been reported to be after Ings?

Exiting times ahead my friend :-o

    ReplyDelete
  25. I said exactly the same thing yet some were arguing the opposite with me :-) Gotta love it!

    ReplyDelete
  26. You see that is where the £120m spent this season question comes in to play. You cannot tell me that FSG are happy?

    Really?

    ReplyDelete
  27. God I hope so we really don't need him- got to offload some dead wood starting with him

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nicolas Chamberlain5:51 pm, February 02, 2015

    Amen to that,

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yea and another said we had a 10m deal for Gameiro in case the Ings one fails- another says Ings turned down Moyes for us- the next one will be Suarez wants to come back- at this stage they'll claim anything it seems

    ReplyDelete
  30. Now just imagine if Suarez had to return, baggage yes but goals galore in the red shirt. He made a mistake moving to Barca. Oh well, we just have to be happy to be linked with the likes of Ings now.

    Happy days!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Over the moon! My smile is as big as the Grand Canyon! So who do you think wants to sign Balotelli? And then we can just piss more money by signing players liker Ings.

Happy days my friend. Happy days :-o

  32. I rated your opinion. Now sheik bloody shamsy sounds fun... Lose the bitterness mate...

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've got all limbs and fingers crossed I look ridiculous trying to walk up the street- BR says he will look to the academy rather than transfer market. Also Lambert and Balo going nowhere

    ReplyDelete
  34. So who do you think will want to join us now?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I know. It's been obvious all window we weren't going to make any moves but to be honest, I don't really see that we need to now, although remind me of that statement when Sturridge gets injured in training tomorrow

    ReplyDelete
  36. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. So Chelsea sign Schurrle for a reported £18m and has a very average time at Chelsea yet sell him for a reported £24m. Now that is how you do business.

    How poor are we?

    ReplyDelete
  38. We are going to win the league next season right? Huff, puff, huff, puff. FSG will not accept.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Happy days, oh happy days! And we were after Ings...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Perfect answer. ;-) You will not see that much money in a lifetime yet Rodgers had the privilege of spending that much. He needs to be exempt!

    ReplyDelete
  41. To an oil rich business :-)

    ReplyDelete
  43. How Koeman can get amazing players like Alderweireld and Tadic so easily is beyond me. If we are being realistic, we do not even have the attracting power of Southampton.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Add to that the have gotten Cuadrado for free basically while getting rid of Salah. And Southampton have signed a great talent in Djuricic and probably another one in Vilhenna for 5 mil in total.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Be fair. We made a profit on the Assaidi deal :-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    ReplyDelete
  47. Plus we paid them £50m for 3 of their players and they are better off than last season and we are worse off?

    I rest my case.

    ReplyDelete
  48. We are going to regret not spending this window when one of Lucas, Sturridge or Sakho inevitably gets injured. Then, it will be Johnson and Lovren for the rest of the season. There is no way these players can handle all the games we have coming up so we will have to play the bench players and sadly, we do not have any.

    ReplyDelete
  49. And with the way Sakho and Lucas have been alienated, all of a sudden they are our most important players, they will decide they have futures elsewhere.

The way this season has been handled is a joke. But Rodgers needs to be excused for a pathetic first half of the season. He can do no wrong and those who jump on the bandwagon no nothing.

FSG will be having their say at the end of the season. That is for sure.

  51. sO YOU ARE TELLING ME THAT YOU WOULD BE ALL RIGHT with signin Tadic this summer? hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  52. No way ... what do you think he went to
America for ? Underwent bionic surgery - replacement metal parts throughout !

    ReplyDelete
  53. What have you got against Danny Ings anyway? He's class.

    ReplyDelete
  54. To be fair we almost got £14M for Borini.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Villa after Rickie Lambert apparently can we throw Johnson in as a sweetener

    ReplyDelete
  56. You make it sound like they transferred 120 mil into Rodgers account and he flew around Europe having a great time signing any old Tom, Dick or Mario, giggling profusely as he did so.
This is why I'm bored of talking to you about this because it's been explained a million times that clearly Rodgers is just a cog in a greater transfer machine. How much say he has is unclear so I don't know why you keep saying he blew all the money as if it was just him on his own. This brings me to my next point. Most of our signings are starting to come good, after what is a reasonable settling in period for new young players. We're winning games, keeping clean sheets, playing good football and climbing up the league so what exactly is your problem right now? Also the fact you keep saying he's wasted 120 million must mean that you don't rate a single one of the summer signings? None of them? Otherwise it would be 80 million wasted or 60 million but no, you think the whole 120 has been wasted? It suggests you've made up your mind that Rodgers doesn't know what he's doing and all the new players are crap, regardless of how much mounting evidence there is to the contrary so I don't see the point in just going round in circles with you

    ReplyDelete
  57. Chelsea have made big profits on other players deemed not good enough in Lakaku and David Luiz.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I have nothing against him as a human being but a football player he is good enough for Burnley but not a club as big as LFC. We have been burnt to many times unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes and he is being excused. Just like Remy was rejected so could Balotelli have been but it was not Rodgers decision to sign Balotelli according to some?

Rodgers is exempt. None of the signings was down to him, all of the blame should be shifted on to others as well as our disastrous starts to the first half of the season. It is not Rodgers fault, none of it. Blame the rest of the transfer committee which he is part of and Ian Ayre and FSG who made the most money available in one season ever to any manager at LFC and he can still have the red carpet treatment.

Going around in circles? At least I do not have my head stuck in the sand.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I never said anything about signing Tadic but it seems you would be ok with us signing Danny Ings?

Now that is ambition for you!

    ReplyDelete
  61. This was my point. Blame them for what? What is so bad about what's happening at Liverpool at the moment? Anyway as I said, going round in circles

    ReplyDelete
  62. What is so bad happening at LFC when we might not even finish top 4 been kicked out of the group stages of the CL and not likely to get a trophy this season either.

That my friend is what FSG are thinking about. It helps nobody if the manager only woke up half way through the season and finally through his own stubbornness to try and save his job change back to the way we played last season. Struggling to finish fourth is not going to save him his job if he spent almost £120m this season. It is a disgrace.

I wonder what the targets were for Rodgers this season? There were targets no doubt and if one believes it was just to try finish top 4 after being the 2nd biggest spenders in the league at the start of the season then you are delusional.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Liverpool are a project. A work in progress and hopefully FSG are the reasonable, measured people they seem to be, who will understand that professional sport is not an exact science and that mistakes will be made along the way. Rodgers will not be exempt from any form of blame but he will not be held solely responsible and the shake up of our scouting network is testament to that.
Unless our season takes a disastrous turn for the worse again then I can't see Rodgers being replaced even if we don't qualify for the champions league I think he'll get at least one more season. I know people will point to Kenny and say he was afforded no such privilege but Kenny wasn't the type of manager FSG wanted to take the club forward. Rodgers is and I seriously doubt FSG are thinking about replacing him and starting again with someone new unless as I said earlier, things take a very bad turn for the worse and there is nothing to suggest we're going anywhere but up just now

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh the 'work in progress' excuse. That is what we are every season ain't it? This is Rodgers third season and he has already spent well over £200m.

So what will the excuses be next season to sugar coat Rodgers if he does stay? If you believe FSG are happy with this season then so be it. There would have been targets in place for Rodgers and what is the bet that it was to challenge for the title again? If we were a work in progress then FSG would not have made that much money available this season. Spend almost £120m to be called a work in progress and struggle to get into the top 4? Can you actually see the logic behind that thinking?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Circles Logan, circles

    ReplyDelete
  66. Circles? That is the logic though. Spend £120m to struggle finishing top 4 and then call it a work in progress. My word, Kenny was being ripped to shreds in his last season but some cannot are finding it difficult to fault with the fact that we had our worst start to a season in half a century?

    Work in progress my behind.

Granted our tactics at the start of the season were nothing short of baffling at times but (better late than never) the system's been changed and we're now getting good results and performances. So we had a poor first half of the season... Get over it, we're moving in the right direction again

    ReplyDelete
  69. I don't share your love of repetition Logan so I'm going to let other people continue to have this same argument with you every day for the rest of your life. Enjoy

    ReplyDelete
  70. The system should have never been changed in the first place! Why is that so difficult to admit or do you want to carry on making excuses?

Rodgers had £120m made available to him this season yet we ended up with Lambert and Balotelli which I guess is also not his fault?

    Nothing is!
