It's Not Over: 'Fantastic' £10m-striker to reject Real and sign for Liverpool next summer

Despite rampant speculation, Liverpool failed to sign Burnley star Danny Ings on transfer deadline day, but it seems like the 'dangerous' striker has his heart set on a move to Anfield, and will wait until the summer to seal the deal.

On Saturday, the BBC claimed:

* Liverpool would 'attempt to sign' Ings before the transfer window closed on Monday.

* Rodgers' planned to loan the £10m-rated front-man back to Burnley for the rest of the season.

That deal didn't come off, but according to The Mirror today:

* Ings wants to join Liverpool in the summer.
* He'll reject a move to Real Sociedad as he 'favours' a move to Anfield.
* Manchester City are also tracking Ings and may also make offer at the end of the season.

Ings allegedly rejected the chance to sign a pre-contract agreement (PCA) with Real Sociedad, but if that's the case - and Liverpool are really interested - why didn't the Reds offer Ings a PCA to tie him down right now? If he really has has heart set on a move to Anfield, then he would've signed the agreement, surely?

Even though the transfer window is shut, the Reds can still pursue a PCA under Premier League Rule U8, which that:

* Players are free to sign PCAs with clubs are subject to the approval of the Premier League board.
* The approval guarantees the player a transfer to his chosen club in the summer.

As I've argued in several articles, Ings is not the type of striker to take Liverpool to the next level, but on a free transfer, it's hard to argue with the deal. Indeed, in terms of scoring/creating goals - which is a striker's primary role - Ings is a clear upgrade on Borini and Lambert:

* Bournemouth: 8 goals/3 assists in 29 apps.
* Goal every 3.6 games | Goal/assist every 2.6 games.

* Burnley: 39 goals/13 assists in 114 apps.
* Goal every 2.9 games | Goal/assist every 2.1 games.

* This season: 7 goals/3 assists in 21 apps.
* Goal every 3 games | Goal/assist every 2.1 games.

* TOTALS: 47 goals/16 assists in 143 apps
* Goal every 3 games | Goal/assist every 2.3 games.

Stats: OPTA

Ings also has huge self-confidence, which may help him overcome the dreaded small club mentality that seems to hamper so many LFC signings. In an interview last season with the Lancashire Telegraph, he noted:

“It’s really good [to play alongside Zaha, Sterling and Morrison] but to be honest, I look at them and think: ‘I want to do better than you and push myself further than you and become a better player’. And that’s what I’ll strive for every day.”

Is Ings capable of becoming a 'better player' than Sterling? He is certainly developing at a similar rate, and at the age of 22, Ings has his best years ahead of him, which could be great news for Liverpool.

  2. every striker should be like suarez in the squad??
    ings as a 3rd or 4th choice on a free transfer is never a bad option in my opinion..he is surely an upgrade on what we have right now leaving sturridge out.

  3. lol ... that headline reject "Real" .....
    Dele Alli episode isn't far behind us... oh he went to Spurs

  4. The counter to "why don't LFC sign him to a PCA"... perhaps Ings is trying to increase his value to get a larger contract (from LFC or elsewhere).

    It's a risk on his part, and it may not even be the case. But it could a relatively simple explanation.

  5. British clubs can't offer pre contract deals to players in either the same country or the same league.

  6. I had a look and may be wrong.

  7. No dicrespect to ings, but dont you think we should be setting our sights a little higher, someone like benzima, martinez, etc, but we still need to get some dead wood moved first

    Pre contracts can only be signed between foreign clubs. But you knew that but it is talking point.

    ReplyDelete
  9. With respect, that's not correct. As the article states, Premier League rules allow for pre-contract agreements between UK clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good point. They will surely want him to play so what would the FA think?

  11. Jamie what happened to all those done deals, players we were going to buy ? at least 200 million pounds worth. - in we got reality none.

    ReplyDelete
  12. the Independant said Utd did something similar with Smalling- in this case Ings could play against us shortly so don't know if that counts as conflict of interests

    ReplyDelete
  13. Please read the article properly. There is a Premier League rule that allows pre-contract agreements between British clubs, as long as there is no 'conflict of interest'.

    Sorry mate. Balotelli is a big name but like Martinez and Higuain they will not fit the system. Messi, Benzema, Augero,Cavani,Suarez , will but they are unrealistic.

    I can think of only Lacazette as a realistic option but i think Rodgers sees Origi as the next big thing, Ings will probably get origi over till he is ready.

  15. Rumors man we have to talk about something

    ReplyDelete
  16. Given the proposed deal, Ings seems like a no-brainer that shouldn't prevent us from going after other players.

    A free transfer, plus his wages cannot be that prohibitive...

    If a deal with him would hinder us from higher goals, then we have much larger problems on our hands.

  17. Damp squib. Auto correct is a biatch isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lacazette should be target #1. With Ings on free and Origi already bought, that's a pretty solid strike force if you ask me.

    I agree with everything else you said too... although I'm sure there are other realistic options that would be good, just none that spring to mind right this second. Lacazette is still undoubtedly our best bet though.

    On a side note, with Real acquiring Lucas Silva, I think we should definitely be looking at one of their CMs. I mean, between Khedira, Illarra, Casemiro, etc, one of them is leaving. Only Kroos and Modric are surefire stays

  19. After yesterday's damp squid, I'd like to suggest a new name. Transfer Breadline Day.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I can see the club replacing Balotelli Lambert and Borini in the summer and a free option to the 3 will loosen up funds to buy top quality.
    Anyhow i see him as a better option to the 3 that may well be replaced add to that Origi coming also.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Agree with you that he would be a free transfer and his wages wouldent be a isue, but the point i was getting at was we need to sell and thats going to be a problem with borini and now lambert and balo in no rush to move and are happy just to sit on the bench and get there wage

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wouldn't be free due to his age. You'd have to pay compensation for him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. A minimum of 3m apparently

    ReplyDelete
  24. For minimum compensation it really does seem like a good deal. No, there is no obvious need for him, but having two talented young strikers come into the squad next season will be good for the club overall. Perhaps there are other strikers on the radar or maybe the harsh reality is that the big players just don't want to come here. We tried for them in the summer and got knocked back time and time again. When decent young talent becomes available and shows an interest in playing for the club then I think they should be snapped up. Let's keep an eye on Ings for the rest of the season, see if he goals scoring record improves or stagnates.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think that's a good problem to have from the perspective that they are sitting because we have someone better as opposed to them playing because we have no one better.

    ReplyDelete
  26. it's true that we should set our sight higher, but did higher player set their sight to us ? that's the question should be answered......

    ReplyDelete
  27. even suarez him self didn't like suarez now a days pal.........

    ReplyDelete
  28. for free? why not...... did you forgot that we bought lambert for 4m? if you willing to pay for lambert, then certainly you would please to get ing for free......

    ReplyDelete
  29. Buy Ings on Free
    Sell Balotelli,Borini,Lambert for 27 M
    Buy Lacazette for 17M
    Origi coming in the Summer
    So Sturridge,Lacazette,Ings,Origi will be our strikers..

    ReplyDelete
  30. And top it up with Imbula from OM to replace SG.
    What a player he is going to be.... Gianelli Imbula!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Any one of those three midfielders would be most welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lacazette 17m haha made me chuckle. IMO you can add another 10m to that at the very least

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ings wouldn't be free. Due to agree would have to pay compensation for him even though out of contract. Likely 4-5m

    ReplyDelete
  34. One thing is for sure there will be loads of players leaving LFC in the summer the list is endless Aspas,Coates,Alberto etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  35. Your valuations be crazy yo.

    Just stop it Brendan you are not going to get the England job, no matter how many English players you get for LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  37. He's not British is he? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Seems it would clearly be that to my simple mind

    ReplyDelete
  39. Just like Lambert was lauded and supported by youtube videos. Ings is just another sentimental (English) purchase

    ReplyDelete
  40. His mothers brothers wife's grandads dog trainers cousin holds a dual British/French passport so he qualifies to play for the Isle of Mann that way, so not exactly technically British, just British prices

    ReplyDelete
  41. Like it. He is more British than most of our rugby and cricket players then

    Though to (mis)quote our glorious leader " I prefer to educate dogs not train them ....."

    ReplyDelete
  42. We had our chance to sign Lacazette at the start of the season when we had almost £120m available. He is not going to come to LFC now when he will be able to cherry pick any team he wants seeing that he is one of the most prolific strikers in Europe this season.

    We are also going to struggle to get anywhere near what we paid for Balotelli too and now we have players like Ings to look forward to! What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Borini has made it clear he wants to stay and fight for his place and quite honestly Ings in no shape or for will be an upgrade from Borini. Maybe Borini knows something we don't :-). If we sign Ings some of our fans will classify LFC as another work in progress next season. He may be good enough for Burnley but not for LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  44. B Rodgers needs to ship out : F Borini(23) and R Lambert(32) in the summer and if M Balotelli(24) does not excel with Sterling(20) and Sturridge(25) besides him in attack then he will need to be shown the door also.

    B Rodgers should bring in these two strikers in the summer:

    1: FD: D Ings(22) Of Burnley for £3-£5M to replace Headless Chicken Borini(23) he will offer more class, creativity, mobility, pace and speed than Borini(23)

    2: FD: C Benteke Of Aston Villa for £15-£22M to replace R Lambert(32)

    And if M Balotelli(24) is shipped out in summer then S Berahinho(21) of West Brom should be brought to the club also for £12-£17M

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ings is great cheap upgrade on borini and Lambert.

    Step two get rid of borini and balo.

    Step three sign a potential world class striker like lacazette, aubamenyang, etc.. Someone with pace who could lead us when Sturridge breaks down again.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Completely agree.

    I rate Illamandri has the potential to go the same projectile as alonso. Think the pressure of Madrid got to him.

    ReplyDelete
  47. still it's acceptable due to my reason above......
