'I want to lead LFC': Defender reveals 'dream' to captain Liverpool like Gerrard and Carra

With Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard leaving the club at the end of the season, the captaincy is up for grabs, and Jordan Henderson is seemingly certain to take over from the outgoing skipper. According to Brendan Rodgers' assistant, Colin Pascoe, Emre Can is also an option for the future, but that isn't deterring academy player Tom Brewitt, who this week revealed that his ultimate ambition is captain the first team.

Speaking to the official Liverpool FC website this week, the 18-year old defender named Jamie Carragher as his 'inspiration', and revealed that he tries to 'shout like him, act like him and lead like him' on the pitch. Brewitt further added:

"My dream would be to captain the first team like Gerrard and Carragher have done. I want to lead Liverpool at Anfield - it would be the ultimate dream."

An admirable ambition to have, but Brewitt - LFC's under-18 captain - will probably be waiting a long time to achieve that dream. Henderson is almost certainly set to be Liverpool's next captain, and at the age of 24, he could conceivably lead the Reds for the next eight years.

Then, there's Emre Can, who is also allegedly captain material. Speaking to the press on Thursday, Colin Pascoe told reporters:

"In years to come I am sure he [Can] will progress to be one of them [LFC captain]. He is a leader on the pitch and the way he is playing he has been fantastic".

Can has only just turned 21, so if he stays at Anfield, he will be the right age to take over from Henderson if//when the midfielder moves on, or gives up the armband.

It's good to have dreams, though, according to Brewitt, 'if you work hard enough you can achieve whatever you want'. That is often true, but in this case, the reality is that his chances of captaining Liverpool are extremely slim.

On the issue of captaincy, I recently conducted a poll asking fans who should take over from Gerrard:

* 12600 (approx) site visitors participated in the poll.
* 55% of participants voted for Skrtel. Only 28% chose Henderson.
* 10% chose Lucas; 7% Lallana; 1% Lovren.

This suggests that there's a slight disconnect between the fans and Rodgers on this particular issue. Hendo is the obvious choice, but for me, Skrtel deserves it more. The Slovakian is in imperious form right now, and he is the glue that holds the defence together.

  1. I do see Hendo as a future captain, but I think maybe it's a little too soon for him to take it on full time just yet. Skrtel is the obvious choice for a season or two. Then pass it on to Hendo, possibly with Can as Vice, depending on his progression.

Henderson, Skrtel, Can, Lallana and Sakho could all be our next captain.
But if the boss sticks with Henderson I will be happy as well.
He matured so much and his energy and passion are good for the team.

  3. According to your stats in this post, you have 101% which is impossible, 55 + 28+ 10 + 7 + 1 . For the captaincy. Please make sure your poll stats are correct

  6. All right. I am telling you that 7,23 is 7%, 27,56 is 28 % etc, and that is why it doesen't add up perfectly

  8. Emre for captain? I'm sure he could fit that in as well as fixing global poverty and servicing the most beautiful women on the planet.let Hendo or Skirtel have it for a while I'm sure Emre won't mind

  9. I think Tom's chances of making the first team are slimmer than his chances of being the captain if/when he makes it.

  10. I hear he saved eight children from a burning building during halftime on Tuesday.

  11. well, with encouragement like that...

  12. I hope he makes it, but with Rogers playing with 3 CB and us having 6 on the books not to mention other youngsters his chances are really slim. With his great attitude about working hard, I am sure he will be a captain once he makes the team.

  13. It wont be Strootman he is 50million so it has to be Pjanic so rather get Milner for free .

  14. As long as he doesn't want to shoot like Carra

    ReplyDelete
  15. Does that apply to spelling?

  16. Lacazette may well go for more than 35m, wouldn't be surprised if he went for somewhere around 50m considering his excellent goal scoring and assist progression over the last 2 seasons and the comments from Aulas

  17. this is the type of signing we need... 25mill not value for money? I think it is if you compare to Lallana (who I really like by the way). Cazette has better stats and Lallana has not wracked up as many assists as he should perhaps.

For 25 Mill that is good going even if modern day football transfer fees are grossly overpriced and spit in the face of poor people all around the world...

  18. 25m for Lacazette seems to be a fair price. If we can get him for that we should 100% sign him, although i'm skeptical about our chances as i believe a number of other big European clubs will come in for him.

  19. Niguez would love to cant see him moving would be a great signing though.

  20. Too soon maybe, maturity is required for an LFC captain. Also without being rude, in your average tool box, I wonder if Jordan would be one of the sharpest?

  21. I feel like we have a lot of vice captains but no obvious captain

  22. Jaimie has often used the term sheeple. I often disagree but it seems 55% of polers are proving me wrong.

  23. Never is a long time but in two seasons time I don't see why both would not potentially be key front men for LFC

  24. Sheeple or baaaahstards: ) I had to

  25. I like yours though ;-)

  26. I have to say I wasn't convinced by Can at first. He didn't track back when he lost the ball. Obviously that happens a lot less now at the back but even when he's in midfield he pops up all over the place. He looks like a player now.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The obvious captain is Brad Jones.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree he has got it badly wrong. Everyone knows football stats have to equal 110%

  29. You can say that again Orme ;-)

  30. Glen Johnson...

    ReplyDelete
  31. He is definitely a player all right

  32. I was going to put that but evenI had more sense

    ReplyDelete
  33. 35 million for Andy Carroll :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I must admit that it is becoming an increasingly common occurrence to have to hide my semi-erection whenever Emre Can is on the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Given your name I can see how that might be a problem

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lacazette is thought of in high regard but I believe that he's considered just that one step below the likes of Benzema, Higuain, Cavani and Falcao (before Utd). I think those "higher bracket" players will go for the 45-50 million mark. Lacazette, Martinez, Dybala are 25-35 million. Just remember that Costa and Sanchez moved for 35 million and they were more proven

  37. Never hide your appreciation for perfection

  38. I just deleted the comment you left on the Rodgers article. Post something pointless like that again and you will be banned.

  39. 35m last summer becomes 40m next summer, just plain inflation. Lyon aren't a club that need to sell, especially their in-form, main goalscorer who is "one of their own". We were never in the running (or any other interested clubs it would seem) to offer Costa or Sanchez the consistent higher level, location, wages that would have pushed their transfers fees higher with more serious bidders. Aulas has also already been prepping the ground to indicate they won't be accepting bids they don't consider "fantastic".

You may well be right, but your opinion that he is in a lower bracket than players he is younger than and outperforming is, IMO, irrelevant when it comes to teams deciding if he is going to fit into their squad and playing style. Would you prefer Higuin over Lacazette? I know who I'd be happier to spend the higher bracket money on.

  40. There's an echo

  41. Good comparison, but I feel he has one thing Borini doesn't, composure.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's what I meant really

    ReplyDelete
  43. 25m steep? I consider that very low. He's 24, a perfect age for signing, with more goals than games. I don't see a top club not wanting to sign him, whether it be Man.U, PSG, even Bayern. I think he'll definitely go for 35m+, maybe even near the region of 40 million, this kid has got it all, and if he continues his form onto next summer, he'll be top 10 in the world, no doubt

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sorry, but why Balo? He's just come back vs Spurs, and I'm not going to be that guy who say''s that he scored, but he looked so much more mature on the pitch. When he was getting pushed around by Spurs players, he didn't seem to react. Kept his cool, and screw those who say not smiling was disrespectful. IMO those people are the ones who never supported him through the season, he deserves another chance.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Dashing, ain't it ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah, I can't see him moving either. Looks like an amazing young player. Atletico sure know how to churn out the midfielders.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I can Blindly Bid around 20-25M....He is Outstanding

    ReplyDelete
  48. Definitely. But if we signed a player like Pjanic, what would that mean for Can?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Play together in MF

    ReplyDelete
  50. That would mean we're sacrificing captain Henderson though, right?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I thought Balo came on and did well During the Spurs game. Couldn't care less about his non-celebration. It's a part of the Balo package deal. The reason I'd choose to move him on is because I don't think his strengths as a striker fit in with ours as a team. It's a compatibility issue. We need someone who can press with high intensity for close to 90 minutes, and who will regular make unselfish runs off the shoulder of The last defender to open up space on the pitch. It's not what Balo does, and because of that its best we go our separate ways.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Pjanic would be Gerrard's replacement. Can, Gerrard and Henderson regularly play in the same team. Anyway it's all about having a squad and competition for places. I'd be happy with Lacazette and Pjanic too

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thats not how it works look at how many 1 season wonders come from crap teams.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Also mate they got investigated for FFP this season we really dont have the money

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yeah, but with Can in defence.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well there is where the club needs to start being hard and tougher with as that £15M could have brought in descent GK to put Comical Mignolet(26) on the bench permanently.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Greg, There are so many damn loop holes in everything that is why Barcelona, Chelsea,Man City, PSG and Real Madrid get away with things.

The amount of loop holes people with money find in this world is comical

Berahino(21) is a top class finisher, he reminds me a bit of I Wright a proper goalscorer. If he is regular given good chances near goal, he scores.

And he is only going to get better.

H Kane(22) has the likes of Chadli(25), Dembele(27), Eriksen(22), Lamela(22) and Townsend(23) carving and creating opportunities for him.

S Berahino(21) has the likes of Brunt(30), Mcmanaman(23), Morrison(28) and Sessegnon(30) carving and creating opportunities for him.

So it is no wonder H Kane(22) stands out, If Berahino(21) is a better finisher than H Kane(22) and if he had Coutinho(22), Ibe(19), Lallana(26) and Sterling(20) behind him he would have 25-30 goals a season. He has got 16 goals in all competitions playing for West Brom
