'We're hoping that...': - BR confirms that 'wonderful' £29m star is in the 'final stages' of Liverpool return

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has provided the latest in a long-line of seemingly promising fitness updates on Daniel Sturridge, but is it really time for Reds fans to start feeling excited about the star-striker's return?

When asked about Sturridge on Friday, Rodgers raved:

"He is a top class player with a wonderful idea of the game and wonderful qualities. His pace is frightening and his movement. If he can stay fit he can lead the charge for us".

When asked about Sturridge today, Rodgers told reporters:

"He [Sturridge] is working very hard on his rehab and we're hoping that somewhere near the end of this month he should be back. He is back here in the final stages of that and doing very well."

£29m-rated Sturridge perpetually seems to be on the verge of returning, or in the 'final stages' of his injury rehab, but will he actually make it back before the end of January?

I honestly don't think so. It's the 19th of January already, which leaves only 11 days before the month ends, and it won't surprise me at all if Sturridge fails to make it in the stipulated time-frame.

That's fine, though. Liverpool should not rush him back, and if it takes until, say, March for Sturridge to be 100% fully-fit and recovered, then so be it. Liverpool need him back, but with results improving over the last month, there's no real need to force the issue.

Given Sturridge's atrocious injury history (nine separate incidents since January 2013), there's obviously a real worry that he'll pick up another injury soon after his return, and I'm sure that most Liverpool fans will have their hearts in their mouths with every tackle, collision etc in which Sturridge is involved.

What happens if Sturridge picks up another injury soon after his return? Will that put a serious dent in his long-term Liverpool future?

  2. The improved results have been achived against teams in poor form e.g. Sunderland and Villa, against a 10 man of Sunderland and a toothless Villa attack, respectively. The reality check will come sooner rather than later hence Sturridge is badly neede. However, if Sturridge starts playning soon, Hodgson will call him for international duty and instead of getting rest he will get more chances to get injured. What I do not understand is that people were very outspoken and straightforward about Suarez mental weakness and Balotelli mental and technical weaknessess, but no one dares to say the truth about Strrridge, i.e. that his health condition allows him to play either for the club or for the country but not to do both.

  3. Can't wait to see him line up with the attacking players/options we have, sure he will grab a good return of goals if fit for rest of season. Agree we must proceed with caution if he is not 100% match fit, wait until Feb if needs be before involving him.

Unfortunately if his injuries do continue it will raise doubts over his long term career in general, lets hope the worst are behind him and he is not going to be one of those players forced to hang up boots early. At least we have him in what should be his prime years as a player.

  4. Need to sign a different striker now im afraid, as much as i love Sturridge he just isn't going to be the same with all the pressure on him i don't think. Everyone has put our season being rescued on his shoulders. Hope this isn't the case and he continues scoring for fun though...

  5. This is not acceptable at all. Trying to blind everyone that Studge is coming back and therefore no reinforcement in necessary in the striker department. Rodgers as usual giving subliminal messages in his interviews.

  6. I agree Jaimie,

I don't think he will return when they say he will and I don't think that he will capture the immediate form that we need.
It's way too much pressure on Daniel to perform.
We have no viable alternatives thats my problem IF Daniel gets injured again I hope the decision not to go into the transfer market doesn't come back to bite Brendan and the transfer committee.

  7. Feb is when we really need him so no rush. Hopefully with the extra treatment he has had in the states and with our doctor getting sacked we may see less injury problems with Dani. Let's hope so.

  9. If there's no rush to bring him back why not just wait until the end of the season ?

  11. What is not acceptable? That Jaimie thinks that he wont be back till feb? Sturridge is coming back and it wont be long.

  12. I believe that is why Jordan Ibe has been brought back to allow Sterling and Sturridge a rest when needed.
I think Ibe will fill in for Sterling and Sterling will go up top in some games and then Sterling can sit some out and Ibe can start wide with Sturridge up top.

  13. Two Chelsea games and Bolton. Ibe could be a real contender for the West Ham line up after that..

  14. Dead right is Evans. We don't need more mediocre players to hamper Rossiter's progress. If he has such a brilliant shot on him, how come he's only scored three times in over 100 games.

  15. Most players coming to Liverpool will be doing so from 'smaller clubs'. They always have and hopefully always will, as that will mean that we have managed to remain in the top 25 teams in Europe.

  17. I have no idea who did that because it was SAS not just S. We all recognized Sturridge's massive impact not only last season but ever since he signed. He has a better goals to game ration compared to Luis.

  18. I think that Sturridge has gotten injured in the past because he was not ready and still rushed into the fray partly due to Brendan's desperation at the time. But, since results seem to have improved, Sturridge is only going to be introduced when ready. I believe him and Gerrard are going to be fundamental to our tough Feb period.

  19. I cant wait to see DAN back playing for this great team, but i think unless he has a heart and will of steal he will collapse due to the expectations.HOPE HE PROVES ME WRONG

  20. But truthfully the impact of his absence was not felt when Suaarez was LFC player, its either coz suarez excelled in his absence or LFC fans had bias towards DAN

  23. Jaimie, in what way do Delph's stats compare 'favourably' to Henderson's?? Leaving aside the omission of the one (match deciding) stat...assists (Delph 0 - Hendo 1) let's look at the stats you have listed. Hendo had better passing, clearly superior tackles won and interceptions...identical chances created (except one of his resulted in a goal) , duels and crosses (pretty much) Delph only comes out on top in shots and non of those troubled Mignolet unduly. I can't understand how you can reach that conclusion based on those stats.

Overall I agree that we need a better quality of player if we are to buy in from outside, although Delph is playing in a poor team and may improve he is not going to develop much more at 25. Milner is a better option on a free and is more versatile....and for a specialist cm Alex Song is available at the end of the season. Best to wait....if we do manage CL qualification Lars Bender and even Khedira (also free agent at the end of the season) might become options although it would be a real coup to get the latter

Add to it that Lovren is 25 and Fonte is 31 and these are just bitter comments after all Mata was coming off of 2 time Chelsea player of the year and PL team of the year and now Man U fans can't wait to offload him.
