'There's interest': Liverpool in talks to seal 'loan' transfer for 'nightmare' attacker

In recent weeks, exciting Liverpool starlet Sheyi Ojo has made the breakthrough into Brendan Rodgers' match-day squad, but despite that significant achievement, it appears that the club is about to farm the exciting attacker out on loan.

Ojo recently made the bench for Liverpool's Premier League games against Burnley and Leicester, but according to the Liverpool Echo:

* Several clubs have expressed an interest in taking the 17-year-old [on loan], including Wigan athletic.

* Liverpool 'are in talks' with Wigan over a temporary move for Ojo.

* Rodgers is 'impressed' by the development of Jordon Ibe during his loan spell, and believes a similar move could benefit Ojo.

Speaking to reporters this week, Liverpool under 21s manager Michael Beale confirmed:

"There’s a lot of interest around him in terms of loan. We’ve got to make sure it’s the right thing for Sheyi and if he goes out that he’s going to play. We’ve got a very good player on our hands"

The official LFC website describes Ojo as follows:

"[Ojo] is a pacey winger who can play on the left or right flank, he can be a nightmare for opposing defenders to play against".

Making the squad is a great achievement for Ojo, but given the competition - which includes the recently returned Jordon Ibe - there's practically zero chance of playing time, so going out on loan is probably a good idea. It worked well for Ibe, so maybe it'll also be beneficial for Ojo.

Loans are generally a good thing, but the reality is that if an attacking player is good enough he'll skip the loan process and go straight into the first team.

Raheem Sterling has proven that, and it's the same for every young attacking player who made it through the academy to become a first-team regular.

Gerrard, Owen, Fowler, and McManaman didn't go out on loan - like Sterling, they just went straight into the team, and the rest is history.

  1. How many players that we loaned out have actually succeeded?

  2. Wow imagine our future. Ojo on the right, Ibe on the left and Sterling through the middle! We'll never score but boy will we create a lot of chances!

  3. Would have been 12 had it been Suarez

  4. People often say that but I think you're missing the point of these loans. The loans are either meant as a final step in their development to determine whether they could make it in our first team or a stage to put them on to find buyers for them. When 19-year-old goes on loan to a league one or lower team, you can safely say he's in the shop window. When he goes to a Championship club you can say it's his final hurdle. It makes perfect sense. If a player cannot secure a regular spot at Derby, what are the chances of getting in ahead of our players? So yes many don't make it in the end but they have developed, have shown what they CAN do and that will help them find a new club. Both parties benefit from these loans.

  5. Hopefully not. Good steady player but not one that's gonna take us to the next level.

  6. I agree he isn't the caliber to take us to the next level but he is from what I have seen of him a decent player with a good goal scoring record. How many more points could we have with a steady player this season? Him and no one else would be a catastrophe but him and Origi behind Strurridge and (?) in the pecking order could be worse. But the (?) is a must.

  7. How I wish we bought Lacazette last summer ;(

  8. I heard (not sure how reliable) that we tried and he wasn't interested.

  9. I think he plays at Burnley

  10. So, basically, none of the players we have in the academy are good enough if sent out on loan because none of them seem to come back apart from Ibe thankfully. Pacheco, Suso and many others who could have made it have gone out on loan to never be seen again. If Sterling was sent out on loan, who knows what could have happened? For all we know, he might be playing in the Championship instead of being one of the stars at Liverpool. We do not put enough faith in young players and loans are IMO not a good indicator of progress.

  11. Well next year he won't no matter what happens but we are heavily linked.

  12. Not many, but that's kinda the point of loans...to weed out the ones who aren't good enough. The problem hasn't been sending guys on loan, the problem is we haven't had a very productive academy.

Like Eric said, loans mean 1 of 2 things. Either they're players on the way out with one last opportunity to impress (Assaidi, Borini last year, Aspas, Coates, etc) or they are for players who are close to the first team that might be good enough, but we can't take the risk of experimenting with them in the squad. For example, take Ilori.

Some players skip this step simply because their talent is obvious, we have room to experiment, or we need someone in that position and don't want to make a transfer.

  13. I'm not saying he's a bad player, I just don't think he's any better than Lambert or Borini. We are constantly buying these players hoping they'll develop and turn into world beaters, whilst our rivals buy proven quality. I'm not saying it's a bad policy but once in a while cant we go out and buy someone say like Lacazette or Higuain whose at the top of their game.

  14. I am in favour of the loan system but I feel we do not use the loan system for the right purpose. Very few of our players have been sent out on the loan for the second thing on your list. We usually just send players out on loan because we are done with them. As I said in my reply to Eric, if Sterling was sent out on loan as he was so close to being, he might not be playing for us now.

  15. I think he is better than both those players in key areas. He is far more quick and mobile than Lambert and his finishing and skill set are better than Borini's. He isn't far better just better.

  16. Right so. Him and Charlie Austin then

  17. Ronaldo got two for his small offense...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Basically yes. And I think that is supported by the fact that none of those players actually made it in the end at a club of our calibre. Where is Pacheco now? Where is Adam Morgan? Where is Lauri Dalla Valle? etc.

  19. Take a look at the lads we have out on loan at Cheltenham, they seem to be doing well and are a great advert for the academy.
I think they were only 1 month loans so Wilson, Dunn and the other lad (can't remember his name) should be back at the academy soon and we'll possibly get to see if their loans have helped them get closer to the first team or not.
Hopefully in Dunn's case it will as he had been training with the 1st team squad already and has scored a couple whilst on loan

  20. Why do some of you have such difficulty in understanding that not all acadamy youngsters turn out to be good enough? (I'll say again, where was the queue to sign Pacheco and Suso?) Sterling has made it, big. So why even try to make him part of you're argument. As for considering the loan club, that was already mentioned. "We must make sure if he goes out he's going to play"

    ReplyDelete
  21. At this moment I'd have him at LFC now for £5m, very low risk for a goal scorer in January. I'm sure he'd get goals, admittedly not 1 in every 2 games but as a back up to Studge he's better than what we have.

Although if we are really in for a buy now and loan back deal, I don't see the point and would say save the money and go for better targets next summer. We need goals now, not in July.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What is he? 22? Under21 international! On a virtually free next summer. Anything under 5m would be a no brained IMO. What's to lose for trying?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why? We got Supermario!

  24. Good decision.

Vladimir Jovovic. Good player to puchase and send on loan to Championship..

  25. How many players return from loan spells and break through into any top club? In fact how many youngsters break into top teams full stop? Hardly any. Throwing a load of academy players into the first team in a sink or swim capacity is a very short sighted way of doing things. Lallana was playing lower league football until his mid twenties. Up until last season Diego Costa was a bit part player at Atletico until last season. Everybody develops at different rates

  26. They would have locked him up and thrown away the key!

  27. Apparently the Ings 'buy-loan' deal would breach PL rule V7 according to Burnley chief exec so won't happen- tho could buy him outright I suppose

    ReplyDelete
  28. Seems a good idea; there's far too much competition in attacking
positions at the moment and Ibe should probably by right be the next player given a shot in the first team. If Ojo's going to develop his game and his strength at all then he needs to be playing regular football at a decent level and the highly competitive Championship is an ideal place for that. There needn't be any pressure on him to reach the heights of Fowler, McManaman and Sterling so quickly; some players are able to make that leap earlier than others - it's no sleight on his talent or his potential. A season in the Championship will help the club gauge what Ojo may be capable of in the future.

  30. I always wondered what happened to that Nacho kid. He was a star one day and then without a mention of it anywhere he left the club. I'm curious to know what really happened there.

  31. Apparently. Although I've never been able to find The Network Solution on a map. Not even the Google one.

  32. Is there anything you wouldn't drink to?.-)

  33. If we're buying anyone and loaning back, let it be Delle Alli. Can't believe we will let Newcastle get a kid this good who supports Liverpool ahead of us.
I will be gutted if we don't sign him and I think this and Rodgers not getting any cash for a striker could mean he is on his way at the end of the season.

  34. I'll drink to their swift demise.
