Redknapp: 'Amazing' £32m star BR wants to sign is 'proving them all wrong'. 2nd time lucky?

In December, multiple reports claimed that Liverpool were considering a massive £32m bid for 'amazing' Tottenham star Christian Eriksen, and according to Ex-Red Jamie Redknapp, the Danish Maestro is worth every penny.

For some inexplicable reason, Liverpool decided that £16m on Alberto and Aspas was a better deal that £11m on Eriksen, but the Dane is proving to be a blockbuster signing for Spurs, and Redknapp insists that Mauricio Pocchetino's team 'would be struggling' without him. He told the Daily Mail:

"He [Eriksen] is covering more ground and scoring vital late goals. He has hit three winners in the 88th minute or later. In Holland people felt he didn’t have the personality to take control of games [but]
he is proving them all wrong"

* Since signing, Eriksen has 29 goals/assists in 54 games for Spurs (goal/assist every 1.9 games), which is more than worth the paltry comparatively meagre £11m transfer fee.

* Compare that with revered LFC fan-favourite Coutinho - who has 25 goals/assists in 69 appearances for LFC - and it's clear that the Dane is doing fantastically well.

* Also, when it comes to chance creation this season, he's right up there with LFC's midfielders:

* Sterling: 40
* Gerrard: 31
* Eriksen: 34
* Henderson: 27 chances created.
* Lallana: 11
* Coutinho: 8

Prior to signing for Spurs, Eriksen admitted that Liverpool were an 'option', and revealed that he 'talked to Daniel Agger' in a bid to learn more about the Reds. With that in mind, I still can't understand the abnormal thought-process that reached the ridiculous conclusion that Alberto and Aspas = better deal.

Combined, those two cost £5m more than the Dane, and both abjectly failed to make any impact at Anfield. Now, if Liverpool want to rectify this mistake, the club will have to pay through the nose to secure the transfer, just like with Dejan Lovren, who cost the Reds £20m just a year after he signed for Southampton in an £8m deal.

It's transfer negligence of the highest order (IMO), and Liverpool need to arrest the seemingly inexorable negative trend of missing out on (comparatively) cheap players, and then being fleeced after the fact.

I'm a big fan of Eriksen, but €40m? Absolutely no chance. The ship has sailed on this particular transfer; Liverpool had the chance to sign him, but totally blew it, and unless the price is around the £20m mark, the Reds should steer clear.

  1. He's a superb player and we really did miss out not signing him and I feel he will only get better and better as he finds his feet in the Prem.

  2. I think it is exaggerating it a bit saying

    "It's transfer negligence of the highest order"

    Liverpool came second that year so he was not needed last season , plus maybe he was not content with a bench role or fighting for his place with Coutinho.

  3. Lol Liverpool scouted him for Spurs.

  4. He was cheap for 11 m but when you have coutinho, sterling and lallana who needs him..

  5. Exactly we dont know if he would same impact here
    we play a faster game, more expansive football like Balotelli failed
    plus at spurs he is a big fish in a small pond
    at liverpool he would just be another player ,

  6. Completely agree. Firmino will become Eriksen v2.0 if we don't act, though to be fair we don't need any more AMs

  7. Sterling,Coutinho,Lallana,Markovic,Ibe

  8. Goalie striker DM. Priorities PLEASE!!!!!!! If we want to put and end to whacky transfers this window we have to sell people and buy only our priorities!!!!!

  9. Lucas has won over dm for me

  10. You don't think lucas is good enough???

  11. Striker with
    Sterling as striker becomes less of a need, he can play there and score, with Jordon Ibe vacating his Cam/Winger position makes sense . Then origi will join as well so we have that covered

  12. If we sign a spurs player it has to be Hugo Lloris
    but i dont want fancy lfc negotiating with Daniel Levy
    i think we even have more chance for De Gea

  13. Ha ha. Very funny. A "kite flying" rumour from the ex press citing "sources in Denmark", back in Dec. and JK thinks it worth regurgitating. Mischievous indeed.

  14. The summer we signed Aspas and Alberto was an utter joke even more so than this one was. It wouldnt be so bad if other clubs unearthed these gems but they are always such obvious targets.

  15. Origi not coming, IMO this window......

  16. Is Lucas staying or going? I am not sure. He has played very well in the last 6 games or so but we need a second if he gets tired, injured or reverts to less useful form. With our shaky back line and goalie, Can is making a very positive impact back there so we can't count him as a DM right now.....

  17. The list of sales is far longer than the list of buys. Let's move them and get the funds to move forward...I thought Aspas and Alberto were sold. If they are loaned, is their current team looking to buy them? Anyone know?

  19. Hindsight is 20-20. We have great MFs now...need a striker...although RS seems to be catching on.

  20. Can will end up DM if lucas leaves. But there's no way Rodgers would be crazy enough to let lucas go . agree we need a keeper even though mignolet has improved the last 3 or 4 games. Going to be hard to get top keeper in January tho..

  21. Perhaps, but bear in mind his stats vs Coutinho are skewed by the fact that he takes their attacking set pieces, whereas SG does most of ours

  22. Wow!!! Another Sakho piece

  23. contrived controversy over nothing.................

  24. absolutely correct along with a Goalie and a DM. Sterling seems to be getting closer but sturridge is still fragile. we might consider two strikers unless we sign one and convert another person

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can't think of a reason for Sakho not to be our long-term solution.

  27. tino and lallana are very similar in style ..we need some power in midfield

  28. Pulis' ethos is more about defending as a unit. He's been very successful at it and you do him a disservice.

    He gets more out of the assets at his disposal than you give him credit for.

  29. Why can't (or won't) Canos make it? If you're daring enough to make statements like that be equally bold and back them up with fact or opinion.
