BR confirms: £16m LFC deal for 'monster' striker is under 'discussion' at Anfield. Good news?

The Divock Origi transfer saga rumbles on, and although Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has publicly ruled out a January return for the young striker, it seems that he's changed his mind, and is now actively trying to cut-short the 'monster' striker's loan spell with Lille.

When asked in December about Origi's status, Rodgers dismissed reports that the striker will 'come back early':

"The deal was put in place quite clearly in the summer that he would stay at Lille for the season, and then we would get him after that. As far as I'm concerned, that's still the case."

On Friday, Rodgers appeared to backtrack on his earlier comments, when he told reporters:

"He [Origi] is a player that will definitely be here next summer. Whether he will be here in January has been under discussion, but nothing more to report on it."

Clearly, if Liverpool are in 'discussion' with Lille, then there can only be one reason for that: the club is trying to negotiate a compensation package to facilitate Origi's early arrival at Anfield.

Lille are certainly amenable to a deal, and Director Jean-Michel Van Damme confirmed this last week:

"Origi to Liverpool? We haven't received any proposal, but they could offer €7M in January"

If Liverpool spend another €7m (£6m) on Origi to quash his loan spell, then that will make his transfer fee £16m overall, which - like Markovic - is ridiculously inflated.

Liverpool desperately need a new striker, but I am totally against breaking Origi's loan spell. After spending £120m over the summer, Liverpool shouldn't need to rely on him for a mid-season boost, and the fact it's even being contemplated is just another sad indictment of Rodgers' suspect performance in the transfer market.

That said, from a business point of view, spending an extra €7m on Origi makes more financial sense that splurging £20m on another striker, but there's no guarantee the youngster will perform. He'll be under intolerable pressure to make an impact, and if he fails to do the business, it could have a negative impact on his development/confidence.

With only 4 goals in 27 appearances this season, Origi appears to be wilting under the pressure at Lille. He hasn't scored since the 27th September, and the ire of the club's fans appears to be having a negative impact on him. If he can't handle the expectation at Lille, how is he going to fare at Liverpool, where the pressure is exponentially worse?

  1. Origi is being wasted at Lille

    1) The team is defensive , they shut up shop 99% times
    2) They bar Balmont have no creative players
    3) He is being played out wide

So i would not look too much into his stats
At Belgium he is a hit because he is being played up front with creative players lie Hazard,Mertens,De bruyne,Mirrales ,Witsel
At lfc he will play attacking up front with the likes of Sterling,Coutinho,
Lallana,Markovic ,Ibe,Sturridge almost as good as he gets at Belgium

  2. In his defence he has been used mainly as a winger at lille..

  3. Good to know you have a good footballing brain , not many on here , i think : )

  4. Memphis Depay, Ross barkley. Mat hummels. Asmer bogovic. I wish....

  5. You cannot isolate a keeper's performance from the rest of the team. I'll never buy into this notion.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Begovic would be a great buy!

  7. Hart really isn't that good you know. Fluffs his lines too often. He acts like a mad man at times. I actually think he has a problem 'upstairs'.

    ReplyDelete
  8. What if they do not hit ground running
    are they waste of money?

    ReplyDelete
  9. We saw that with Brad Jones too, who supposedly had better stats than Mignolet. The performances didn't show though.

  10. Coutinho, Lallana, Can, Sakho, Sterling, Sturridge, Henderson, Moreno... no need to wish...

  11. A good keeper needed regardless..maybe back up for sturridge otherwise gamble on origi and sterling to do the business up front if sturridge gets injured. A new keeper is the most thing we need tho..

  12. I would rather we save 6 million and put it towards Lacazette. If we sell Borini or Lambert , there's a bit more towards Lacazette

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sell Borini and Lambert.....throw Allen in for good measure....if we can have Lacazette.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And stick with mignolet?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lacazette is not coming to Liverpool. If we had gone for him two years ago, fine. But not now. At this point he's going to one of the established CL sides. Just forget it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ya selling Joe Allen would really help.im sure he'd make at least 50 or 60 quid!

  17. Till the summer yes

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lyon have suggested they would accept a big offer so why not

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lacazette is not needed
we have Origi who can replicate it

Look at Lacazettes stats as a winger 9 goals as a winger in first 70 games
Origi 9 goals 57 games as a winger

So if we put Origi in his natural position like Lille did with Origi whats to say he will not score 35 goals in 57
he looks awesome for Belgium unplayable in his correct position

    ReplyDelete
  20. Origi
    9 goals as a winger 57 games
Lacazette first 70 games 9 goals mainly playing out wide

so we should wait to see what Origi does in his right position with the likes of Sterling,Coutinho,Markovic feeding him

    ReplyDelete
  21. No guarantee he will score a lot of goals in England
it took him 4 seasons to have a good season in France
what if he takes 2,3 here or does not adapt at all like Djibril Cisse?

    ReplyDelete
  22. No signing is guaranteed, we all know that.

There is just something a bit different about Lacazette that I like. He's got that pace and directness but with a bit of unpredictability like Suarez had.

By the summer I would love to see Sturridge, Lacazette, Origi and Balotelli. You have to admit that looks tasty

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why balotelli ? He's been terrible since he came here?

    ReplyDelete
  24. True i agree with you
If we sign anyone it should be Lacazette in summer and maybe a keeper we are stocked everywhere else.

But we also got emerging talent like Origi,Sterling,Markovic,Ibe
i think Sterling can be a better striker then Lacazette and i want Ibe taking position Sterling vacates , We cant wast Ibes talent
    that way we save money

    so like this:
    .....................................Sturridge/Origi
    Ibe/Markovic............................................Sterling

with Sterling ,Origi/Sturridge rotating continuously like SAS did last year
    I

  25. Off topic- check out Milan set up 2 walls for their own free kick- didn't work

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fair point.
I think he needs to be partnered with a pacey striker who runs off the shoulders of defenders stretching the defence. Unfortunately with Sturridge out we had nobody else to do it. When BR finally turned to Sterling, he never really tried Balo with him. All 3 other strikers would have that pace and directness so Balo would give us that different option when needed in certain games ........ hopefully

  27. I think he looks decent too. But why would he come to Liverpool? Why gamble on a winter move to a side not guaranteed CL football? I don't think it would make sense for him unless we offered stupid wages and conditions, probably including clauses allowing him to move to Madrid or Barcelona. And that would be a daft thing for us to do, gambling on a player who's only started to find his goalscoring abilities in the last couple of seasons in a second rate league.

The other thing about Lacazette is that he doesn't have obvious world class ability. Nice player, sure, but he might just be a good player in great form, who knows. Given the cost, it just doesn't look like a gamble worth taking. If we qualify for the CL, it might be worth throwing our hat into the ring, because we'd have a chance at getting him on sensible money, depending on what the other clubs decide to do. Lacazette himself will be waiting until the summer to see if one of the big money and glamour clubs come in for him, if he's got any sense.

Nah, that one ain't happening. Origi looks great for us though, looking forward to seeing him roll into town, I think he's going to be a hit. Feel sorry for him stuck at Lille.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's true . he's so frustrating to watch tho the way he walks around the pitch.it has to annoy the rest of the lads that are working their socks off . think he needs to go..

    ReplyDelete
  29. ...two years ago :) He's been pretty poor this season.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree Ibe does look a talent which BR has to utilise now or what was the point of recalling him. I think Sterling is an option up front but still prefer him deeper allowing him to run at defenders more

    ReplyDelete
  31. Robo I think Lacazette is exactly the sort of player that we might be able to tempt without the guarantee of CL football. A player that is on the cusp of greatness but not necessarily a player that the big boys in England or Spain will gamble on yet. So if he wants to play in those leagues he might have to risk it himself a bit first. Which in some ways was what Suarez did

  32. What we do need is a goal keeper, an attacking midfielder who can score goals, a strong and powerful quality forward, what we don't need is no more below average signings, and last of all a proper manager who his job.....because this inept arrogant and embarrassing manager is nothing short of clueless.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lacazette would be a dream transfer but we need an established striker
I would consider Bafetimbi Gomis or Benteke. Big men with pace!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sorry about the grammar it happens frequently when I'm ranting on about Rodgers. This guy really gets under my skin, my dislike of him is purely in football terms, I truly believe that he is not the answer to what this club needs.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I strongly disagree about Rodgers, but I'd be interested to hear one of you guys who hate him explain what it is you don't like about him. I don't mean just use adjectives to describe how he seems to you -- arrogant, inept, embarrassing -- but to try and explain exactly what it is.

Others rate him highly. Why is that, do you think? I'd really like to know what it is about him that gets under the skin of people like you. A lot of sensible and knowledgeable fans and football people like him a lot. Very few of his former players have had anything but high praise for him. The other managers rated him highly enough to vote for him as manager of the year. But some Liverpool fans treat him as a hate figure in a way that seems, to some of us, to make no sense at all!

So yeah -- can you say more?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Has turned it around in recent weeks no?

  37. Would having Iker Cassillas worry you.

  38. Our chance is gone...........

We were in CL, Spurs weren't
We had the money, Spurs already blew that.... now we have blown ours & Spurs have recollected some
Levy screwed us in multiple Transfer windows, we didn't take our chance to return the complement for once.......

All I am trying to say that, last July was a great opportunity for us to throw 23-25mn & bring one of top 5 GKs in world...at 27, still best 8-10 years of him to come....

    ReplyDelete
  39. I still think saves per goal needs to factor into these GK discussions. Ryan however would be great. Hes been playing out of his skin for Australia in the Asian cup. Excellent shot stopper and very comfortable with his feet so he would suit us. Hes only 5"11 but his vertical leap is pretty incredible so he somewhat makes up for it. At 22 has the potential to push on to even greater heights.

  40. Sheikh Shamsy has a point, labelling cehc a reject is fair because atm he is argubally not good enough to make chelseas team therefore he is a reject. Suarez and ronaldo arent and werent rejects because they were the best players at man utd and liverpool. so basically a reject is a player who is struggling to make it into the first 11 of the club they are at, so sturridge was a reject but proved to be a good buy because we unearthed his potntial and chelsea couldnt

    ReplyDelete
  41. True Hart is error prone and has made high profile errors for England and Man City but, because he is english it gets glossed over as lack of confidence or poor defending by Man City defenders

    ReplyDelete
  42. Lets be honets, West ham are good this season but, we should beat them at home. Everton is gonna be tough cus its a derby but, they are on a poor run of form. Tottenham at home we should be getting a draw. Southampton and man city are the real tough ones cus but i feel that with southamptons injuries we could probabaly nick the win and get draw against city at hom, god forbid we shouldn lose any of those games, and im not being optomistic im being realistic

    ReplyDelete
  43. Iker Cassillas is a legend and has broken more records than any goal keeper i can think of, so it wouldnt be smart to compare Ryan to St Iker

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sturridge should be back by West Ham game and hopefully will be scoring by then- but it's gonna be tough- 9 pts and no defeats would be acceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well so height is no problem why mention it then.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My original point was Robben was once a Chelsea reject but he's still brilliant

    ReplyDelete
  47. Who exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Looking at various clips of him on youtube, I cant help but see that he is miles ahead of Mignolet, let alone Jones. Only prioblem for him is he isnt being hyped up enough because he is from a football minor, as opposed to Belgium. At the reported 2/4million, he would be a steal and would solve a lot of goalkeeping problems. I see him displacing Migs permenantly

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have watched several videos of him e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1Emol3m-mk,

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1DifKWS8XY,

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LabDqtfF4No,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIm3XHNv_vw and I must say he shows a lot more steel than Migs. Im not bothered by the stats(which by the way, are better than Migs)'he looks the deal

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ryan is a brilliant GK, but he is listed at 5'11.5" (181 cm).... 'll it be an issue? EPL is not exactly Belgium League, neither WC, where referees blow whistle if the GK is gets knocked down from the wind of a rushing forward.........

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes, it would. That's not to say that being below average height for a goalkeeper means that you can't be any good. But you have to be able to compensate in other ways, particularly in the very physical EPL. You yourself questioned whether crosses would cause him a problem. Let's also not forget that our defence has generally been woeful at dealing with crosses over the past few seasons.

As to Casillas, some say he's 6 ft, some say 6 ft 1 inch. In any case, his 'Ape Index' is greater than 1 which helps compensate for his less-than-average height.

    ReplyDelete
  52. If you read what i wrote he is 22 still a baby by keeping standards and have watched him quite a bit he has potential we are not going to pay 80k p.w for a keeper to sit on the bench.
