Next Transfer? Liverpool make €10m offer for 33-goal striker who's 'like Aguero'

Last week, Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato claimed that Liverpool were in talks with Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño (CP) over the possibility of signing highly-rated starlet Sergio Diaz, who and it appears that the Reds are pressing ahead with the deal.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca this week, Liverpool have put in a €10m offer for Diaz, who is currently in Uruguay for the South American Under 20 Championship.

Some info about Diaz:

* Debut at 15 for CP in the Paraguayan Primeira division.

* Scored 30 goals in one season for CP's U15 team.
* 8 goals in his debut season for CP.
* Scored 5 senior goals for CP before turning 16.
* Part of the same youth team as Juan Iturbe, another LFC target.

Diaz is often compared to Sergio Aguero, and in a recent radio interview, he explained:

"I am like Kun Agüero - I have the same characteristics, including speed and goals, and I scored 30 goals for for the U15 team"

Cerro Porteño U15 coach Diego Gavilan appears to agree with that assessment. After Diaz's promotion to the first team, he enthused:

"He [Diaz] is definitely like Agüero. He's strong, technical and his main objective is to find the goal. He scored 33 goals in less than six months, something that no young player has ever done here"

This all sounds very promising, but without European lineage, and appearances for the Paraguay national team, it's surely going to be incredibly difficult for Liverpool to secure a work-permit.

Additionally, €10m is a hugely inflated amount for a 16-year old, and if Liverpool end up paying that, it will be the biggest transfer fee in Paraguayan history, which could conceivably put huge pressure on Diaz's shoulders.

It may all be moot though - according to the Porteno Chief Juan José Zapag, Diaz will 'stay at Cerro until he's 18 years old', and that is clearly the right thing to do.

  1. Not on topic with the article, but I read this earlier and I think some people on here should take a little look-see before they comment on how transfer dealings should work....

By the way, I agree with what JK is saying in this one... wow 2 articles in a row!

  3. It's very interesting. Now look up Jorge Mendes the most powerful man in football the guardian and look at his client list and delas he has done. You will notice massive names and Liverpool not being involved. Is HE one of the reasons that other teams can do deals much better and easier for these players? Is HE the reason Valdes went to United? I think there is enough there to spark a discussion.

  6. Could be a good signing.

I imagine LFC is a good place for young attacking players to go to develop and get into the first team

  14. nice little read there, the part that stands out to me is the agent saying i wont deal with clubs that dont pay agent fees.
It just makes you wonder that if a player who is a life time LFC fan gets told by his agent (who ofcourse is looking out for the players best interest *cough cough*) LFC isnt a good move, all because they arent connected with the right agent or wont pay agent fees.

  15. Geez 10m for a 16 year old? and Odegaard earning 80k a week? no wonder Sterling wants over 100k a week.
id rather see the 10m go towards the youth academy and find our own youngsters who will be worth 10m at 16 (easier said than done).

  18. Exactly my point at the time of all the hysteria. There are far worse things that happen in football. In that they are more dangerous yet the bite was SUCH a big deal. As horrible as it was it wasn't career threatening.

  23. For once i believe Torres could have done the business for liverpool ,like he is doing under DIEGO SIMEON.Imagine him been paired with sterling and sturlidge mien

  24. I seem to remeber LFC turning down the chance to sign a young Aguero( the real Aguero) and look how he turned out, if this kid is even half as good €10m shouldn't be that big a deal.

  25. Sterlings deal delay has to do with his agents parting ways, and not his supposed refusal to sign.. They need to sort out their own business before the Sterling deal can be finalised. so take no notice when your told he refused the deal, because thats bull.
