Done Deal? LFC to try and sign £10m star who'll be 'better' than Sterling (in his opinion)

On Thursday, Brendan Rodgers claimed once again that Liverpool are not planning to sign anyone this week, but new reports suggests that Liverpool are now on the verge of signing Burnley striker Danny Ings.

According to the BBC today:

* Liverpool will 'attempt to sign' ings before the transfer window close on Monday.

* Rodgers' plan is to loan the 22-year-old back to Burnley for the rest of the season.

* £10m-rated Ings is out of contract in the summer, but Liverpool will still need to pay a fee as he's under 24.

* Burnley allegedly want a £10m transfer fee for Ings.

Liverpool have been linked with Ings several times in the past, so it's no real surprise that Rodgers is pursuing the striker.

DEC 2013: Multiple reports claimed that Liverpool LFC scouts watched Ings old several times over the preceding month.

JAN 2014: The Daily Mail reported: "Liverpool are among the Barclays Premier League clubs tracking Burnley striker Danny Ings".

Ings' stats:

* Bournemouth: 8 goals/3 assists in 29 apps.
* Goal every 3.6 games | Goal/assist every 2.6 games.

* Burnley: 39 goals/13 assists in 114 apps.
* Goal every 2.9 games | Goal/assist every 2.1 games.

* This season: 7 goals/3 assists in 21 apps.
* Goal every 3 games | Goal/assist every 2.1 games.

* TOTALS: 47 goals/16 assists in 143 apps
* Goal every 3 games | Goal/assist every 2.3 games.

Stats: OPTA

Ings - recently described by Spurs star Eric Dier as a 'massive threat' and a 'dangerous player' - clearly appears to have the right attitude. In an interview last season with the Lancashire Telegraph, he vowed to become a 'better player' than the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Ravel Morrison, and LFC's Raheem Sterling. He noted:

“It’s really good [to play alongside Zaha, Sterling and Morrison] but to be honest, I look at them and think: ‘I want to do better than you and push myself further than you and become a better player’. And that’s what I’ll strive for every day.”

Ex-Red Jamie Redknapp is a fan of Ings, and he's convinced that the striker is 'destined for bigger things'. In a recent column for the Daily Mail, Redknapp enthused:

“He [Ings] is a fantastic young player. He has the work-rate, technique and the temperament to became a top player and, Chelsea or Manchester City apart, he could improve any side in this League"

I have mixed feelings about this particular deal:

* Ings is not a prolific goalscorer. He's done well over the last year, but between 2010 and 2013, he grabbed just 14 goals overall.

* 7 goals in 19 Premier League games is creditable, but it's not the greatest strike rate. As a comparison: ex-Burnley striker Charlie Austin has 13 Prem goals in 20 games this season, and like Ings, he was in the Championship last season.

* Ings' injury history is also a concern: This year alone, he's suffered hamstring and ankle ligament injuries, and with Sturridge already injury prone, LFC don't need another striker who may be susceptible to problems.

* It's a risk to spend £5m-£10m on a Championship striker so early in his Premier League career. Who's to say that Ings won't turn out to be a one-season wonder, or even a half-season wonder?

* He may turn out to be an upgrade on the likes of Borini and Lambert, but Ings will not (IMO) take Liverpool to the next level.

Burnley are due £3m compensation if Ings leaves next summer, but if they sell in January - which appears to be LFC's preference - then the club will probably hold out for the biggest fee they can get.

And why not? Ings is a major asset; Burnley should try and maximise his value, and that probably means that Liverpool will be forced to pay through the nose (yet again) for a British player.

It may all be moot, though, as Burnley Chief executive Lee Hoos claims that a deal is not going to happen. This afternoon, he told reporters:

"This type of move would violate Premier League rule V7 regarding transfers so it simply cannot happen. Ings, manager Sean Dyche and the chairman have made it clear he won’t be going anywhere and we consider that the end of the matter."

Denials likes this are not worth the air into which they're uttered. Money talks, and if there's a way Burnley can cash-in, then history suggests that the club will almost certainly consider a deal.

That said, if Ings is a no-go, Charlie Austin appears to be a good (and arguably better) option:

* More prolific in the Prem (13 goals in 20 apps).
* Older and more experienced.
* 17 goals/assists in 21 apps this season.
* 40 goals/assists in 58 apps for QPR overall.
* Career total: 134 goals/assists in 209 apps.
* Goal/assist every 1.5 apps (vs. Ings = 1 every 2.3 apps)
* Injury free for the last four years.

  1. The deal only breaks the rules if his registration goes from Burnley to Liverpool officially, there is no reason for that to happen before the summer, we can simply do the deal with Burnley and not transfer his registration!!!

  2. Surely he will be able to at least sign a pre contract. Same end result, no fee.

    ReplyDelete
  3. There is a fee because he is under 24 years of age, If he goes to a foreign club Burnley get 1/10th of the fee an English club would have to pay.....................Burnley know this!!!.........................He can sign a pre-contract only with a foreign club now!!!

  4. Both QPR and Burnley need goals to stay up so why sell their strikers

  5. We really need a striker and after the awful start we made to the season I think we must sign one during this window. We have Sturridge back soon and although we have looked really decent over the past six weeks or so, everyone can see that more goals are needed. We were the better team over the two legs with Chelsea and with a proven goalscorer I am sure we would have won the tie. Not certain if Ings is the answer but I bet most of us Reds would take a punt right now!

  6. You simply do a deal with the club, without registering the player, simple as that..................meaning you complete the paperwork in the summer!!!.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I thibk there is still a nominal fee.

    ReplyDelete
  8. We dont need another young striker especially with such record (we also have Origi coming in the summer. I would rather us keep the 10M, add 10M+ to it in the summer, and get a decent striker.

  9. He won't sign a new deal, so they have to get money now and Liverpool can do the deal, by taking a first option agreement, leaving him at Burnley as is!!

  10. Someone who actually knows the transfer market rules... I like it :D

  11. If we snooze we lose so we should grab him

    ReplyDelete
  12. I like Ings imo he's better than the 3 we have at the minute if we can get him that's great- I did not know he wants out

    ReplyDelete
  13. He's scored more than our 3 combined so he can definitely do it

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes but Ings wants out, so they have little choice!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Is he good enough???

    ReplyDelete
  16. They don't want to sell him ( Ings)

  17. My point is that who knows how well they could have done at our club. Loans never tell the whole story and those players could have easily done a Harry Kane and become our stars. Remember how Flanno was supposedly never good enough until Rodgers put him in and then we saw what he was made of. We never showed faith in our academy players and by farming them out on loan, we failed to utilise anything they could have brought to the table.

  18. I have done a postal vote ;-)

  19. Elite clubs and managers don't have the luxury of being able to show faith in all promising youngsters.
    I don't think when Rodgers was interviewed by FSG, if his mantra had been "show faith in youth and anything can happen" that he'd have got the job

  20. i voted "vote" because - ah screw it, it's not going to be funny anyways

  21. Another Andy Carroll (Not playing style) type deal, where the player has a decent start to his prem career. And its not easy getting to Liverpool and start performing for a player who is not known to exhibit much aggression (A key characteristic to succeed at Liverpool as a goal scorer).

    ReplyDelete
  22. Very good player, Rodgers building a young hungry side. Rather have him than ballo!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Danny Ings? No thanks! I hope we snooze and lose.We can do better.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Better than Borini Lambert and Balo? Not difficult. No big players will sign for Rodgers money or not

    ReplyDelete
  25. Leave the jokes to NGCtC (or whatever he goes by these days).

  26. A random pensioner from a old peoples home would do better than three you mentioned.We've had a few knock backs in the transfer market but settling for a dilution in quality isn't going to get us challenging again.
    The form Lacazette (my first choice) is in we have no chance of getting that deal done.He's hot property.
    I would've realistically liked Liverpool to go after Vietto (who has the potential to be world class) on a similar buy and loan back deal until the end of this season.

  27. The issue is not the eligibility of signing the player but the question all LFC fan should be asking is;can he take LFC to the next level?The answer is practical no,LFC needs a prolific scorer not average striker,moreover LFC has origi why waste money on ings/

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lacazette yes please-would rather Ings than Borini so 1 out 1 in and continue the search

    ReplyDelete
  29. You ask, what is the point of a loan. I think Eric already answered that. Football history is littered with stories of prodigies that didn't make it and late developers that did. Off ttomh I can't think of any player that reds have loaned out and subsequently let go, who has come back to bite us in the bum. Wisdom is currently on loan in the prem. Would we write him off yet?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ings! ffs what have we become? what another terrible decision if anything about this story is true. why aren't we going for Delle Ali? absolutely criminal.

    ReplyDelete
  31. StoneLeech I'm with you bud.It seems like most want the deal to happen.But to me this deal is like getting a lap dance from a Sumo Wrestler.It doesn't get me excited.
    It looks like Newcastle will get Dele Alli and we'll buy him from them for £25m the summer after next.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This would be a horrible move. I'm sure we'll sign him

    ReplyDelete
  33. He has said goodbye for the last time.....

  34. JockInTheKop you called for this system switch a few months back.I argued it's a very hard formation to get right using it as your primary system.It's early days but Brendan Rodgers is proving me wrong.We're playing good stuff, looking more solid defensively and getting decent results.When Daniel Sturridge returns we'll rocket up this average league!

    ReplyDelete
  35. 4m offer rejected supposedly

    ReplyDelete
  36. I was all for Ings for 5m to come in now even if he only got 7 or 8 goals for us. Didn't realise Charlie Austin had been as good as he has this season, for anything around £10m or less I'd take him now. We need someone who can be trusted to chip in fairly consistently and take some of the inevitable pressure off Sturridge. They don't need to be a world beater, just reasonably mobile and a decent enough finisher to tuck away a few of the zillion chances we create.
    Harry always seems to be up for a deal: £10m, Sheyi Ojo and Jerome Sinclair end of season loans...? Although I doubt QPR would be that crazy haha.
    I wonder if they'd be crazy enough to go for £10m and Borini till the end of the season? Of course, someone would have to do the "Mr T drugged milk" trick on Borini to get him down to London.

    ReplyDelete
  37. As far as I'm aware, Ings wants to stay with Burnley and help them retain their premier league status.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Not sure about Ings. If we get get him for a paltry fee then it's probably worth doing. He may turn out to be a very useful squad player and if he doesn't then we'll definitely make a profit on him.
    I understand that a lot of fans want to see the club spend serious money and bring in big names, but good value should not be sneezed at either. If a good player is available for nothing or next to nothing and he fits our profile then it would be bad business not to sign him. Not that I'm saying I'm for the signing of Ings but I'm not against it either. He'll either work out or the club will make more than they paid for him selling him on.
    Personally I wouldn't be surprised if Borini, Balotelli and possibly Lambert were all gone come the summer at which point Ings would have a place in our squad along with Origi and then would be the time to try and sign a more established striker.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ings and Burnley made a statement this evening saying he will not leave.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Totally agree bud. I'm not saying this formation is the best long term solution but I feel it maximises the players at our disposal at the moment

    ReplyDelete
  41. No more average Joes! This is killing the club. I'd rather pay top whack for him once he's proven himself somewhere else than risk another mediocre buy. What he's done at Burnley is admirable but not earth shattering. Our scouting must be tripe if this is the best they come up with!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Another cheap option by the tight ass Americans FSG

    ReplyDelete
  43. The only way I would want Ings is if we do a swap deal for Joe Allen. Having said that, it is a bit unfair to use his stats from 2010 when he was a 17 year old. And although his stats haven't been great they are still better than Raheem's in the scoring and assist department. Having said that, I still say No Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. We don't need any ''who'll be better than ______'' players. We need players who will come in and do the job they are asked to do. I'm sorry, but Danny Ings is not someone we need.

    Liverpool need to set priorities. Do they want to become a team that buys and develops young players (Dortmund), or one that buys already notable players (Chelsea). The former is a much riskier approach, and to do something like that, you need a reputation. You need to give a reason as to why a young player would join our club, rather than Madrid or Bayern, Odegaard being a perfect example. Why join current shitty Liverpool when you can join champions league winning Madrid?

    It would be much less of a risk if we stopped going for the Delphs and Lavezzis and started spending more on the Costas and the Vidals. Overpay if you have to. At least there is a 90% chance they will still perform.

    This may be an off topic ramble, but it's still true. Ings WONT be an addition to any side. Sorry, but it's true. Cuadrado on the other hand, I very much doubt he'll be useless. We need players who will make an impact right away, otherwise we will stay in the middle of the Prem for ever. Man U did the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  45. LFC need two more like Sterling and Coutinho upfront as backup.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I vote against getting Ings but you wouldnt know it.

    Because all the money is gone

  48. I look forward to a future article from JK when he calls on the result of this poll to justify his assertion that we do/don't want Ings at any cost.....I hear the result is balanced on a knife edge

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would have Ibe and ojo in my squad than markovic.. he can only poor touch, has defensive value... Technically unaware of hia mates playing style... And worse than cant shoot at goal.... Waste of money... Look at ibe he is more developed than markovic... Rodgers still looking for Ings... We lost shAqiri, salah, makhatrian and others.... It is realy painfull....

  50. The rumour is that BR would buy him and lease him back to Burnley for the rest of the season.
    Maybe a swop with Lambert would be better.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Under PL rules, your not allowed to buy a player and loan him straight back to the selling club, so thats a non starter.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm gonna kill BR and get Rafa back if that happens.
