'Liverpool want him?': Agent reveals £30m striker's 'future' transfer plans. Next stop LFC?

On Monday, multiple reports claimed that Liverpool were planning to activate Gonzalo Higuain's £30m release clause in a bid to sign the prolific striker 'before the end of January'. The Reds have been constantly linked with the 'lethal' Argentine over the last three years, but is there any truth to this particular rumour?

When asked specifically about Liverpool's alleged interest, Higuain's agent offered described Napoli boss Aurelio De Laurentis as a 'man of honour' and insisted that the striker is 'happy' at Napoli. He also added:

“Do Liverpool want Higuain? I haven’t spoken to any club, firstly because they haven’t called me and secondly because it would be disrespectful.

“We’re not thinking about leaving Napoli I’m confident that the team can make third place, and then we’ll see about Gonzalo’s future"

At first glance, it appears that the agent is ruling out a move to Anfield, but in reality, it's the same statement that most agents give in response to transfer queries:

* pay lip-service to the player's loyalty to their current club.
* Insist the player is happy and not thinking about leaving.
* Contradict that by suggesting the player will consider their future in the summer.

In my view, Higuain's agent has clarified nothing nothing here, and reading between the lines, it seems that the 27-year old will almost certainly be available in the summer, especially if Napoli fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Higuain - nicknamed 'El Pipita' - is a cut above the players Rodgers usually signs, and he represents a significant upgrade on Borini, Lambert, and Balotelli, but as much as I'd love to see him at Anfield, I honestly can't see why he'd sign for Liverpool.

Higuain is 27, which means his next contract will his last as a top-class player in his prime, and he'll want to win trophies in the last few remaining years of his top-level career. As such, he'll probably opt for a team that consistently challenges for trophies, and right now, that isn't Liverpool.

In the club's current situation, Brendan Rodgers does not have the pull to attract a player like Higuain, and the only way the Reds will be able to sign him (and players of similar quality) is if Rodgers is replaced by an internationally renowned manager.

One thing's for sure: Higuain is the real deal, and his creative stats prove that:

* 232 goals/assists in 337 apps for Napoli and Real Madrid
* Goal/assist every 1.4 games.
* 20-25+ goals/assists every year for the last six years.

Yes please.

  7. JK that bit about only being able to attract star players with an internationally renowned manager is just nonsense. Correct me if I'm wrong but was Mark Hughes not the manager when city signed Robinho? Hardly an internationally renowned manager. Point is most players are going to go where the money is which was why teams like Malaga and Monaco were able to attract "star players". How did that model work out for them? We could've had Falcao if we'd been prepared to pay him 265k a week but thank god we didn't go for that.
Higuain isn't the answer for me anyway although he would bring undoubted quality to the team but that doesn't always work. Remember Morientes? Brilliant at every club before and after Liverpool but he was hopeless for us.

  8. I guess the way I look at it is... Rodgers can't be trusted to spend 10m on a player... why would we trust him to spend 30m on a player?

  9. My opinion/guess is that he'll have to sell before he buys this window.

  10. br wont be given a single penny let alone 30 million, he has had his pocket money and blew it

  11. There are other strikers out there for alot less than £30m, that will give us the same or more than Higuain, and give us more years than Higuian will.. For me this move is a non starter.

  14. It would appear from Falcao's current position at Utd, that we definately dodged an expensive bullet for the doom mongers to shot Rodgers with...

  15. Cue the rediculous claim that because Hughes was a famous player that made all the difference.

  16. Perhaps because the chance of getting a ten million pound player than works out is less likely than a thirty million pound player. Less money more of a punt type situation.

  17. I agree, but at the end of January I would sure like to see a reliable striker on the pitch besides Sturridge.

  18. Off topic- Ski fans think Star Wars characters play for them ( ITV)

  19. Exactly. Doubt Robinho grew up watching old clips of Mark Hughes in his pomp playing on some turnip field of a pitch. He was a good player tho

  20. Rodgers went after £30m players such as Willian, Sanchez and Costa so your point is moot.

  21. Neither will brendan rodgers. Lol

  22. And we have a winner.

  23. Lets just break the bank for Lacazette? What is the bet he will end up at either City or Chelsea.

  24. He exists shortly. What is he, 5' 7"?

  25. Look at it like this. Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho to name but two, had no name until they achieved success. Football is not an exact science. Mistakes have to be made and lessons learned, there's no specific formula for success.
I believe we have a good business model and a good manager. There's been some teething problems and there's still some issues that need addressed but I believe we're on the right track and changing the manager and starting again with some so called big name manager would be madness

  27. Jaimie's asleep at the button. Again. We should replace him with Desmond Hume.

  28. JK,
I think you are reaching in this article. We have no shot at Higuain because we won't pay up and he doesn't sound the least bit interested. Ditto for Reus, Hummels, schneiderlin and Hummer as the papers seem to indicate. I would just be thrilled with 2-3 real players added like Lacazette, Der Stegan and a good DM and sell the deadwood to fund as much of this as possible........Allen, Johnson, Enrique, Balo, Lambert, Jones etc.....

  29. Artur Detur the little magician haha

  30. Cause obviously Rodgers negotiates all the transfer fees himself

  31. B Rodgers needs to forget about Higuain(27) as until our club starts competing for the league regularly and regularly in champions league and getting to the knock out stages. The best world class strikers in world are out of our reach, so B Rodgers should target the top class players.

But he goes for the mediocre instead:

B Rodgers should offer A Villa £15-£18M for C Benteke(24), as a confident fully fit injury and suspension free C Benteke(24) would terrorise any defender in world football.

And he is upgrade on Lambert(32), he is mobile, has bit of pace and speed with him, he holds ball up well and is beast in the air, has good control, touch and is a very good finisher.

B Rodgers should bring ship out Lambert(32) to Crystal Palace for £3-£5M and replace him with C Benteke(24)

B Rodgers should also ship out F Borini(23) to Hull, QPR , Stoke Or Swansea for £8-£11M and replace him with L Adriano(27) Of S Donesk for £5-£7M Or L Vietto(21) Of Villareal for £10-£12M

  32. I think I was collateral damage

  33. Either Rodgers owns the transfers or he doesn't.

People need to make up their minds. Is it a transfer committee or is it Rodgers that is ultimately responsible for transfers?

One can't be a little pregnant.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sorry, but are you suggesting Rodgers is responsible for negotiating transfer fees!?!

    ReplyDelete
  35. No.

I am saying that I hold him accountable for transfers in general as he is the one who has continuously stated that he has final say over transfers.

My understanding is that Ayre negotiates the transfer fees.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So Ayre spent the money not Rodgers.
From the sounds of it, it's not a case of Rodgers or the committee being ultimately responsible, they are one and the same thing when it comes to transfers.

Rodgers might have the final yes or no, but we don't know how the committee works. From all Rodgers comments before, and since, signing Balo it looks very likely he had very little input into that signing
