I Want Anfield: 'Unbelievable' £20m striker desperate to sign for LFC this month. Saviour or rip-off?

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for 'unbelievable' West Brom star Saido Berahino, and despite Tony Pulis' efforts to convince him to stick with West Brom, it appears that the striker has his heart set on a move to Anfield.

Berahinho is reportedly Liverpool's top transfer target, and according to The Mirror today:

* Berahino is stalling on signing a new contract in the hope that Liverpool make a £20m move in January.

* Tottenham are also interested, but the striker 'prefers' a move to Anfield.

When asked this week about the possibility of selling the striker, West Brom Chief Terry Burton told reporters:

"If he [Tony Pulis] needs to sell somebody to do something else he will sell them"

When asked specifically whether £20m is enough to prise Berahino away, Burton dismissed the amount as a 'small amount of money', and added:

"He [Berahino] is worth what some club would pay for him. If a club want a player bad enough and they have the finances they try and do that."

Pulis clearly wants to keep Berahino, but in an interview with the BBC this weekend, he also conceded this that money talks. He told the BBC:

"Everyone is available in every shape and form [but] we've had no offers for Saido. He is scoring goals and has been a pleasure to work with"

Reading between the lines, the situation is clear: Berahino is for sale, and West Brom will sell for the right price. Is £20m a fair price, though? No chance, but grossly inflated transfer fees are par for the course when it comes to British players, and it's a massive risk (IMO) to spend £20m+ on a player with only one full season of Premier League experience.

That said, it's easy to see why Brendan Rodgers is interested. With his pace, power, and finishing ability, the manager probably sees sees Berahino as Daniel Sturridge mk2, and he's probably hoping that the youngster will come in and have a similar impact on the team.

Of course, the major difference is that Sturridge cost a comparative pittance; Liverpool will have to pay through the nose to land Berahino, and after spending so much money during the summer, it's debatable whether FSG will trust Rodgers with any more money.

Is Berahino a viable option for LFC?

  1. Pace and Power? It is quite obvious that you have never watched him! Quality Finishes are his hallmark but he is certainly not quick or strong.

  2. Where is the evidence that he wants a Liverpool move? The guy has an attitude, bad move by Liverpool?

  3. More like Andy Carroll mk 2.

  4. Berahino would be ok for around 12-14 million and maybe a few performance related add-ons.
However I would prefer Lacazette, even if it was 25 million. From what I've seen of him, he would give us the same pace, directness and finishing of Berahino but offer us more trickery and the unpredictability that we've lost since Suarez.
I know many say that Lyon won't sell Lacazette in January, but money talks as always. If we pursue hard enough we can get him I reckon

  5. You can immediately see the appeal factor in this. Come foreign superstars! Come to Liverpool where you can play with such players as Jordan Henderson, Lucas Leiva, Sakho and Berahino. Gerrard and Suarez? Oh no, got rid of those duds.

    ReplyDelete
  6. You are right Eric, we must start looking to bring in big-name stars but many fans say that they won't come. I disagree with that theory though, it just depends how we sell the club and project to them (and money obviously). Once you get the first superstar it's easier to sell the project to others........look at Man City with Robinho for instance.

We have enough squad depth now. The next few windows should be about bringing in 1 or 2 superstars each window. My first signing would be Lacazette, ok he's not a superstar yet but still would be a big signing like Suarez and Torres were i.e. on the cusp of greatness.

I know we need another keeper but another player I'd love us to go for is Khedira. Again if we pursue hard enough and really sell the club to him, why can't we get him. With his contract running down an 8-10 million offer may seem a lot but if we can secure him in January for that, we've got a world class midfielder for pittance. Yes he may be injury prone but we've got him cheap so worth the risk

  7. What about Jovetic? City are rumoured to be willing to let him go and I think he would a great addition to our team.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Dont want him -if rumours true = he turns up late on match days - has bad attitude and only playing as big fish in small pond - dont go near him - the young Jamaican that plays for Newcastle a much better bet

  9. the truth is that we have to sell before we can buy

  10. No thank you.

Borini just needs a good run of games. He has not played much so is a bit rusty but should be starting ahead of Balotelli and Lambert every time. Borini is not going to get you 20 goals a season but he offers decent pace, loads of work rate and mobility. I believe pairing Borini with Sterling or Sturridge could bring a fair amount of goals.

Markovic IMO should be converted into a striker. His pace causes non stop havoc and you can see he is eager to score goals too.

  11. No its not a good time to try fiddling about with Markovics game he has only just settled into a position he knows.
Also to play as a C.F type he would need to add a bit of strength and work on his finishing positioning etc.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Markovic is an attacking player, not a RB. He did also feature as a striker for Benfica. It is not like it will be alien to him.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It would his experience would be very limited at Benfica he played mostly wide hes just starting to play well why screw with that.
Also if pace made a striker then Suarez wouldnt have got picked and Ilori would be our striker.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It obviously won't happen overnight. He is playing where he is because of the formation. I doubt you would see Markovic anywhere near our defence if we were going with a back four.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Obviously he wouldn"t but at this point of time he is still a work in progress and he seems more comfortable running past players than around them.
It wont be long and Sturridge will be back and the offensive structure will change again no doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Apart from his volley his shooting is very weak.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Berahino signed a new contract LAST season. New improved contract details have been put on hold by the Club. So if you think you might get him for less than £20 you are dreaming. Berahino will probably go in the summer but who ever gets him will have to pay big money. Our Chairman will see to that!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Berahino is worth 10-12m just like Studge was & that's the inflated price after a year of scoring in the prem. Anymore & it's the january window 'effect' &/or LFC being held to ransom but regardless, we've already spent more than 100m to fill the squad with potential, now we need truly gifted & world-class players! Suarez left, Gerrard's going & Brendan isn't a 'big name' manager yet so it's gonna be even more difficult to attract those types of players to the club. I've been banging on about Cuadrado, Firmino, Shaqiri, Lacazette, Rakitic, & plenty of others for too long & Brendan Rodgers himself stated a long time ago that we need a marquee signing but all we sign is players with potential! I can see the sense in most of our signings, even if i don't agree with all the fees paid but ONLY if we went on to sign a world-class forward player. Without that signing, our clubs stated goals for the season don't quite match up to our strategy to achieving them. Losing suarez & knowing Gerrard was well into his twilight should have made the world class player our top priority even if we had to pay over the odds a bit. Now the world class players will go elsewhere & we'll struggle to get star players like i mentioned as well... unless we act NOW & buy in this January window! Shaqiri would have been perfect cos he's one of the few top class, left-footed, FWD's but Lacazette & Firmino would do nicely as they'd give us our cutting edge back instantly by adding 30-50 goals between them

    ReplyDelete
  19. According to BBC City interested in Lacazette - us Arse or City mmmm let's see? Aguero Bony Lacazette wow lucky for some

    ReplyDelete
  20. Benteke will probably be a better signing

    ReplyDelete
  21. Only one problem
    very injury prone

    ReplyDelete
  22. Berahino has 2.5 years left on his current contract

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nonsense. He is quick, his movement is excellent and he's strong enough to regularly score goals in the prem. Think you may have the wrong player

    ReplyDelete
  24. Not quick, mobile or energetic enough. Origi would be better.

    ReplyDelete
  25. No one wants to hear this. They prefer putting together unrealistic shopping lists.

    ReplyDelete
  26. COZ suarez en balo are saints? even sturridge was known to have an attitude problem before arriving to liverpool, i like bera, him linking up with his country men will help

    ReplyDelete
  27. dat amateur team was his old club

    ReplyDelete
  28. Big name foreign superstars is so 20th century. Who are the foreign superstars now? What superstars are there in football at this point anyway? I can think of two... It's not like the 90s when there were stars everywhere. It's more of a team game now, players are more interchangeable, and more alike from country to country.

I couldn't care less about big names or galacticos. That's alright for Madrid. If I wanted that, I'd support them. But, as the song goes, we are Liverpool. If we play the superstar game we will come in long behind Barcelona, Chelsea, Madrid, PSG, Juventus, because they have more money, more glamour, more magic fairy dust, more bullshit, all that. But we can beat them, historically we *have* beaten them, playing *the other* way, the way Dortmund have to play it, the way Atletico Madrid have to play it, the way Ajax have to play it, the hard way, building up our own people. If a player doesn't want to come and play with us because Jordan Henderson plays in our midfield, rather than Jordi von Henderkamp or Jordiniho or Hendo Jordovic, then bollocks to them, they can stay put, they're not made of the right stuff for Liverpool.

    Um. Hi everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good effort. See if you can get the names right next time, and your opinion might have a chance of not being laughed at.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I did not realise he had bought many of these players.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sahin was crocked, his attitude was terrible, and he couldn't adapt his game. Not up to it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You'd be much more at home following Real Maadrid mate, I want LFC to sign players that are a good fit and hungry. Galacticos never will wet the appetite of the majority of LIverpool fans, hard working good footballers will.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't understand, what are you implying? I never mentioned Berahino's contract, I did say Khedira's contract is running down

    ReplyDelete
  34. If it's true then I think the kid is reading too many papers - Liverpool don't seem genuinely interested. If they were they would have already made an enquiry. I'd say he's low on a list of possible players. Rodgers said quite specifically that the club needs ready-made players, no more young projects.

    ReplyDelete
  35. When a black athlete displays confidence they are always described as having an
attitude problem Berahino, Sturridge, Wright, Cole,Henry, Balotelli,Hamilton, Serena etc etc

  36. Gerrard was a nobody once untill he made his name just like markovich is moreno is lallana is sahko is can is, all young players signed by brendan rodgers who are starting to make a name for them selves and gona grow into world class players and some of the above could become legends just like gerrard. So get off the back of our manager get off the back of our team and start supporting them because this team is young they are growing together and will soon be top quality the futer is bright. Also berahinio is some tallent and upfront with studge my word would that be a good partnership!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes thats it go ferk themselves what we need is grafters was suares a ponce or a grafter? A grafter and thats why he was and is one of the best on planet earth same with gerrard same as rush same as barns same as fowler same as dalgleish same as keegan same as hughes same as fairclough the list is endless but one thing they had was work ethic for the team. As one great once said no one man is bigger than lfc. But thhey can become greats if they play the liverpool way!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah he's strong alright. He's grown a lot in the last couple of years too, and his body shape's changed considerably. He looks a bit less balanced to me, now, and runs with the ball with less assurance, but he's gained power for sure.

It's no disadvantage to have a powerful upper body. What really stands out is the end product though. He has a range of nice finishes, with timing, accuracy, and variety.

But then, when he's running through with a man to beat, or receiving possession in a creative position, he doesn't offer much. He sometimes takes time sorting his feet out though, and looks a bit laboured and uncoordinated when he's doing it. He goes for long periods without scoring, and has never scored consistently against the big teams.

In short there's too much downside, for me, for £20m, though he may yet go on to prove me wrong. He certainly has something a little different, and I like him, but I'm just worried about whether he's really got the ability to develop the necessary class.

  39. It is possible that we may sell Borini for 10-14 million.
There is also a possibility that Assaidi will go to UAE for 4.5 million.
If Palace firm up their rumoured interest in Lambert for 4 million.
    That's 18.5 to 22.5 million we'll bring in.

Now I know there are agent fees and signing on fees etc but surely up to 25 million on Lacazette and up to 10 million on Khedira is plausible.

Obviously it's all 'ifs and buts' of whether we do sell all them or if we can convince those players to come but there is no need to just shoot down people's "shopping lists" as unrealistic. It's MY opinion that the above are realistic with a bit of desire and ambition from the owners (not going to get into that debate though)

  40. People can talk about signing World Class Players all they want but the reality of it is we are not in the situation to attract these kind if players.

We have won very little of note in the last few years, we have a poor record in being the CL, we do not pay the massive amount of wages like Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea as well as a host of other top European Clubs and we have a manager though no fault of his own as this is the first major club he has managed who has won nothing that would attract the so called World Class Players.

I honestly believe we do not need to sign the so called elite players. I have very little issue with most of the players BR has signed but I do take issue with the way he has utilised them and those players who for what ever reason he hadn't signed, those players like Song and Bojan.

I will give BR credit for finally realising the the formation he was playing wasn't working and changed it.

Our current form is getting better, sure we are not winning games by large margins and our general play isn't great but we are starting to win which gives me a measure of encouragement

  41. Yes so lets get rid of the dead wood sell boreni lambert and buy berahinio id also seriously think about selling lucas and getting a world class holding midfielder or let can play that possition as he is awsome there invest money fromlucas in a keeper sell brad jonesuse sterling upfront more so we can rotate strikers and bring ibe back from loan at derby. Id like to see rossiter get some game time and ojo and the promotion of phillips to the first team just as a sub for now is a must as he is the steven gerrard replacement this boy is awsome mark my words he is top draw player i d also like more of the youth players given a chance at our club as a lot of them deserve a shot in the first team we are on the verge of something special with some of those boys!!!

  45. I am not saying no signings at all just that some I see on here are totally unrealistic IMO given FFP and what we are likely to raise in sales.
Your suggestions are optimistic IMO but feasible.
I don't think we'll get anything like £10M for Boriini but hopefully I am wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Certainly has potential. Good movement and pace. Prob deceptive strength like sterling. He's scored 9 prem goals (say match of the day) in a struggling team. The amount of chances we create should mean he would score more goals , so it could be good. He has to have the work rate though to close down high up the pitch like we did against Sunderland yesterday. Wouldn't be my preferred choice, but if he came of course I'd support him and the team if he contributes.

  48. I grt the feeling borini is gona sit tight and run his contract down!!!!! But i personaly think even if we paid 20 mill for berahino it would still be worth it as he is a quality young gifted player who we could make money on in years to come but the team really does crave a leader a world class player to show the youth the way forward, may be a roy kean like figure or a veira someone who will bollock the player who doesnt perform and kick opposition in the air someone who places fear in his own team if they have a bad game and fear to opponents who come up against us at the min our teams a bit to nicey nice!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I watch him play EVERY WEEK. He is a great goal scorer but is not strong or quick.

  50. Just seen a stat I thought I should share as it's interesting. I know stats aren't usually something to hang your hat on, but:
    Squawka football
No player aged 21 or under across Europe's top 5 leagues has more league goals than Saido Berahino this season (9).

    ReplyDelete
  51. Team I'm such a fool for wanting my team to sign exciting players and win trophies....lest you forget, we WERE the Real Madrid of the 70s and 80s. Some of us remember those days and would like to see them again.

    ReplyDelete
  52. So you enjoy dropping points against Hull, Palace and Leicester more than you would being unbeaten 22 games in à row do you?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't think anyone should pay £10 million for Borini too (including when we signed him). However we did accept Sunderland's £14 million offer in the summer, so some are willing to pay that much.

Cech for goalkeeper would be great and would keep us good for the next 5 years or so. Problem is whether Chelsea will sell in January. Perin or Ter Stegen are other good options but again can we get them, Perin more likely of the two. If we can't improve on Mignolet, we might have to wait till the summer.

Lacazette would be my main target

    ReplyDelete
  54. Gerrard said he wanted to stay didn't he? So the club chose to let him leave.

    ReplyDelete
  55. And you think Messi, Ronaldo, Robben dont work hard? Strootman? Courtois? The difference is that whereas guys like Allen and Lucas may work hard they are far behind in talent. And iT must be because they are so tough that they are injured all the time

    ReplyDelete
  56. Danny Sturridges Physio1:28 pm, January 11, 2015

liverpool are not interested in this over priced average player, so STOP spreading pointless rumours

    ReplyDelete
  57. I don't think it's a choice between buying in famous players and losing to Palace. Teams full of famous players drop points too. Ok so ultimately what I'd prefer is for Liverpool to keep its identity, and to find
success doing things the right way without mortgaging the club's future
on empty dreams and promises, or selling out its glory to gratify the arrogance of some oil billionaire or another.

Of course I like it when players with reputations come to the club, like
Litmanen, like Torres, and so on, and I recognise that it can inspire the
team. But it's not the main pleasure I take in football. These days, to be honest, what I most enjoy is seeing talented players learning and developing their games, taking on and learning to compete with the very best.

Since the trophies can just be bought by the right kind of money, they've become worthless in my eyes, really. So what if Chelsea or Man City win the league. I don't care. I don't admire them, particularly, except at an abstract, technical level. They aren't real achievements. I'm not that interested in winning for its own sake at this point in my life. I want Liverpool to win, yeah, but not at any cost -- that's just me of course. I recognise it's not the way a lot of fans feel. But you asked the question :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Apparently Assaidi has been sold for 4.7 million pounds yay!!!!

    ReplyDelete

  66. Dubai based team. Echo says it should go through within the next fourty eight hours.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I don't get why this is so hard to understand given our previous transfer failings. We already have Sturridge, Origi and Lambert. I'm not even counting Balotelli. So we should only add a proper, proven, fit striker that will improve what we've got and who can both play with Sturridge or lead the line by himself. Martinez, Cavani or Lacazatte. It'll be expensive yes, but either we buy a match winner and pay market price, or don't bother.

I know we don't have deep pockets like others but we already have plenty "for the future" here. It's just one player who we can finance by selling off others..

  72. What on earth has being black got anything to do with it? The same can be said about Cantona, Savage, Souness, Ruddock, Jones, etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  73. Why did Sakho have black arm band?

    ReplyDelete
  74. He needed games to build up his fitness and acclimatise to the EPL. To judge a player after 12 games is harsh. 3 goals in 12 games is not bad for a defensive midfielder - compare that with our other midfielders.

A bad attitude (if this truly was a problem) is not acceptable, but the manager needs to address this positively. Apparently he was not happy being played out of position. How was this not discovered before the loan agreement was signed? It seems to be that Liverpool has plenty of room for average players with no attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I have stated before that BR style of play is suited to attack and score goals not to defend as his statistics consistently show his teams concede 1.25 goals per game on average.

This means for his teams to be successful they will have to score 2 goals per game on average otherwise success will be very hard to come by.

The team last year did this. We conceded 50 goals in the prem (1.25 per game) but the team scored 101 goals (over the 2 goals per game average) so we arguably were successful.

when we compare the stats for this season the goals against remain at BR usual rate of 1.25 conceded but the goals scored are not above the target of 2 goals hence the reason why we are not successful.

    If we are to challenge for 4th spot this situation needs to be addressed and their is two viable options;

    1 BR gets the team scoring above the rate of 2 goals per game and maintains the 1.25 goals conceded figure or;

    2. BR Reduces the amount his teams concede to below 0.75 each game this means the team only have to score 1 goal to now be successful.

if you look at some of the top managers around like Ancelotti, Mourinho, Guardiola, Benitez, Van Gaal etc. their goal conceded per game played averages around 0.75 or lower and their goals scored is over the 1 per goal per game. so their is no wonder they have been successful.

Now if you take Guardiolas stats; he has maintained a conceded rate of 0.75 but provided a goals scored rate of 2 goals plus. the result is that he has a win ration of 70%

In conclusion, BR needs to get the team scoring and this means quality strikers as history tells you he cant defend!

  76. Why should any of those players you mentioned come to Liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  77. Because we have the great Glen Johnson and the Welsh Xavi as well.

  78. It's got everything to do with it, I found it very bizarre for Danny Murphy to list all his of field activities last night, very negative portrayal on a prime time channel for a young kid still trying to deal with all the fruits when you become the main man at your club, and that is going to stick with him for a while now.
I don't see players like Jack Wilshere or Rooney getting their incidents reported in MOTD....just saying.

  82. From the little I've seen, he doesn't look quick, but has good acceleration. I think him training with Sturridge would help develop his game a fair bit.

    ReplyDelete
  83. You just listed a bunch of "hardmen" players known for the on field persona's. If you watch the crazy gang documentary you see that the most of the Wimbledon players didn't like the press they got as it filtered the positive aspects of their game.It was only Jones and Fashanu that over-hyped the coverage so it no wonder that both of them ended up in the entertainment world

Berahino is a kid with great talent trying to figure it out in the spotlight just like Sterling. So he doesn't need pundits like Murphy projecting hearsay on a prime time football channel as it creates a stigma.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Lambert is quite a bad player
    he cant run at all

  85. Or more apposite point is he is Parisian.

    ReplyDelete
  87. so you're meant to be the guy funnier then Bob and Vermhat?

    ReplyDelete
  88. No the other one

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yes, he is a viable option. We got Sturridge because Chelski already knew he was frail and we had Suarez and had no desperation for a striker. Lambert is too slow, Borini is too hyper to rely on, Balotelli is (nicely speaking) unmotivated. Sterling is a very talented winger but clearly not arrogant enough to be the marquee striker we are forcing him to be. In short, we have NO reliable striker today. Our goal production seems haphazard at best and just plain lucky sometimes. Origi is going to take the better part of the rest of the season to gel. We need somebody with PL experience: speed, physicality, crowd pressure, crap game-time weather. In my opinion Berahinho has all this and the arrogance to will the ball into the net and appears available. Now that Bony appears headed elsewhere to a team that needs, but less than us, a striker, I don't know why we are waiting or worried about the money. Sell Balotelli, Assaidi, Suso and whoever else needs to go, but cripes just get a striker already.

  95. Peter well done mate! I've seen the rumours & I'm hoping for this. He's a beast who can win games on his own. He can do everything Berahino can do then add real power & hold up play.
