'It's down to money': BR determined to sign £15m 'warrior' who's desperate for LFC move

Prior to signing Dejan Lovren, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move or West Ham defender Winston Reid, and new reports this week suggest that the talented defender is back in the frame at Anfield.

According to The Mirror today:

* Liverpool are 'pushing' to sign Reid, who is 'keen' on a move to a big club.

* LFC will have to pay Reid £80k a week to secure the transfer.

* Reid also allegedly wants a £1m signing-on fee.

This follows a Daily Express report in October, which claimed that:

* Reid is 'confident' of joining Liverpool, and allegedly has his 'heart set' on the move.
* He has rejected offers from Arsenal and Man United because he wants to join LFC.
* West Ham are willing to sell for £15m.

Some info about Reid:

* Current contract expires in 2015.
* Captain of the New Zealand national team.
* Won West Ham's 'Player of the Year' award in 2013.
* 119 appearances for West Ham.
* Averages 28 appearances per season.
* 7 goals 5 assists.

When asked recently about Reid's future, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce confirmed that the club is in 'ongoing negotiations' with the New Zealander over a new contract, but also conceded that he could leave:

"I think at the moment he [Reid] is very comfortable here, but like everything else it's probably down to the money. When negotiations are exhausted then we'll know if he's decided to stay or hasn't."

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp rates Reid, and at the end of last season, he named the defender as one of his players of the season. He told the Daily Mail:

"Winston Reid...has been excellent alongside James Collins. Reid is a warrior defender who can look ungainly but rarely makes mistakes"

'Ungainly'? Thanks but no thanks. Liverpool already have an ungainly central defender in Mamadou Sakho, and one is more than enough.

In any event, in my view, Reid is not the answer in any way, shape, or form. He is a solid Premier League defender, but he doesn't have the European experience required to dominate at Anfield.

There's also the added risk of small-club mentality syndrome, which has already affected Lallana, Lambert, and (arguably) Lovren this season.

If Rodgers is to spend big-bucks on another central defender, it should (IMO) go on a proven, world-class player, with international/European experience, and the requisite big-club mentality.

As always, my first choice is Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels, who is reportedly available for £32m.

Granted, £32m is a huge amount of money to spend on a central defender, but Hummels is a proven, world class defender, and you get what you pay for.

To offset the fee, Liverpool could sell Sakho and Ilori, which could conceivably bring in £15-£20m, though to be honest, that's probably a little optimistic.

Of course, there are no guarantees that Hummels will succeed where Sakho and Lovren failed, but the German is arguably better equipped than Reid to make a positive impact on LFC's defence. Additionally, with Dortmund's season in the toilet, Liverpool have a great opportunity to try and tempt him away from Germany.

The return of Kolo Toure to the defence has (temporarily) helped stop the rot, but the Ivorian is not a long-term solution, and Rodgers will need to address the issue sooner rather than later.

  1. Is this yet another "determined to sign" wonder that Rodgers is after. Another to add to Lallana and Allen et al who he thought were world beaters? More second rate benchers I think.

  5. i honestly dont know why rodgers bothers fiddling around with the defence all the time instead of just buying world class players and then filling out the positions which needed to be filled after. right now our defence of Kolo Toure, skrtel, moreno and johnson would look so much better if there were world class players ahead of them to put the game to bed. Markovic(horrid signing), Lovren(the worst), Lambert, Balotelli, and Lallana(not so much, but still) all make me so upset. we never needed none of those players. what we needed to do was to buy Arturo Vidal from Juventus for £45M. world class player who will dominate our midfield and contribute goals and assists, along with being an accomplished DM. then buy Hulk to replace Suarez flair. we couldnt get Sanchez so Hulk would be a fantastic option. playing in Russia is boring despite his fantastic statistics but if he came to Anfield he will light it up with his skill and thunderous shot. plus what we need is Strength as our team gets bullied(Bolasie - Lovren = shocking). £35M for Hulk. Christian Benteke. definately one of the best and most feared strikers in the PL and its shocking that BR would sign Balotelli and Lambert over Benteke or Bony, shocking really. Benteke has potential to be the outright best striker in the world if he joins a big club like LFC for £25M. he'd get double the goals he got at Villa. His strength, pace, power, movement and thunderous shot is too crucial to leading the line. Benteke is like Aguero and the other South Americans in that he has no fear. not like Balotelli and Markovic, Markovic is the biggest coward in world football. the amount of oppurtunites hes missed because he too scared to shoot is ridiculous. and final signing Nathaniel Clyne. in the summer, you could have picked any Southampton player you wanted and he was the one we needed. top man. and intelligent. we didnt need Lallana, Lambert or Lovren. we needed Clyne tho after what Bolasie did to Johnson last season. £15M. final signing. total: £120M

very simple. with World class players like Vidal, Benteke(soon to be) and Hulk you can bring through young players like Ibe, Suso, Coutinho, Wilson and Sinclair and see there full potential. imagine Ibe or Suso or Wilson recieving service from Vidal or Hulk. they'll be massively confident like with Sterling and Suarez. Vidal will be our Suarez but from midfield. hes showed in the CL and World Cup hes a animal. his work rate is a cut above the rest. in his position he is world class.

  7. One million! Big bucks? Nothing but a pre contract will happen in jan if anything at all.

  8. Hummels would be nice, but I can't see him choosing LFC over bigger, more successful (in recent times) clubs who would be sure to be interested if he becomes available.
On Winston Ried I agree 100% with you.

In my opinion I don't think a change of players at the back will make any huge difference to the way we defend as a team until the obvious defensive coaching/training has been improved upon.

When you look at the players we have for CB, none of them are poor players, they are just playing in a poor defensive unit. When the team performs badly defensively then the CB's end up exposed more and so individual errors occur more often and are easier to single out for the "this is why we're so bad" criticism.

Defensively Stable is not a phrase you could level at any of BR's teams. I'd personally like to see someone brought in to the club to address this before we start thinking about spending another 20 or 30 million in defence.

  9. markovic has failed. infact along with him and Lovren there the worst. he has failed in that if LFC dont make CL football this year him along with the other signings are to blame and like Kenny, BR should be sacked. Kenny was sacked for his signings and so should Rodgers. Benteke £25M, Vidal £45M Hulk £30M and Clyne for £20M. total: £125M

    --------------------------------Mingolet
    Clyne-----------Skrtel---------------Toure-----------Moreno
    ---------------------Lucas-----------Vidal

    and if Sturridge fit

    ---------------------------Mingolet
    Clyne-----------Skrtel--------------Toure----------Moreno
    -Hulk----------Gerrard------------Vidal-----------Sterling
    ------------------Sturridge-----------Benteke

we need players who can come in with instant results. Hulk will bring 20-25 goals/10 assists a season. vidal will bring 10-20 goals/25 assists a season. Benteke will score 25 goals-40 a season(hes too good) and Clyne is the main man in the best defensive partnership in Europe. intelligent full back, with pace and power.

  10. Yeah a good defensive coach would make the world of difference. On paper our defenders match up to just about any team in the league.

It would also help if our forwards and midfielders kept the ball better :-)

  11. Oh I'm fed up with Reid, and all these PL overrated mercenaries.
    you want a defender,
why not go for Schär? BR take a note tonight of this guy,
I bet he is cheaper, has better quality and attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm also a big fan of Hummels but I find it surprising that he's your choice Jaimie, as you are a regular critic of signing perennially injured players

    ReplyDelete
  13. How long has Reid got left on his contract?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Current contract expires at 2015,
Something tells me 'Wet Ham Player of the Year' is unsettled.

  15. Runs out in the summer

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks. No way they'll be getting 15 million for him then

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would disagree. Yes the players have failed but ask the question why they have failed. Lovren, Sakho were great at their previous teams and Sakho is doing well in the French team, in fact even Agger is doing well now he has left. Personally this all falls back on BR, he is obviously not doing something right, decent players do not become rubbish overnight as for Marcovic I don't know enough about the guy but you cannot say he has failed yet. He has come into a team with issues and come into a league he is not used to like most of the signings and it takes time to settle in. After another 10 full games we can probably judge if he is going to make it or not, (don't forget Lucas when he first came here)

benteke is a one season wonder and injury prone
hulk was woeful in the world cup and is a mercenary
vidal as well is injury prone

    try again
    bony>benteke

  19. Eventually you have to be happy with what you've got this running around buying expensive defenders has gotta stop.
The time has come to try and get the best out of what you have because what we have ability wise defensively speaking is plenty.
Reid would be yet another defender on big money on the scrap heap.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Maybe we could sweeten the pot by offering to pick up Jonas Hummels if Mats were to sign. It is apparently a dream of theirs to play for the same side. Either one looks good to me. Reid looks the part, but Hummels is a known quantity...a good known quantity.

  21. Liverpool's XI: Mignolet, Johnson, Enrique, Lovren, Skrtel, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, Gerrard, Sterling, Lambert.

Substitutes: Jones, Sakho, Moreno, Can, Lallana, Coutinho, Markovic.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Our bench looks much more exciting than our starting eleven.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Precisely. Of course, Kolo and Borini are not there. We need to win the game and we leave our best attackers on the bench. If Gerrard does not bail us out, we are gone. Skrtel and Lovren together makes me shiver.

  24. Kolo been a rock at the back and gets dropped. The norm under Rodgers when players do well.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Clyne is an overpriced englishman

After worldcup Hulk looks like a no no

    Benteke is very injury prone

Vidal was looking very likely to sign for Man , no point in making a request

Markovic is a very good player, who is being apprehended by the fact that he doesn't get enough time and doesn't play striker which I believe he should

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks for the realism there Nss Ssn, Clyne is a great player, but not at the price quoted. Hulk has been average since before the world cup, but if his price were lower, would probably be worth a punt (although we arent really in the position to gamble on signings), Benteke is injured way too much to be our 'other' striker, we'll just end up in the same position, plus he is used to having Weimann and Bongers running to his flanks and we just dont seem to be doing that. Vidal isnt what we need right now, especially not for that price. Let's not forget that we don't have a Suarez to sell in this window, so our warchest will be smaller.
Marko is a very gifted footballer, he needs time to settle in. He was the only one that looked interesting against Basel, up to and including the red card!

    ReplyDelete
  42. More money for somebody nobody! I'm really tired... Our team need 3 top players, not wannabes. And a top manager too, not a wannabe...

    ReplyDelete
  43. I've asked this before JK but got no reply: are you not concerned by Hummels fitness record? Do you really think moving to a more physical league, with no winter break and more games will do anything other than exacerbate this?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Why would Liverpool give ‪‎Brendan Rodgers‬ any more money to waste?

His defensive buys have struggled. We shipped in 50+ goals last season and are doing our best to beat that total this season.

    Opposition forwards are Lovren us.
We are the Red Sea, and every attacker is named 'Moses'.

Rodgers' midfield buys have... succeeded. Joe Allen is neither scorer nor creator. He doesn't even carry the water, not that he needs to since we're all at sea most of the time anyway.
Meanwhile, "Lallana" is the sound Adam makes while sitting on the bench.

Up front we're a Lambert to the slaughter.
Borini? He's gone off to join hacktivists Anonymous.

And Balotelli? It's Stupor Mario, thank you.

Nope, no spending spree for Mr Rodgers in January. He's thrown enough haymakers and missed every one.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I just have a feeling we are going to BANG our heads about these "unknown young players" with "potential" for a very long time to come! I feel desperate when i think about Liverpool buying a whole lot of "possibles" for the foreseeable future, world class and PROVEN are unfortunately not traits the transfer team at LFC are interested in!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Your days a european club are over! LFC no longer a top 4 english team....you over rate yourselves and thats just the start.... you seem to think you have some devine right and that is also a problem..... been living on past glories which count for nought these days...why would anyone really want go there at the moment....your only reputation at the moment is as a career killer for players....wake and smell the coffee.

  48. Hummels has been injured a fair bit recently, 32m is a risk. In the 2014 calendar year he's missed 35 games. He's very good but is it worth it, I'm not convinced.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Reading posts like this is why I've lost all respect for LFC it stinks of arrogance talking of recent signings of having small club mentality syndrome well LFC can't really be regarded as a big club in recent years can they Regarding hummells and the assumption that he would join LFC because Dortmund's season is down the toilet as you put it I noticed this morning that they are still in the champions league
