'He'd fit in, but...': Man Utd flop explains why £31m LFC star is 'not ready' to sign for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are the latest big-name club to be linked with a summer move for Liverpool star Raheem Sterling, but former Bayern midfielder Owen Hargreaves has warned Sterling that he is not yet ready to play for the European giants.

Last week the Daily Mail reported:

* Bayern Munich are keeping 'close tabs' on Liverpool Sterling.

* Marco Reus is Bayern's first choice forward target, but Sterling is 'one of the alternatives' if the move for Reus fails.

Reacting to the news, Hargreaves urged Sterling to 'stay at Liverpool for another four years', and insisted that he is 'far too young mentally to make that move'. He added:

"There is no better place in the world for a player like Sterling to be. He would fit in, and it would benefit him to play in such a team, but he should stay at Anfield a bit longer"

Hargreaves is clearly right here. It's madness for Sterling to even consider a move to a club like Bayern (or Real Madrid), and in my view, money is the only reason he'd consider a transfer at such a young age.

If £31m-rated Sterling goes to Bayern, he'll be a bench-warmer, just like Xherdan Shaqiri, another attacking player who made the ill-advised decision to jump-ship at an early age.

Shaqiri is in his third year at the Allianz arena, and he's nowhere near becoming a regular first-teamer. He currently averages a measly 30 minutes of pitch time per game, and he rarely starts for the Bundesliga champions.

If Sterling is stupid enough to leave Liverpool at the age of 20, that is his future.

  1. If Sterling goes to one these clubs he is as stuffed as the turkey that is only hours from my lips.

  2. really like Sterling but like Coutinho he must work on his finishing like CR7 did. we need Benteke, Vidal and Clyne for a combined £100M. Vidal £45M, Clyne £20M, £30M for Benteke

  3. Sterling agent doing his Job getting him much as he can . Sterling Lallana Coutinho are the only players we have for Future .
I agree with Michael owe aswell we need Pogba first before anyone as Gerrard long term replacement .
We should Buy Reus injured and Isco as our main three signing at any cost .
Also Benteke Clyne Montoya Hummels Cabaye
Sell Mingolet and Jones Sakho lovren Borini Allen lucas alberto assadi balottelli Flanagan None are players of future or that can take Liverpool in any direction forward.
And if I was FSG wouldn't give Rodgers one cent.

  4. Hargreaves is spot on. Brendan Rodgers stating Mario Ballotelli does not suit Liverpools style of play, sounds like to me that he is a comitee signing that Rodgers didnt realy want.

  5. Yeah...I think that Rodgers very begrudgingly ticked his name of approval when they signed him.

  6. Just for future reference to your headlines, a flop is Borini, Assaidi, Sahin, Sakho, Mignolet, Aspas, Luis Alberto, Lambert, Lovren, Balotelli, Josemi, Nunez, Morientes, Kromkamp, Babel and Pennant. A flop is not someone who helped his team win the Premiership title and the Champions League, but then suffered bad injuries which ended his career.

  7. Hargreaves is a crap merchant who only lasted at manure because he'd he's head so far up fergie's ass that when old purple nose farted Hargreaves burped. No one cares what that muppet has to say.

  8. I liked Hargreaves as a player. Felt he was underrated and unlucky due to injuries.

  9. By the way, for those old enough to remember the late great Laurie Cunningham, Sterling reminds me so much of him. The Jaimacan connection, breaking into England & being coveted by top European clubs. Unfortunately for Laurie injuries & age caught up with him & he was a lost soul who met an untimely end in a car accident. Sterling should take heed moving to Europe can be a double edged sword. On that note enjoy the festivities & time with the family.

  10. its neither the problem is steven gerrard!!! Lovren last year had Schneiderlin at southampton and Sakho has him at France.... now we are changing formations just to cater for gerrard... since lucas has come in we look more balanced but we need to drop gerrard for Emre Can.... no matter what defender we buy the problem will remain as lond as gerrard is in the starting 11....

  17. Sign Lacazette or bring back Origi

    ReplyDelete
  18. The scuff Lovren did against Man U that assisted Van Ps third goal told me that he's very much out of his depth. I've seen him try that nightmare approach before. Sakho all day for me.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That is what i thought but does he have that pace to get in behind i dont think so

    ReplyDelete
  20. Give me another explanation
why does Sahin,Can,Sakho ,Assaidi and Toure all been neglected?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I liked his press interview before Arse game- the one where he said bugger all and looked like he was about to nut one of the press guys.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sakho>All our Cb's

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah. It's good every now and then, just not for long term. Makes the club look like shit, just like they looked amidst the Suarez racism nonsense.

  24. Maybe you should say since Lucas came back as DM we've played better or Since Sevie G not play as a DM we haven't lost ?

  25. BR has man up and say he made a mistake- team selection and formation - FSG should limit funds - buy strikers- Alexander Lazzarate_Lyon - or loan attacking players - sell Balloteli, Borini, Aspas,, Assadi, Enrique, Coates, Johnson- give youth -ibe , oje, suso, wisdom, Jerome Sinclair a chance

    ReplyDelete
  26. BR- needs pace and high pressing game - like MU game- he didn't give Jerome a chance - shitty defense- buy Ilori, Sakho, Moreno, Lovren for a trophy case?? Agger sold does not make sense- now he says Ballo' doesn't fit? really man up man - he was wrong choice

    ReplyDelete
  27. I maintain that Sterling is nowhere ready for the big leagues. He has minimal CL experience, has only had two half seasons and this is his first full season. Going to a club like Bayern will ruin him. His stats are not that great and we all know about his finishing. A few more years at the forefront and then he will be ready. BTW, Jaimie, when will you be posting my article?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe one day you see Messi play as a defender ;) ?
No one is perfect ..if you are an attacking minded player your weak side must be defensive .. similar to managers and coaches .. the only thing that can make them stronger is they work together as a team ;) sadly atm BR don like to work with others def coaches .. he like attack ..
If i am honest ...i actually enjoyed more by watching attacking football.. if our strikers can score more than our defenders concede i am sure we will always happy to watch and support .. we all want the team to win every games ..but in reality that's not the case ..

    ReplyDelete
  29. BR - learn from mistakes & please don't have a ego - when you are just learning - go with you instincts - play the youth - buying is not solution - Emre Can , Lucas can preform when you have strikers, midfield are pressing- some games need bold decisions players need to be dropped - so drop them - no player or manager is bigger than the Liverpool FC remember that - despite a player or manager success - everyone deserves a time out

    ReplyDelete
  30. BR(Brendan Rodgers) - I would like to see - Lyon Striker playing for pool- I would like to see - youth given a chance - and buy a keeper - Simon is a good goalie - but he is not Reina or Ray Clemence - bid your time scouting - I see good players in shakthar Donest - worth a bid? Danny Inngs or Charlie Austin -4-5Mill pounds worth the bid low risk high return-

    ReplyDelete
  31. Keep digging - now it's Ivory Coast and Morocco's turn

    ReplyDelete
  32. Brendan Rodgers - for boxing days game its imperative that you ask players to press from the minute go- Burnley are no pushovers - attack -retain-press-defend-attack-increase tempo oh yes - please get Couthino, Lucas, Hendo, Sterling other boys shooting lessons from either Gerrad or Balloteli - they need the extra training - get a defensive coach - either Mr Carragher or Sami Hypia - its clearly needed.
Sakho - Skertel, Toure need to be aggressive & continuously communicating - Moreno & Lovren cost us goals -- I believe they will come good provided they are given time out and concentration level picks up- leader in pitch is needed defensively & attackingly

    ReplyDelete
  33. Reina - was always talking - shouting and alert - so Simon or Brad should take the lead for once and get the line organized -

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wishing Liverpool FC , Its Wonderful Fans Worldwide & FSG a Blessed Christmas filled with happiness , joy, excitement and glory on the pitch and a winning mentality - you need to prove that you are Liverpool FC - rise and be victorious -

  35. If Rodgers sells Sahko, that will be it as far as I'm concerned. Fucking sack his ass. Never ever have I called for a bosses head, but if Sahko is sold before Lovren, he should be axed himself. It shows his judgement is so poor he. I hope he proves me wrong for the good of the club. Merry Christmas LFC Fans. YNWA

  36. There is no maybe about that. But Suarez leaving wasnt the problem, that had to be done and he wanted to go anyway. Players come and go but the main problem is that we didn't replace like for like. I'm all in favour of buying them young and allowing players to move through the ranks but when you lose a world class player, you play a world class player. People also pretend that because Alexis Sánchez wouldnt come, there were no alternatives but there were. Look at Real and Barca. Sure they have some really expensive players on big contracts but they also give opportunities to guys like Jesé and Bartra. That's the way to go imo.

So how long and how many times does a player have to prove his worth before he is allowed to start talking about moving if not given a regular start?
I'm surprised Lucas hasn't left already he is the only DM in our side and does a great job considering and he still can't keep his place, BR for me likes his British footballers because that's as far as his talent stretches.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Why? Because something is not working, so he is trying to get a formula that works. If he stuck to a back 4 that clearly wasn't working, he would get stick over it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It wasn't about not putting up the cash for Konoplyanka, we had the cash and the owner of the selling club for some unknown reason pulled out, even though we matched his asking price.

    ReplyDelete
  45. He didn't run away he left in anger because he could see how sh!t the others were and him being dropped for them is a joke.

  46. Back at you Johnny and to everyone else. God bless us everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  47. He is but that doesn't suite the discussion. Apparently he has to play LCB. Well according to Jaimie. I would like to see him centre of a three. He would go out to meet danger more than Skrtel does. Not as good in the air though.

    ReplyDelete
  48. merry xmas to you all and a happy new year!

    ReplyDelete
  49. some home truths here..... we have the worst number 1 goal keeper and even worse number 2..... we have the worst deep playing playermaker... the worst number 9 yet lets all jump on the band wagon and blame Balotelli when he has said i play better with 2 strikers.... rodgers has alieneted reina, kuyt, agger, luis alberto, aspas, lucas, sakho, and all this too cater for gerrard..... i am a die hard liverpool fan and trust me gerrard is ruining the balance of our team.... henderson allen coutinho play better without him so does lucas........

    ReplyDelete
  50. Of course there is. The deification of guys like Suarez, Messi and Ronaldo is too much. There arent three or four players on the planet who are miles ahead of everyone else. The proof is in the pudding. When we sold Torred people were saying we couldnt replace him and we did fine with Suarez. Now you say the same about him

    ReplyDelete
  51. B Rodgers should drop M Skrtel(30) and start playing Lovren(25) and Sakho(24), Lovren(25) needs to master playing as the RCB.

Sakho(24) may not look the best suited on ball, but he is currently the best defender we have at the club.

Lovren(25) and Sakho(24) should be given a run of 12-18 games together and see how they gel. Whilst Manquillo(20) and Moreno(22) should be given the chance to play regularly alongside these two.

The top sides in world football have steady ever present back 4, B Rodgers chopping and changing, the fact he didn't bring in class quality commanding GK to compete with S Mignolet(26), the fact he did not have the balls to bring in a mobile tough tackling enforcer to displace S Gerrard(34) from the first team as DM and the fact he does not have the balls to drop Johnson(30), Skrtel(30) and Gerrard(34) has been fundamental to the clubs abyzmal showing this season.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Nah we Desperately need these 5 class quality players for the p £85M in January: Covering priority Positions:

GK DM CM LWF / RWF FD

    GK: A Begovic(27) Of Stoke for £10-£14M

    DM: M Schneiderlin(25) Of Southampton for £17-£21M

    CM: I Rakitic(26) Of Barcelona for £23-£27M

    LWF/ RWF: K Bellarabi(24) Of B Leverkusen for £7M

    FD: P Aubamayeng(25) Of B Dortmund for £12-£18M

Whilst these 6 dead wood average players should be sold to bring in £25-£30M towards bringing the top class experienced players listed above:

    GK: B Jones(32) RB: G Johnson(30) DM: L Leiva(27)

    CM: J Allen(24) AM: Suso(20) FD: F Borini(23)

"after spending £20m, Rodgers can't afford to just scrap him after six months/a year"

That's a very bad reason ... I think managers are professional enough to know no matter the transfer fee whoever performs on the pitch gets the nod.

  54. Do trust the committee to identify & plug these gaps? I don't!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Who is on the committee? Any footballing men?

    ReplyDelete
  56. That would explain why we didn't revisit the deal in summer.

According to the owners, though, there's a different reason for the deal collapsing: http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/363611/Liverpool-s-deal-for-Yevhen-Konoplyanka-collasped-because-they-didn-t-pay-up

  57. Yeah, that Crystal Palace match had me in shock.

I'm not sure we agree on the Chelsea match. We were doing just fine until an unfortunate slip by Captain G during a comfortable period of possession for us. It wasn't a counter-attack, just an early Christmas gift for Ba. The second was on the counter, though. I would have been livid with BR if we had played for a draw at home against Chelski, especially knowing that our defence last season couldn't keep a swarm of ducklings at bay. Catch-22 for BR, I guess.

But you're right. If we had at least drawn that match the league would have been ours, with no extra attackers needed.

    ReplyDelete
  58. non that i can see

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree with all what you've said it seems the committee's remit is buy low sell high, but like we've seen the quality of scouting leaves a lot to be desired. Which means we are ultimately making a loss on average players.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Let's keep all of our defensive players except Johnson and bring in a defensive coach. Now that Hyppia has left Brighton then we should grab him. It would make a lot of sense bringing him in as defence coach and then get him ready to take over one day. He had a lousy run at Brighton but that's no barometer for his quality as a manager/coach.

    ReplyDelete
  61. How on earth are articles like that taken seriously? Have the British public been so brainwashed by completely over the top idiotic football journalism that random speculation can be taken as an actual story? Bascombe used to be part of dependable team at the Echo but this is unfortunately typical of the kind of nonsense he's coming up with lately. There is NO credibility to this story, it's just a list of players who haven't locked down a regular place in the side. So they might be sold? Wow, what an amazing story, give the man a Pulitzer.

Indeed, Sakho is not a regular starter for Liverpool. While Rodgers continues to search for defensive answers Sakho hasn't been totally convincing but then who has? Skrtel might be the only defender in the past 2 and a half years to lock down a spot but it is fairly well agreed on here that he has made his share of mistakes too. Some would go so far as to say that Skrtel himself is part of the problem. Whatever the story - Liverpool have defensive issues and no, Sakho has not "solved" that. But hopefully Liverpool and Rodgers will soon learn the lesson that simply buying more players won't solve anything. Sakho is a good defender, that's plain enough. Rodgers needs to stop shopping and start coaching.

As for the two left sided defenders issue - it doesn't really add up. When Liverpool are playing in 4 major competitions there are a ton of games to be played. No single pair of CBs could play every game, they'd need to be superhuman. Injuries WILL occur and even if they didn't players would be rested from time to time. So you really need a minimum of 3 quality CBs in the squad that you can rely on. It's simply not possible to do that without having one of those players play on their non-preferred side. You either have two right sided and one left sided, or two left sided and one right sided. How could it be any other way? So the notion that a squad can't support two left sided quality CBs is a misnomer, it's just wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Right footed but has played quite a bit of his football on the left side. When most players are right footed it's common enough that some right footers need to play that left sided role. I suspect Rodgers had hoped that Lovren, having played on the left, would be flexible enough to play both sides without falling to pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Just shows you what people on here know, when they rate Lovren above Sahko, the mind boggles. This was Sahko V Lovren rating, and BR gets slaughtered, typical.
