Deal Close? BR keen to sign €14m striker hailed as Argentina's 'best'. Transfer 'talks' already held in 2013

In February, Jorge Cyterszpiler - the Agent of Argentine striker Luciana Vietto - claimed that he had 'talked to top level clubs like Real Madrid and Liverpool' about a possible summer transfer. The move obviously didn't pan-out, but reports this week suggest that Vietto is one of Brendan Rodgers' January transfer targets.

According to The Mirror:

"Brendan Rodgers wants [Luciano Vietto] to replace old Liverpool favourite Luis Suarez.

"He will have to fork out £12m [14m] to land [him]".

Liverpool have been linked with Vietto several times in the past:

SEP 2012: Brendan Rodgers sent LFC scouts to assess Vietto.

* May 2013: Cyterszpiler told Tuttosport: "The whole world wants Vietto, including Liverpool, Real Madrid, Juventus and other international clubs. Vietto is the best young player in Argentina. "

* Oct 2013: When asked last about Vietto's future, Cyterszpiler enthused: "Vietto is the best young player in Argentina. I have received many offers from several European clubs"

* Oct 2013: The Daily Mail reported "Liverpool and Manchester City are among clubs to have asked about Argentina prospect Luciano Vietto. Both clubs have been monitoring the teenager’s development for over a year".

* Feb 7 2014: Cyterszpiler told CalcioNews24: "There is so much competition, and we have talked to top-level clubs like Real Madrid [and] Liverpool"

* Feb 14 2014: A week later, Cyterszpiler added: "Luciano is playing at a very good level and that has made several teams get interested in him and some others keep an eye on him. Real Madrid and Liverpool have showed a serious interest."

Vietto has 12 goals/6 assists in 23 games for Villareal this season (including 9 goals/assists in the Europa League), which is an impressive record for a 21-year old, and £12m is a fairly reasonable price.

Vietto is often labelled the 'new Sergio Aguero', and the youngster admits that he wants to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot. In a recent interview, he enthused:

"It is great to be compared with players like that. I would love to be half as good as 'Kun' Agüero. He is a great player and he shows it every day. As I said I would love to be a player like him"

Vietto's Agent has repeatedly stated that Liverpool are interested, so there appears to be some veracity to this particular rumour, but the obvious problem is that he will be cup-tied for the Europa League (though I doubt that will deter Rodgers from pursuing a deal).

On a related note: if Liverpool sign a young striker like Vietto, where does that leave Divock Origi?

  1. We dont need another next this and that. Weve been signing those since Houllier and it never works out. So 3 goals in the League so far with half a season gone. I'm not impressed. In that case wed be better off looking at that Polish kid at Ajax who they loaned from Leverkusen. At least he scores goals.

  3. A fair point JJ.......however, there is a theme running through many contributions to this site that all a bigger club has to do is wave a spot of cash, throw in a discarded former 'white hope' ( in the metaphorical sense I stress) and lesser clubs will roll over and be grateful......SFC is different for a few reasons....we dont need the money....our owner Katherine Liebherr has a personal fortune of £2bn.....the club is committed to youth development, as evidenced by the new £30m training and Academy complex......we still have money in the bank......we've come from the depths of League 1 and aren't about to squander money....we have a plan.

The older ways of doing business between clubs with large turnovers and money to burn and smaller ones living on the Premier League version of a shoestring don't apply in our case.....that's a combination of chance and good management......but it makes us different.

  4. Carra didnt accuse him of the use of the elbow; he said he would do "this" (A swinging arm a la paul gascoigne)
telling the truth is not slanderous
    you should know that!!

  5. Jamie, a person having a view that is the same as a group or majority does not necessarily mean that person is following the crowd or regurgitating the group view. In most cases it means their view is a common one. When a party wins a general election, it is not because a few people expressed their views and the majority of voters followed them.

Also, your definition of the word "defamation" is incorrect. Under UK common law, to constitute defamation, a claim must generally be FALSE. If what Carra said is true it cannot be termed as slanderous. It comes under freedom of speech. Stories of what has gone on on training grounds have been around for decades (most footballer/manager biographies contain them).

  6. Jamie, being in the minority does not make your opinion more valid. Hitler was also in the minority with an individual POV.

  7. Classic mate. Did someone mention that Lovren was world class? I don't know in what world that would be?. Surely not ours. I think Lovren is out of his depth. The expectation and the size of the club has overwhelmed him. The scuff that he attempted against Man U was inexcusable. And he's tried that before.

  8. I have to admit I was very disappointed with Carra when I read his comments. For me what happens on the training ground should stay on the training ground.

I dislike players, ex players, Managers etc. telling negative stories about players who are still playing, I personally feel it is unprofessional and has lowered my opinion of Carra.

  12. Because, watching all Liverpool's games, and watching all Chelsea's games, there's not been much to choose between the quality of their performances. I don't go by what the pundits on Sky Sports say, I use my eyes and experience. Of course I rate Fabregas highly, I'm not running him down at all, and I'd love us to have a player of his sheer class in deep midfield.

But Lallana's performances have been all the more impressive as he's been in a struggling side with no functioning striker to supply. Though they perform slightly different roles presently, the two players invite comparison to some extent in that they execute some of their close skills similiarly when protecting the ball. The main differences between them are that Lallana has more pace and a higher work-rate, and so better movement in behind; he's also better at receiving the ball and turning into space. I'd say he's presently the best in the league at doing so. But Fabregas has slightly better range and quality of passing, and perhaps more composure and focus in front of goal.

I think you are underestimating what Lallana's been doing at Liverpool if you think that Fabregas is so far ahead of Lallana that they can't be compared. His growth has been beautiful to see.

    ReplyDelete
  13. While we're on midfielders, what about Nainngolan from Roma? Apparently he can be got for under E20m because of an uncompleted shared ownership deal with Cagliari. If you haven't seen him, check him out. Total beast.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lallana is an AM, Fabregas(27) is a CM.

Mourinho's biggest triumph since his reign is he has got world class Centre midfield Partnership that cost him £52M ( Matic(26) and Fabregas (27) ) Ramires(28) can't even get a look in now

Fabregas(27) range of passing, his vision and the way he keeps ball moving is what makes this Chelsea team Very Dangerous.

Yeah they have Dangerous players like Costa, Drogba, Hazard,Oscar, Remy, Salah, Schurrle and Willian in attack.

But its the pass master Fabregas(27) with the eagle eye that is creating and is always ahead in his thinking than most others.

Lallana(26) has been our most consistant attacker this season and i think him and Coutinho(22) fully fit injury free and in side offer us class and creativity.

But Fabregas(27) is currently the best CM in the Premiership by a mile, if he gets injured or is out suspended for a while everyone will see exactly how vital he has been to their side this season

    ReplyDelete
  15. Spot on, Moreno has made a lot of glaring errors. What do you think of him overall though? He looks very promising to me, along with West Ham's Cresswell the best young left-back in the premier league. If he can eliminate the mistakes, he might become a serious player in due course.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think he is good young full back but if he can cut out his mistakes and master when to go and when to stay instead of bombing forward every second then he will become a massive player for us. I am hoping in summer club ship out L Enrique(27) and sign A Robertson(20) Of Hull the young Scottish left back.

A Moreno(22) and Robertson(20) are two class quality young left backs. Just imagine them both at Anfield competing with one another week in week out

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree, he's a wonderful player and it's been an education watching Chelsea so far this season.

I've actually been surprised by their run, and at the start of the season thought teams would expose their lack of pace in the middle: Matic, Fabregas, Cahill, Terry, none of these players are winning many races. Liverpool nearly did that when we played them.

But because of their pace and efficiency out wide, teams have to defend so deep against them that Chelsea can afford to just close things down behind the midfield. It's simple football really, but so effectively implemented. Much like our best football this year. Just clear and effective tactical ideas, implemented effectively.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nice! Agree with all that. I've not watched Hull much, I'll have a look at Robertson.

While we're here -- what do you make of the goalkeeper question? Who do you rate as a replacement for poor old Mignolet? I'd like to see John Ruddy brought in personally, always rated him, he used to get 85%+ shots saved when he was at Norwich... would have been much higher if it hadn't been for Suarez!

As an experienced player, who as a former Everton player knows the city, and the league, I think he'd be able to slot in pretty seamlessly. I'd be a bit concerned if we brought in one of the flair keepers from overseas that people talk about at this point -- Perin, Ochoa, Ramos. But I've read that Ter Stegen may be available... anyway, what do you reckon?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Carra said what he said as a tv pundit, not a football player and since his job is as a pundit I don't see he has done anything wrong at all.

    ReplyDelete
  20. He obviously didn't mean Shelvey would lash out violently at his team mates 2 or 3 times a week, if he did do you think Shelvey would have ever got in the first team or lasted more than a season at the club?

IMO an objective, non-biased read would conclude that Carra is talking in general terms about Shelvey's game/attitude/lapses in concentration etc.

I know your view of the context of one sentence from Carra is wildly different and I respect that, but if I was to say "I ate sh!t loads for lunch today" would you honestly think I had eaten sh!t for lunch or would you, more realistically, assume I'd eaten a lot?

  29. There is also plenty more money in the league too mate which makes things much stronger for a lot of the league. But mate don't assume the Internet experts who suggest these things are all that representative of our support I am sure you have your own numpies on your own sites. Anyone paying attention knows it's not so simple. Lovren had his price, Lalllana had his price but it is no surprise that Schneidelin didn't get sold. Like with Suarez there are some players that will be very very difficult to replace and your club seem shrewd enough to know it. Believe me when I say there are some aspects of your club that some of us view with envy.

  33. I think S Mignolet(26) is just a great shot stopper and nothing else.

J Ruddy (28) is a good goal keeper but i honestly think A Begovic(27) and H Lloris (27) are the only two GK's in England just a level below Courtois(22), De Gea(24) and J Hart(27).

I think the 5 outstanding Goal keepers in the Premier league in order are as follows:

De Gea (24) Of Man United

    Courtois(22) Of Chelsea
    J Hart(27) Of Man City
    A Begovic(27) Of Stoke
    H Lloris(27) Of Tottenham

Stoke have done very well this season, but are not going to be in the champions league any time soon. And i hope B Rodgers brings in A Begovic(27) Of Stoke in to fix our GK Situation, we were linked with him before we brought S Mignolet(26) to club.

B Rodgers needs to stop thinking Bargain basements buys as what you pay for is what you get , Mignolet(26) cost the club £10M and look how that has planned out. B Rodgers should forget about bring in Ochoa(29) Or Perin(22) would they take time to adapt to the physicality and speed of League. It Took De Gea three seasons to adjust to the league. We need a GK Who will hit the ground running straight away

and lavish praise on the manager ...i find the comments awkward as im a big fan of hendo and his ethics

You don't have to mention their age. And please just and play your football manager you dipshit. disgusting

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes they would but they'd probably cost us somewhere in the region of £70m for all 3 of them

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hahaha! £7m, it's 2014 not 2004. In today's market he's realistically going to go for close to £20m, if not more, assuming Soto agree to sell him

    ReplyDelete
  40. Pretty much agree with all that, though I think Simeone and Rodgers are about the same level, with Klopp and a few other less prominent coaches at clubs around the periphery of the top group.

I'd love to know what's going on behind the scenes at LFC. I worry there's all out war between the coaches and the scouts and the business people. Because the club appeared to *try* and meet all these deficiencies: they *tried* to sign Sanchez and Remy to replace Suarez like-for-like. But something went wrong each time, and then Balotelli, a player I don't believe our manager would have chosen for himself, appears as though on a magic carpet...

It all stinks to me of a real mess, with Rodgers the fall guy. He's going to have to start being more clever and political, I think. I'm very impressed how calm and intelligent he's been in dragging the team out of its loss of form to its present position, quietly putting together a run of one defeat in 10.

As I said, if you're a regular, as your post suggests, you're either popping up out of the blue with nothing to contribute (never seen a post from you before) or you've created an alternative account just to post your mouth-breather dribble = coward.

So to conclude, and here comes my ban that I'll happily accept, you sir are a twat!

  43. Your example is not relevant to what Carragher said. That kind of comment is obviously not literal; Carragher's comment can easily be construed as literal.

    ReplyDelete
  44. My definition of defamation is 100% correct. I know that for a fact. You are wrong. Plus, defamation is defined by *statute*, not common law.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Good angle, Jaimie. It'd be great to see defamatory language brought under control in football. It could lead to some very helpful and overdue clarifications. Is that player really, literally a w*nker? Did Posh Spice, *really*, literally? Is this or that player really, literally shit? We have a right to know, and furthermore, to hear such matters decided once and for all before a court of law.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You and others can trivialise all you like with your irrelevant examples, but casting unprovable negative aspersions against fellow players is crass, and ex-players like Carragher shouldn't be doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. But it's only chatting about football. Football *is* trivial. It *is* crass. Football and everything around it is essentially escapist fluff. God knows, real life is litigious enough. I'm amused at your re-imagining of football as a legalistic dystopia ruled by sharp-clawed legal eagles -- I didn't suppose for a moment that you were serious. Were you serious?!

    ReplyDelete
  48. No, your view on the issue is what trivialises football. 'Escapist fluff'. Give me a break. I guess the Suarez-Evra situation was just escapist fluff, right? Ditto the Keane-Haaland incident; Ron Atkinson calling Marcel Desailly a racist name on live TV; Gerrard slagging off Diouf, Diao et al in his book whilst they were still playing for the club. We should just brush all this stuff under the carpet because football is just 'escapist fluff'.

In m view, the reason why racism etc is still rife in football is because of laissez-fair attitudes like yours.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Don't think Carra comments were out of line. One of the great things about him being a pundit is that he can offer incites into players he has played with and against. If Shelvey cuts that out of his game then people will stop talking about his actions.

    ReplyDelete
  50. stupid topic i reckon, twist his interpretation to suit whichever agenda either side of the argument wants.
what i want to know is how was a 4 match ban allowed to be passed on shelvey when the ref was staring right at it?
can someone explain that to me? i thought if the ref sees the incident and doesnt think its worth a whistle then it cant be taken any further or am i confused?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Haha! Not often I get described as laissez-faire.

Suarez and Atkinson were rightly disciplined for what they said, and the things they said were not things that I would say, or that I would tolerate being said in my home, my workplace, or in my social life. But promoting these kinds of little incidents to a magnified status, something which football culture tends to do, can also be a way of sweeping racism -- this applies to other forms of discrimination, too -- "under the carpet". It enables institutions to deal with individuals rather than structures and systems. It enables people to think that "Suarez and Atkinson were punished, and that "therefore English football isn't racist".

That kind of thinking is prevalent and it is corrosive. So maybe why racism etc are still rife in English football is because of opportunist attitudes like yours, which in magnifying trivial offenses to the scale of significant crimes allow events to set the agenda and allow the underlying structures which sustain racist discrimination to go unscrutinised.

    Laissez-faire indeed! You got me!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Who are you comparing him to? How many managers are allowed into the category of "the best in the world"? And what are the criteria you are judging him by? And happy new year!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Good post mate

    ReplyDelete
  54. The idea that highlighting possible defamation of a player can lead to racism being 'swept under the carpet' is possibly the most ignorant statement I've read in a while.

There's absolutely no correlation between what I've posted and the incidents to which you refer.

    Plus, re this:

"It enables people to think that "Suarez and Atkinson were punished, and that "therefore English football isn't racist".

The mind boggles. Where is the evidence that people think this way? There is none; it's just you trying to make a tenuous point that has no real basis in reality.

    ReplyDelete
  55. That's exactly how I interpreted Carra's comments too

    ReplyDelete
  56. I do...its a combination of going into administration and therefore being able to build up from a sort of Ground Zero, the support of a wealthy owner and a plan....Saints have reached a tipping point......we have probably overtaken Everton as the regular team to finish just outside the top 4 or 5, we don't have the commercial income yet of Spurs...they out-distance us by some 90%, though our gates and TV money are comparable. Our youth development is superior and the owner underwrites capital investment but not revenue subsidy.......by 2017 we will have sufficient playing strength to get into the top 4 once every couple of years.....So Morgen isn't for sale, just to return to the point........but I would be surprised if he were still with us come September 1st....unless we just wing a Champions League spot!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh gosh!

    1. You brought up racism. I was talking about football being trivial. I was not talking about racism being trivial.

    2. I don't *actually* care what Jaimie Carragher thinks of Jonjo Shelvey. Do you, really and truly, *actually* care about that? It can't imagine living a life in which that was considered anything other than fluff to anyone other than those concerned. It is amusing to pretend to care about it for the sake of passing the time entertainingly. That's why we're here, isn't it? God help us if not!

    2. You brought up Atkinson and Suarez.

    3. Your mind is, then, rather easily boggled. It's a commonplace mechanism. It's how scapegoating works.

    4. Tenuous points seems to be the order of the day.

    Happy new year!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Man I love this stuff, that gives an insight into how players think and talk about each other in private. The bitchier the better. I remember Carragher talking about playing with Enrique, not knowing what he was going to do -- that sort of thing is really interesting to me. I wish they'd do it more!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Saints wouldn't let him leave for anything less than £25m to £30m. They told Tottenham £27m minimum but then after the others left, they closed that door. Joe Allen might fit in at a club like CPFC, Hull, QPR etc at the bottom end of the table or even at a top Championship side but not in a top 10 Prem club.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Better to go and see what he actually said and how he said it. JK's interpretation of what someone else said he said differs a lot from what I saw and heard him say.

  64. You should view the comments not rely upon a written second or even third hand edited version of what he was supposed to have said. The footage is still available on the web.

I can see you can change your view on things as evidenced yb the para above which begins with "At first glance.........." ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Fair enough.

If, as you say, most people believe what Carrra said is true then it may not have been the right thing to say but it ain't slander,

    ReplyDelete
  66. How can one player kick out and deliberately trip up another player off the ball and it not be retrospectively punished. The answer is it makes FA sense

    ReplyDelete
  67. If we're going to get technical, do you really think that Shelvey could successfully sue for slander for these comments? I think that neither in the eyes of the law nor in the eyes of most common folk Carragher has accused Shelvey of anything defamatory.

    ReplyDelete
  68. You like me know players are many managers are few and i never said he was in the top 10 managers but his c.v is well above average.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think Shelvey could launch a slander suit, yes. Whether he'd win is a different story, but the mere existence of the case would bring the issue into the public eye, and make public figures in football less like to make damaging generalisations.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Robo, the thing is Simeone(44) not only is a top class manager, he was also a top class football player and is world reknown. Therefore he can attract the best and top players in football to wherever he goes.

B Rodgers is a good coach but a poor manager, some of his decisions and bad transfers will cost him his job come the end of the season.
After conceding 50 goals plus last season in premier league it was blatantly obvious our GK needed some real class quality competition for his place and another Top Class GK Was needed.

It was and is also blatantly obvious to see S Gerrard(34) is not a DM, but because of his name and status B Rodgers has decided he has to have starting place for him like he is indispensable. 6-7 years ago, they would have been the case but S Gerrard(34) now is not the S Gerrard (27) we had 7 seasons ago and should be used wisely off the bench.

L Leiva(27) is the only DM we have in squad but due to his lack of energy, legs, mobility, pace and strength he struggles like S Gerrard(34) to properly protect back four and GK. But he is the best we have at club, so L Leiva(27) should start ahead of S Gerrard(34) as DM every week if they are both fully fit.

But a class mobile good tackling DM should have been brought to club in the summer. Those two huge mistakes will the reason B Rodgers losses his job come the end of the season.

Yeah we Lost Suarez(27) and Sturridge(25) has been out for a long time but that does not mean we can't nick games 1 0 2 0 0 1 0 2 away from home. And be harder to beat and break down

B Rodgers biggest mistakes with current squad is he does not have the balls or guts to drop the liabilities, problems and weaknesses in side consistantly and let the young boys do their thing: Who are all experienced players:

CB'S : M Skrtel(30) and K Toure(33) should both start on the bench week in week out if all the other defenders are fully fit, injury and suspension free.

RB: G Johnson(30) should be sold now and Manquillo(20) needs to be given a run of 12-18 games to get some experience and confidence and push on. Playing one game then being dropped when you have done nothing wrong to be changed is poor and comical decision

DM: S Gerrard(34) should never be in the same side as L Leiva(27). But L Leiva(27) should be sold this month and replaced by M Schniederlin(25) Of Southampton for £16-£21M

And then S Gerrard(34) should be kept on the bench unless we need him late on in games, he is way past his best and is a passenger in the centre of the park now adays. Unless he is given time on ball or penalty, S Gerrard(34) does not effect games.
