'LFC need him': Legend confirms BR has 'looked at' signing €8m 'superstar' to replace struggling Mignolet

In December, multiple reports claimed that Liverpool have agreed a January deal for €8m-rated Malaga stopper Guillermo Ochoa, and according to Anfield legend Bruce Grobbelaar, the Reds are definitely in for the Mexican.

Speaking to TalkSport on Tuesday, Grobbelaar claimed:

"I’m not encouraged by Mignolet. Liverpool need another goalkeeper and I believe Ochoa from Mexico has been looked at"

Liverpool have tracked the €8m-rated 'superstar' for the last two years. The story so far:

JAN 2013: Liverpool made a €6m bid for Ochoa, and in an interview at the time, the 27-year old stopper told Reporters: "My agent had contact with Liverpool, and I hope this summer there will be some offers. There is no doubt, though, that this one of the dreams I've have had since I came to Europe".

MAR 2013: Ochoa told Mediotiempo: "There is interest from Liverpool, but I have to let things happen. I feel very good, in the professional and sporting way. Physically, I am also very well"

APR 2014: Eurosport claimed that the Reds are still monitoring Ochoa, with a view to signing him this summer.

APR 2014: When asked about Liverpool's interest, Ochoa told Todomercadoweb.es: "I have several offers from different countries, and I am willing to listen to all the offers. My agent is dealing with everything and I do not exclude a future in Italy or England."

When asked over the weekend about Ochoa's future, his agent made it clear that a January exit is a definite possibility. He told reporters:

"If a good offer arrives in January, we'll assess it and see if we can reach an agreement that suits all parties. We have to get an offer that sparks his enthusiasm. There's been some contact already"

If Ochoa signs, he will be under intense pressure to do well, and that could be counter-productive. Just look at the Dejan Lovren situation - when he arrived, Rodgers immediately put pressure on him by immediately lauding him as a 'leader', and Lovren subsequently crumbled under the weight of expectation.

Does Ochoa have the mental strength to withstand the inevitable pressure and expectation?

  1. From what I hear Ochoa is not the answer.

  2. Apparently like Mignolet he is good shot stopper
but poor distribution and clumsy at coming out at crosses like Mignolet

so if those people are right
    thanks but no thanks

  5. Oh yeah i would not completely trust these ex players
Phill Tompson has more connection with liverpool then Grobbelar
And he said Sanchez deal was a done deal

  6. if people look back at his performance at the world cup most of his "great saves" were shots that were straight at him...not very difficult for a pro keeper...i dont think he's anything special.

  7. Ochoa is one goalkeepers, I think it the solution, he is a good shot stopper and has improved at coming out at crosses. Anyone who has seen his performances in Ajaccio and World Cup knows it, he is better now at coming out at crosses, he is good with the 1 vs 1, good with both feet, good kick offs and a great shot stopper. He will succeed in Liverpool.

  14. I managed to get talking to our under 18 manager two summers ago aat the milk cup competition in Northern Ireland and managed to ask him about jonjo and a few other players he said "the reason why jonjo is being sold is due to his attitude and his personal conduct". Now I'm not stating this was in training but the kid obviously has problems, however considering we signed ballotelli, surely Shelley couldn't be any worse than that bloody ejit!

  16. Jonjo is the archetypal English player-thug who feels he has to put that little extra in every challenge to show his toughness, a la young rooney, joey barton etc

  17. carra didnt state he "tries" to do that 2-3 times a week intentionally. if you want to throw the letter of law at him then you gotta work on your quote analysis. shelvey clearly has an unintentional drawback in his game that he needs to work on.

  18. I'm trying to discuss the motive behind you expressing that opinion, not what your opinion actually is. Forget it...

  19. You know what, I'm a big fan of Ochoa, but I agree with Gilstrap that we need to be going for the next big thing in goalkeeping; someone that demonstrates a superior ability and potential to capitalise on that skill and consolidate themselves as a truly excellent keeper the way De Gea and Courtois have done. Mattia Perin seems an obvious choice. Cech is welcome, too, but he's not a long-term solution, and top goalkeepers don't come around too often.
