Backstabbed: Ex-Red reveals how FSG betrayed Rodgers 'a couple of times' by trying to 'sack' him

After a series of poor results this season, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is in a precarious position at Anfield, and according to ex-Red Stan Collymore, LFC co-owner John Henry is desperate to wield the axe and make a change at the top.

In an interview on Friday, Collymore claimed:

"I heard a couple of weeks ago that John Henry has tried to sack Brendan Rodgers a couple of times already.

"He was persuaded not to by Ian Ayre and a couple of club legends, who were sought out for their counsel"

I see no reason for Collymore to lie about something like this, and if it's true, then Rodgers really is a dead man walking at Anfield.

The question is, which 'club legends' went to bat for Rodgers? In my view, it's probably a couple of players from the following list:

* Kenny Dalglish
* Ian Rush
* John Aldridge
* Roy Evans
* Jan Molby
* John Barnes
* Robbie Fowler

Kudos to whoever had the sense to talk Henry out of pulling the trigger. In my view, it's pretty disgraceful that FSG would consider sacking Rodgers only a few months after he led the club to second in the Premier League table.

After such an amazing season, it's nothing short of a scurrilous betrayal. Results are admittedly unacceptable at Liverpool right now, but I maintain that Rodgers has earned the right to keep his job until the end of the season.

  1. Sorry, but why is it unacceptable. This is a guy with the ego the size of a planet that fails to appreciate that Liverpool achieved what they did on the back of Suarez not him. History tells a story...... just speak to Reading F C fans

  2. Henry is ruthless, he ain't give a sh*t.

  3. JH is doing what he needs to do if he feels its best for the club, i believe BR should have till the end of the season to sort this out, unless it completely implodes of course.
    but the owners looking at other options is their right and shows they are not complacent with failure.

  4. To tell you the truth, I'm sick of people saying that simply having Suarez was the only reason we played so well last year. Suarez was out of this world, but the team as a whole played out of their skins bar the defenders. Having Suarez didn't guarantee top spot for us the year before, and having Neymar, Suarez AND Messi hasn't even put Barca top of La Liga.
    Now if you can please explain why Rodgers should not get credit for last years team performance, and also developing Suarez himself into one of the games' top strikers, then I'm all ears.
    If you said his tactics against Chelsea last year cost us the PL, then you may well have a point. But ego itself never stopped Clough, Ferguson, Van Gaal or Mourinho from being great managers; none of those won the league in their first year either, and maybe not the 2nd either.
    He has earned the right to a full season . Deal with it.

  5. BR should drop ANY defender that turns his back when blocking a shot, tens of thousands , sometimes over £100,000 a week and they don't want to be hit in the face by a ball? just check how many times it happens. The worst offender is Johnson. remember Crystal Palace's 1st goal at the end of last season? What a wuss. Drives me nuts.
    And yes, that includes you, Stephen Gerrard

  6. Sorry in a world where money talks is Henry betraying anyone?especially one who is going to give a massive payout to someone for doing sweet FA (contract payout) thus i think not.
    I am all for Rodgers staying but this club needs a level of ruthlessness success is never built on giving the benefit of the doubt all the time we have been too merciful at times.
    I am actually hoping that ruthlessness translates to the playing group throats need to be slashed players need to be on notice its a privilege not a right to play at our mighty club.

  7. not sure I agree with success never being built on sticking with a manager...

  8. Really? collymore has an insight??, get a grip! Ridiculous story but keep up with the insights and the rest of the garbage.

  9. If Rodgers is sacked, it should not be due to our current poor run of results - this can happen to any manage (just ask Klopp). It should only be based on his persistent failure in the transfer market and his famed inability to get his teams to defend. FSG should then remove anyone who has anything to do with the transfer committee and then revise their policy on buying only young potential for profit.

  10. Everyone 'ITK' is having their few cents worth. FSG probably are hard at work finding a suitable replacement so Rodgers may well get till the end of the season but you never know, a loss tomorrow might be the end of the line for Rodgers.

  11. Rubbish. Ian Ayre is just a pawn. He has no say in the running of this club and deciding on whether to sack Rodgers or not. As for Collymore, former players have never been right. Remember Grobelaar with Jan transfers or Thompson with Sanchez.

  12. Sid Henry still gets advice and opinions from members of staff before taking matters into his own hands he is too smart not to.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I highly doubt Ayre if anyone is the one advising him. It would probably be someone from the outside.

    BTW, you are an Aussie right. Are you watching the game?

  14. Sorry what game Sid i generally watch all Liverpools matches bar some cup games.

  23. Those who think we can finish 4th this season with a delusional manager need to think again.

    1st season under Rodgers after 15 matches
    Won 4 Drew 7 Lost 4 Points 19. 19 scored and 18 conceded. Gap between ourselves and 4th = 7 points. Finished 7th

    This season
    Won 6 Drew 3 Lost 6 Points 21. 19 scored and 19 conceded. Gap between ourselves and 4th = 7 points. 1.4 points per game which will see us finish around 7th again.

    The similarities of Rodgers first six months of his debut season are there for all to see. Average at best and after spending £120m this season how can one defend him?

  24. Surely this is a stab to the chest whilst looking Rodgers dead in the eye. Anyone who messes with Henry's money *DALGLISH* will feel the wrath of the the Henry quick fast and in a hurry.

  25. FSG can do whatever they like especially when they have seen their investments essentially flushed down the toilet. If Markovic ever becomes a top player I would love to buy everyone a pint & apologise.

  26. Who leaked Sterling's contract talks? Scandalous

    ReplyDelete
  27. Do you believe Markovic will become a top player?

  28. So collymore thinks Rogers has earned the right to blow another 115 million and god knows what in jan,just one question , after spending more than 200 million ,Sturridge apart how many of these signings would get a game at the so called top four, maybe lallana on a bench .to see Rogers claiming he is best man for job ,Jesus Christ I won't go any further ,the language would get me banned

  29. BR was lucky to have 2 players last season who between them had 52 goals 19 assists and won 5 penalties. Enough to cover the cracks in our defence last season. To not be able to solve our defensive issues in 2.5 seasons is inadequate to say the least. It is what is costing us heavily. Every time any teams shows attacking intent we look panicked and anxious. Leaving supporters feeling the same way.

  30. Collymore isn't particularly reputable as source.

  31. Jamie as much as I respect your opionion what this season is showing us so far is that lasts season success was down to SAS and not Rodgers .... Since he has taken over our defence has been awful and even after blowing so much money trying to fix it he has not ... His tactics are bizarre to say the least and we play the most dire football and are so predictable that we make weak teams look like world beaters .... At the moment his best players are not the ones he signed and he is relying on then to get us out of the pickle meanwhile his expensive assembled bench sits on the sides wondering why they signed for the club when they not even getting a decent run in the team...

  32. Great post. At the moment BR is living on what we accomplished last season. He had the entire summer to address our defensive problems and a replacement for Saurez.

    He has done neither and if anything we have regressed in every area on the pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dhoni in place of Saha would have been enough.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I understandably hear plenty of complaints on hear about BR & FSG.but I think most of you have missed your own clues in your own comments.think the majority agree BR should go & probably at the end of the season but haven't heard any genuine constructive criticism.i.e. who should replace him especially those who think he should go now.& be honest you can name any manager in the world of football but before you start writing every top managers name at least consider the realism of them wanting or being allowed to come.do you really think pep wants to leave Bayern.do you think Bayern would let him leave.this problem doesn't just come with pep just an example.perspective please people.who's that we can get & would want the job.poisoned chalice springs to mind.

  35. Results have been poot for three seasons. 200 million poor. I doubt a business like Henry will let himself be talked out of any decision tbh. I'd much sooner believe Collymore will do anything to get attention

  36. the managers you have named were all winners when their ego started to develop, rodgers is based on absolutely nothing.. ego is justified when its on the back of success rodgers is just arrogant, who has a big painting of himself above the fireplace for christ sake or classes himself as his biggest influence!!! it would b hilarious if it wasnt at my club tbh.. he "deserves" nothing. you get what you deserve in this game and had he won the league last year he would get a season of good will but he didnt.. simple as that, no matter how close we came the fact is all he achieved was his objective and the minimum objective for liverpool every year, which was champions league football, doing your job for one season doesnt give you the right to not do it the following season without consequence, every liverpool manager who fails to get top 4 gets the bullet, the fact is his season of good will was last year because better managers who achieved more for the club have been sacked for what rodgers did in his 1st year, he doesn't deserve a free pass every 2 seasons.. hes been given time and money, hes the 5th longest serving manager in the league and has WASTED close to quarter of a BILLION quid in less than 2 and a half years, hes has failed for the majority of his time here and we have regressed this season to a place where were worse than his disastrous first season in charge, he has to go simple as that, didn't deserve the job based on his cv in the 1st place and certainly doesn't deserve to keep it based on meeting his objective once in 2 and a half years.. he only deserves to keep the job for as long as it takes for us to find a suitable replacement, if thats monday morning or may than fine but hes time is up either way of that there should be no doubt imo

  37. It was reported earlier that Rodgers has said " No one can do this job better than me, I am the right man for the job". This is what scares me, he is so adamant that he is perfect that he fails to recognise mistakes he has made. Being in mid table and out of the Champions league as well as managing a team playing the worst football in recent memory, how is it even possible for Rodgers to think he's the best never mind state it publicly. The fact remains, in the summer we lost a world class player, to replace him the best man for the job decided the way forward was to buy lots of average players. Football is all about results, if they don't improve within the next few weeks I would fully understand FSG looking at replacing Rodgers during the January window. To stick with him even if the bad results keep coming will mean no silverware this season, no top 4, less money and back at square one into obscurity.

  38. Ego without evidence of achievement is foolishness until proven otherwise! Saurez was so versatile & hard working as well as inspirational BR's tactical deficiencies would have be hidden. So if you like let's give BR credit for picking Saurez!
