Carra warns: €12m star is 'fighting for his LFC career' & BR may 'move him on' soon

Over the weekend, Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet claimed he has nothing to prove re his goalkeeping ability, but LFC legend Jamie Carragher disagrees, and insists that the Belgian is running out of time to save his Anfield career.

When asked about his recent relegation to the bench, Mignolet magnanimously conceded that he tried to make 'something positive from a negative', but bristled at the suggestion that his overall ability is now in question. He told The Guardian:

“I don’t have to prove anything. The only thing I can do is work hard and do my best and show what I am capable of on the pitch.”

Responding to Mignolet's comments, Carra dismissed Mignolet's bravado, and claimed he has 'everything to prove between now and the end of the season'. He further added:

"He [Mignolet] is fighting for his career at Liverpool. These next four months are pivotal to his whole career, and if Liverpool move him on, will he get a chance at a big club again?"

This is yet another reason why Mignolet is not going to make it at Liverpool. Working hard is all well and good, but if he genuinely thinks he has 'nothing to prove', then I seriously doubt he has the requisite desire to really push himself to improve.

In his interview, Mignolet pays lip-service to the idea of improving, but overall, it seems like he has an inflated idea of his own ability, and reading between the lines, it appears that he believes that simply trying harder on the field will make all the difference.

With the greatest respect to Mignolet, his best just isn't good enough, and working hard is not going to solve the problem. In my view, he needs intensive coaching on several vital aspects of his game (Distribution/communication/command of the box etc), and if he's to become a truly top-class goalkeeper, then a sea-change of improvement in those areas is required.

Actions speak louder than words, and as Carra suggests, Mignolet has four months to show major signs of improvement in the aforementioned areas. Can he do it? I hope so, as it will mean saving Liverpool a shedload of money on a new, European-class goalkeeper...

I honestly don't believe Mignolet is capable of rising above his current level, though, and if Rodgers goes into next season with the Belgian as his number-one 'keeper, then he'll have no one to blame but himself when it all goes wrong (again).

  1. Absolutely rubbish at kicking, distribution in general, commanding his area, coming for crosses.

Average at 1 on 1's, punching.

    Good shot stopper

    Missed his chance, hasn't progressed

    Get shut

  2. Even my dad was slagging Mignolet off last night and he is one of the most laid back fans i know! His distribution, passing from the back and just general goalkeeping is terrible. He probably needs a Harry Redknapp type manager to put their arm around him and say "Simon, you're world class"

  3. But can u imagine the scenario our best keeper comes off injured and we turn to Mignolet- I don't think he should even be our no 2. You're right he's missed his chance he hasn't got any better

  4. I am not sure that is completely accurate or fair......Is he really a good shot stopper?

I cannot remember saying how did he keep that out but then I am usually just so relieved that the ball is not in the back of the net.

  5. if you cant kick a ball at 25 /26 its time to pack up because you are mot getting any better at it ,is there something up with him medically something in his inner ear which affects him,i havnt played football for 25 years but when i have a kick about with the kids i can still kick a ball straight and quite far out of my hands wearing trainers on a field .....it really isnt that hard but mingo a pro footballer payed millions with state of the art facilities at his disposal can not do it its ludicrous .

  8. Mignolet's attitude says it all. Prior to the World Cup, he stated that he thought he should be Belgium's number one over Courtois - he isn't good enough and he doesn't seem to know it. Confidence is one thing but being deluded and not having the ability to honestly appraise ones performance is only going to hold him back. Compare his attitude to that of Lucas and Henderson after difficult first years.

  9. Mignolet and Rogers are of the same feathers, BR doesn't want to accept his mistake of buying unworld class players, its not a new chapter with mignolet but BR give on insisting on Mignolet because he bought him. the same thing with Lovren and mario He knows they are not good enough but insist of using them.Rogers has to take part of the blame, he sent Pepe away and now he is Dilemma.

  11. Villa will want 20m minimum to let Delph go in Jan.

Jan window = inflated prices for regular first team players

  12. its different when a player only has 6 months until they leave for free...

  13. Have not seen much of Salah lately

  14. Doesn't really tick the pace or high tempo pressing boxes. They seem to be very important to fit BR's style.
I wouldn't be bothered if we don't bid for him

  15. Bolloxs! I've got better stats! Why buy unproven when Bony/martinez
    Are ready made for us!!!!!

  16. Or at least not until they've bought Lacazette to replace him

  17. Half of one left foot and he could still be doing better.

  18. Very true. Forgot he's stalling on a new contract

  19. And actually being upright, on your feet and in the right position - all those things were not synonymous with Carroll when he was at LFC.
In fact the only really good header I remember by Carroll when he was at LFC was against Sweden!

Same can't be said about him now though to give him his dues

  20. Wisdom hasn't consistently played CB since LFC academy days

  21. Will someone please buy that boy a new pair of shooting boots, he could be a 20 goal a season player

  22. Levezzi is good but not sure if LFC can afford his high wages.

  23. Sad but true. With players like Ruddy, Perin, Ter Stegen, Ochoa, all supposedly available, upgrades appear to be easy to come by.

I feel sorry for Mignolet. It's always sad to see goalkeepers losing confidence, the way their games fall apart is horrible. Simon had such a great start at the club, and he seemed to thrive at first, but he's not been able to grow into the role, the job's been too big for him. It's time for him to take some time out and find a new club.

  24. Yeah he never got tall enough unfortunately. Hard to see a future for him at Liverpool now.

  25. Suarez was also converted from a winger or creative forward to a central striker by Rodgers. Or do you think that was a mistake as well.

  26. no duncan doug nuts

  27. Like Borini, who he's trying to sell? Or like Aspas and Alberto, who he's trying to sell? Your criticism doesn't stand up.

  28. its not the fans who buy then its the management

  29. Let's club together and buy him some 12 inch platform boots, a 7 footer might get more of a look in ;)

  30. Maybe he's had that Japanese foot binding done and he wears a size 1 boot- seriously tho how can he and Jones be your choice of keepers when going for the title after all BR did say this was the year we would 'push on'

  31. This transfer hope will not happen in this window.

  32. One and a half games at CB after barely playing all season and he played like he's a regular starter there ( well, like one of our regular CB starters anyway haha)

  33. Unfortunately hands are on the end of his legs and feet at the end of his arms

  34. One of many Rodgers signings I never understood and one of many he got wrong. What really did those 9 million bring us that Reina could not have? So we swapped a loyal servant to save a bit on wages whilst we lost quality on the pitch and spent 9 million to do so. I doubt our savings were substantial enough to justify that.

  35. Needs to put on a bit of weight first

    ReplyDelete
  36. Not really...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Why not both?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lavezzi has never been a goal scorer and that's what we need right now. He wont improve our chances one bit. As a transfer option after we sign a goalkeeper, DM and striker? Sure.

    ReplyDelete
  39. he will never sign. he will go to Arsenal or Chelsea so he can live in London. same old story . . .

    ReplyDelete
  40. Chelsea probably only bought him so that we didn't have him

    ReplyDelete
  41. Sign him up and sign an out-and-out striker as well. We need to push very hard for a top 4 finish and Lavezzi can certainly aid in that mission.

  42. Defo Kop player thing is can the sign him or more average players
