'It attracts me': £9m Man Utd reject tracked by LFC wants Prem move. Sign or ignore?

Last season, Liverpool were linked with Hannover 96 stopper Ron-Robert Zieler, and with the Reds desperately needing a challenger/replacement for Simon Mignolet, the German has hinted that he could be amenable to a transfer away.

A year ago, German newspaper Bild claimed that:

* Liverpool were tracking the 24-year old 'keeper, who was once on Manchester United's books.

* Zieler has a £9m release clause in his contract.

When asked this week about his future, Zieler told reporters:

"I just renewed my contract for three years, but the Premier League continues to attract me. There are a lot of clubs that are appealing, but there is not the one club of whom I say: 'I want to play there one day."

Zieler's long-term goal is to play in England, and he underlined that last season. He told Bild:

"I have a past as a player in England; I fluently speak the language, and my desire is to play for a top club during my career. The people over there are totally keen on football and I am definitely able to imagine playing for a club in the Premier League"

Germany manager Joachim Loew is a big fan of Zieler, and in a recent interview, he enthused:

"The Hannover goalkeeper [Ron-Robert Zieler] is great, he's really good and has a lot of class,"

German national team coach Andreas Keopke also rates the 'keeper:

"They [Zieler and ter Stegen] have great serenity, and they've played outstanding this season with some great performances"

Zieler clearly has his heart set on a move to the Premier League, so should Liverpool reignite interest? Well, based on his stats for the last few years, let's hope not:

* 11-12: 61 goals conceded (GC) in 49 apps (11 clean sheets)
* 12-13: 85 GC in 49 apps (11 clean sheets)
* 13-14: 63 GC in 36 apps (7 clean sheets)
* 14-15: 14 GC in 11 apps (4 clean sheets)
* Overall Totals: 234 GC in 160 apps.
* Concedes a goal every 1.5 games.

I find it hard to believe that Liverpool would be interested a goalkeeper with such a horrific goals-conceded record. Reds fans were up in arms after Mignolet conceded 50+ goals last season, but for Zieler, 50 would be an achievement (!)

Liverpool were allegedly interested once, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility the club could go in for him again, but based purely on stats, there are plenty of superior options out there.

  1. I always rated Zieler, but I've never really looked up the stats... some of them are a bit worrying.

  2. What's your analysis of the game and Rodgers Jaimie?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Yeh that would be right... another reject

  4. Simon Mignolet controls his area with zero personality.Listen to one of his boring interviews. There's nothing for a goalkeeping coach to work with.
Trying to transform Mignolet into a player who commands his box and gives the backline confidence is mission impossible.
One of the things i liked about Reina was he controlled his area like a self-assured matador.
Whoever we bring in needs to have big character.Ron Robert Zieler? No thanks!

  5. Rodgers and the board are in serious trouble. . The players we bought are a joke. I said last year in our run that our problem is our 3 mids Henderson is the worse player I have ever seen, he just runs everywhere that's it. Constantly plays back every time he gets the ball. Allen is not Liverpool quality. The way we constantly waist money is embarrassing. At least Gerard tried to play forward tonight. Sterling wants 100k a week and plays likes that?.Lamberts ? 4 million for that dinosaur , and he didnt win a single header when came on. I'd rather aspas. I feel sorry for coutinho and balatelli. The service they got was ordinary at best. Then there's loverjn. 25 million for him. I shake my head every time I see him in our team. O wait then there's lallana. 25 million for him. Jesus Christ. I look at the payers united buy, di Maria falcoa rojo etc and that's without champions league. What hope do we have . And that's the reality. We don't act like a big club. Unless we spend at least another 80 or 100 million on "world class" players we have not got a chance. Very concerned supporter.

  6. Being the fact that no one in this side has had an outstanding season one may say that Rodgers needs to sort the men out from the boys.
His tactics this season are tried and found wanting if i were wanting to sort out this team he really needs to bring in new staff to help with everything especially the defense the ability is there that is for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Rodgers to stick with Skrtel, Lovren and Johnson at the back which will see us concede many more goals and the fact that he is sticking with one up top will see the goals against outweigh the goals for.

We cannot defend, leaking goals and we cannot score = disaster.

FSG will be watching closely and those who think they had made +- £120m available in the last window to finish outside the top 4 are as delusional as Rodgers at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Unless you we have a manager with a deadly sharp eye for cheap talent, I'm starting to become convinced that it's going to be too hard to keep at the top by spending all this money on 'solid' players. We don't need UCL to attract players. We need money. If we offered great players enough money, they'd be more than happy to come. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but maybe we should have kept a lot of youngsters as depth, and saved up more money to buy bigger, better players. Maybe wage expenses could have been more concentrated on fewer but better than players, rather than 10 or so new players.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yes we should have used the kids coming through for depth and bought as close to world class as we can get.
I said that the whole window but what do i know?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think there was this general belief that we weren't going to attract that calibre regardless, but as United showed, all you need is money. I'm sure that FSG have it. They also need to realise that in this competition, moneyball won't really work to stay in the top 4 when all of the other competitors are spending big. It's not like a more even MLB competition.

    ReplyDelete
  11. And even if we don't spend big on big players, why splash 20 million for Markovic when you could get Griezmann for 20 million? Bloody mind boggling.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Spot on Nick we had made the C.L the time to worry about tomorrow was over we needed the now.
Also very disappointed in getting the likes of Lallana when Isco was there and it seems Tadic at 10 mill is going to be a better player than Lallana.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Moneyball left with Comolli. Even Chelsea are buying the best young players.

Maybe we should not have signed so many new players. We have great attacking options but our defence still needs work. I really would have liked to see Ilori given a run this season. Sakho keeps on being overlooked while Johnson and Skrtel are the go to defenders when they should not be automatic starters especially when they have been rubbish all season.

Clearly we have made a huge blunder by signing Lovren for £20m. Steven Caulker has actually been a player that has impressed me over the years. We could have got him for less than half what we paid for Lovren.

If Rodgers does not start making use of Sakho who has clearly been nothing but a scapegoat then that is another massive waste of talent and money.

FSG watching closely how Rodgers keeps on digging that hole for himself.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Moneyball Loges has nothing to do with age its statistically based and in its purest form is aimed at players whose prices are generally low.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes I know that. I never said Moneyball had anything to do with age.

That is why I said that Moneyball left with Comolli and that Chelsea also sign young and talented players.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I reckon the managerial situation at LFC will become the main talking point over the coming weeks and if things do not improve then FSG like they have demonstrated before will pull the plug.

One thing is for sure, If Rodgers goes, the transfer committee goes with him and i am pretty sure they have a list of replacements stashed away somewhere.

If Rodgers does go then who should replace him?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I originally thought Rafa but in saying that, he's not that good in the transfer market. Well at least not at Liverpool, don't know how he's performed since then.

Klopp? Simeone (doubt it)? Ancelotti? Moyes? :p

    ReplyDelete
  18. The thing about Lovern is he came in with a good reputation, and played completely different last season. I reckon that any defender we bring in will struggle. It's down to the coaching.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think we're still doing moneyball to some extent, but not the extent that Comolli did. What's pissed me off that, in hindsight, we didn't act like a big club in the summer window.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ha Ha. FSGe and Rafa is like ice cold water into a pot of boiling oil and i for one do not want that dicattor back at Anfield either.

Ancelotti I am sure is quite happy at Madrid and Simeone not going to leave his post either. Not sure i would go with Klopp.

Guus Hiddink for me would be a brilliant move. Vast amounts of experience and has managed in the EPL before and did a fantastic job too.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think the new signing are getting the wrong end of the stick especially when Rodgers is setting the team up to fail with mind boggling tactics.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Apart from Origi none of our loaners are possible top liners they have a few add to that Costa and Fabregas joining this season its actually embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Aussie Guus is great. If Rodgers fails, we need a great, experienced manager to build a foundation. He would also attract better players.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That is not the point. We have bought many young player and have gone out on loan.

Chelsea are killing it financially by buying young players and if they do not show that they will make the grade at Chelsea then get moved on for a profit. FFP in it's finest form.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thats whats its all about making dough spending it and making more we should be doing the same.
The likes of Lovren and Lallana will never turn a profit or even justify their price tag.

    ReplyDelete
  26. But I doubt Lallana & Lovren were bough for the purpose of reselling especially not at those prices.

Luis Alberto, Aspas, Ilori, Assaidi etc who all came at low prices if sold we will either make our money back or turn a profit.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thats doubtful any of those will turn a profit and collectively definitely not if Chelsea were to sell Fabregas or Costa in January they would likely make money.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Not a whole squad worth

    ReplyDelete
  29. Assaidi would have gone for one hell of a profit if he had accepted a permanent move to Stoke.

Asaps is scoring goals, that maintains his price and the more he scores then his price climbs. Dortmund were rumoured to be interested in Ilori this past summer and highly doubt we would have been interested in letting him go at a loss. Ilorii is very sought after, kills me why we have not made use of him this season.

Our transfer strategy is not as bad as some make it out to be but decisions like Lovren clearly will come back to bite us.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Not sure where Assaidis contract is at now seems him and Borini wont go and are costing us handsome profits and then there's Markovic too Loges we would lose big on him right now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe Lovren needs a CB partner other than Skrtel. The only CB Skrtel has ever been comfortable with was Agger. You would think with him being so experienced that Skrtel would be able to slot in next to any player and make an example of himself. Skrtel could not even take Coates under his wing. Skrtel needs to go. We need proactive defenders, Skrtel is reactive. Johnson another player who Rodgers seems to be fixated with but causes more harm than good.

Rodgers can't see the wood for the trees at the moment.

Markovic IMO should be given a chance centrally. His link up play, pace and passing is very good and will only get better only if he is given a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe our scouting was very lazy this summer. We did not bother to go in depth and search the channels for the best of the best. We needed a defender but we wanted the easiest way out. Instead os searching Europe, we saw Lovren who was the safest bet. Instead of pursuing an unknwon Europian winger, we settled for the easiest and simplest option in Lallana. There were no relatively known strikers so Balo was agains the safest option. Origi did well in the world cup so no scouting required. Only ones we might have scouted were Can and Markovic who are not even playing and Manquillo and Moreno but only after the safe options of Ben Davies and Bertrand failed.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Last year Skrtel peaked in desperation of keeping his highly esteemed job at Liverpool but that was the final straw. Remember that before he peaked last season, he was in horrible form and that was the reason we got Sakho and Illori. Rodgers made a mistake because he did not see the long term with Skrtel who has not less to offer than Agger if he had stayed.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Our defence conceded 50 goals last season in the 36 EPL matches Skrtel featured in. He was our most regular CB. Elephant in the room.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The only thing Skrtel had going for him last season was his goal scoring record but now even that has gone as shown by the Newcastle game where he missed a very presentable header.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What we cant ignore is thie fact that last year we played hero football - attacking and brave and this year we play like cowards with one up front and mega borring - SAM ALLARDYCE IS RIGHT ABOUT B R THIS SEASON - TOTALLY INFLEXIBLE and at £50 a game ?????????????

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pretty much sums it up i am very disappointed in the signing of Markovic 20 mill on one for the future geez.
I really don't know what they seen in him either and the fact they never got a tried and true defensive mid was a worry.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The rumors are fun and all but I seriously hope we won't sign any more players until Rodgers is sacked. I honest to God hope FSG are already doing their homework on a Van Gaal-esque replacement for January. A manager who knows football but also players. One can only hope we can recoup some of the money wasted in the past three years. Although it will be hard because I doubt anyone would pay near what we did for guys like Sakho and Balotelli.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Who would you bring in? Hiddink?

    ReplyDelete
  40. But if that didn't work in ten games what would be the strategy then?

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's players who's statistical output is better than he is recognised for, or a player priced lower than their talents would usually see them. Coutinho and Sturridge are the only players that can be slightly seen as moneybags signings. Perhaps Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jumping in and signing players they don't need and later don't play to stop others buying them also.

    ReplyDelete
  43. BR is not here for LFC he's here for himself.lose the less attractive missus for new blonde teeth whitened hit the sun bed and lose that weight. His interviews last longer and longer and the more he talks the more ridiculous he sounds'dangerous possession' for instance. I'd rather have a giant head as manager than a lip smacking shiny loser who just won't shut up

    ReplyDelete
  44. We're those players not bought for thirty million plus? It's not like those players were not Already good before coming to the prem.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes and Lallana Markovic and Lovren were around 65 million combined which would you prefer or is that just a no brainer.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Some of those players you mention really suggest to me that Rodgers does pr did not have final say regarding players. The way he barely played those players and sent them out so fast suggests they were not his buys. Sakho too. His treatment of certain players makes me think there is a power struggle behind the scenes regardless of what is said to the press.

if we get this team next season we should be alright
    sell balotelli,lucas,borini,allen,sakho,mignolet,johnson,gerrard,toure,

we can win the league with this team

    ReplyDelete
  48. Same for both teams therefore no excuses. However, did anybody notice the extremely slow pace of the pitch?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Some of the mistakes are amateurish. Individual mistakes that can't be blamed on the staff. Don't get me wrong they do deserve stick but perhaps Lovren moving for eight million last summer was because he wasn't worth more. I hope I am wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  50. We all know how it works i could tell you all about it being that baseball is nothing like football statistically modified formulas can be used.
Their actual transaction records suggest their approach is not at all a moneyball approach and never has been.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Perhaps when champions league finalist and look liga winners catering for him there were few other clubs who could have attracted him. Transfers are not as easy as we would like.

    ReplyDelete
  52. if LFC are knocked out of Europe this month then its TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO STEVIE G --brilliant brilliant player BUT not worth another contract - best for him and the club to sat farewel amicably - AGREE ??

More fans agree with me than you think Jamie

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think you should also discuss price of ticketing in your great column too - this is an issue very close to all our hearts -PLEASE DONT IGNORE IT

    ReplyDelete
  54. There is a lad on another sute called Serbianred or something like that. He said that in Serbia Tadic is seen as a much better player than Markovic. Perhaps our scouts should have been doing a bit more work. Soto put last season's Dutch league top scorer and top assist maker together. Simple formula and one that those professing moneyball should have done. Balo's goal scoring stats from open play and assists record are poor. That is why I don't think moneyball is practiced anymore at the club.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lovren was a Rodgers preference I think.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Not sure it ever really was there are some examples granted but there seems to be a lot of flies in the ointment along the way.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Origi daid that when he spoke to the club they showed him footage from when he was a kid. I think more went in to his scouting than others to be fair.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Pellegrini says he would sign him as for a new manager go Futurama way and have a row of shiny heads from the past. FSG are clueless not to employ an experienced guy in the first place

    ReplyDelete
  59. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:17 am, November 02, 2014

    total: 140m

    balotelli 8m borini 5m lucas 4m sakho 8m mignolet 5m allen 7m enrique 2m

fsg have to put the funds in otherwise there is only one way we will go down

    ReplyDelete
  60. Klopp would be my preference despite how bad they are doing right now. I think there are similarities in the way he and Rodgers work so the transition would be easier and he could build on what's good.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:19 am, November 02, 2014

    no more british coaches

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think some have been in that vein but like you say it is not the same as baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anger was on the decline but I would prefer him to Lovren now. I was just saying that I can't see those players you mentioned going for much of a profit. They were great ayers and still are. It's not like Mourinho unearthed some gems he just paid big bucks wages and got his men.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Why would Griezmann choose us over Atleti?

    ReplyDelete
  70. One thing I would like to point out is that buying from the Premier League itself is a poisoned chalice. Only two out of our billion PL buys have turned out to be successful ( Sturridge and Hendo). Sturridge was also less of a risk because of the measly 12 mil paid for him. Kenny made the same mistake and now so did BR. No other team buys players from neighbouring clubs like we do. Man Utd did this as well and hence they struggled. The hype that come with PL players is too much and we always buy into it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Maybe but again he is not even playing so there is no point in debating. The point I think is that BR panicked after selling Suarez and went for the easiest buys. He thought of the team with the philosophy like him and Southampton came to mind and hence he bought their most valuable players.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yes. Even Hendo took more than a season to find his feet.

Lallana is excellent, though. Overpriced, yes. Lovren same story.

    ReplyDelete
  73. To me Sturridge starts ahead of Martinez, and if it's a dream team, there are better wingers than Sterling.

    ReplyDelete
  74. What reputation??? He was c..p at Dinamo Zagreb and Lyon was happy to offload him. Maybe he was "good" at Southampton, but that not justifies $20m price.

    ReplyDelete
  75. If you read between the lines - If our season is over before Christmas and no CL next year he might very well want out
anyway . Finish his career with a club that wins something !

    ReplyDelete
  76. Not really .... just the V slow pace of our players !

    ReplyDelete
  77. I would love Klopp.

In regards to Dortmund's performance this season their squad has been decimated with injuries as well as losing 2 of their best players to Bayern.

    Lewandowski to Bayern
    Mario Gotze to Bayern
    Ilkay Gundogan - Injured
    Neven Subotic - Injured
    Mats Hummels - Injured
    Jakub Błaszczykowski - Injured

Nuri Sahin - Injured for most of this season
Marcos Reus - Injured for most of this season

    ReplyDelete
  78. Certainly not 20 million, no. But he just seemed to have a good reputation when he came in. Fans supported the move.

    ReplyDelete
  79. For me the most important question is

Could another manager get more out of our current squad then BR?

    I would have to yes.

We have a very good squad with some young fantastic talent. I do not believe for 1 second that a squad consisting off the likes of

Balo, Gerrard, Moreno, Strurridge, Lallana, Markovic, Sterling, Lovren, Can, Suso, Coutinho, Henderson, Allen, Manquillo, Sakho, Skrtel, Flanagan, Rossiter, Mignolet, Toure, Enrique, Lucas, Borini should be playing as bad as they are and be in the position they are in.

If you put a manager like Wenger, Mourinho, Van Gaal, Hiddick, Klopp, Guardiola, Simeone, Conte, Ancelotti, Low, De Boer etc with squad we have do you believe we would be playing as poorly as we have been?

    ReplyDelete
  80. The answer at the moment has to be YES . After all this time and money spent on all these players he has failed to sort out our defence . We seem to be going backwards ....... He says he is committed to fast attacking football but after last season that has fizzled out . Refuses , presumably through arrogance , to play with two up front and get best out of HIS signing Balotelli . Refuses to get specialist expert coach in to solve defensive problems . Incapable of improving Mignolets performance or getting suitable replacement .
Poor team selections ....... hopefully he will stop Charlotte from picking the team in future ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  81. If BR plays with one striker against Real Madrid, he should be put under little bit of pressure from fans and owners. Although I doubt FSG knows anything about tactics.

    ReplyDelete
  82. They won't need to. I'm sure they know when we're playing bad, and we always play bad with one striker anyway

    ReplyDelete
  83. Mate. Mignolet actually did well yesterday. No GK is going to have an easy time behind our totally inept defence.

I think Mignolet pictures what happens ahead of him as the same experiencing of spending 90 minutes at a circus.

    ReplyDelete
  84. To be fair FSG do not need to know anything about tactics.

As owners go I can not fault them. They have backed their manager to the hilt in both finances and how he wants to run the club.

As far as I know they have not interfered with BR, they are expanding Anfield, they are increasing our commercial revenue each year, they are giving funds what more do you want.

As far as FSG go, I would imagine all they want is for the team to be successful, how the team gets there is down to BR.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The ting is Logan.. on paper we have a very good defence, so why are they playing so bad?

For me it is down to BR, not the players.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Skrtel and Lovren should not feature as our CB pair again just like Balotelli should not be played as a lone striker.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Sounds a bit like us.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I think most the players we got we were going to get anyway. I think we missed out on a couple of our proffered targets and the only real panic was Balo. I don't think we would be awesome or anything but if we could have gotten the Sanchez thing done we would be a different prospect right now.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Sad to say this but..
Last year I was embarrassed to wish for a draw between manu and City, or chelski. And deep down even manu to win. This season I am back to my normal self just wanting scumbags to lose. Hope that will be changed next Sunday with a a piece of brilliance from Brendan, but...

    ReplyDelete
  90. We clearly are not going to win the league this season and our chances of finishing top 4 are quickly drifting away.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'll agree if we are 12 points behind in January.
I'll agree when manu and Arsenal are 6 points off.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Sanchez would have changed things a lot mate. Without him, Arsenal are just as inept as us as shown by the table. His work ethic combined with Sterling's pace, Sturridge's movement and Coutinho's guile would rip teams to shreds. We are missing that one guy to spur the team on ( like Suarez) and that was Sanchez.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I know. The dynamic has changed so much. Last year we never wanted City to win because we were on their level but now we are relying on them because we are inept.

    ReplyDelete
  94. It's been a while since I felt this frustrated being a Liverpool fan...

    ReplyDelete
  95. We were never going to win the league this season

    ReplyDelete
  96. Omre will know what i am talking about ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Sorry bro I must have missed the conversation

    ReplyDelete
  98. 2000 posts and I am still omre...

    ReplyDelete
  99. Yeah I don't get that to be honest. We really should have used our bargaining too (Suarez) more to our advantage and just paid Sanchez what he wanted. Ah well.

    ReplyDelete
  100. you'll always be omre, orme.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Now you've changed it my reply sounds stupid...

    ReplyDelete
  102. Stats don't take into acoount he plays for the Fulham of Bundesliga.. Just look at our own stats last year... but we still got ourselves upto 2nd, and Mingolethad a massive part to play in that... again against Newcastle... he saved us again... but, lets just use pointless and not so illuminating stats that don't tell the whole picture.
Martin Skrtel broke the goal scoring record for a denfender last year.. but that doesn't tell the whole story either.

    ReplyDelete
  103. FSG have money but not the kind of money we need to win PL. FSG wealth is dwarfed by owners of City and Chelsea. I'm certain FSG are just looking to turn us over to someone else for a profit once the new seats go in.

  104. Hence why Markovic, Lambert, Lallana sit on the bench, I think so too.

  105. We need a keeper who can catch the ball, it stops the set pieces that are currently killing us dead in their tracks. Punching the ball usually recycles the ball back to the opposition and generally raises the tension and causes panic in the defence when the ball is not getting cleared and the defence is not pushing out. Reina looked terrible at crosses too, glad he went, also was a bit cheeky going public saying he was off if Barcelona came in for him while still collecting massive wages from us.
