Markovic-killer? LFC to make official £10m offer for 'exceptional' attacker who's like Sterling

With Liverpool's attacking players abjectly failing to pick up the Luis Suarez slack this season, Brendan Rodgers is reportedly set to make a rather improbable bid for 'exceptional' Norwich City winger Nathan Redmond.

According to reports on Sunday:

* Liverpool plan to make a £10m January offer for Redmond.

* LFC scouts are currently assessing Redmond's suitability for a move to Anfield.

* Rodgers and his fabled transfer committee 'believe' that Redmond, 20, is capable of making a similar impact to Raheem Sterling.

This has to be one of the most improbable transfer rumours in a while. £10m for a 20-year old currently plying his trade in the Championship? If Redmond had prodigious creative stats then I could understand it, but there's nothing remarkable about his goals/assists record:

* 2012-13: 2 goals/7 assists in 42 apps.
* 2013-14: 1 goal/6 assists in 39 apps.
* 2014-15: 1 goal/3 assists in 16 apps (so far)
* TOTALS: 4 goals/16 assists in 97 apps
* Goal every 24 apps.
* Goal/assist every 4.8 apps.

Is this worth £10m? Not for me. Redmond is arguably not an upgrade on any of the players already at Anfield, and I don't see the logic in spending £10m on yet another British young player when the Reds already have Ibe, Teixeira, and Suso on the books.

In May, Redmond scored a hat-trick for the England U21 team, but after the game, manager Gareth Southgate admitted that consistently scoring goals remains a problem for the 'devastating' youngster. He told reporters:

"The one area of his game he [Redmond] is looking to add is goals, and I think we are able to give him the freedom to play in more advanced areas. Tonight, his finishing matched the rest of his game".

In my view, FSG should institute an immediate moratorium on buying overpriced British players. Liverpool's squad is stacked with Brits right now, and the lamentable form of Gerrard, Johnson, Henderson et al is one of the main reasons the club is currently sinking without a trace.

If Rodgers goes ahead with this deal, it will be the latest in a long-line of pointless transfers. It'll also represent a vote of no-confidence in £20m signing Lazar Markovic. After all, if the club has faith in him, why sign another winger?

  1. ive made up my mind. until BR goes i refuse to support him and the rubbish players he utilises. Lovren and Skrtel will never work in a million years. Lovren the worst player in the PL. if Lovren and Skrtel stay in centre back and steven gerrard stays in midfield its likely Liverpool can be relegated. if we cant beat Villa, Newcastle, Hull, Crystal palace, qpr, middlesborough, ludogorets, west ham, who can we beat? weve played well once this year and that was against Spurs. bar that weve been poor EVERY game and BR is to blame. poor transfers and rubbish tactics.

  3. I doubt there is substance to this rumour. For argument's sake, I think it would be a poor piece of business. I think Ibe is a better prospect.

  4. A really good team starts with a great goalkeeper,and it ends with a consistent goalscorer.In the modern football,you have to add a reliable defence and a powerful DM.Unluckily,we are lacking of reliable players in these areas.Most of all, we need our players to be managed by an inspirational manager, who can motivate the people around him.

  5. Should have kept more of our youth such as Ibe as depth, and used the Suarez money to go all out on quality...

  6. Considering we jettisoned 3 scouts based in England recently, I'm hoping this transfer rumour follows them out the door. What sense does it make to abandon Markovic, a 20m player, for Redmond, without proving Markovic isn't going to cut it first? It's not like Redmond is guaranteed to make it, and the Transfer Committee has demonstrated a glass eye for signing talented players. What is it, 2 out of 25 successes thus far?

  7. We need a DM, two strikers...so let's buy another young winger. F***ing terrible logic if true.

  8. Well you don't have a choice do you? Either stick by him or don't watch. He doesnt care if you don't keep the faith, I don't care and no one else really cares, but for the moment, until FSG decide that we need someone else, you can either get behind him or continue supporting when the weather is fair. It's all good and well to support the club when we've got almost every player in freakishly good form and the best striker in the world up front (partnered with the second best in england), but when the weather turns, we need to be mature about it, stick by the club, stick by the manager and stick by the players. I apologise if I'm getting slightly partisan in my views, but I honestly can't fathom how a club's supporters can turn on someone who did so well last season, got the best out of players who were down and out, represented our club with professionalism and guile, and clearly loves our club. Support how you will, but please understand if I completely disagree. Peace, YNWA

  9. Ridiculous idea. Tons of kids in the organization and we keep looking for lightning in a bottle instead of acquiring proven talent. WTF!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Nick,

    You, me and 80% of use know exactly the same thing. I just can't believe the transfers have been so ineffectual and our marquee signings, presumably Lallana and Balotelli are anything but. One goal between them and Marko is scared shitless to shoot, pass and make runs which were supposed to be his game. Scouting and front office should be ashamed of themselves.

  11. Jamie Carragher can talk a good game, but so cab I.. Big Big mistake waiting to happen, i FSG are dumb enough to ggho down this route, I might aswell start watching figure skating, It'll be less of a joke.

  12. Free flowing football is only a dream these days, but I agree fully with your point.... Fact is Barca have been together as a group since childhood for the most part, now most of LFC's players haen't been about 5 minutes, so expecting any understanding to that degree would be extremely hopeful.

  13. One of the few things Kenny got right was not playing Sterling. He is an impact substitute at best out wide. He needs to be played as a striker because he lacks technique, creativity and match intelligence to play anywhere else. He is at his best when he is giving the ball to Alpha players while he buzzes around them. Alas if he is wrongly considered to be our best player then everyone is naturally looking to play through him and that is not his game. Sterlings game is reminiscent of Micheal owen. Owen did a job as a number 10 for England alongside Shearer and could even play out wide if necessary but his strength was his movement and pace in behind because creatively he lacked flair and mastery of the football as does Sterling. Sterling's hype is unbelievably contrived! He is no Barnes, Litmanen, Ronaldo or Bale. The best players in the world strike the ball like a boss be it passing, shooting or delivering free kicks. Sterlings game lacks this mastery and so renders him null and void as soon as he is denied any kind of space. Redmond is exactly the same.

    on another note I'm hoping that BR realises he has a 24 man 1st team squad and not a 1st eleven and a second 11. How can you promote competition in these conditions? I remember a few years back David Moyes and Everton were almost relegated the season after they finished 4th but Moyes changed his ways and philosophy enough for the team to develop and progress the following season. BR has the capability to do exactly the same with this Liverpool side next season, however he lacks the capacity to evolve with the times. His downfall will eventually be his own pig headedness.

    To balance things up it was nice to see BR being honest in his press conference and accepting that we are in a mess. It is very difficult to treat BR like an adult and give him the support he needs if he chooses to treat the fans like children and resort to smoke and mirrors during each press conference to cover his arse. His latest press conference was refreshing, he left his ego at the door and displayed himself as a broken man. I'm hoping he has hit rock bottom now and that it promotes a change in his dynamics and attitude towards running the mighty LFC....... Only time will tell.

    I think two strikers and a keeper are the priority
    maybe bony and berahino are players we might attract , while begovic in goal

    ...........................................Berahinho.........Bony
    ........................................................Sterling
    .................................Lallana/can.......................Henderson
    .......................................................Gerrard

    while in the summer we can strengthen the back 4 , schniederlin,clyne are pivotal players we should not miss out on

  15. That's the answer another 'young' star what about our poor defence keeper and midfield- where's the point- don't we already have a youth team. Better still buy him and loan him out

    ReplyDelete
  16. I do not want players from the PL. They are so inflated. We will probably end up spending 50 mil on these two. Also, NO MORE SOUTHAMPTON PLAYERS..

    ReplyDelete
  17. since carra left, i haven't seen any of our CB's geling...

  18. Beyond a joke. Quantity over quality will never get you anywhere. If Rodgers wants to start getting cocky and have digs at Spurs about failing to challenge for the title after the money they spent, and proclaim no sympathy for Saints because it was their decision to sell their galacticos, then he needs to back himself up. The guy has 10 omelettes-worth of egg on his face right now. People bang on about us not affording big wages, but surely that Suarez money could have been spent on 2 world class players with big wages...

  19. Can anyone explain to my how Lovren could have been brilliant at Lyon, brilliant at Southampton and now all of a sudden be a horrible player in a way that he's to blame for that?

    ReplyDelete
  20. There is no way any manager can justify spending 20 million on a player and then another 10 million on another one to replace him six months later without him having played a substantial amount of minutes. The sale of Keane was a total and utter joke after half a season but this would be nothing less than an outrage. Personally I think FSG will either force Brendan to see out the season and bring success with the players he has or sack him just before January and allow a new manager to clear out a couple, bring in one or two and work with what is there. That's what happened when Kenny took over mid-season and that's what could happen again.

  21. In Lyon Toulalan played as a CB couple of times with Lovren being fit. You know who is Toulalan? That much regarding his briliance...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes Toulalan is one of the best DM's in the world. What's your point?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nedeed in that position, but Lovren was so poor that he couldn't be trusted...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Actually, Lovren was horrendous at Lyon supposedly. He was voted their worst ever signing or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. With Man City I think if they were to get him he could succeed there but not at Barca where his fear to sub misfiring club legends would haunt him again. I have said it in the past that BR needs to stop this recycling of players ('turning' SG into a CDM). We are seeing clearly just how that is turning out.

  27. Agree Sterling is not the finished article that some claim but it is not his fault he has been over hyped and he still has time on his side. It is unfair to compare him with players that have a whole career to look back on. He is imo a great prospect

    ReplyDelete
  28. why on earth Gerrard? he is finished

    ReplyDelete
  29. On what planet is Nathan Redmond classed as exceptional?! I know it's not earth!
    He's nothing more than just another average British player.

  31. We aren't guaranteed 3rd placeat the mo but even if we did get 3rd I can't see us prioritising that competition but maybe could be used to get squad game time.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Check the news story about 'Arthur' the dog who befriended some Swedish extreme adventurists- let's sign him

    ReplyDelete
  33. Eum no. Lovren was actually playing at full back. Because he didn't speak French yet. After his first half season he moved to CB.

    ReplyDelete
  34. im sure our scouts are on fergies payroll!

    ReplyDelete
  35. its strange that net spend was never mentioned with kenny

    ReplyDelete
  36. so if we sold a player for 200m and rodgers bought 10 players for 200m and we got relegated thats okay because he had zero net spend

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm not comparing him to those players in their entirety, just in the way wonderful flair players strike a ball. It's something natural that Barkley, Beckham Van Persie EVEN Ryan Taylor have whereas Lennon, Pennant, Sterling, Markovic and Nathan Dyer have one string to their bow. I don't think this added dimension can be taught.

    ReplyDelete
  38. An 8% success rate. We are not City, Real or PSG with bottomless pockets coupled with immunity to Fair Play Rules. We need a better success rate with transfers. Fact.

    ReplyDelete
  39. One mascot is enough grrrrr!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Think we need an experienced winger like Pedro or Lavezzi. Someone who's been there and done it. But what do I know. Redmond is a good player, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  41. After improved contracts, most of them cannot perform passes and run anymore... They all get overrun by the more energetic opposition!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Maybe if we take more Southampton players they will win the league

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well said. The last thing we need is another untried or tested wide player from a bottom of the table club, mind you he is 5 foot 6 so smaller than Brendan which appears to be a pre requisite . Team full of midget low quality players no one else wants and 9 signings in the summer none of which have improved the first team. Shocking really!!
