'I'm impressed': Redknapp raves over £15m star LFC tried to sign in €40m double-deal

Over the summer, Liverpool were linked with a £40m double swoop for Southampton stars Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne. Lallana signed for LFC, but Clyne stayed at St. Marys, and according to former Reds midfielder Jamie Redknapp, the talented right-back is one of the Premier League's best performers this season.

In May, The Mirror claimed:

"Liverpool [are] keen on Nathaniel Clyne, who is valued by the Saints at £15 million.

"Rodgers believes Clyne would fit in well at Anfield because of his pace and attacking style".

In a recent column for Sky Sports, Redknapp enthused:

"I’ve been really impressed with him [Clyne] this season. He’s athletic, technically good and he’s benefitting from playing in a Southampton team which is riding the crest of a wave. Clyne is showing plenty of promise and he’ll learn an awful lot from Ronald Koeman".

When asked last month about Clyne's form, Koeman paid him the ultimate compliment, when he told reporters:

"Clyne is one of the best right full-backs that I've had in my teams during the last 15 years. That means a lot because I like to play with offensive right and left full-backs and he has those qualities, he's fast and gives good crosses".

The Premier League's big guns poached Southampton's supposed top-stars over the summer, but the hilarious irony is that the Saints are second in the table, whilst Liverpool and Manchester United are struggling to avoid mid-table obscurity.

Southampton's defence, in particular, is thriving without Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw, and Calum Chambers, and in comparison to Man United, Liverpool, and Arsenal, Ronald Koeman's team is on a totally different defensive level:

* Played: SFC 11 | LFC 11 | MUFC 11 | AFC 11
* Goals Conceded: SFC 5 | LFC 15 | MUFC 14 | AFC 13
* Ave Conceded per game: SFC 0.4 | LFC 1.3 | MUFC 1.2 | AFC 1.1
* Clean Sheets: SFC 7 | LFC 2 | MUFC 3 | AFC 3

5 goals conceded in 11 games? That stat makes a complete mockery of Liverpool's leaky defence, and Clyne - described this week as 'top class' by Adam Lallana - is clearly a major part of why Southampton are so defensively solid this season. Indeed, the youngster is currently the Premier League's top-tackler, with 55 successful tackles in 11 games.

As a comparison, Glen Johnson has managed a pitiful 9 successful tackles all season. Of course, Wanyama and Schneiderlin offer super protection in front of the back four, and that is another area in which LFC are seriously lacking this season.

Clearly, Liverpool bought the wrong Southampton defender over the summer. It'll come as no surprise to see Clyne linked with the Reds again at some point over the next year, but right now, there is absolutely no incentive for him to leave St. Mary's.

  1. I don't think he's any better than Manquillo who is infinitely cheaper than Clyne would be. Looking forward to seeing Flanno back in action too, poor guy's almost been forgotten about but as he's shown before, if anyone's got the heart to force their way back into the managers plans it's Flanno. Something we've had a distinct lack of this season

  2. More Southampton players... They should get a restraining order against us!

  3. you wouldnt have said that if we hadnt wasted our time on Adam Lallana, Lovren and Lambert for £50M and just bought Clyne for £15M. BR wasted his time buying players who were playing good at the time instead of actually scouting players who we needed like Mourinho did. Clyne was clearly a player we needed and being english he could become one of the best. BR out. hes bottled it wasting 220million and only being succesful because of Suarez. he plays attacking players like gerrard, hendo and allen in holding positions and balo up top on his own and borini on wing

  4. What does that have to do with anything? Honestly, I rated Manquillo over Clyne before we even loaned him in. Our overspending is irrelevant.

  7. May as well keep buying Southampton players and cry a bit more when they replace them with better and younger players half their price.

  8. I just watched Jari Litmanens chip vs Singapore. What a player it's a crime he never played more for us .....absolute criminal. Had he done we would have won the league.... true world class. Ironically the class of 2014 could also do with a world class player because we are no where near to having one.

  9. The Biggest problems we have in first 11:

    Is there is no protection Behind Our Defence: S Mignolet(26) is great shot stopper and nothing else and defence have no trust in him anymore.

    And there is no protection in front of back four: Amazing class great quality loyal S Gerrard(34) is 5 years past his best and does not have the energy, legs, mobility, pace or speed to play the DM in the Premiership.

    In Italy S Gerrard(34) could still shine but not in the most physical and quickest league in the world he struggles to dictate, dominate or effect games. His Hollywood passes are not being chased by L Suarez(27) and Sturridge(25). Now the likes of Balotelli(24), Coutinho(22), Lallana(26), Markovic(20) don't chase the Hollywood passes like Suarez(27) and Sturridge(25) did last season.

    So S Gerrard(34) should have been played from the bench the last two seasons, B Rodgers needs to spend £25M on these two players in January to sort out our defensive instability.

    1: GK: A Begovic(27) Of Stoke should be brought for £7-£11M
    2: DM: Y M'Villa(24) Of Rubin Kazan( On Loan at Inter Milan) should be brought for £10-£14M

    Those two players will stop side conceding goals for fun and make side harder to beat and break down at Anfield and Away from Home.

    Whilst B Rodgers needs to ship out these 6 dead wood average players in January:
    GK: B Jones(32) CB: K Toure(33) RB: G Johnson(29)

    DM: L Leiva(27) CM: J Allen(24) FD: F Borini(23)

    Whilst B Rodgers needs to bring in more class, creativity, goals, mobility, pace and speed to attack with these 4 top class experienced quality attacking players:

    1: CM: Y Cabaye(28) Of PSG for £15-£18M to compete with E Can(20) ,J Henderson(24) and S Gerrard(34) for next 3-4 years

    2: RWF/ LWF: Pedro(27) Of Barcelona Or T Walcott(25) Of Arsenal for £17-£27M to compete with R Sterling(19) for next 4 years

    3: LW/ RW: K Bellarabi(24) Of Bayer Leverkusen for £10-£14M to compete with L Markovic(20) for next 3-5 years

    4: FD: P Aubamayeng(25) Of Borussia Dortmund for £16-£18M to compete with Balotelli(24), Lambert(32) and Sturridge(25)

  11. Don't agree with any of that

  12. You do write some utter crap.
    I seem to remember something along the lines of 'Lallana(25) could be bought for £14-16m, and Lovren(24) for £10-£14m. We definitely won't pay more than that'.
    Those age brackets make it easy to remember. Litterally just picking figures out of the air.

  13. Bob your a comedian, if the manager wants to over spend on average players that may now get him the sack over the course of the season, he did so. But they were not worth what club spent on them:

    Lallana(26) is a £12-£16M player, Not £25M player
    J Allen(24) is a £7-£10M player, Never a £15M player
    Lovren(25) is a £10-£14M Player, Not a £20M player
    Borini(23) is a £7-£8M player, Not a £11M player
    Markovic(20) is a £10-£12M player, Not a £20M Player
    L Alberto(21) is a £3-£5M player, Not a £8M player
    M Sakho(24) is a £12-£15M player, Not a £18-£20M player

    You do the maths how much B Rodgers has wasted on over spending on average players?

    K Dalglish did the same during his last reign at club: Overspent on average players:

    C Adams(28) was and is a £3-£5M player, not an £8M player

    A Carroll(25) was and is a £10-£12M player, Not ever and he will never be a £35M Player

    S Downing(30) was and is a £5-£8M player: Not ever and he will never be a £20M Player

    J Henderson(24) is a £8-£12M player, Not ever and he will never ever be a £20M player

  14. Their ages are their ages, i have not changed them on the way down. At end of day, B Rodgers needs to put most of the old timers on the bench alongside K Toure(33) ( S Gerrard(34),G Johnson(30) and M Skrtel(29)) They should all start on the bench week in week out unless in carling cup or early rounds of FA Cup.
