Shock Result? 79% of fans want LFC to sign 'world class' €24m star to replace Gerrard

Liverpool are currently linked with a January move for PSG star Yohann Cabaye, and Reds legend Jan Molby insisted this week that Brendan Rodgers should 'seriously consider' signing the France international. What do fans think, though?

Cabaye - who cost PSG €24m - is struggling for game-time at PSG, and in a recent interview with tv3sport.dk, Molby suggested that Cabaye would be a perfect replacement for Steven Gerrard:

"If Yohan Cabaye really available, then Liverpool must seriously consider signing him. The club needs to think about a long lasting solution [to Gerrard]"

'World class' Cabaye has started only two PSG games since September, and in a recent interview with L'Equipe, he revealed his frustration with life at PSG:

"To be honest, I am unhappy. This [being on the bench] is new ground for me and the only thing for me to do is to show what I can do. I'm 28; I'm not just starting out. I will not change my style of play now"

Last week, I conducted a poll on the site asking if Liverpool should sign Cabaye to replace Gerrard:

* 9730 people (approx) participated in the polls (which is still ongoing)
* 79% of participants voted YES to signing Cabaye.

Unlike a couple of seasons ago, Liverpool fans seem increasingly open to the idea of Gerrard being replaced, and after 5 defeats in 7 games, it's clear that the captain's influence is rapidly waning.

If Liverpool really pushed, the deal could probably be sealed, but is Cabaye the answer? He's already admitted that he's unhappy, and things seem to be going from bad to worse for him at PSG. Laurent Blanc dumped him on the bench again for Sunday's game with Marseille, and with only 6 starts all season, he is clearly not in the manager's immediate plans.

Cabaye is 29 in a couple of months, though, and it seems to me like Liverpool may have missed the boat on this particular signing. How many great years will the club get out of him, and if the fee is over €20m (which it's probably likely to be) is it really worth it?

  1. Am glad that we are being linked with William Carvalho who is a type of DM we need to compete with Lucas/Gerrard. We have few players like Cabaye so a big no from my side.

  2. To old. Not a solid long term vestment. Just paper talk yet again

  3. No not for me Cabaye is good but i think we can do better.
I have the feeling Rodgers will be selling to buy for a while he has wasted a bundle.

  4. Another slight better than average player never been world class we can surely do better

  5. do we need big names? switching some formation is more than enough

  6. You wanna win the league one day?

  7. This 29 thing is stupid
real Madrid paid a world record fee for zidane at 29
it is about success , cabaye like fabregas can contribute straight away

  8. Dele Alli in midfield, has the legs and creativity.
    Alex Song in defense
    Ocha in goal
    Who in the attack?

  9. Johnson kept the score down in the first half with two great blocks on Hazard.

  10. For me the problem really is in playing SG in that DM role. Who ever said Stevie is a DM? He should play number 10 as an impact sub. Did chelsea turn lampard into a DM when his output in declined, NO. so why should Stevie's name be littered with this DM nonsense. If we get Cabaye, Stevie should still play as CAM- his original position. Its our vice-captain who should prove that he offers something going forward. He needs to decide where he wants to play, going forward or defending, not these anonymous performances this season. PLaying Stevie in DM is abuse

Compete with Gerrard you mean because Lucas is already competing with BR. Poor prick can't get a game.

  12. Mate, there is no point in debating. Rodgers does not look like changing any time soon. Despite our cries for the more in form players, nothing has been done.

    ReplyDelete
  13. No, he's not single-handed turning around the team performance. He's growing into the team and I thought his performance against Chelsea was very good, very promising. If he continues to improve I see no reason why he won't be a regular. Defensively speaking the entire team is struggling and again simply bringing in a new player isn't going to solve that. When is everyone going to start to understand that it's not the personnel, it's the entire team? If we brought in a tough tackling defensive mid not only would that stunt our attacking play but pretty soon he'd make a few mistakes and get caught out of position and we'd be rubbishing Rodgers for making yet another dud signing. There are very few players who could absolutely command that position and themselves drag the team out of their current slump.

  14. I've got at least 10-15 more of those up my sleeve

  15. Marco Verratti!!!!!!! that's a proper DM. Better than Stevie and Lucas. And why is club not linked with names like Ogbonna and Lorenzo Insigne????? Their ages are okay and they would immediately make an impact!
    disappointed in BR tbw

  16. a few weeks ago and i sensed gerrard is slowing down our overall play and few hollywood passes do not cut it no more!!! rodgers will not drop him so once again our best hope is if he gets injured for a few games and i stand by what i said he is a legend but his legs are no more

  17. anonymous performances HAHAHAHAHAHA!

  18. Of course but the problem is not so much with our squad but with how they are being utilized.

We can all see that the formation and tactics BR is using does not work.

Everybody can see it but BR.

  19. The stupid thing I still think Gerrard can do a great job for us if he is used correctly.

Fergie (god I really really reallyy hate saying this) did a great job with both Giggs and Scholes when both players approached the end of their careers

  21. Still believe we need a fresh start and that will come if we are knocked out of Europe - AND WE WILL BE AFTER NEXT GAME

  22. Thank God for people like you who know what they are talking about. How can anyone not know that bayern, madrid have proper cdms? beats me

  23. Against the idea of Raheem as a lone striker, if it cant work with experienced Mario, dont think Raheem can cause any team any harm as a lone striker

  24. Brendan needs a paradigm shift in mentality. For his standards he is fantastic- his standard is firmly at mid table teams IMO. Like Kenny he too has played his part, we need someone to take over.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Balo is great, only problem is he is mis-managed by our guy Rogers, who did the same with Sahin, is doing the same with Suso. Will only know their worth when they [mario, suso] have left us, like sahin

    ReplyDelete
  26. agree 100%. Its SG who was supposed to make tackles, intercetions and "control play" from the "deep", but he couldnt, he cant

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sorry , Agger was my favourite in that team but he had lost many of his abilities that made him a favourite among many. He recently got voted into the individual "flop team of the week" in his country. He is past it

    ReplyDelete
  28. I thought last season proved that we need a a proper CDM , if not two CDMs.

    ReplyDelete
  29. we shouldnt have bought anyone from Soto. Its their manager who was good, not the players. Unlike us last season, it was SAS and Sterling who were good not the manager. Having lost 7 players if not more, SOto are playing well why? Its the new manager who is good. I hope we dont go for him when Rogers is fired. We need a manager with some b*#^s to tell SG to play in the number 10 role, to produce or be subbed and sold. ONe who wont play SG out of position and have himblamed for our midfield and defensive woes

  30. Not meaning to interrupt this conversation (I agree with you and Jay Jay, by the way), but this article from May 2014 has some interesting stats where defensive midfielders are concerned:

    http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/05/08/stats-how-arsenals-28m-target-compares-to-matic-lucas-sandro/

Thought it might add to the convo about who is supposed to do what.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well Potch isn't doing too good at Spurs so was it the manager? Perhaps the core ofthe team is what was good but we didn't properly identify that core. Sneiderlin and Wanyama are peobably the best midfield pairing in the league and keep their backline well protected whilst adding to attack. Well Sneiderlin adds to attack more than Wanyama but he is a rock.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't know if he can't but he definitely didn't. He has only ever had one or two good games defensively in that position and that is a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  33. you are right as a impact player or playing against weaker opposition

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with you mate on Wanyama and SHcneiderlin. Thats wht Soto were willing to rip us off with Lallana, Lovren. But it still puts across my actual point that BR is whack in identifying transfer targets and musnt cry about "big teams" having bigger purses to buy "whoever they want". If only he could make propoer analyses like the one you made there about the WnyamapSchneiderlin pairing. I guess it goes again to the manager being poor and unable to establish a simlar pairing for his own team by buying the correct players for his set up/formation

    ReplyDelete
  35. And this is exactly the problem, why is a player like Cabaye, too old? he is in his prime, he is a great player and passer of the ball..if he is too old the surely Pirlo should have retired? Or Lampard? Or Henry..they all still play, and they all still play well!

What shock man? Gerrard lost it totally for three years now, since torres left like he left as well, barely doing anything unless scoring some pens. When was the last time he scored from open play, Im not sure but I think vs villa two or three years ago in that 1-3 defeat, that is hilarious. Cabaye is good enough for me, but the only problem with him, is that he looks a bit injury prone as I could follow him at newcastle, but either way, we should be going for him.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Players like Gerrard, Ronaldo, Messi, Suarez, Rooney, Vieira, Giggs, Zidane etc, are world class, unique, one of a kind and you cannot replace them. The only thing you can do is to change the way that your team are playing. There is only one Steven Gerrard and he needs 10 Cabayes to make a half Stevie G. When the music is over for Gerrard, we need another plan, not another Gerrard. Tell me who was the next Dalglish? No one! The next Barnes? No one again! The next Hansen? No one once more! This is the same mistake that Brendan Rodgers is doing right now. He is trying to play like if he had Luis Suarez. But Suarez is gone and we cannot replace him. The only thing that we can do is a big change of the way that we are playing... YNWA

do we have a goalkeeper coach? suppose not, just as we dont have a defensive coach,

  40. See it now 79% want Cabaye, he comes in doesn't perform to the level the 'experts' demand in first 10 weeks and the BR wasted more money brigade start again, and the 79% start craving the next remedy !

  41. i think Liverpool must get Cabaye. I don't see him as a replacement of SG. It's a fact that SG is in the end of his career and he is one of the top Football Legends at LFC but I woudn't mind watching SG and Cabaye playing at the same time. I don't see any of other current midfields be in their class. Coutinho and Hendo come close. SG can also be alternated and play half time at times. But please you guys at Liverpool-kop put a word with the club if you can of course for Luiz Adriano who currently plays for Shakhtar Donetsk. The man is a beast and he loves scoring goals. We must get him in January. Please watch the following video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sekz4H5W5e4
Hope we'll get him. We need prolific goalscorers and Cabaye is definitely one. I woudn't hesitate to compare him to Schurrle. I am not sure how Kris Commons is doing this season but he had a great one last season scoring 29 goals and reminds me a lot of Dalglish. He is 31 but I believe he can be a lot better than Lambert. Hope this helps.

  42. The question asked in the poll was: "Should Liverpool try and sign Yohann Cabaye?", and not "Should Liverpool sign Cabaye to replace Gerrard?

    ReplyDelete
  43. The Gerrard part is implied, based on the nature of the article (Molby suggests Cabaye should replace Gerrard)

    ReplyDelete
  44. We need steal, dynamism, creativity and energy in midfield. Box to box beasts to play the high tempo high pressing game. Cyanate would be the creativity...

    ReplyDelete
  45. We had mascherano (steel), alonso (creativity) and Gerrard (box to box goals, assists )...

    ReplyDelete
  46. I can't say I've seen very much of him, but I hear he is pretty slow. We could do with some legs in that position, I think.

    Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  47. 29 years old? replace Gerrard?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Pirlo and Lampard are the exceptions, not the rule. To spend in excess of 20M for a 29yr old who has possibly 5 more years doesn't make great business sense. You would be wanting to spend that kind of money on a play who is 24, 25 or 26, in other words a player coming into his prime, not a player at the tail end of his prime.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Why not put Borini up front as he is a striker and when Sturridge becomes fit, then Sturridge will be up front. I agree that we need to give Markovic more opportunities, however playing Sterling up front is not the answer, his best positions are either out wide or in the #10 position. As far as Skrtel goes, he isn't as bad on the ball as you may think. Sure he isn't as cultured as Daniel Agger, but then again not many CBs are, but he is still pretty handy, when he needs to he gets rid, but he has put in some quite handy balls too.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The difference is Cabaye may be good, Zidane was out of this world. Huge difference. You would pay 40M for a 29yr old Gerrard, but would you pay 40M for a 29yr old Michael Carrick? Sure Carrick is a good passer of the ball, but he isn't even in the same galaxy as Gerrard.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I did notice a few times in the game against Chelsea that Gerrard got in the way of a few of our players just as we were starting a counterattack on the edge of our box and ended up losing the ball because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You do realise that to get knocked out of Europe, we need to come last in our group, if we come 3rd, we are still in the Europa League.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This site has no impact on who we sign. This is a site set up for fans to have their say, JK isn't employed by LFC. And just because a player scores a lot of goals in the Ukrainian league and against substandard sides in the Champion's league, ie Bate, doesn't mean he will succeed in a top league. After all, if he was that good, why is it at the age of 27 has he only played for Internacional in Brazial and Shakhtar in Ukraine? Why hasn't he played for a club in Germany or Spain or Italy or even Portugal? I would prefer Seydou Doumbia, guy has pace, he has played for Young Boys in the Swiss league where he scored 50 in 66 games and plays for CSKA Moscow where he has scored 60 goals in 92 games, including big game goals against the likes of Man City and is in fact younger than Adriano.

just look at the his goal scoring form and you will have the answer. Its not merely scoring against City he has been good even in the Russian league.if we can get him for 15m then i think thats great business Porto will probably want twice as much that's rediculous amount

  57. You make a good point...but Chelsea's squad on the other hand...

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't think our midfield is that much of an issue.
We have problems up top, which means we're constantly back under pressure, and in Lovren we have the player who has committed the most defensive errors in the league.
Not to mention we're still playing Johnson who was so massively out of position for the 2nd goal against Chelsea he might as well have not been on the pitch on that point.
The problems at the back and the front are squeezing the middle which really isn't helping.
If we fix the front then we should be under less pressure defensively which would help things; if we fix the back we'd give ourselves a stronger base to build from and should aid us going forward.
If we fix both (and yes I know it's more difficult than it sounds), we should do a lot better.
