'He's like Busquets': BR fighting to sign record-breaking €40m Porto star. Replace Lucas?

Liverpool are reportedly going head-to-head with a number of different clubs for Porto starlet Rúben Neves, yet another untested young player.

According to The Mirror today:

"Liverpool have joined the chase for teenage midfielder Ruben Neves, [who] has been watched three times by the Reds this season"

Some info about Neves:

* 17 years old. Turns 18 in March.
* Plays as a defensive midfielder.
* 1 goal in 10 games for Porto.

* 46 apps for various Portugal youth teams.
* 3 apps for the Portugal U21 team (1 goal)
* 2014: Captained Portugal's U17s to the European Championship SF.
* Selected as one of the 10 'Talents of the tournament'.

* Youngest goalscorer in Porto's history. After scoring on his debut against Maritimo, Neves told reporters: "It was a dream debut, not only for my performance and goal but also for the win. I'm going to keep this forever and I hope it will be the beginning of a very successful career."

A profile on UEFA.com describes Neves' playing style as follows:

"Neves impresses with his passing precision, vision and astute positioning, showing great maturity for his age. Although commonly employed as a defensive midfielder, he shows no fear in getting forward, leading attacks and trying to score with his powerful right foot".

Barcelona attacker Cristian Tello is currently on-loan at Porto, and in a recent interview, he waxed lyrical about Neves' talent, and compared him to one of Barcelona's best players. He raved:

"Neves is fantastic with the ball, has great positioning on the field, and is aggressive, with a good job. With some small differences' he plays very much like Sergio Busquets"

Porto are seemingly aware of the growing interest in Neves, and the club has moved quickly to ensure that he won't leave on the cheap. This week, the Portuguese giants confirmed that Neves has signed a new deal:

"Rúben Neves [has] renewed his contracts with FC Porto this Friday. The Portuguese youngster will stay until June 2017, with a release fee of 40 million euros".

Liverpool have dozens of promising youngster at the academy, but very few quality defensive midfielders are on the verge of breaking through, so increasing the club's option in that area could be a good thing.

The Reds could also benefit from grooming a long-term successor for Lucas Leiva...

  2. €40 million euros, in their dreams. Anyway we don't need a defensive midfielder that will be ready for the first team in 4 or 5 years

  3. I know very little about Ruben Neves. What I do know is Premier League football is a tough place for kids to develop.Especially playing in the engine room as a defensive midfielder.
His age alone makes me think we should pass. How many kids play DM at top clubs?
Liverpool should be looking to sign established quality for that position. Not another kid who'll potentially be good enough in a few years.

  4. This mid may be great but we are bleeding right now and need. Proven help and need it NOW. Taking a flyer on yet another teenager when we have so many kids with skill and potential seems monumentally stupid and totally disconnected with the urgency of our situation.......

  5. Ronaldo 1 goal for every 3 shots.....
Balotelli 1 goal in 30 shots.
    One word Meh.....

  6. Kramer or Bender from Leverkusen. Perfect discipline when it comes to DM. They read the game perfectly and have the experience to know when to charge forward and join the attack

  7. Well said, we have enough young players within squad with potential but none of them are DM'S and we do not have anyone at club who can oust or ageing captain Marvel(34) Or L Leiva(27) as a DM even though both of them do not have the energy, legs, mobility, pace, speed or good hard tough tackling ball winners to play that role effectively.

B Rodgers needs to bring in : Either of these in January:

    1: Y M'Vila(24) Of Rubin Kazan(On loan at Inter Milan) for £10-£14M

    2: C Tiote(28) Of Newcastle for £7-£14M
    3: B Matuidi(27) Of PSG for £17-£23M
    4: L Bender(25) Of B Dortmund for £18-£23M

One of those class mobile defensive midfielders needs to be brought to club.

B Rodgers has wasted too much money on potential that has not been successes at club, he needs to start bringing in class experienced proven players. ( Players with potential who since Rodgers reign he brought to club who have not made the grade and some were shipped out on loan , some were shipped back to their respective clubs and others we kept that i doubt will ever make the grade playing for our club: Aspas(26), Alberto(21), Assaidi(25), Borini(23), Sahin(24), Moses(23).

B Rodgers has wasted millions on potential:

L Markovic(20) i am hoping and praying will come good, but when you pay £ 15M plus on player we need to see a high level of class, quality, consistant standard level of football from player.

A Lallana(26) is class quality player but he was not worth £25M and it is shocking to see

In summer Arsenal brought in A Sanchez(25) for £34M WC attacker without losing or having to sell a world class attacker

    Chelsea shipped out Luiz(27) ,Demba Ba(29), F Lampard(36) and replaced them and upgraded with Fabregas(27), D Costa(25) and L Remy(27)

Manchester United shipped out Hernandez(26), Nani(27), Bebe(24) and Wellbeck(23) and replaced and upgraded them with Falcao(28), Di Maria(26) and Herrera(25).

    Yet we have downgraded:

    We sold L Suarez(27) for £75M

    And brought in M Balotelli(24) for £16M and R Lambert(32) for £4M

When i had been saying all summer B Rodgers should have used £50M on:

These three attackers: 2 FDS and Goalscoring WC Winger

Mobile pacey quick goalscoring FD: One of these three strikers in Sturridge(25) Mould should have been brought to club for £15-£22M this summer , but now one of the top two should be brought to club in January. ( Would have suited side better than Balotelli(24) )

    1: P Aubamayeng(25) Of B Dortmund for £15-£22M
    2: L Adriano(27) Of Shakhtar Donesk for £14-£20M
3: L Remy(27) at QPR at time now of Chelsea for £10-£12M

FD: Big Mobile target man who can score 10-20 goals a season: One of these two players should have been brought to club instead of R Lambert(32)

    1: C Benteke(23) Of A Villa for £17-£23M
    2: W Bony(25) Of Swansea for £14-£18M

RWF/LWF A class creative Goalscoring pacey quick winger:

One of these two players should have been brought to club this summer instead of L Markovic(20)

    1: Pedro(27) Of Barcelona for £22-£26M
    2: M Reus(25) Of B Dortmund for £26-£30M

    In January:

B Rodgers should bring in these four players to save his season:
    2 Defensive Priorities:

    1: GK: Neto(25) Of Fiorentina

2: DM: Y M'Vila(24) Of Rubin Kazan to Protect back 4 and stop side conceding goals for fun away from home.

    2 Attacking Priorities:

    3: RWF/ LWF: Pedro(27) Of Barcelona for £22-£27M
    4: FD: L Adriano(27) Of S Donesk for £17-£23M
