Transfer Truth: BR confirms whether LFC are going to sign 'exceptional' £16m star. Good news?

Last week, Victor Valdes' agent dismissed reports that the £16m-rated goalkeeper had rejected a 4-day fitness trial with Liverpool, and claimed that the Reds have not yet made any official offer for the ex-Barcelona star. The Reds desperately need a commanding goalkeeper at the club, but it appears that Valdes is not not on the transfer agenda.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Sport recently, Gines Varvajal claimed that reports of a four day trial are wide of the mark. He explained:

"Liverpool have not offered us the chance to train with them for four days.

"And we have not rejected the offer, because it is false. That offer was never made to us by Brendan Rodgers nor by Liverpool at any moment."

In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS over the weekend, Rodgers was asked specifically if he 'planned to sign another another Spanish player in the coming months', to which the Reds' boss simply responded:

'No'.

Of course, Rodgers denial cannot be taken at face-value. There are many past instance of LFC's manager feeding the press misinformation, with the most recent example being his 'categorical' contention that Mario Balotelli 'will not be at Liverpool' (!)

In terms of shot-stopping, Mignolet had a decent game against QPR, but most goalkeepers are good shot-stoppers; that's the main aspect of their job. The Belgian was (arguably) partially culpable again for both QPR goals: suspect positioning for the first, and being beaten (again) at his near-post for the second.

Liverpool's entire defensive unit is an utter shambles right now, and Mignolet is a big part of disorganisation and lack of cohesiveness. The sooner he's replaced, the better.

  1. Today i found the new Sturridge
    SAIDO BERAHINO
ideally we would want a superstar like marinez or higuain

but if we are adamant on our philosophy this kid could be good
unlike balotelli he is fast and runs in behind defenders and scores goals

    ReplyDelete
  2. Valdes is not what we need he has an ACL the worst injury

petr chech is better a legend and chelsea will sell we aint their rivals anymore liek how they sold mata to man united

  3. team vs real madrid:

    ......................................lambert
    lallana............................coutinho.............henderson
    ............................gerrard...........allen
    moreno...............lovren.............skrtel............johnson
    ......................................mignolet

    bench: balotelli,markovic,can,lucas,toure,manquillo, jones

henderson and lallana will help defenders vs cr7 and james

while sterling will be kept fresh for qpr
and balotelli dropped for lambert atleast lambert has some link up play

    ReplyDelete
  4. sterling kept fresh for hull sorry typo

    ReplyDelete
  5. You're really clutchin at straws tryin to blame Mignolet for those two goals. Little chance for the first and the second isn't a case of being beaten at his near post. Its a corner, he's in a central position and Allen is covering the near post. Allen should hav cleared.

    ReplyDelete
  6. that's not a typo it's a mistake!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Why would we rest Sterling for the Madrid game? This is a massive game for us so we need to put our best team out which obviously includes Sterling. Resting him for the Hull game makes no sense at all. Have we given up on the Champions league like?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Of course we can silly Billy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Mourinho hates us but likes United. I can't see him selling Cech to us.

    ReplyDelete
  10. He'd cost so much considering his form and, more importantly, his passport. We could get an established international for the same money, I suspect.

    ReplyDelete
  11. We are what we are.23 players signed and doubts about every aspect of team. Shocking statement to make,it seems our scouting dept is based on clips on you tube, look at assaidi ,amazing skill ,same with markovic,,to sign so many unsuitable players by the same manager is truly amazing, I mean amazing that fsg have let him keep his job, history is repeating itself and this is only going to end one way, what are the owners expectations, br has been backed no doubt, but would you honestly trust Rogers with any more transfer dealings, let's be honest ,we need a keeper, not convinced with any cb .apart from sterling we have no width.and take Sturbridge out and we aren't even average.i can go on but one thing .look at Alonso at bayern . We're we ever in for him , if not then why, a fee of 8 million is a pittance compared to what we have wasted.would you rather have can for 5 years at 10 mil or Alonso for 2 years for 8 mil.i know what I would have bought,I think I must be watching different game sometimes,we have all been educated from our first game at lfc,we can all spot a player and we can all spot a wrongun.we assume managers must be right more out of hope than anything else ,but mark my words this is gonna end bad sooner or later

    ReplyDelete
  12. plagued with injuries? then what do u want Arsenal yo say

    ReplyDelete
  13. you must be nevergonnacrackthecode

    ReplyDelete
  14. They can say they have had no more injuries than us then p1ss off.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Aren't even average. People like to say the league table doesn't lie. We're better than average according to that.

    ReplyDelete
  16. West ham won and jumped 9 places. At this time of season table does lie.do you think Southampton and west ham will make champions league ? .we have lost one of the best players in world and spent more than 100 million making the bench slightly better .how many of our summer signing would get in to city,Chelsea, arsenal, and united, answer is none,

  17. Jaimie considering the slating Sakho got last year and even bizarrely this year are we going to see an article about how horrendously bad Lovren has been? Skrtel too is not having the best of times either but Sakho has never been as bad as Lovren has for Liverpool. Considering how much attention the defence got with Sakho in it I am regularly surprised not to see something on this issue after each terrible mistake ridden game.
    With love
    Big poppa jajaybean

    ReplyDelete
  18. As I said before, these players have been scouted and recommended, roger has final say .lets be honest about sakho and loveren the latter is slightly better on the ball .not defending either .i happen to think they both aren't good enough,

    ReplyDelete
  19. In my view, Sakho is far worse than Lovren. At least he looks assured on the ball. Lovren is a good defender, and he will prove that. Sakho isn't the answer.

Lovren can't do it all by himself. Full-backs are constantly changing, as is his defensive partner. There's no protection in front of the back four, and the goalkeeper is one of the least commanding in the Prem. Lovren will come good.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Fair comment.but don't you think that agger was made a bit of a scapegoat last year.thought all our problems were down to him.we were wrong.loveren can only improve based on his performances to date, but what about illori is that another 7 mil down pan,as for defensive changes ,again fair comment but you would think Rogers would know his best pairing ,assume would be loveren and another,it's not panning out like that though

    ReplyDelete
  21. cant win the league for sure because chelsea is looking unbeatable right now..damn that team

    ReplyDelete
  22. we need a good keeper at any cost..mignolet is so f**king nervous

    ReplyDelete
  23. But mignolet is a Brendan Rogers guy,or should I say obi wan keno I,so stubborn Brendan won't do it

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, Liverpools defence is a shambles, but on the whole the team is poor at this moment. And one other thing that I feel so strongly about is this manager. Today. I believe he wants to stay here ant LFC for 20 years, before plying his trade I Spain....well why don't you do us all a huge favour and leave now, I for one don't want you here you are both arrogant and a complete embarrassment to this wonderful club

    ReplyDelete
  25. You really think sacking Rodgers eight games into the season is the best thing for the club?
How exactly is he an embarrassment?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Pretty sure Arsenal would kill for a DM so Can is a yes. They would sign Markovic, but not at the price we did and Lallana would get straight into that team. Lovren probably would too, given Mertesacker's form and the loss of Vermaelen.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Okay, perfect opportunity for Liverpool to create a buffer over Man Utd. Their upcoming fixtures are Chelsea and City. We have Hull and Newcastle. We can take advantage of this, considering that we've already had a tougher start than they have.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i think the defensive strategy must be sorted out..if u notice.. all of our defensive players tend to converge in to one player or position rather than cover the free space or the running in striker ..need more awareness and defensive thinking
On the other aspect..when we get a quick ball on the counter lot of them stop and think fr 2-3 secs and always expect someone to carry on the counter attack and dont take the initiative themselves.. this we saw last week with coutinho taking on the burden himself and finishing rather than wait for some magic to happen..
last year the magic was suarez to create...this year ppl need to be more responsible

    ReplyDelete
  29. maybe we should look at 1 of those 3 instead: Guillermo Ochoa / Keylor Navas / Vincent Enyeama...

    ReplyDelete
  30. instead of replying to yourself, you could have used the edit "button"...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Good keepers do not get beaten (repeatedly) at their near post...Reina was the best keeper we had since Grobbellar...it's a shame his time ended the way it did because if he was in goal I don't think the defence would look as fragile as it currently does..,

We need a keeper who inspires confidence & commands his area AND is good with his distribution...not sure who is available...

    ReplyDelete
  32. manu had the easiest start of all top 10 teams, yet they didn't achieve to get some points and their defense is looking worse than ours. Facing Chelsea and Manc they will probably get 0 points of their next fixtures, can't wait for that ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. navas just signed for madrid and ochoa for malaga so we can strike those two off the list.

    ReplyDelete
  34. really nervous about the hull game. they are looking more menacing with each passing game.

    ReplyDelete
  35. an embarrassment to the club ???

    ReplyDelete
  36. what gave it away :) was it the phrasing?

    ReplyDelete
  37. the ability to contradict himself with every single post, his phrasing and of course him having the most deluded opinion ever ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think its very harsh to blame Mingolet for the goals at the weekend, when defenders allow balls to be headed back across goal there is always a massive gap and the second was a deflection off Gerrard that took it in to the net and the time to react was minimal.

He made some great saves during the game.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I bet you where singing his praises last season. Very fickle indeed.

Last season we played some of the best football I've seen from a Liverpool side since the 80's.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Imagine the stress levels having 8 of our players on Int duty

    ReplyDelete
  41. Llori is still very young for a CB, he will come back and replace Toure in the squad next year. Way to early to say its a waste or hes not going to make it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. lallana.....................coutinho............Sterling

  43. i'll bet he up votes his own comments :D

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm not convinced that's his real name either.

    ReplyDelete
  45. strange enough he has 5

    ReplyDelete
  46. Na he finally cracked the code of decent debate and realised he couldn't cut it ....

    ReplyDelete
  47. I can CATEGORICALLY tell you that Valdes is coming to LFC as BR has said he isn't

    ReplyDelete
  48. Definitely. But knowing Liverpool, something is bound to get screwed up.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Um.. It is alright to compare Mignolet with Reina but Reina got beaten at his near post far more than Mignolet has and that was one of his biggest criticisms. If you want to criticize, criticize for a valid comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  50. but would people just go on the internet and LIE about something like that ?

    ReplyDelete
  51. even though coutinho scored the last match, hes still not a stiker... play him as a OM

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sorry about predictive txt.these players don't have the same value to other managers,as for illori, signed 4 year deal ,comes back mid contract and is 4th choice at best.also got wisdom back maybe.but think he is being put in shop window now,no strategy to transfers, Jordan Ibe .wont get a shirt b4 markovic ,pity. Look pre season. ,all that seemed to be was one big sale of reserves and academy,if a youth player gets offered chance to go on tour I would be worried if I was them

    ReplyDelete
  53. With such an in depth Knowledge of good and bad players it's a wonder you're not a manager in The Prem, or at least a scout...
Alonso was courted by the CL champions, and Guardiola. No way was he going to turn that down even for LFC. You talk as if we just had to ask and he would come- he said himself he didn't want to spoil what happened before, plus heavens knows how many people I saw saying he was past it and too old for us. I guess they were 'experts' too...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Fiorentina keeper and Espanyol keeper

    ReplyDelete
  55. i've never heard of those two

    ReplyDelete
  56. Neto and Casilla both pretty good (not Casillas) Neto is Brazillian and Casilla Spanish I think Casilla available for 8m not sure how much for Neto and the latest is Petr Cech but that's a bit far fetched imo

    ReplyDelete
  57. Guys.. Ramos and Bale are not making the trip to Anfield. Ramos is their main aerial threat so at least the probability of conceding from set pieces and lower. Also, reports are that Benzema is also not 100%. We could have a real shot here.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm beginning to ponder whether Rodgers' style is too flawed. Why? Because it offers almost zero protection to our back four. I'm considering whether it even matters if we had Kompany and Hummels as our CB partnership or not, because our system is just not defence friendly. I don't know how teams can be expected to win the league when they ship in goals at a rate that will equal around 57 goals conceded a season. Maybe we need to tone it down and play a much more balanced style of play? I'm kind of missing the days when Rafa's team conceded 28 goals per season on average...

    ReplyDelete
  59. i am more worried about ronaldo though..that guy is on fire right now..i just hope jhonson or enrique doesnt start.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Without them bombing on we could have a chance- if we try and play behind Pepe we could get penalties he does tend to boot and grab people who try and go past him- a glimmer of hope

    ReplyDelete
  61. ronaldo has arguably the strongest neck muscles in recorded football history. he is just as good a threat in set pieces if not better than ramos.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yeah, that is why I said the probability of conceding from set pieces is lower. Having one less threat is obviously better for us.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Well, he is on beast mode so you cannot do anything about that. Just pray and hope.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Sterling on Pepe could work... He could waltz past him and could get a penalty. I honestly think that is our best chance of scoring in the game..

    ReplyDelete
  65. Speak for yourself mate, no favour to me if he left right now. He wasn't an embarrassment last season, nor is he this season. Hodgson ...... now that was an embarrassment !!

    ReplyDelete
  66. We need to play against Madrid like QPR played against us- disturb them.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ronaldo is always on fire. He's immune to form slumps.

    ReplyDelete
  68. no idea how BR will set up- our fastest strikers Borini and Sterling why not try it cos if we play like we did against QPR we got no chance anyway- Carra saying to drop Balo for this game

    ReplyDelete
  69. Former England international and famously outspoken football pundit Rodney Marsh is one of those ex-pros desperate to stay in the limelight by saying the most controversial – and usually stupid – thing possible.

And today the Sky Sports reject had his say on Steven Gerrard, calling up talkSPORT to offer his opinion on the Liverpool skipper, saying he believes he should have retired in the summer.

“Steven Gerrard looks finished,” he said. “I’m Gerrard’s greatest fan and he’s been a world class player for many years.

“At the start of the season I said Steven Gerrard would be playing one year too many, and it looks exactly like that now.”

    ReplyDelete
  70. Seems we are incapable of defending a lead ( when we manage to get one these days ) Do you think we will ever learn how to park the bus when necessary as all successful teams are able to do and will be essential in CL .......

    ReplyDelete
  71. Let's hope that Steve Peters has finally worked his magic on Ballo , he's stopped taking whatever it is he's been on, feels the force of Anfield and puts in the shift we all have been waiting for . Let's show em what the Reds are all about !

    ReplyDelete
  72. There's always an excuse when Mignolet plays well. These last couple of games he's been very good, doing what he's asked to do- something most of his teammates are incapable of right now.

    ReplyDelete
  73. do you really think moutinho likes united more than liverpool? if the price is right (like the 40m for mata) i think they would have no problem selling cech to an other BPL club

    ReplyDelete
  74. probably, even though Cech would be a dream signing. IMO hes still one of the Top 5 GK worldwide

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think BR puts too much emphasis on attack, we can clearly see this by how he used our full backs.

We will click though. I would give Can and extended run in the team.

    ReplyDelete
  76. He looked alright against QPR. He was not rash with the ball and always played it to an open man. He had a solid but unspectacular performance. I think he should be given a chance against Hull with Hendo and Allen in front of him.

    ReplyDelete
  77. With the way our defense is in shambles, I could play back there and have as much success.

    The problem isn't our goalkeeping.

The problem is our tactics and defensive performance.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I like Can remember him shouldering Balo off the ball v Milan pre season he will get better and better he hopefully will be our dependable DM in due time- now Mc Claren saying Jordan Ibe unplayable and Wisdom had good game against wot sits last night- lookin good for next season with them and Origi plus others can we fast forward please

    ReplyDelete
  79. Do you also do peoples fortunes?

    ReplyDelete
  80. This is the same Lovren who's passing was pass poor (mispelled I think) against QPR? Looking assured and acting assured are very different things and Lovren has been acting very different to nhe looks. He has made more mistakes in his short Anfiels Career than I can remember Sakho doing last year.

The point isn't a comparison anyway. I was asking if you would be pointing out Lovrens many mistakes and obvious flaws as you did for Sakho. Obviously not. The protection and fullback issues were the same last year yet there was no excuses made for Sakho. The goalkeeper was poor last year making lots of mistakes whilst Sakho was playing yet lack of clean sheets seemed to be his problem.

I understand this is just an opinion blog and you have no obligation to be consistent or unbiased I just wondered as it seemed to be a pet peeve last year whether how poor the new defender has been would end up in an article.

    ReplyDelete
  81. In what way is Lovren better on the ball. Not looking a bit gangly does not make him better. Accurate passing and passing comfortably under pressure are much better in Sakho's game. As for defending I doubt veru much that Sakho would have been bullied as much as Lovren was against QPR. Not to mention the catalogue of errors Lovren has made in his short time at the club.

    ReplyDelete
  82. And let's not forget there was someone standing specifically on the near post to block any ball coming in there.

I believe it was Joe Allen.

    ReplyDelete
  83. You should apply your last 2 sentences to yourself Geoff

    ReplyDelete
  84. I do think that, yes. He was clearly courting the United job until Chelsea came back in form him. Nakedly doing so, even.

Also, he never misses an opportunity to have a go at us. He once said we're the one club in England who he wouldn't manage and you've only to see his delight during the loss last season at Anfield and his recounting of that in the recent interview with Neville, to see his is not that fond of us.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thats the case now. In fact more than eight.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I've already pointed out Lovren's mistakes in previous articles. And, I've never once posted an article specifically focusing on Sakho's mistakes, i.e. an article where Sakho is the main subject. Like Lovren, I've mainly highlighted Sakho's mistakes in post-match articles. There's no inconsistency here; your perception of the situation is simply incorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Is that true? I seem to remember Sakho being the main focus of numerous articles, one in that there was two videos of what you interpreted to be mistakes. Is there an archive of articles? Perhaps it is more the level of evaluation and lack thereof regarding Lovren in match analysis.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I was wrong - there is one article focused on Sakho, but it's from the end of last season, after 9 months of watching him play for LFC:

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2014/08/sakho-to-blame-for-two-goals-manchester-united-usa-tour.html

It's perfectly fair to be critical of Sakho after almost one year at the club. Lovren is only in his first months at LFC, so he deserves time to settle-in and get up to speed.

I treated Sakho exactly the same as Lovren last season. In his first few months, I highlighted mistakes, but also gave him the benefit of the doubt, and brushed aside his shaky start (as evidenced by this article - final paragraph):

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2013/10/thiago-silva-claims-sakho-nn-better-than-19-year-old-marquinhos.html

In december last year, I highlighted another Sakho mistake, but continued to give him the benefit of the doubt, arguing that he'll 'get over it' and come good:

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2013/12/aldo-warns-liverpool-defensive-over-elaboration-sakho-spurs.html

If Lovren continues to make mistakes, then a few months from now, I may post an article focusing solely on that, but I don't do that in the first 6-8 months of a new LFC player's career.

    ReplyDelete
  89. We just need more balance. If, e.g. Arsenal had our back 4, there's no way they'd be conceding as many goals, because they aren't as gung-ho. I think we need to be more sensible now, and I would actually enjoy watching my team play like an organised, cohesive defensive unit like Chelsea, as long as it was mixed with attacking flair. They don't have to be as good as Chelsea defensively, but it would be nice to concede less than 40 goals.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Perhaps my memory is tainted by the latter judgements if Sakho as I seemed to remember you being critical of him earlier than it seems it was. I still feel that Sakho has never once performed as badly as Lovren seems to be playing, I think we all hope this changes.

    ReplyDelete
  91. If you remember alonso signed 2year extension with real in May just before Spain met up for pre World Cup .marca reported that real became aware that Toni Kronos was being made available as indicated to bayern he wouldn't accept new deal as they were offering same money..the deal to sign Toni Kroos as reported in El pass was completed during Germany's warm up games.real took option to sign kroos leaving alonso in limbo.was told would not be first choice.kroos signed 2 weeks after alonso signed contract.if you recall alonso giving interview on sky stating that ,loved club, many friends etc, also said never say never, only started with didn't want to spoil memory when it was clear liverpool weren't coming in..been fed this fsg policy of no signings past 30 as no sell on value, only asked why club didn't try at least.any clown can research a player if they can be bothered.fsg,s policy was all money all ,example ,aged 27 28 goals and 48 assists in 3 seasons.no major injuries ,no scandal, can play all across front, sounds good doesn't he. . Iago aspas.not being down on team just love them to much.that don't want stupid mistakes made time after time.and the people who said alonso was past it really can't have watched Madrid ,guess pep is a muppet to just look at what he was like against Roma tonight .not going to post any more ,just pay my money and accept all the bull were fed after games . How dare I be critical
